Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

I love how you literally went the distance for a cup of coffee... and then you used a sock
a used sock
haha fereal
He could have skipped that part. In the Balkans we don't use filters to make turkish coffee
ya lul
you went all the way to Mexico to get your beans only to brew it with a used sock??
I trust that the sock is an unused one.
Or else it is a consumer Health & Safety Issue.

the grassy taste was from the sock.
hahahaha!
Loren Carey it's actually more likely from his roasting method. It was a very uneven roast.
Just another one it's actually more likely that I was making a joke.
Loren Carey a shitty joke
Just another one at least five other people got it, so maybe you're defective...
Couldn't you have bought a new sock?
+SlightlyGoodGaming Our budget got tight after the Mexico trip
Ahh i feel you, great videos though, blows my mind that this channel isnt alot more popular, i been subbed for ages
Yea that is rank shit too see you guys use a used dirty sock, I don't mind gross stuff usually either but that coffee must have tasted like sour foot.
Kickstarter for Andy to get new socks. XD
all that work and he uses a sock

TatTvamAsi that was the thanksgiving episode. It was awesome
Can you pass the cranberry sauce? ☺️
Just like Augustus from Charlie and the Chocolate factory xD
Andy does what we, as mere mortals, aren't brave enough to do.
VICE News is doing what others aren't brave enough to do. They go to the different war zones, smuggle themselves into North Korea, have a secret meeting with John McAfee while he's on the run, etc.
yeah but he drank coffee... from a SOCK

Nah they don't, you know what they actually do thought? I went to some plantations (in Mexico too, but in the state of Veracruz), first of all, ALL of the grade A+ coffee, has been already bought by Italians, so none of that coffee stays in Mexico.
Then, the other is sold as a plantion brand separated by different grades and many other companies buy them, being national or international companies, then, they rebrand it.
Then the grade F coffee is the one that noone would buy, is almost for disposal, but there is where Nestle buys it for their various kinds of coffee. No joke, I didn't see it, but the plantation owners told me because it was for some work for school.
GMOs aren't bad.
Good thing you're doing here. Showing people the true hard work that goes behind the things we take for granted. Keep it up.
Techo536 Using a fucking sock too.
And the pan was top notch..
I wouldnt say hardwork but a lot of work and logistics.
The riper the sock, the better the brew
Everyone is freaking out about the sock... He roasted the fucking coffee beans with oil. I wish he took more time into learning how to actually roast coffee. 🙁
Colin Shepherd dude the beans contain oil that comes out when you roast them try to roast unroasted peanuts in a pan and the same thing will happen
Nope. I roast coffee: while roasting the oil does not come out. That will only happen if you turn your beans to charcoal and let them sit for a month, then you might see some oil. Colin is correct.
@@CasualDraws He's right, i'm a barista and we roast our own coffee at our roastery
@@CasualDraws Sorry but If it worked like that then commercial rosters would get absolutely destroyed the first time they were used..
Now for some tips in case anyone wants to try:
You _shouldn't_ add any the oil to the pan, seasoned cast iron is fine Just don't add any extra. You get much better results if you fill the oil-less cold pan with one layer of beans and use a whisk to constantly stir them while bringing it all up to temp. You have to do it over low-medium/ high-low depending on your burner and do so s l o w l y while whisking the whole time. It will seem like noting is happening for quite a while. But after a couple of hours you end up with a delicious and if you stirred enough even roast.
I'm sure it seems like a lot of work but I refuse to buy a good a multi-thousand dollar roaster and detest the roast given by cheaper home-grade units. As well as given all the work that goes into getting the "green" beans to me in the first place, makes me feel more connected to the process.
@@NWinnVR I have already been corrected I'm afraid you have arrived to late
couldn't spring for a new sock eh?
it's more nutricious that way :D

While the barista master could in theory brew it in a sock I think for beginners ,such as you and I, regular coffee brewing equipment is recommended...
well, you can brew coffee in almost anything. Hell, you can just ad the ground powder to water and get it out with a spoon. You can use Napkins, Toilet paper, or really whatever you like that lets water through.
that sock was nasty
3ndless why? It gives the sock and extra sweet flavor
straigt up.... you could have used napkins
mickeynotmouse straight*
but then he would have to make a napkin. :P
Napkins smell like cleaning products, they will ruin the coffee, but dirty socks with footy a taste... mmm hmm now that's how you do it.

Would You Travel 5,000 Miles for a Cup of Coffee?
no probably not
maybe, if coffee was rare.
If it was Starbucks
Yes because I'm a coffee fan
Wow, this video really brought back so many memories. I remember picking up the coffee beans all day long. We also used the same separating mechanism that they used which is nice to see.
Aaayyyy I live in Oaxaca! And you actually pronounced it right! :DDD
thank you so much for these videos. This one put a tear in my eye.
Please make more videos; your doing great
You did all that traveling just so that you could drink dirty sock water
Another awesome episode. Please keep them coming.

Let's hope more people watch these videos so he can earn the revenue back.

Andy fell!! I cant believe it. I had to replay it 5 times. Thanks for the coffee info and the laugh.
I love this episode so much!!! As someone who loves knowing how things were made from scratch and sort of want to make things from scratch, your channel has been amazing!!! Thank you for putting in the time and effort to make videos like this. Keep going 💕
(I've always wished I could be a farmer and make everything myself. Heh)
i like the change of style of the video.
My family is from Oaxaca! Some of them make coffee! My family is the best coffee maker in the world!!!!
ha. nice job crushing their dreams.....
Great video to show us all people that coffee does not grow at starbucks, the most important part is not to believe when a big corporation says they are paying a fair price to the coffee producers, those are only words we all want to hear, it is even worst for the workers that are hired just to pick the cherrys. I buy my coffee from a farmer directly in the town of Xico in the state of veracruz, México. I roast it and prepare it my self.
Again, great series of videos!
This guy has a job of a honors student. Over complicating simple things and I love it. This helped me appreciate simple things in life like coffee.
couldn't you have at least washed the sock??
it was a clean sock, they just get discoloured cause hardly anyone ever bothers washing white socks with only other white clothes. It's dye, not dirt.
But I would fly 5000 miles and I would fly 5000 more...
de0509 just to get my morning cup of coffee to drink it at my dorm.

Take a shot 🥃 form every comment you find the word sock in it.

Great video! Keep up the good work! Definitely a follower now.
really interesting videos. Thailand sourced coffee is probably some of my favorite. it just has a smooth fruity/nutty flavor, and is not bitter: making it great for stronger brews.
Great series! Great production quality. Wonder why it has so little views. Why did you use butter/oil when roasting the beans though? In the roasting episode they told about getting rid of the moisture, and you're kinda adding that back in now.
this dude is rich as hell! who has that much money to waste on a not so good cup of cofee! a parently this guy
I've really enjoyed your coffee series. I'm a coffee nerd and would love some of these experiences!
I got into home roasting coffee and have been doing it for about six months now. Without spending too much money, a metal bowl and heat gun is definitely the way to go. There is another cheap effective way to roast with a popcorn popper but you don't have much control in slowing down the roast with those setups. About $5-6 per pound of specialty green coffee isn't bad when you pay the same for generic roasted beans at Costco and grocery stores.
This channel deserves ten times his subscribers
Gah so many people missing the main point. You think he went all the way there to brew coffee with a sock? No, he went the distance to gain knowledge, take action and make a video for all you people who are probably wasting your life away (like me)
you deserve upvote dude
either way, he still used an unclean sock
Nobody Knows Oh, hello Mr. Everyyoutuberisevil. There was a comment chain we could’ve used your blatant ignorance and paranoia in earlier.
yuenyuen95 you could get all the knowledge you need with a damn youtube video in how to brew coffee.
They don't actually care, rather are simply farming for likes and comments. It's just a means to an end, they want that little spike in dopamine, noting more.
Finally, my feet can smell like an elderly coffee been rancher. Thanks dude!

Wow, this channel is amazing. Great job!
That sock looks like it's been used as a filter before
@ 3:07 never gets old
I've roasted my own beans on a cast iron skillet, definitely the best coffee I'd had. I'm not sure if there was an other skin that was pre-removed before they were shipped to me, but they had a chaff.
The chaff was easily removed by tossing them in a metal sifter. This tossing in a sifter was also necessary to cool the beans quickly, as you don't want them to remain hot and continue self-roasting after removed from the heat. I did it outside, and the chaff just blew off with a light breeze while tossing.
such great work bro, you deserve far more views, can`t wait for my next cup
1:11 "followed up by an 8 hour f*cking car ride"
Why go through all that trouble if in the end you will do a half ass job and use a sock and hammer to make the coffee?
This is so cool! What a life experience to go to this region to harvest coffee :-)
I want to share a story that might be a little bit out of context. Last month, I went to a small village on the mountain in Manggarai, Flores, Indonesia for a social project. I lived with the local and most of them got their own coffee plants. They are so kind and welcoming. For three days there, they gave us coffee that they made from scratch almost 4-5 times a day. When it's time to say goodbye, they even gave each of us a bag of coffee grind.
What I want to say is that I don't know they have to go through all those step to make us coffee yet they were the one who always asked us: "do you want coffee?" every time.
PS: the coffee from Flores is the best that I've ever seen. If you read this and got time to go there, do try! And based on my experience, the one which was made fresh by local is far more delicious than the one I bought on store. If you don't have any acquaintance there, you could try the ones in local coffee shop, you won't be disappointed.
Got a coffee ad before video started
Coincidence?
That’s pretty sad that the Mexican farmer can’t sell his beans at a fair price.
I love pasta I know right? I love how people are griping about him brewing coffee with a sock, but not that these folks live in abject poverty, despite their crop being among the most valuable commodities in the world. It's sad.
I almost forgot about the cup of coffee I made five minutes ago and left in the kitchen. But thanks to this video, I remembered it. Thank you for making the world a better place
I'm soooo in love with this!
9/10 when goes out to do this crazy shit, he just says its alright lol

i hope he washed that goddamn sock before using it
htme, excellent segment!!
Do you know Spanish fluently? Because whenever your in a country that speaks Spanish, you have no translator or anything.
Sargent Pugsley Yes he does, they’re just behind the camera
this was extremely awesome to watch! Ahahah i enjoyed it
As soon as he said he was making it using a sock I thought, I'm never watching one of his videos again.
Everything was fine until he pulled out the fucking sock
That's not how you properly roast a coffee
you cant roast water, so roasting a coffee is impossible.
...
@@Sharpless2 Did you not watch the whole thing or are you just being rude to someone that likely doesn't speak English as a fist language? You _do_ have to roast the beans before you can make any coffee. I'm guessing the commenter meant that you shouldn't add any oil to the pan, there wasn't enough beans in there and he started with a hot pan...
@@NWinnVR congratulations, you missed the joke. Read my comment again, and again, and again, and again until you finally understand it.
Wow what a cool adventure
You are an inspiration to me!
that sock looks realy gross

I have a 4 foot coffee tree in my living room. Funny thing is - I switched to tea a while back. hah
These videos deserve more views. They're very professional looking and well made. I personally find them quite interesting; it's a mystery why you don't have more subs.
Probably the most disrespectful approach to brewing coffee I've seen ... frying (not roasting) green coffee beans in a grease covered iron cast skillet for a start; then extracting detergent rests and cotton fibers into the brew from the hammering. No style or humor, just a sad approach which is better off popping around the corner to the next Starbucks drinking a mug of Robusta.
Ridiculousness at its best!
Andreas B. For me it was just kind of disrespectful to see that farmer struggling as he cares for those plants meanwhile make ends meet and grow his business only for the host to take said product that the man lovingly and painstakingly grew home to be thrown into his dirty gym sock. It just feels rude. "Thanks for the quality product, let me just store it in my gnarly laundry."
sweeteuthiedoll he cut corners so what? Do you eat a burger and think "Wow the farmer must've worked extra hard so I have to make sure not to over cook it, put sauce on it, add too much salt and pepper, because I'm sure that's how he would've wanted it!"?
Jade Shiota no. I don't. There have been too many times when I didn't have food to do with it something that would (almost certainly) kill the quality. And him brewing the coffee in a sock isn't the equivalent of putting too much ketchup on food--which is still edible--it's using an item that's normally considered disgusting (they don't use old laundry to brew coffee at coffee shops) to cook food. The more sound equivalent is like if you cooked your burgers on a garbage can lid. Even if you cleaned it, at one point it came in contact with something gross.
Andreas B. Relax, it a drink, not a religion
I did this all the time when I lived in Hawaii. So fresh
Omg wow. Found you from the king of random. I love your videos. Keep up the good work. :)
I would if I had to. I live on the North border of the us and coffee grows a long way away. I feel inspired to bury a 5 gallon bucket full of pre ground coffee to get me through until trade gets re-established.
this was a great video series.
I roast my own coffee, but this is taking it to the next level! By the way, when roasting in a pan you should use one that is not oiled and keep the beans moving constantly.
very economical coffee right there haha. Just like using a chorreador, I have just done a video from my trip to costa rica. .. sadly no socks though
Great thanks
My dad is a coffee taster and he uses a hot air popcorn maker to roast his coffee , it was painted seen you do it on a Pan
this is such a cool channel, i'm so glad that i found this channel
Awesome to see it from start to finish! My only question was the sock - especially since you have some experience with making paper, it might have been neat to see that extra layer of making your cup of joe with a homemade paper filter. But I'm a nitpicker; always enjoy your videos, and back you on Patreon (like everyone here should!) Keep up the good work!
Thanks! That is a good point actually, never considered using some of my leftover paper as a filter. Now I'm curious how well it would work. Maybe I'll make an extra video of that soon and test it compared to my sock.
I think we'd all love to see that! :)
I suggest against using a spice grinder for grinding coffee. If you want something that's cheap yet also high quality try for the ROK hand grinder. It's around 30 dollars and keeps a nice consistent grind.
You deserve SO much more credit. I LOVE THIS CHANNEL! Not fair Logan whoever has 10mil by burning things and you don’t have 1mil traveling the world, taking months for each video. Keep doing what you’re doing!
My favorite part of coffee beans is the outer skin which u can press into juice (it tastes similar to pomegranate juice)
The coffee bean was actually discovered in ethiopia where a sheperd found out that one day his cattle grew excited and got active after eating a certain berry. This berry was brewed into a stew by the local monks that is now called coffee
I have been to O'o farms in Maui and harvested some coffee cherries
I can't stop watching these
I like how honest he is. Most youtubers would say it's the best they've ever had and shit
For a few years I grew my own coffee beans and the pulp tasted so good! They just grind it away?
Dude Mexican people seem so chill and passionate about their work. I completely respect that.
