- Virtual machines allow one or more 'guest' operating systems to run inside another. This is useful when you need access to multiple operating systems, or for test purposes. In this video I use the Oracle open source application VirtualBox to create virtual machines in Windows 10 and Linux Mint.

As several people have noted below, when you have created a virtual machine in VirtualBox it is very handy to install what are known as “Guest Additions” in the guest operating system to improve performance (eg to allow use of full-screen mode, and the sharing of a folders with the host operating system). Some Linux distros (such as Linux Mint as shown in the video) do not need Guest Additions installed to run full-screen, and as the video was already long and involved, I chose not to cover Guest Additions in the video. In retrospect, this was a mistake on my behalf. However, in most instances Guest Additions install very easily as follows.
Boot up your virtual machine (not in full-screen mode) and in the top VirtualBox menu select “Devices” and then “Insert Guest Additions CD Image”. This mounts a virtual CD in your guest operating system, which should autorun (or ask you if it can autorun). So then just follow through the install process, including the involved reboot of the guest operating system, and Guest Additions will be added to your guest system. If the virtual CD does not autorun, navigate to it and run the appropriate file (eg it is “VBoxWindowsAdditons.exe” in Windows). Enjoy! :)

I think this video explains it very well, personally. A very good introduction to VM'ing. Just follow this process and there is no reason it won't work. I have found if you do the steps as he is doing then it makes it much easier.

I found out that if you want to access your VM from outside, or from another VM, set the network interface to "Bridged" in the guest. You need that if you want to use the VM as a server, and the default is NAT. Excellent presentation.
I was gonna use it to record different angles in video games. Would it work good for that you think? I have a decent rig with lots of resources.

Bonus tip: the virtual machine created by VirtualBox or other virtualization software is simply a set of files. Those files can be copied to another computer and the virtual machine run there as well. (Be sure to shutdown the virtual machine before copying the files.)
So, for example, you have Linux Mint in a VirtualBox virtual machine on your Windows computer. You also have a Mac computer wih VirtualBox installed. Copy the files of the Linux Mint virtual machine folder to the Mac in its virtual machine folder. For the specific details of how to do this use Google or RUclips to find examples.
It is also possible to do this with VirtualBox on one computer and VMware Player on another. Although, it gets a little complicated. Again, Google or RUclips to find specific tutorials.

I've had simply copying 'em elsewhere fail. However, exporting an .OVA worked great. At least for my own... when I tried to import someone else's .OVA, it threw up all over itself. May not quite have the hang of this VM thing yet. :)
I have installed virtual Box on my Windows 10 Pro laptop. Getting ready to run it on this laptop. Found this video doing a search on RUclips which helped me get the program ready to run. Thanks Chris for this video helped a lot. Now I can run some Linux distro's without having to install them on my hard drive.

Important note: it is not advisable to use external storage such as a USB hard drive or flash drive for the virtual machine folder. Performance of a virtual machine is directly a function of disk speed. Flash drives are too slow and can be worn out pretty quickly with the amount of disk writes the virtualization software makes. External USB hard drives, while not prone to wear out like flash drives, do suffer speed issues due to the bottleneck of the USB port. Also, if the USB drive gets accidentally disconnected the virtual machine files may get corrupted.
What about an SD card?

@@dailleursstraits - the point is that having the virtual machine files on a USB device is a speed bottleneck. There is also the risk of accidental disconnection.
An SSD is probably not going to wear out unless it is a small capacity unit. The smaller the capacity the fewer chips it has. Chips are what have the write lifespan so the more chips the longer the life.
Look at the specs for the SSD on the manufacturer website. The value you want to look for is TBW, or terabytes written. This is the maximum for the drive. It’s easy to see how TBW is affected by drive capacity by looking at other capacity versions of the same series.

If you GPU Passthrough your graphic card to Windows in a virtual machine, you can play all Windows games at near native performance 95-98% and also run graphic intensive softwares like Adobe Premiere for example. If you have two graphic cards or if your CPU has iGPU, you can GPU Passthrough. You will need Linux, QEMU instead of VirtualBox and also Virt-Manager which is a GUI front end for QEMU.
You can follow the GPU Passthrough tutorials to set it up. If you have two graphic cards, check they are not in the same IOMMU group, you can't GPU Passthrough if they are in the same IOMMU group. You shouldn't have this problem if have one graphic card and if CPU has iGPU, you can use iGPU for Linux and passthrough GPU to Windows VM. GPU Passthrough will be hard for novice users to setup right now as it is not yet to a stage where anyone can point and click passthrough GPU.

this is great, I'm going to use this to keep my fresh built PC safe from scammers , it happened to me once, luckily I realized what was going on before the damage was done, now I can access THEIR desktop like them & delete their files haha , add viruses or create a syskey to lock them out & hopefully save someone else from being scammed, thank you for this video, it was very straight forward & easy to understand

Hi there. Awhile back I posted on here that whenever I tried to set up a VM that ran Linux Mint (19) my initial desktop screen after establishing the VM was all scrambled like static and unusable. Since you actually took the time to offer a reply, I thought I'd post the solution since I figured it out and since this appears to be somewhat common.
After many days of frustration, I found the answer right under my nose...in the Linux Mint release notes under "Known Issues!" (I feel silly having missed it)
To fix the issue, simply hit the Host key (which is usually the Right Ctrl key on a Windows host, or the left Command key on a Mac host) and F1, then hit Host+F7 to go back, and voila! Fixed! For Mac users, be sure to hit the fn key to activate the function keys when you execute these commands.

I installed VitualBox and followed along installing Linux mint and Windows XP. I had a little trouble installing Windows XP but finally got it to boot from the CD-ROM drive. Thanks for the information I have a few iso's I can use. I have a 80GB external HHD with a USB adapter and that is what I save my Downloads to. I used the same folder you did on the drive and it seems to work fine.

Right now, whenever I install a Ubuntu VM on Vbox installing drivers and enabling 3D support is a few extra steps that I always wind up googling to see if I’ve done correctly.
So making video as fast as native out of the box is incredibly welcome.
John Simon - I would welcome an Intel processor for this but you'd have to agree they are very expensive. An Intel Core i9-7940X is 1500 USD! The hope that AMD might add multiple GPUs per processor would be better for VMs if the heat can be managed plus the fact that Intel GPUs are rather weak. Either way this really opens the door to a lot of great stuff.
If you get an ugly corrupt screen when Linux first runs use (Ctrl+Alt F1) & then back with (Ctr+Alt F7) to display correctly.

Yes, even though I taught certification classes at the college, I could never quite get across the concept of a virtual machine to new folks, just kept getting the deer in the headlights look. Subnetting was an easier concept for them to grasp.
If you install VBOX guest additions you'll find that Win XP is cured of it's quirks. No more double mouse, and you'll have proper screen auto resize.

A tip. After setting up the VM, do not go into settings for that VM before starting it. If you do then the First Start Wizard does not run. You then have no easy way to install an ISO file. I had to 'remove' my VM and recreate it. Then the wizard ran fine.
Agreed. But note that doing into the general settings for VirtualBox will not create this issue -- only changing the settings for a new machine.

Some years ago I used VirtualBox to run four VMs and have them communicate with each other - one running an obscure network server implementation running on NT 4.0 (Banyan's StreetTalk for NT), whilst the others were various clients running MS-DOS, Windows 95 and NT. The notable thing about this is that they were communicating with each other via a custom protocol over the VMs virtualised ethernet.
I had hoped to get the native Banyan server OS installed in yet another VM, but couldn't get the OS to recognise the VirtualBox CD drive to complete installation.
I use Virtual Box a lot for experimenting. Another thing you can do with the network configuration is to create a virtual network to allow two virtual machines to talk to each other as if they are on an isolated LAN network. I have used it, for instance, testing out setting up a Linux distribution as an internet firewall where the virtual Windows 7 machine had to go through the virtual Linux machine to get access to the internet as it was only linked to the virtual LAN network with no access to the physical LAN network. The virtual Linux machine was set up with two LAN ports, one linked to the physical LAN port and the other linked to the virtual LAN port. I have also found running a copy of Open Media Vault on Virtual Box as a good way to turn on and off access to files on my external drives through the internet. I then can just by running a virtual computer on my system have a way I can access files when I am away and want to be able to access them, but easily shut down access to them when not needed.
Hopefully the scammers never learn how to do this lol

@@bison8745 yes, but it depends on how bad the virus is. If it’s just a simple trojan you should be fine. I believe it is for the most part uncommon for a virus to be able to infect your actual OS. Someordinarygamers’ channel can give a lot more information since he does exactly what you’re talking about.

Sweet. Just a few days ago I was trying to install Windows 98 SE in VirtualBox 5.2.6 from an Installation CD and was having a little trouble getting VirtualBox to recognise the CD in the optical drive.
What a small world it can be! :)
You have to change the priority of boot and put First the cd unit
I had same I just copied contents of CD to an iso file using Anyburn and mounted that as a virtual optical drive.
Try installing msdos and cdrom drivers first. Then run win98se setup.exe after you type d: in msdos. I did this with w98se before and i had no problem :) hope this helps!
I used a copy of the Windows 98SE boot floppy to install a copy of Windows 98SE. It was a .img file I attached after adding a virtual floppy disk controller.
Great. Now install VM in your virtual Linux install and run Windows in it. :-)

I run a dual boot system XP home 32 bit and Win 7 64 bit (for reasons I'll not bore you with now).
My sound card isn't supported in XP and I was wondering whether or not a host machine running Win 7 could control my sound card allowing me to play sound from a virtual machine running XP as a slave device?
If so, then no more dual boot :-)
This may indeed potentially work. I have got sound out of XP in VirtualBox with no configuration required after the install.

I now have an update to my previous post.
A little background....
I have moved from having XP 32bit to Windows 7 64 bit as my main OS. This was so that I can run Cubase 9.5, which is exclusively 64bit.
My old 32 bit plug ins will not work via a bit bridge from Cubase 9 onwards, so when I upgraded, I kept my old 32 bit system running an older version of Cubase and added a new hard drive with the new 64 bit OS, but dual booting from the BIOS when required.
I was interested in VirtualBox as I thought that it may save me time booting and re-booting between drives.
Okay, this is what happened....
I installed VirtualBox, but had to exit the program and re-open it to run my virtual XP to get any sound playing.
On inspecting the sound playback device in the control panel , the sound device is listed as 'Intel(r) Integrated Audio'. This is now playing sound happily through my Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (connected over firewire), but at 44.1kHz and not my default 48kHz...... not an issue for test purposes.
Getting to my USB drives was fun...the host application (Windows 7 64bit) grabbed anything plugged in and I had to' eject' the disc by right clicking the drive icon and selecting 'eject' and then I had to select it for use in the virtual application from 'devices' in the Oracle VM menu (not visible the virtual XP until I had). I then had to remember to eject the USB device to use it in the host without unplugging it (just like remembering to un-mount a USB drive when removing it from a Mac).
However, I wasn't able to access any files from my fixed drives, so, for my purposes, I will need to continue to dual boot from XP to 7.
I do like the fact that you can test a new OS and run old software really easily using VirtualBox, so I will be using it again.
**A NOTE OF CAUTION**??
I noticed in virtual XP that it wouldn't open any https sites using IE and that it may have opened up a non secure port on the network to access some http sites on the internet, thus bypassing my AVG on the host...just thought I'd mention it.

I have a question, if I get a virus on this virtual machine, will I have the virus even in normal Windows?
In theory the virus should only impact the virtual system.
Suppose if we have to test a virus , and if close the network settings, is the virus going to enter in my host os is or not???
Potentially a virus can infect a host from a virtual machine, though the chances will be smaller if you shut down the network connection.
if you close the connection it won't affect the host. I tried it once, the only infected are the VMs
I have read that there are some viruses that are smart enough to realize they are running in a VM and to cross over (and there is quite a lot of discussion about such possibilities online. Certainly it is unlikely. But I would not want to say "never" in this situation where hardware is clearly being shared.
Yes there could be a chance for a virus to work. It is very dangerous especially when one is working on a computer having some really important data. But at that time our Antivirus software comes into play. Thanks everyone for your reply.
Depends. Best option is to have antivirus (if applicable for your guest platform), and a sandboxing application. On Windows, I have Sandboxie, and on Linux I use Firejail.

I love virtual machines! On my desktop I have recreated some of my favorite old PCs (right down to applications) MS-DOS 6.0, WFW 3.11 (on MS-DOS 6.22), Win98 SE (with the "infamous" Plus! package and Win XP SP3. A bonus of Virtual Box is that the machines can be "exported" for not only backup of your VMs, but put them on multiple PCs!
