CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Free birds Roxie (Renee Zellweger) and Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) keep up the pace with their "Hot Honey Rag" act.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A starry-eyed would-be star discovers just how far the notion that "there's no such thing as bad publicity" can go in this screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Chicago, originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. In the mid-'20s, Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is a small-time chorus dancer married to a well-meaning dunderhead named Amos (John C. Reilly). Roxie is having an affair on the side with Fred Casley (Dominic West), a smooth talker who insists he can make her a star. However, Fred strings Roxie along a bit too far for his own good, and when she realizes that his promises are empty, she becomes enraged and murders Fred in cold blood. Roxie soon finds herself behind bars alongside Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a sexy vaudeville star who used to perform with her sister until Velma discovered that her sister had been sleeping with her husband. Velma shot them both dead, and, after scheming prison matron "Mama" Morton hooks Velma up with hotshot lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere), Velma becomes the new Queen of the scandal sheets. Roxie is just shrewd enough to realize that her poor fortune could also bring her fame, so she convinces Amos to also hire Flynn. Soon Flynn is splashing Roxie's story -- or, more accurately, a highly melodramatic revision of Roxie's story -- all over the gutter press, and Roxy and Velma are soon battling neck-to-neck over who can win greater fame through the headlines. A project that had been moving from studio to studio since the musical opened on Broadway in 1973, Chicago also features guest appearances by Lucy Liu and Christine Baranski.

Love the difference in their facial expressions during this. Velma, an old hat at this, using a stage smile and sultry looks, whilst Roxie, who is now living her dream, is grinning wildly and hamming it up
Probably something to do with the PERFECT casting in this movie - CZJ is a Broadway veteran while Renee was very inexperienced in musical theater (though she more than pays for it in enthusiasm!)
Cool observation. I never really thought about it or noticed it but you’re right.
a good duo for this kind of dance performance irl, too - fans have the old girl they’ve come to know and love and the cheerful young newcomer who’s clearly so happy to be there
I love the message of the movie - if you murder your lover while cheating on your husband, you too can wind up a broadway sensation!
They aren't on Broadway however the musical itself is a Broadway production
Living the dream
*And all thanks to how that the news media and those who read/listen to them don't know any better and are too seduced by notoriety and infamy to pursue the truth.*
🤣
I think the message of the movie is how media works:
Like how media can make people believe; being thirsty for the people in spotlight and when they're no longer in the spotlight, this person is irrelevant in a snap.
Also, one of its messages is fame is not forever, the world doesn't revolve only around on one person.
What I really like about this production, is the light fixture in the background and how imperfect it is. We can see that there are lightbulbs that are out, irregular lighting, and even can see a faint outline of the upcoming surprise of Roxy and Velmas names. It really gives, at least to me, that feeling of theatrical imperfection that makes it seem all the more alive. If the lighting was perfect, it would feel artificial.
When this movie came out, I couldn't beleve that CZJones and Renee Zellweger could dance that wonderfully. A lot of hard training, no doubt. And great talents, too.
Espectacular.
You can tell they both worked their asses off for this movie. Well done ladies.
I disagree. Their arses were still firmly attached. Just to make sure, I’ll play the video over again. 🤣
@@georgerebovich3758 lol
I love Richard Gere’s reaction when they come out with the guns 😂😂🤣
He was like ''ladies I had to do some shady things, dance at court for you and now you use your past as a non-sutil wink to the public for some humor? Oh the public loves it, I guess they learned from the best.''
The irony is that they are openly selling themselves as the criminals they both are and the audience are lapping it up, while the only innocent woman within the prison (Hunyak) is also the only one to get hanged!
I love the ending so much. "We couldn't have done this without you" that last line is amazing
I cannot believe this movie was nearly 20 years ago. Still one of my all time fave musicals.
they clearly got the inspiration from trina vega
scungy CHICAGOOOOO CHICAGOOOOO it's a city that's exciting it's a city that's inviting it's a city for a woman just like meeeee over there I see Lake Michigan I think I'm really fitting this city is my perfect cup of teaaaaaa
Shecagoooooo 😂 😂
THIS TOWN ISNT CHICAGO ANY MORE, I WILL NAME IT SHE-CARGO *people clapping and laughing* I’m funny...
@Faith I’m sorry but I don’t think Trina Vega liked jazz or tango.
CHICAGOOOOO CHICAGOO
No one will ever include Catherine on one of those undeserved Oscar lists. She was brilliant in this.
she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for this film tho
@@Le-Abdollen I think that's what they meant, no one will say she didn't deserve the Oscar she got.
Honestly when you look at this is scene from a choreographic point of view the choreograph (while great) isn’t actually that hard or complicated but it’s the amazing camera and editing direction that really makes this scene so cheeky and engaging and just shows why films are so engaging as opposed to theatre
Fosse choreographed I think.
Yeah tbh the sound effects, camera work, and editing is what makes this scene great. If you were to see them do this live, it would not have the same effect
It's almost as if they gave us...the ol' razzle dazzle. How can we hear the truth above the roar?
I thought the same thing when I realized the scene has cuts every 2 seconds.
@@Madmen604 No, this isn’t Fosse’s choreography.
no one:
the baby in catherine’s stomach: 👶⬇️⬆️➡️⤵️↙️↘️↔️🔄
I never saw the movie, but in the Broadway show, it turns out, she made up being pregnant for media attention.
lololololololololo
Which one is catherine
@@ChocoBerry_12velma, the one with the black hair
She wasn’t pregnant during filming, she was pregnant during award season
Both of them are VERY talented triple-threats.....
Yeah they're singers, dancers and murderers.
(Muppet movie joke)
I clicked on this clip because I am a HUGE CZ jones fan, but I have now watched it hundreds of times and I don`t know who to focus on, they are both stunning, great legs, figures out of this world, and talent oozes out from every pore. THEY ARE BOTH MAGNIFICENT.
I like the joke where they were holding the guns and you can even see the lawyer laughing
I always wondered, if this was true or just again Roxie's dream...glad Rob Marshall made that so clear in the commentary by saying "Think what you want!" XD
I say no it’s real. I hate when filmmakers do that
The main reason I think it's real is because Roxie's ideal dream would've been a solo performance, not a duo. Kinda like how she acted during "Can't Do it Alone". But anything is possible!
@@LittleLotteWanders actual dreams don't work the way you want, e.g. nightmares.
Andrew Mark yes but every song in the movie usually represents something ideal for Roxie. She makes everything up to end up in her favor (For example when she believes Billy will accept “love” instead of money when in reality he’s only in it for the cash)
Andrew Mark off topic but you’re assessment of dreams is a bit one dimensional. You can certainly control your dreams, just depends on if you’re a lucid dreamer or not
Renee is pure talent. She is so versatile. True actor!
Did you know that Catherine-Zeta Jones was pregnant while filming Chicago? Pretty amazing, considering.
She was not
She wasn't, but even if she was then so what? Women work pregnant all the time, even athletes.
She found out she was expecting while shooting. In this final scene she was three months along
sebernalca Her kid was born april 2003 this film was released dec 2002 and therefore filmed 2001/early-midish 2002, if she was pregnant it was only for the very end not months
Andrew Mark he didn’t say there was anything wrong with it. It’s just a little fact.
Jones is incredible here, man what a performance. So smooth. Amazing.
Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones two Legendary actresses that I sincerely adore and love.
I just love when the light behind them suddenly flashes on. There's just something great about it.
Renee has the flapper body type that typified the era and was tailor made for the fashions. She’s also giving the attitude and sass of those fun-loving ladies. Another good visual representation of that era and modern woman is Phryne Fisher (played by Essie Davis) in the PBS series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries adapted from books by Kerry Greenwood. The setting is Australia.
So few musicals into movies work… this is one of those magic few
Both these Renee and Catherine did an incredible job here!
Great choreography. And those legs........ WOW!
Yes fabulous legs!!!
This is a very creepy comment.
@@darthslayder6904 why
They've been photoshopped!
Everything is creepy lol they have hot legs and this is fact
not me clapping in the end as if I was in the audience lol
I love how Billy and Mama Morton are in the audience as well.
If it was Roxie's dream, I'm not sure Velma would be in it ;)
I always wondered, if this was true or just again Roxie's dream...glad Rob Marshall made that so clear in the commentary by saying "Think what you want!" XD
After watching Gymenth Paltrow trying to do this in Glee and failing miserably, I always come here to appreciate CZJ class and beauty.
Bone broth is not the same
Too perfect for words. The only (silly) gripe would be about historical inaccuracy: I don't think they could do all that special effects with the lights back in the 1920s :)
Hey, that's movie magic for ya!
David Larry it’s a movie....
Isn’t this technically all Roxie’s imagination anyway
@@lukemckenzie0121 no not this part. Yes all of the performances other than this one are, but this part is real. Plus to reply to the original comment, I think there is a lot of historical innacuracy but its just a movie 😂
Gene Kelly would be proud of them.
I can’t believe this movie is 20 Years Old such a Oscar winning Classic.
It's always amazed me how "Actors" and/or singers can be such good dancers when trained.
Another great example is in the movie Xanadu when Olivia Newton John tap dances with Gene Kelly.
Catherine started out on the West End and made her break in 42nd Street as Peggy Sawyer
It always made me wonder what "actors" are for if they CAN'T do any of this...I mean most of them can only talk and walk. Stunts for physically challenging scenes, stunts for dancing, other people's voices for singing. Catherine deserves all the awards for being able do all that herself. Dancing, singing, acting, amazing tricks (in "entrapment"). In addition to be increadibly feminine and fascinating.
@@lalala2874 Well there are plenty of great actors who can only act dramatic or comedic
"We could never have done this without you". -Roxie
So true.
This is probably the only production where the movie is better than the musical
Uh, I don't know about that. It's certainly close though.
hairspray is good too
Yeah, but the only problem with Hairspray is it doesn’t include the Von Tussles part in “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. Cause that part is supposed to uncle all of the characters onstage.
Sound of Music
Little Shop of Horrors
Magnifica Zeta Jones.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love this ending and this Velma is the best in the world.
When I first saw this clip before knowing it was a movie, I thought this is a real life musical (live performance) and thought it was super impressive that they pulled off every beat
I know Catherine is the professional dancer, but I couldn’t take my eyes off Renee. It’s hard to be believe she isn’t a professional dancer, too.
FIRST MUSICAL I ever liked & actually got me to see others. It’s so great!
I really love the fact that they came out with guns! XD
Another timeless musical I like very much.
One of the definite scenes....
I watched this movie dozens of times and still haven't got tired of it. IT AMUZES ME EVERY TIME.
Anybody else notice that the two switch positions when it cuts to them firing at the screen?
That's cause the sign reads "Roxy and Velma" makes sense to me
A wizard did it
They prolly crossed each other
Continuity !!
Check scene.
@@larryscott3982 Also the machine gun stands appear and disappear when needed.
Yes! This is spectacular.
More movie musicals, please.
This is like the best scene ever.
Imagine dancing this for ur school talent show
just goes to show you. even if you blatantly kill the guy you cheated on your husband or kill your sister you can still become loved by millions
True! Tony Blair killed hundreds of our servicemen and he is still living high on the hog, anyone else would have spent the rest of their lives in jail for what he has done..
Renee is very cute but Catherine is really sexy...
Renee is raunchy....totally wild. Zeta is too controlled
Adrienne Clark- i agree, Renee is bouncy and her movements are loose and reflects the style of the era.
The old renee, now she is ugly plastic
At that time movies were escape from reality to a wonderful world with no rotten tomatoes and people hating it after seeing the trailer and u go and see a movie no aworld unfoled infront of u and going home saying wow just wow.
Best adaptation and best cast! I watched the movie hundreds of times😄😆❣The editing is superb, easily one of best musical ever and they used minimal CGIs!
ahahah pay attention to how Catherine shots at 1:52 it's too funny lol
Catherine Zeta Jones is the most beautiful and talented actress in Hollywood. ❤
what are you smoking? Not even close.
She can't compare to Garbo.
I can’t take my eyes off Renee ❤ her body is in the best shape and she’s fantastic dancer here
This will live forever
These dancers are amazing 🥀🥀 🤗🦋🐛
Was obsessed with this movie as a child
1:21 this is my favourite part, to the end.
I wish they used this choreo for the Broadway stage production! It’s so much more animated and goes better with the music in my opinion.
Catherine deserved the Oscar!
More than one I would say...
I wish they would’ve done the original choreo but I still like this one!
THE BEST OF ALL...4SURE ☆☆☆☆☆
I think the both of them were great.
I love this kind of stuff :3 jazzin' and jivin'!
im so glad this movie has a happy ending
I wouldn't consider it a happy ending since two murderers got away
tanm bou well, as they say, he had it coming
@@SweetlySerene lol
"and they never remarried, and history regarded them as very close friends and roommates." - my girlfriend upon her first viewing
This still gives me so much life
CZJ is a wonderful Dancer🤩🤩🤩✨
the only thing I really miss in the movie are their final lines from the show which to me sum it up perfectly
they have the final lines. they say it during this end scene while everyone is cheering and taking their photos.
@@jboao I didn't specify, I meant the lines "A lot of people have lost faith in America and in what America stands for, but we are the living examples of what a wonderful country this is"
1:53 the way Velma was shooting the gun always makes me laugh 😂
I don't know why I always have the sensation that Renee is chewing gum the whole time 😂
Catherine was fabulous in this
I didn’t want this movie to end a classic love Renee Zellweager!❤️👍🥂
no wonder it's weird. at 1:48, roxie is always left of velma , but at 1:52, before they did the shooting act, roxie is now at velma's right
Catherine has the edge in precision.
Rewelacyjne! Świetne kreacje aktorskie. ❤
The random post showing up I love it
They are both excellent!!! 😘😘😘
RENEE! RENEE! RENEE!
just a detail i like (might be wrong of course)
in the one part at the end, they both hold tommyguns. (i assume its a reference to roxie shooting fred, (it not might be it cause velma also has one)
If you have the CD of this movie, they have a director's out take section where he comments on each scene, what went right, and what went wrong, etc. Apparently the big board of lights behind them wouldn't shut off all the appropriate lights when the women were "shooting" it. They had to have multiple takes and fix it a few times...but finally got it right and it worked. Really interesting. Fantastic movie.
Great movie.Great stars.
Catherine zeta jones and Renee zellweger must have had a great fun time
Doing this scene
Best in years
Such a great movie
I just love this kind of dance!
It's The Charleston.
A. Xak
Exactly.....Very close to Fox Trot
Well Done Girls .You are A Great Team !
Great orchestra
