Thanks for such a thorough tutorial. Every time some question popped in my head, within a minute or so, you answered it! I hope to make a t-shirt quilt for my grandson for his high school graduation using shirts his mom is collecting for me. I think it'll be a great way for him to relive his youth! You're a born instructor...can't wait to see what's next on your or the FQS RUclips channel!!!
I’m so thankful for your kind feedback, I can’t wait to see what you make. I’ll have my second long arm up and running soon so my wait time should decrease significantly! I’ll text you soon!
Thank you for the great video. I am getting ready to try my first T-Shirt quilt for my granddaughter. She brought me 6 T-shirts (by surprise) and asked if I would make her a wall hanging with them. This video helps so much!
Great information & nice to meet you, Gina Tell. I made a Sorority T-shirt quilt for a teacher, about 15 years ago, as her only daughter was being graduated from college in the spring. I was asked, agreed on a price & timeliness. So glad she gave me 5 months to work on it. It turned out beautifully but it was difficult for me to machine quilt as I didn't want to stitch over any of the vinyl pictures/words. I ended up stitching echo stitches around smaller motifs & square or rectangle straight stitching on the t-shirt block. I made sashing from the bottom of the cut off t-shirt fabric blocks that already had interfacing ironed on & it worked out well. I have made a few others, too. I included photo transfer blocks, per the recipient's wishes. I used the front & back necline, still together on a few blocks, as it added dimension. I cut my t-shirts up, still as if on a person, & cut up the sides & cut off the sleeves. Occasionally there was a motif on a sleeve that went into a combined block (of smaller labels or motifs). Maybe when you return, you can suggest possible quilting tips for the t-shirt quilts. Great tips, thanks, Gina!!!
So nice to meet you Gina Tell. This is a great tutorial for tee shirt quilts. My daughter is saving up old tee shirts from my grandson (9 y.o.) so I can make a quilt for his high school graduation. I am filing away your instructions. P.S. Looking forward to the planner cover tutorial!!!
In my T shirt quilt, I had many shirts where the picture was on the back and then there was a small logo or name above a front pocket. I cut out the logo or name and made a strip of them which was used as a border or sashing to make smaller blocks fit with larger blocks.
This is a wonderful video for making tshirt quilts! I'm getting ready to start working on my granddaughter's middle school shirts and these instructions helped immensely! So many good ideas! Thank you so much! . . . Cindy
Thank you for the tutorial Gina. It reminded me that I have a bag of t-shirts in my closet that one of my granddaughters gave me before she went back to college last Fall. I need to get busy working on those shirts. Thanks for all your tips.
Great tutorial, Gina!!! I use to buy t-shirt from the places we visited, I love to travel so I saved some of those. While I was watching you I started wishing I would have saved all of my dad’s shirts, they would have been perfect! Just an idea for others. Thank you so much!!
I really enjoyed your tips and ideas. I recently guided a first time quilter make a t-shirt for her teenage daughter, never making one myself. We sashed blocks, used a Minky backing and had a local quilt shop long arm it. It turned out amazing. We worked together with text messages and photos plus a u-tube video or two. She has talked about making a second t-shirt quilt at some point. Now we are making table runners with star blocks together. She’s hooked! It’s so rewarding mentoring.
I have only made about 3 T-shirts quilts. But you made it so much more simple. Thank you for all these wonderful tips & tricks…it was wonderful. Loved seeing all you quilts.
Thanks for breaking down the each step and making it so straight forward. I have always had one of these quilts in the back of my mind to do but as a newer quilter thought it would be better to get a few regular quilts under my belt first. Now I feel more comfortable about the whole process. Thanks very much for all the tips.
Thanks for a very helpful tutorial! I have been asked to make T-Shirt quilt for my graduating granddaughter. My favorite tip is to cut Tees 15” & then trim to 12”. Of course I’m saving this to review all the other tips too!😍
Thanks so much for an awesome tutorial! My mom passed away almost 2 years ago and I think I’m finally ready to make a quilt. I have a lot of her clothes but don’t have any ideas for a layout. This has helped.
Thank you so much for this video! I have so many t-shirts from my granddaughter and now collecting for my great-granddaughter that I want to make quilts with! Your instructions were so easy to follow! I feel more confident tackling these projects!
Great tutorial! I made a couple of these for my boys years ago. I was not quilting at that time and was kind of just trying to figure it out. This is a much better way to do it! My daughter in law wants me to make her one from her old gymnastics t-shirts.I am going to do it your way this time.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I have been saving T-shirts for years. I plan to make a quilt with them. I will definitely refer back to this video when I get around to actually working on them. PS - I wish you had a RUclips channel. That’s where I watch mainly. I do Instagram some, so I’ll follow you there. Let us know if you plan to have a you tube channel. You are a great teacher and would make great videos!!! Thanks💕🧵
I actually just started one, but I will also continue to do videos with FQS, I have another video that will release here in the next couple weeks too! Thanks 😍
Thank you so much Gina! Your tutorial with all your knowledge couldn't have come at a sadly better time! My sister's and I are making a memory quilt for a dear loved one we lost way to early to cancer in March!❤
Love this! I’ve been wanting to make a T-shirt quilt for a very long time but wasn’t sure where to start. You’ve provided so much helpful information and I’m grateful.
Thank you for sharing - VERY concise instructions and tips. I have SO many tshirts that have seen better days, and rather than toss them, I will try to do something like this. I’m a quilter, but never got into tshirts, so how’s my chance ❤️
I love this! I wish you could make me one! My mother just passed 9 days ago and I have a lot of her tshirts ,sweaters, sweatshirts and I’d love to have a blanket made😢.
This is one of the easiest tutorials I have seen for a t-shirt quilt. My question is this: Do you put a backing fabric before quilting, or does the stabilizer become the backing?? I'm almost embarrassed to ask because I have made garments and even wedding gowns, but I have never made a quilt. Thanks for your advice. I look forward to watching more of your tutorials. 🩷
I'm not sure if someone answered you already or not - yes you need backing fabric for the quilt. The stabilizer becomes part of the tee shirt material to make it less stretchy and easier to sew.
Love your tutorial! Question, do you leave the paper foundation on if using or remove it and then put interfacing? I’m so using the log cabin foundation paper on the T shirt quilt I’m making for my boss for her retirement.
Have you ever used Pellon SF-101? It is a woven fusible interfacing to remove all stretch. It is all that I have used and I am curious of your thoughts if you have tried versus the lighter that you showed. Always trying to learn more for the next time you know. Thanks for your video.
Thanks for your great video, Gina! I am currently making a t shirt quilt for my daughter so good timing!!! Would you suggest having a t shirt quilt quilted on a long arm or tying it? I’m putting sashing on between the tshirts too.
This is great, thank you! Does the fusible interfacing gum up your needle when you are quilting it? If so, is there anything you can do to prevent it, special needles to use? 😊
Gina, Your demo of T-shirt quilt making was inspirational. I have been asked to do shirt but my kid is the only kid I'm doing that kind of quilt for. You didn't say anything about the quilting process for the home quilter. Do you have advice about the quilting other than Longarm?
Straight line quilting is always great on these kind of quilts at home, or diagonal crosshatch. Both techniques can be found in my previous videos with the Ultimate Beginner Quilt series on the FQS RUclips channel.
I have my T-shirt quilt top done, and would like to know what kind of backing to use. Flannel? Minky? Also, what kind of batting? Do you always use batting? What color thread do you recommend for multi colored quilt blocks? Thanks so much!
Can you use other types of material besides 100% cotton? For example, polyester/spandex? Or sport jersey style fabric? If so, do you just put the fusible interfacing on them like you would other blocks? Thank you!
Yes, the quilt behind me on the wall has a couple football jersey shirts, same process, however you “might” want a fusible that is a little heavier than the 906F I used. Also be careful pressing them, use the parchment paper because you don’t want the Jersey numbers to melt on your iron.
I would suggest reading the directions on the label for the specific interfacing that you plan to use. Im sorry, I’m not sure I understand your question.
A friend wants me to make them a t-shirt quilt, but with a fleece backing instead of using batting & backing which would make it more of a blanket. I don’t think the quality would be as good with a fleece backing but I have not seen one. Your thoughts?
Hi@@jaynebromley :) I am always surprised by how many people ask me questions about making a quilt of any kind with no batting. I think it would be ok, I just don't do it because I think the combo of the 3 layers makes the quilt more stable and last longer, and I love the feel of a quilt. I think over time the seams on the quilt top will pull apart more easily if it only has 2 layers, especially if one of them is fleece, but again just my opinion. I have not put that to the test. If I were you I would explain your reasoning to the friend, and do only what you feel comfortable with.
Can you mix cotton squares, flannel squares and t-shirt squares in the same quilt? If so, should they all be backed with fusible interfacing? ( I figured no since the interfacing is really to limit stretch)
Hello Dee! Gina Tell said that most of the sports T-Shirt quilts she makes have several different kinds of material, it is not necessary to stabilize all of them, just the stretchy shirts.
Hello Julie! It depends on what type of heat press you are using. The stabilizer that you are planning to use should have information on what temperature you should use.

I do prefer the lighter, probably just personal preference though. I don’t starch fabric either, I guess I like a little bit of flex in my fabric.
Thanks for your great video, Gina! I am currently making a t shirt quilt for my daughter so good timing!!! Would you suggest having a t shirt quilt quilted on a long arm or tying it? I’m putting sashing on between the tshirts too.

Nope, I have never had any issues, the needles I use are linked below. Thanks for watching!

I would suggest reading the directions on the label for the specific interfacing that you plan to use. Im sorry, I’m not sure I understand your question.
What backing and batting do you recommend for t-shirt quilts? Anything different from ‘regular’ quilts?

How did it work quilting through the interfacing on a longarm?

Why is my stabilizer stick on my cover cloth?
If you use fabric, can you starch it?
Yes, it should be fine since all your shirts are likely preshrunk from years of use.

Hello Linda! There was 20 shirts in the quilt.
Do you quilt your T-shirt quilts?
Yes, I quilted both of these on my long arm, but I’ve done them on my domestic machine in years past too.
Do you quilt over the t-shirt design or save it for the sashing?
@@julieborders2790 I do both, some vinyl is more heavy so I just do a little in that area, but yes I quilt over everything.
What is on the back, please
