- We look at the devastating effects of climate change and global inequity in East Africa, and how many countries face drought and a looming famine, with guests in Mogadishu, Somalia, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. “The current unprecedented drought, that is a result of four consecutive failed rainy seasons, with the fifth and the sixth projected to also be below average, is causing a huge food insecurity,” says Adam Abdelmoula, the U.N.’s humanitarian coordinator for Somalia. “I think the agenda for Africa now is food sovereignty,” adds Million Belay, coordinator at the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa.

When you call famine "food insecurity" you do yourself a grave disservice. It strips it of its urgency and impact.

I was in Somalia three times in the 1990's and I participated in a massive lie while acting as logistics for MSF Spain. Nothing was done to improve the circumstances in Somalia even though the Potential for Agricultural along the Shabelle River is way way better than frozen Canadian gumbo on the farm in Canada. Read Wayne Longs article published in a major US magazine on how western NGO's used aid as a coercion as an example of how to influence policy.
NGOs are a way to make the administrators rich, said that only a third of the aid reaching the persons that only known hunger & starvation. The entire aid system is a crock of talking heads that never fail to draw their salary.
The west actually have been commiting genocide against somali people by destabilizing and therefore making the population vulnerable to starvation.

This is hard and heavy. My fear is that this is the face of the future as the consequences of climate change impact more and more countries. Somalia is just one of the more vulnerable ones. It will go down first but that doesn't mean that it will be the only one to have massive loss of life. So, yes actions need to be taken, but the underlying cause needs to be addressed too. This is the face of climate change/global warming. It isn't something we need to worry about in 2100 or even 2050. It is here NOW and like the grim r*aper it is, it will strike the weakest first. We need plans to save life as well immediately work to combat climate change or this pattern of famine will spread.

Basic question. Does high oil prices affect the poorest countries and EXACCERBATE other issues like this or destabilize countries like Sri Lanka...? I'm saying, without a drought, many countries might soon be on their knees thanks to idiotic ( deliberate ? ) mismanagement of countries like the USA and other wealthy nations...
This is just the beginning! The abrupt climate change we are in will last for a couple of decades or so until the climate achieves a new STATE. This will be a harsh and unforgiveable world where soaring temps destroy crops or reduce yields and makes life miserable for most. We've been in overshoot for a century, and like any other population of animals a catastrophic decrease in numbers can be expected. Currently we are literrally mining the soil with industrial agric- at least 40% of arable land is in a degraded state...much of our soils in developed countries are devoid of invertebrates- no earthworms. Also, climate change has doubled the rate of erosion and between 2050-2060 the US will become largely infertile as will much of Europe. The US will also see the depletion of the great Ogalalla Aquifer in the next 20 yrs. Nebraska and Kansas will no longer be growing corn as they do today. Other major aquifers are also in decline and the glaciers in the Andes may also be gone in 30 years. Because the US feeds about 900 million people outside it's borders with it's food exports 50% reductions will be catastrophic. Of course food production globally is also in decline in many other countries. Look at what happened in India this year. Modern agric also requires huge energy inputs and fuel depletion will also play a role in decreasingbavailability of fertilizer and liquid fuels for farm equipment. Because the world's fisheries may also collapse in the next 20 years it is not unreasonable to predict that all of these factors will contribute to a massive global famine of unprecedented size and duration. It is not unreasonable that at least a billion will die this century from starvation. But because of civil unrest, war, and political instability along with sea level rise and migration this number is likely to be closer to 2 billion conservatively. HELL AND HIGH WATER IS COMING.

@ Ben Sheeley. Ukraine is an important grain producer so they do not need any help with food. But also Ukraine is exporting grain and according to official reports cargo ships full of grain have left Ukrainian ports to relieve famine elsewhere in the world.
