Important note:
You might have noticed some interference noise in the audio samples with the USB connection. In my testing I did not experience this kind of noise and are surprised to hear it in the video. I made a few more tests and the MV7 shows a slight susceptibility to interference with the USB connection which is also influenced by the used cable. Placing a smartphone right on the USB cable can introduce a slight buzzing sound. It’s not very obvious but it is there. So, be mindful how you rout the USB cable of the MV7 and try to keep it away from wireless devices.
Thank you so much for adding this comment! I appreciate your work. You're the best!
This is actually the case with any usb powered interface
The electrical interference is actually still there when using the XLR, but much quieter. If you listen carefully you can hear that the comparison with the SM7B, the noise is present in the whole video except for when we're hearing the SM7B!
And that’s why every USB mic sucks. I really don’t care about the sound curve, at the end of the day I’m able to EQ in a direction I like. But digital noise is something I can’t stand. This thing is garbage.
No humbucking coil on the mv7 I guess
The technical nature of your reviews and comparison charts is not matched on YT. I appreciate your reviews. No fluff. Just the solid facts. You put out incredibly trustworthy and sound quality viable information.
My favorite engineering-grade mic reviewer is back again
Too bad my favourite headphone reviewer isn't ;)
@@danboud8135 a sad "oof" 😔
In case you are referring to me for who knows what reason, the headphone show's resolve has far surpassed anything I could hope to achieve so you don't need to worry about that anymore
@- yeah my goal is selling as much as possible right now
@@metal571 He meant your content is missed 😔
Even if you could sum up your opinions in a reddit post, watching or listening to your videos had the same effect of tuning into a podcast.
Who knows, perhaps one day you'll fire up the old DSLR & Cardioid, and surprise us with your thoughts and opinions on audiophile tech 😌
I found your channel just a couple of days ago. Your content is amazing! Audio gear reviews that are based on measurements and also provide sound comparisons are just what is needed! Also it's great that you mainly review cheaper-end stuff, because that's what I think most people are interested in buying. Thank you for doing these, and best of luck to you!
Another fantastic, thorough video! Thank you for all the work you put into these.
I love the headphone output metric breakdown. Keep that up!
Thank you, best review of this mic I have seen thus far.
Very concise and clear review, thanks for this! Helped me pick this mic as my new replacement for a Blue Yeti ive been using for about 8 years for discord/teamspeak! Quite enjoying this mic and it was definitely worth it! Keep doing what you are doing.
Excellent comparison with technical specifications.
Great content as always Sir
Your videos are amazing, Thank you!
I honestly don't usually comment under RUclips-Videos but I've never come across reviews nearly as helpful and detailed, yet focused on the important aspects as yours. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much!!!
I prefer the MV7 for voice. The low end roll off makes it sound clearer.
Loved it, i already own 3 audio interfaces and i was still looking at buying it just bcz currently i cant afford a 7B, but now i know what to do!😉
This- as always- was a great review! Thanks so much for the insight on the MV7’s strong sides and shortcomings. In the end, sound is my reason to buy a microphone or not. I prefer the RØDE Procaster over the Shure MV7. But the Shure SM7B still reigns supreme. 😅
great presentation!
Wow ... I just became a fan of yours. Great review. Lots of details & data to back up your analysis. Keep 'em coming. Have you checked out the Rode AI-1 interface yet? I bought it over the Focusrite to pair with my Rode PodMic. IME, it's a really nice unit.
Also ... Shure ... if you're listening ... the lack of a USB-C is a deal killer for me. I'm going to wait.
Very well done. Thanks for the review. I really hope you can review more microphone such as Rode NT1000. Thanks.
great julian..well done.. I think for my band's recording needs well go with a sennheiser or rode mic..
Please make some tests for more expensive interfaces. Great info!
You're really good at explaining audio, keep it up. Is there a ~200€ Usb mic you would recommend?
Thank you!
A test of the Aston Element seems like it would be right up your alley. ;)
Those are gaining traction at the moment, and fit right into the price-range of podcast-y gear you cover, plus most tests I've seen so far have been of the subjective or A/B test variety, with no measurements.
Thanks Julian for your reviews. Can you do a review of the MXL 770? Or a top 10 of mics?
Perfekt!
thank you for the video brother. Can you hook it up to a dslr without any other devices like a zoom or tascam?
Hey Julian! I'm using a Mv7 now and just wanted to point out that I'm monitoring my voice on a DT 770 pro 80 ohms. So I don't know why but for some reason I get enough power to drive it from the Mv7. Maybe it's an upgrade since your review but it's working great for me so far. Maybe I got lucky!
Excellent. Sub’d.
As always, very in depth. My conclusion? Too expensive for what it offers, especially sound wise.
That's basically every Shure microphone. You shouldn't be paying more than like 30 dollars for a dynamic mic.
@@r.a.1448 Apparently, basic EQ is equivalent to swimming across a channel of water, lol. No wonder these companies can charge this much, people can't even do the most basic sound processing that takes a few minutes at most.
I meditate to your reviews
haha
Have you noticed the hiss when using USB? Listen for it.
Yeah, can hear a static "hum". Very noticeable
Unfortunately every USB mic does it.
This is correct . Does the noise disappear with xlr ?
@@hollywoodheiner6028 This is correct . Does the noise disappear with xlr ?
@@كورسات.كمبيوترI don’t know. But if you you wanna use XLR, don’t even buy a mic with USB in the first place.
The best 🙆
Please do your tests with the often overlooked Mackie Big Knob Studio. To me it seems appealing but I never hear much about it.
I'm questioning myself between the nt1a and the aston origin (got the same voice's vibes as you). For streaming and singing in particular, does scarlett 2i2 is better with 2 preampli entries or is the solo enough? I can spend more if necessary. Ehrlund mic are on the run with their triangular architecture too. I'm new to sound. Thanks for the advices. You rock with your pres dude. Keep sharing!!
Dude, would you be able to do a video on the streaming targeted Interfaces? Like the GOXLR and Rodecaster? These are growing for content creation and are what I want, but not if it sacrifices quality on the pre amps, and especially headphone amp aspect.

Haha wunderbarer deutscher Akzent :D Aber gut gemacht hab dich mal abonniert!
Question If do use the xlr could I use a cloudlifter or other to help or you probably won't recommend?
I was thinking of getting one mostly just for calls and maybe gaming plus might be getting an introview
3:08 Can you make a video on how you measure and make that frequency chart of mics and interfaces ? If already did it then please give its link.
This is correct . Does the noise disappear with xlr ?
Personal opinion, but usually I do not like the sound of the sm7b. You're the first person for whom the sm7b sounds better to me. Interesting
I really like your review/s , but I want to make two comments.
1> The most obvious reason (IMO) to include the Headphone connection on the Mic is to allow the person talking into it the opportunity to monitor through headphones whilst they are talking. This means you don't have to run another potentially long cable across to where the microphone is just for the speaking person so they can hear themselves (or DAW). Your review specifically keeps referring to using the headphone output for listening to music etc, and while this MAY be done, I don't think this is/was the intention. I feel it is provided as a monitoring option for the speaker/performer, and in this way is VERY suitable. If I was wanting to listen to music or quality audio through headphones, I would not expect this to have been designed for this purpose anyway. However your points are certainly valid.
2> You mentioned that using a Mini USB was a negative as USB -C is now the newer option. I don't necessarily agree. Not everyone has transitioned over to USB C as yet and there are potential lots of users that would still be using older equipment, as well as having spare usb to Micro cable available if using the mic on a Laptop AND iPad And etc...as it has the multi connect-ability. Whilst I would anticipate a day where they will eventually transition and maybe bring out a further version of the MV7 with a USB-C connector, I am not terribly surprised by SHURE's choice to introduce it into the market place with a more 'common' USB Micro connector at this stage.
I appreciate your review however and I have since decided to purchase one and am so far very happy with it.
If I could please ask, is there a way with your comparisons and testing that you could create an EQ curve to "make the MV7" sound like the SM7B? I would like to create one myself using a MATCH EQ but I don't have access to a SM7B at the moment to create the comparison.
Thanks again!
listening to this video using studio monitors -- it has a lot of RF noise probably generated thru Unshielded XLR cables running through power cords thus affecting the mic even if it's plugged in USB or XLR.
can u tune the mic a bit in voicemeeter eq for example so it has more bass?
between 3:17 - 3:20 Listen carefully to the sibilant , there is a clip/distortion happening around that timeline, but dunno if this is just from the post processing, if it is not then I think this mic is "shurely" not recommended for singing vocals.
What about recording latency with this type of integrated recording interfaces? I have yet to find a USB mic that offers ASIO drivers.
If by chance you could match the eq of the MV7X to the SM7B like you did with the Behringer XM8500 it would be great. It could be a cheap SM7B
I love how they use the logo as a counterbalance ...
how would you eq an mv7 to sound like an sm7b?
😲 how do you measure all the nice graph's? Can you please do a BTS?
I have noticed after a certain update the MV7 has a lower sound and gain has to be turned way up...have you noticed this or seen any fixes for it?
For those who want an sm7b and don’t have an interface with enough gain (and would thus also need a cloudlifter) this is good value. $250 vs. $560
Audient Evo4, plus a basic dynamic mic (Behringer XM8500, Shure sm58 or 57)
Cheaper, better sound, more future flexibility.
For a usb dynamic mic, go Samcon Q2U, Audio Technica ATR2100, AT2005, or ATR2100X. With these capabilities, best of all worlds.
@@libertyDude1775 Podcastage tried a few of those USB dynamic mics for comparison in his review and he agreed this new Shure sounds much better.
Yes, I'm aware of Bandrew's review & microphone comparisons. If good looks, translated to good sound, this would be a no brainer. But they don't. I'm a HUGE fan of blind audio samples. Let the sound speak for itself. Frankly, I'm personally not a fan of the "usb microphone" solution (as most seem to employ). It is my opinion (doesn't have to be anyone else's), someone new to audio, looking for a first microphone, should NOT be spending $250, on a single option, new product. There are many plausible situations, where having a small quick set up available, lends itself to a USB microphone option. Considering the circumstances around most of those events, having a small usb dynamic microphone is ideal. Beyond that, I haven't been able to see logic in many other arguments (once again, just my opinion).
With the small price, form factor, clean preamps, enough gain to power an sm7b, ease of use, and capabilities of the Audient Evo4 Audio Interface (obviously, different world marketplaces, may alter this logic). When combined with one of the plethora of sub $125 microphones. Will one not only find a sound that surpasses the MV7, but will leave the future door open, to a more cost effective & diverse upgrade path. $250, for a single piece of gear in an audio chain, should never be used when describing a, "beginner," or, "first," microphone.
Just my opinion. Everyone should be allowed to reach their own conclusions.
If someone buys this microphone, all I have to say is, "Congratulations! I hope you find great enjoyment & satisfaction with it."
Do you notice a lot of RF noise/static in this video? Where it comes from?
what's the name of that adapter going from the mic stand to the MV7 mount? I've been searching for something to give me an angle on my mic.
Hey, I didn't use a mic stand when talking into the mic. I had the MV7 mounted on a Manfrotto Magic Arm which is freely adjustable.
Hello, There is lots of Esoteric and Myths around microphones.
Apparently the seem to have a "resolution" and lighter Diaphragm has better resolution therefore condenser mics are better because it has better "impulse response"
Impulse response is a real thing but people and even manufactures refuse to accept its relation to "frequency response" and that one can trough (reverse)Fourier transformation be derived from the other.
I don't get why people make up this hand wavy pseudo specs and pretend there is something magical that can't be quantified.
Wold love to see more "mythbusting" videos from you where you explain what are real specification and how to interpret them and whats Marketing
Hi Julian! Sunny here from India. Can you please give me a review of Sontronics STC-3X condenser mic. To be specific it would be better if you can make a comparison video with Aston Spirit. Thanks in advance.
I just have one question, is it ok if I connect main out from mixer to both inputs on an interface ( any under $120 USD like the M2, Focusrite, or Presonus) for recording a whole group, Guitar, Bass, Drums, and vocals? At the same time
Hey, that's ok. I even have a Tutorial for that: ruclips.net/video/Be1e0QPIPK0/видео.html

Said it somewhere else as well but if you like the sound of this might be a good starter mic since no audio interface is needed and if you then later upgrade to an actual audio interface you can keep using this mic via the XLR (or even just USB depending on use case)
True. However, the main downside is that the sound quality is roughly the same when connecting via xlr to an audio interface.

I don't like the interference it's collecting. I couldn't stand it and I'm surprised you didn't say anything about it.
He's biased
I have an issue with feedback noise and was hoping someone could help. When I stop talking or even while I'm talking, there is a sssssssss noise that becomes louder the higher the gain is. My mv7 is using the sm7b windscreen, it is on manual, gain is at 30dB, and high pass EQ is on. Turning on the limiter or compression does not get rid of the noise. Is there anything I can do about this? Maybe an OBS filter?
depending on the frequency of the hissing noise, you may be able to EQ it out.
Alternatively, it may be digital noise and a clip on RFI EMI Noise Filter might help?
i heared the hiss from usb.
Why would usb hiss?

Usb and xlr

There are some noises if you are using the MV7 via USB. Never would expect this on a shure microphone especially if you are paying 300 bugs.
This is correct . Does the noise disappear with xlr ?
Do you need a preamp for the mic when connected to XLR?
You can plug it straight into your audio interface, if that's what you mean :)
@@JulianKrause I mean like, does it needs a preamp like the SM7B?
It doesn't need a Cloudlifter or FetHead because it is much more sensitive compared to the SM7B. The built-in preamps in your interface can easily drive the MV7.
Please do your interface and headphone out tests on the $9 apple usb c dongle. It is being celebrated by audiophiles.
The interference is very audible. I bought the mic but had to return it, because although it's a nice and cheaper alternative to it's bigger brother, the plosive rejection is non-existent. Also, even boosting the gain to the max via usb/app still gives a low signal for my taste, so for 250 euros...not acceptable.
MV7 or podmic ?
Can I record poetry on this microphone?
Get the SM57 with a windscreen instead.
Gracias.
Hey 2010 called, and wants it's micro USB back 🤪 but in all seriousness the lack of type-c usb is a major negative, not future proof. No USB device should have micro connectors anymore. ☹️ Even if the device was amazing, and only ever used with XLR, the fact remains it's cheap junk, too cheap food the current standard plug, which btw is also cheap. It's makes me wonder what else is cheap?

I absolutely despise USB C with a passion because the cables are susceptible to chip damage and everything I have ever had with that connection has died on me whereas the NON USB-C connectors I have had no issues with. USB-C was made for USB 3.2 10gbps and anything else is just marketing so they can sell 30+ USD cables.
In my opinion save up the money and just get the Shure SM7B instead unless you really need to use the USB interface.
Absolutely do not. 400 dollars for a dynamic mic is more than 10x what you should be paying. There isn't a quality change, and you can adjust frequency response via EQ.
If people want a usb one they should try Presonus Revelator and that's straight USB
@@KaneAmaroq Did you really just compare some $40 no name mic to a $400 Shure mic? 🤔🙄😂
I'll give you that you can get pretty good quality mics for under $100 but to say that there isn't a quality difference means your ears are defective and need cleaning out.
@@AnthonyGoodley The fact that you think there is a quality difference in microphones past about 50 bucks tells me that you have zero understanding of how microphones work as a technology. If you actually took the time to understand the engineering behind them, you'd agree with me.
Shure, Rode, Blue, Neumann, all of those companies ride their own marketing you sell you a product that isn't worth what you pay for.
