  • Reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins profiled a group of women in Cook County Jail’s Murderess Row, which would go on to inspire the musical “Chicago.”
    About Drunk History:
    Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

    Sabella Nitti wasn’t hanged though, she got a makeover and was freed. Like literally she got a hair cut and her nails done and all of sudden newspapers went from calling her an animal to a butterfly because of her transformation. There’s a book called Ugly Prey that talks about her and her time in Cooks County Jail and her trial.

    Read about this a few days ago, before seeing this video, and it absolutely blew my fucking mind. I couldn’t believe how accurate a lot of the musical was. The “Both Reached For The Gun” scene? That shit happened! The press conference happened! Those words were actually uttered by Beulah and her defense, and the lyrics are ripped right out of contemporary newspapers.
    Belva’s defense was also the same exact defense used in Chicago. “I completely blacked out, I can’t remember a thing”. She really *was* found coveted in blood in her home.
    Fortunately, from what I’ve read, Sabella Nitti (in the musical she’s the Hungarian “uh-uh, not guilty!” woman) was actually spared from hanging. She changed her look in that prison beauty school because the prosecution’s cased almost entirely hinged on her being an ugly “animal” and “not a woman”. I found it ironic that the prosecutors bemoaned Belva and Beulah getting free just because of their beauty (“another pretty woman goes free!” was the quote from Assistant State Attorney William F McLaughlin) yet they based their entire case against Sabella on the fact that she was ugly. They’re upholding and perpetuating the very system they claim to hate. Men will get angry and accuse women of having “privilege” because we’re forced to work within systems *they* create and uphold. Still relevant today!
    Anyway, her appeal went to the Illinois Supreme Court. A group of lawyers (including an amazing, badass, wonderful FEMALE LAWYER Helen Cirese. Yes, in the fucking 1920s, a female Yale graduate attorney) banded together to help Sabella Nitti navigate the appeals process, construct her defense and change her image.
    Her trial date kept getting pushed back over and over again until finally, hallelujah, the flimsy, circumstantial, erroneous charges were DROPPED. Sabella Nitti went free because of her image change and the good will of a band of lawyers determined not to see a woman hang for something she clearly had no part in.
    A female lawyer fights to free the first female sentenced to death in Cook County and succeeds. It’s almost a better story than Chicago itself, isn’t it? Certainly a less cynical one.
    I hate to think that people think Nitti hung because it’s mistakenly stated in this video and implied in the musical. She lived y’all!

      Yeah, It actually takes the whole night to get enough material to use. And for some reason they never remember it the next day. By which I mean they don't remember telling the story. They remember the interviewer being there and drinking, he ain't no Pill Cosby.

      There have been a few vomits and occasionally they are finished while someone is laying on the floor. I don't think there have been any full pass outs though.

    Looooooved this! Note on the musical though: Chicago is only the longest running AMERICAN musical on Broadway, Phantom of the Opera (British) is the longest running overall. Chicago was actually not very successful in its initial run, but the 90s revival was a smash hit that continued until the Broadway shutdown (and should be returning when the shutdown ends), and that is why it's the longest running American musical.

  • @tejaswoman
    @tejaswoman 5 лет назад +5

    Hope that the expanded version of the episode touches on the fact that the 1975 production was received nearly that well, because it was ahead of its time in analyzing the nature of turning criminals into celebrities. By the time of the film, we'd seen how the OJ trial turned everybody involved into a celebrity, no matter how vile and undeserving. Hell, that trial is indirectly to blame for the disaster that is the Kardashians.
