  • Part 1 - WH Jeep Grand Cherokee HEMI vs CRD, 5.7L V8 petrol versus 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel OM642. This video was filmed at Menai New South Wales Australia and is published in two parts. Watch Part 2 here: • Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x... or you can click on it at the ending screen after watching this video.
    This trail is rated as medium difficulty.
    Here's a little bit about the vehicles, they're both equipped with factory QD2 system, which incorporates the centre diff lock, as well as the front and rear, made by Eaton specifically for Jeep Grand Cherokee WH models (or WK in the US). The HEMI sports a 545RFE transmission and 3.73 diff gears. The CRD is equipped with NAG1 transmission and 3.55 diff gears. Both running a 4" Superlift lift kit, somewhat modified.
    Both are running 33 inch tyres. The CRD is running 33x12.5R17 Atturo Trail Blade on +10 offset rims and the HEMI is running 285/70R17 Buckshot XMT Mudder with 1.5" spacers. So both end up with similar total offset.
    We hope that you enjoy watching this video because we also had a lot of fun that day, besides four-wheel driving. Feel free to leave a comment. Tell us what you think in the comments section below the video, we'd love to hear from you. We really appreciate you taking the time and commenting, and we respond to almost every comment made on our channel.

    Love watching these! I picked up an 04 WJ Limited with a dead Quadradrive T/case, I put a 242HD case in it and a Tru Trac in the front axle to replace the also dead Vari Lok. With 31's, a 2" lift and a good working rear Vari Lok it surprises quite a few people as to where it will go. 33's and more lift is in the future when I move to AZ..

    Clearly the HEMI driver is more experienced but besides that the HEMI seems to be smoother with the power.
    That said, a V8 5.7 LT HEMI just sounds so much better than the truck sounding Merc CRD.
    Full disclosure, I am a Jeep HEMI driver myself.

      The Hemi had Quadradrive II, it does all the hard work for you like locking diffs with automatic transmission. By far one of the most advanced AWD systems ever made. The v6 probably has quadra trac, which isnt as advanced but probably better at gas mpg. - probably not full time awd. (I have a hemi commander)

    Love the WK, no matter what engine it got. Probably the last platform that carries the original GC bloodline, and are actually capable of some real offroading. Here my WK2 can flex as hard as a Mercedes, lol. No matter what type of coils or lift kits I throw at it there is still an inch or two short on the ground clearing...

    Love this!! Insane cars, jeep has always managed to accomplish the impossible, comfortable, looks and amazing capability, I love how the Australian market thinks they're horrible because it keeps the prices down, so I can upgrade to a hemi V8, currently have a v6 petrol 2011, 210,000km on the clock zero problems and it goes off road quite severely

    I've got the 5.9 ZJ and it's a real stump puller, the lower it makes power the better. The diesel in the right hands is equally as capable.

    • @AussieFourWheelers
      @AussieFourWheelers  6 лет назад

      Diesels produce more power at a lower rpm range than the gasoline vehicles. In this particular case, the turbo lag wrecks it for the driver, but that can be sorted out with the GDE tune.

    • @lachlansheekey2839
      @lachlansheekey2839 7 лет назад +1

      Jason Patterson I'm considering a grand Cherokee and am leaning towards the hemi for cheaper purchase and servicing costs. And pros and cons you can give me comparing the hemi and crd? How does the hemi go running 33s? Runaway much on downhills?

    • @aussie_arboreals
      @aussie_arboreals 7 лет назад +7

      Lachlan Sheekey the HEMI sounds awesome! The biggest difference is cost of fuel, Hemi uses more than twice that of the CRD so CRD is definitely far more economical.

    • @everettdurst1
      @everettdurst1 7 лет назад +13

      I have the hemi (07 overland) and 33.3" tires. I didn't change the gear ratio, but I've considered it. The hemi has a ridiculous amount of power, particularly down low, and it absolutely leaps up obstacles. It never bogs or requires as much throttle as my 5.0L F150 does to rip around off road. On road, my acceleration went down, but is still very sporty. Bone stock, I feel like the hemi gets half way down the block faster than anything I've driven. I never had any doubt I could take the lane from anything next to me, if no other reason than they can't get enough traction to get across the intersection as fast as this all wheel drive does. With the bigger tires, it's still very quick, but not necessarily unbeatable. It's worth noting that at the same time I put the big tires on, I also added hundreds of pounds in bumper, winch, and armor. I am considering going to 4.10 from 3.73, but it would cost a couple grand and I really can't justify it. By the way, I have decades of 4 wheeling experience, and the QD2 system is unreal. It does full lock when it needs it, but it unlocks when you don't, so it drives much smoother than other lockers or limited slips I've had. It's awesome.

    • @lordazuzu
      @lordazuzu 6 лет назад +3

      Tires pressure seems higher on the CRD, but more importantly the driver is definitely less experienced that the HEMI one. Furthermore, the HEMI gearing looks "shorter" that the diesel, IMHO.

    • @AussieFourWheelers
      @AussieFourWheelers  7 лет назад

      Yeah, the 4" Superlift is an awesome lift, keeps the CV and steering rod angles at stock height and enables you to run 33" tyres. Just have to do the front and rear pinch welds, and cut a slot in the fuel tank protecting plate (and bend onto the tank) for the rear upper control arm to fit through and get more droop.

    • @AussieFourWheelers
      @AussieFourWheelers  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. Both are running 33s. CRD = 33x12.5R17 Atturo Trail Blade on +10 offset rims. HEMI = 285/70R17 Buckshot XMT Mudder with 1.5" spacers. So both similar total offset. Thanks again 👍

  • @greasemonkey9329
    @greasemonkey9329 7 лет назад

    The Hemi driver certainly has the experience. Having owned both, the Hemi certainly delivers the power down low a lot smoother, less wheel spin, better traction. The CRD tends to surge giving bursts of power in low range, hence wheel spin. Whilst the Crd performs well on road and towing with good fuel economy, it's not as good Offroad as its Hemi counterpart. However both get the job done. 😎

    • @AussieFourWheelers
      @AussieFourWheelers  7 лет назад

      Thanks for your feedback. I think once the CRD gets the tune done to eliminate the turbo lag, it'll be just as smooth as the HEMI, with great low down torque of a diesel and even better fuel economy.

    • @greasemonkey9329
      @greasemonkey9329 7 лет назад

      Cheers, AFW,
      Ive had the tune done on my CRD and it magnified the problem by quite a bit, because now you get a shitload more torque in one hit creating more wheel spin. However the improvement in power and economy was unbelievable, even with over size tyres. :-)

      I bought an '08 hemi commander three years ago and still love it a lot despite some minor "Jeep typical issues" and A LOT of gasoline... it now has 210 000 km on the clock and still runs like a champ. GCs and Commanders shared the same platform and mechanical components, so it's only a question of preference

  • @ADirtyScrub
    @ADirtyScrub 7 лет назад +2

    Never understood why they went away from solid front axles on the GC. While Quadra drive is great in theory things like this can ruin the system pretty easily. I'll stick with the Selec Trac and some mechanical lockers on my WJ. Just fewer things to go wrong. great video though, I always like learning new things about Jeeps.

    Great vid 👍. I see in the info you said the 5.7 has 3.75 crawl ratio and gearbox which was the same as the Wrangler command Trac. I can see the 5.7 took everything in its stride and the 3.0 did have a little trouble on some obstacles. Did the gearing make the difference? Also does the 3.75 crawl come standard or was it custom?

    • @AussieFourWheelers
      @AussieFourWheelers  3 года назад +2

      Thanks bud 👍 I think you understood that wrong. I meant the diff ratio in the HEMI is 3.7 as standard and CRD is 3.5. The CRD didn't perform as smoothly due to the locking differentials issue. Front diff only locked after fixing the ABS sensor wire on the trail. The rear differential didn't work at all because the plug was unplugged, only noticed it back at home.

    • @vanderz1012
      @vanderz1012 3 года назад

      @@AussieFourWheelers oh OK thanks for the clarity on that and on why the CRD wasn't performing as well as the hemi. • @AussieFourWheelers
      @AussieFourWheelers  4 года назад

      I prefer the HEMI as it's easier to control. The CRD's turbo lag is annoying and just when it kicks in, it's too fast, hard to control on technical stuff. The GDE tune fixes that though, but pricey, so will have to wait.

      Both front and rear were locked on that obstacle. You can see the CRD at the same spot @ 13:34 struggle a bit with only the front locker. The rear wasn't locking because the wire to the diff solenoid was disconnected. Since then we've rewired both front and rear diffs on separate selectable switches in the dash.
