Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco, USA

This beautiful Japanese garden is located inside Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. It is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States.

The history of this garden is quite interesting. Before WW2 a family of Japanese caretakers lived in the garden, took care of it , greeted visitors, performed tea ceremonies, wore traditional garb, etc.. It was a genuine experience, not a tourist gimmick. Unfortunately, after the war started American citizens of Japanese decent and other Japanese residents of California and elsewhere were forced into ‘internment’ aka concentration camps in Nevada, loosing their homes, jobs, businesses, farms, everything. After the war they had to start over from nothing. It was a very dark ‘episode’ in our history. So the caretaker family wasn’t able to come back to the garden. Of course the wonderful experience pre-war visitors had has never been recreated since. This garden’s history is a marvelous, yet tragic story that is well worth reading up on. I lived within walking distance of this garden for many years. The last time that I was there about 10 years ago it was a bit bedraggled. With too many visitors the paths were wore and tired looking. The Japanese styled shrubs weren’t pruned properly, as you can see in some of the clips herein. The buildings weren’t well maintained, etc.. Hopefully this situation has improved since then.
