Shure MV7 USB & XLR Microphone Review

- In today’s episode, we have a detailed look and listen to the SHURE MV7 podcast microphone. This USB/XLR hybrid microphone uses a dynamic design which is a great fit for recording at home or in other spaces without acoustical treatment. It sounds great when you connect to your computer or mobile device via USB and comes with an app which allows you to fine-tune the sound for your situation, even if you don’t know a lot about sound. But if you are more of a soundie, it also allows you to set some basic EQ settings, a limiter, and a compressor to even things out and increase the overall level of your audio.

Great video, Curtis! Appreciate this.
Thanks Gerald, appreciate you coming by!
A thorough review yet concise and easy to understand. Brilliant! Thanks, Curtis!
Thanks Ulisses.
Hooray!!!! I’ve been waiting for this video!!!!!
Thanks so much for coming by!
Incredibly detailed analysis as usual. Very appreciative!
Try the Shure MV7: ruclips.net/video/fhFCsL7bq6Q/видео.html
Fabulous video Curtis! The best microphone review I have seen (and I’ve watched hundreds). You are clear, informative, objective and a delight to listen to. Thank you.
Thanks Mark.
Such brilliant videos - you strike the perfect balance of simplicity and technical detail. Really appreciated, thanks 🙏
Thanks Alex. 👍
Absolutely great review Curtis 👍🏻 I have now been watching your reviews for sometimes, and even though I like them, I do not leave any comments, as usually in general. But I feel obliged to let you know that your reviews are impressively balanced, thrust worthy, and compelling! And this one is no exception. Much appreciated. Thumbs up, and thank you.
Thanks so much, Turaj!
Thank you Curtis for continuing to be the best in the game! I don't buy ANYTHING audio related without consulting your YT channel first. You are doing the world a service and I'm eternally grateful for it. I can't thank you enough.
Thanks Adam! Happy recording!
You did it again, I am grateful for this amazing and professional review.
Thanks!
Beautiful review, thank you for the information. I will be picking up this microphone for work and call purposes. You're in-depth information and review are greatly appreciated! Will be watching more.
Thanks Darius - I hope it works well for you!
This is the BEST review out there. To the point and clear explanation of the product. Thank you Curtis
Thanks Mandy!
AWESOME review, Curtis! Thank you so much for being so very thorough. You literally answered all of my questions about this mic. Cheers!
Thanks DEL. Happy recording!
Great review, as always!!!!
Thanks Padre.
GREAT review, as usual! I just wish they'd release a better windscreen for the MV7 that stays on better and is more effective at reducing plosives.
Thanks Tom, appreciate your feedback!
They did mr. buck, the windscreens intended for the SM7B both fit tighter, as well as doing a better job rejecting plosives by putting more distance between the screen and the capsule! Try it out and let us know your results!
Thanks Curtis, your knowledge, time and professionalism is super appreciated!
Thanks so much M Santana!
You have a great quality and i like the presentation. For me the best review-channel for mics with podcaststage. Keep it up!
Thanks Melideas!
Excellent video as usual, thanks for making and doing all the tests with all the mics.
Thanks Andy.
This is a really great review! You covered literally everything I wanted to know about this mic, and explained it in such a clear and concise way. I've dabbled with audio for a long time now, but I still learned a lot from watching this. I would really love to see a similar video for the Rode Procaster even if it has a bit less feature-wise.
Thanks, MrTypoo1.
Great review! Just got mine today and love it so far. Appreciate all of the detail, it really helped me choose. Thanks!
Thanks Gabe. Happy recording!
Great review, I have just ordered this microphone and this video helped confirm what it can do and can't do. Really appreciated that you showed the sound setup with USB which some other reviews didn't do.
Thanks Brian and I hope the MV7 works well for you!
Love your videos Curtis, very thorough as always. Thanks!
Thanks Jason!
Wow you covered everything in a pleasant tone while demoing the mic - just perfect!
👍
Great Review Curtis! You always do a thorough job.
Thanks Rhett!
Thanks for the in-depth walkthrough of the software. It was extremely valuable to me.
You're most welcome! 👍
Great breakdown!! I was looking for something just like this. Thanks a world.
Thanks Rashid.
Thank you so much for this video I really appreciate it. This video helped me in making my decision on this microphone. I believe I'm fully ready for my twitch / RUclips setup that I've been working on, my order just was placed on Amazon.
Congratulations! I hope it works well for you!
Excellent review, thanks as always!
Thanks!
This is a great review Curtis! I just purchased the Shure MV7 and I really enjoy it. I noticed that the XLR cable was causing some feedback -- so I picked up a new one and it works perfectly now!
👍 Happy recording! 🎤
Best review so far. So much detail. Thank you.
Thanks Sean.
@@curtisjudd Just got mine yesterday. I use Shure motive software's limiter and fabfilter plugin in logic, then I route it into loopback audio so that my Mac can stream on web. So complicate.
Excellent presentation Curtis.... as usual!
Thanks PianoManChuck. I hope you're staying well!
Finally an actual good review with different voices because i myself don't have that much of a beefy voice and alot of the reviewers do so this was great thank you!
Thanks FRASH!
Great Job as Always Curtis !!
Thanks Blayde!
Top noch review! Got everything i wanted to know about the mic.
👍
I already looked at two reviews and this is the best. Congratulations
Thanks franktntx.
I’m late but thanks for the review! Always so well thought out and honest.
Thanks Tony!
Loved this review!! Thank you.
Thanks Pierre!
Excellent presentation.... Well done Curtis!
Thanks Sheriff!
Thanks for the detailed review.
Thanks Craig, you're welcome!
The review is was looking for. Great!
👍
I bought MV7 yesterday. So excited ❤
Congratulations! Happy recording/streaming! 🎙
Great video, very informative and straight forward.
Thanks Snalle.
Excellent review! Thank you.
Thanks Alex.
Very informative video. Thanks Curtis.
Thank you Mark.
As always. Very brilliant video. 👏
🙏
🙏
Hey Curtis, another great video. I will try one next week. :)
Thanks João. Happy recording!
Thanks Curtis, very thorough as always. I actually bought the MV7 recently and love it. The SM7B sounds a bit warmer and it is more pleasing. However, the MV7 is a great value and excellent for streaming.
👍 happy streaming!
Brilliant review!
🙏
🙏
Great microphone and review Curtis. I am late to this party but glad Shure has a winner for more people needing a great mic.
Thanks Vincent. 🎙
This an amazing product review video. :)
Thanks.
Great review thanks for the efforts
Thanks Willy!
Thank you, Curtis, great review!
I loved the reference about pizza (for those who watch a lot of mic review videos on RUclips).
Cheers! A nod to my friend Bandrew Scott over at Podcastage. 😀
Thanks for the review! I think I’ll purchase this mic to start my youtube channel!
👍
Great job Curtis. Thanks.
Thanks for watching.
Curtis, you are a sound scientist. You are wonderful! 🥇
🙏
Brilliant Curtis! Thank you so much.
Thanks Mal.
Subscribed and liked… epic review
Thanks, Wilmer.
I switched out the wind screen to the one with the SM7B and now my MV7 sounds great
👍
Thank you dear sir for this useful and detailed review. As someone who knows nothing about microphones, and would like to improve audio during Zoom calls, I appreciate your counsel.
👍 Happy Zooming.
Great video!
Thanks!
As always, great detailed review. I just ordered up one to use as an office /zoom/ videoconferencing microphone when on site assignments where I don’t want to have to haul around the mix-pre audio bag to use my xlr mics, but of course can always use this mic with that gear as well. Sorry, I couldn’t use you affiliate links on this purchase, had to be Amazon Prime to ship to the post office in this small northern town in Canada where I am on a long site assignment.
Thanks Trevor, I hope the MV7 works well for you!

Great content sir

Extremely descriptive, discusses a wide range of angles, and alternative methods for different issues of the mic. Fantastic review. First video I’ve seen of this guy, but he seems to have a talent for this.
Yes, Curtis is "the man." He always gives fair, detailed, and credible information. Before I buy any audio gear, I see what he has to say first.
Thanks vgman94!
Thanks Alex!
Yes! I've been wanting to see how your voice is handled by this baby. Glad you got around to it.
Now to watch it...
👍 I think the SM7B is a little sweeter.
@@curtisjudd Maybe, but I like a good crisp sounding tone. I personally think the SM7b is a bit muffled, but then again I'm not a fan of kids like most others. It's where your voice really helps me find mics I like.
@@insanejughead Fair point and personal aural preference is legitimate!
@@curtisjudd Thank you.
Oh, and I meant 'mids', not 'kids', for anyone reading this...
@@insanejughead Hahaha! Ok, that makes a lot more sense!
Awesome review
Thanks Ian
I’ve had this for a while now about 2 months and i bought the sm7b foam cover and put it on the mv7 and i kid you not it sounds identical. Fixed the plosive issue
👍
Oh, that looks really nice! It is too bad about the USB micro and limiter but overall very nice. Great job on the video as usual.
Thanks Scott!
As a hapless victim of the Blue Yeti, I am blown away by the quality of the MV7. Your review also covered all bases and I was very impressed by your professionality while you did not go into needless details (like complex studio measurements which makes no sense in this price class). Also skipping the XLR makes perfect sense as it really makes little sense to buy with this mic and one would only use if you already own it, in which case a SM7B plus cloudlifter for 200 bucks plus audio interface for at least 180 bucks would be the play.
👍🎙️
Just ordered it (through the link, of course). I'm pumped because background noise is a huge factor on Zoom calls with my _Blue Yeti_ right now.
I hope it works well for you Alex!
thanks for the vid mate.
You're welcome!
Thank you for this review. Was able to see that I can use a usb c.
👍
Great Video!
Thanks!
Poor mans SM7B for sure. I’m very interested in this mic since I don’t necessarily want the accompanying gear needed to properly drive the much more expensive SM7B. Thanks for the review Curtis!
You bet, thanks Brendan!
Hey, great videos. I discovered your channel recently and I must say, I love the way you present your videos. Always straight to the point, pros and cons of the products before you even talk about the mics.
Also, very nice intros with motion titles. What plugins do they come from?
Finally, on this particular video I have one comment based on what you say in your introduction. I fully understand you want to show (well, to have listen to) the raw audio of each mic, without post processing. Now that said, once we make our mind on a mic or another, I sometimes feel we may be left with unanswered questions. If I choose for the budget Mic amongst the ones you present in a video, and I clearly understand that the audio is not as good as the more expensive you may suggest (because its response is too bright, too warm, with too much ambient noise, or internal noise), I still wonder if I can accept the compromise by making corrections in post. A budget Mic can be acceptable with some post corrections and make the investments worth, I would imagine?. Again, when the choice is for a budget mic, especially for budget reasons, I would definitely need to know the result in audio quality coming out from post.
For sake of a comparison, listening to the raw audio totally makes sens to me. But once I decide for one model, I need to know its capabilities, without and with post corrections.
I wish you could complete your comparisons with samples of post corrected audio, that would be great.
Anyway, thank you again for all your videos, I have learned way more by watching just your channel, rather than browsing too many different channels, with sometimes opposite or incomplete views.
Thanks Claude, the intro was custom created by a graphic artist. I'm not sure which app he used, but likely after effects. Thanks for the feedback. I struggle with keeping the videos short enough so that I don't get a lot of criticism for making them too long. I have another video showing how to EQ to sweeten the sound in post: ruclips.net/video/Jn6iB1SNvRQ/видео.html as well as several others on the channel covering other post techniques.
Note that some microphones are a bad enough fit for some voices, that recordings can end up with saturation or distortion that CANNOT be removed or fixed in post. This is pretty rare, but does happen.
I'll try to include some samples in future reviews, balancing that with the need to stay concise.
First, Happy New Year Curtis. You've made my media production and podcast life much easier! Much appreciated. I have three questions: 1) any thoughts on after-market shock mounts for the MV7? 2) Was there any difference in the XLR and USB output sound or gain? 3) Just to confirm ... does system audio route back through the on-mic headphone jack so you can hear yourself and your guest(s)? I believe you mentioned "mic vs monitor level adjustment, but just wanted to confirm. Again, thanks for every thing you do for all of us!!!!
1) I don't have an experience with specific after market shock mounts but that would help isolate the mic from desk vibrations. 2) Nothing obvious that I noticed. 3) Yes.
Cool been waiting for your insights about this mic, because im really close in getting an SM7B or the MV7
If you have a good enough XLR interface that can drive a Shure SM7B and you can afford it I don't really see much reason to consider the MV7. For most people any condenser mic like the MV7 is going to pick up way too much background noise and reverb. Unless you're house is quiet as a mouse and acoustically treated your much better off with a Dynamic mic imo, any dynamic mic. SM7B is one of the best ones out there, but may need a Cloudlifter to go with it possibly which adds another $150 to its $400 cost.
A USB much would be good to take on the go with a laptop or if you're just starting out otherwise nah.
@@AnthonyGoodley Thanks for that, but a fethead is already enough for a shure SM7B? cause the price of the cl-1 is just way too much already.
@@AnthonyGoodley The MV7 is a dynamic mic, it doesn't pick up much room noise
@@JStream I believe so but I'm not sure so you should do some research first.
@@JStream From my exerience: No. In this case you are probably much better off with a P48 powered condenser, something like a KMS105. SM7B is not a cheap overall solution - it only shines when combined with higher end preamps. It will work in terms of gain, but the FetHead is not helping with overall sound quality / noise floor from my experience.
You’re on point with the usb c cable.
👍
Fantastic review Curtis. One question...when using with XLR will the Shure 'save' it's settings after it's been unplugged from the app? I run a podcast and we have 4 Shures....but not 4 iphones or laptops! Therefore we record direct with XLR into a Zoom H6 recorder and use the limiter in that...then edit the sound in post on the computer.
Many thanks for your reviews. You've helped me spend literally eye watering sums of money!
I don't think it does because it would need a power source to do that. However, the effects are not that great. The limiter in the H6 is as good as the one in the MV7, which is not very good, so you're not losing anything there. The main things are the EQ and compression. Are you post processing your audio or streaming live?
Superb💜💜🎼🎸
Thanks!
Curtis reviews are so good yet so unfair at the same time, he can make even $1 mic sound amazing.
Ha! Thanks, I think….
Great video
Thanks Haitham!
Very good and useful analysis. Thank you. I hope Shure uses the connector type C next time. I'll be waiting for it.
Thanks Frank.
@@curtisjudd By the way Curtis, what´s your opinion about the Carbon Mackie´s mic? It seems to have a nice and clear sound. In this moment I can´t afford buying the Shure MV7 USB, this will be my next step, but I need now one with good quality around the 100 dolars (I don´t like Blue Yeti, neither Big Foot) for podcast, basic music recordings (I´m a singer songwriter) and to read (to record) text audiobooks. Thank you so much in advise, for your advise.
@@frankpalpieris I haven't used the Mackie, unfortunately.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for answer Curtis. I think I´ll try it. Afterwards, the MV7.
I just got this microphone and while it's not exactly the SMB7 and I don't expect it to last the same as one, for the price it can't be beaten. I've tested many USB microphones and this one is the best sounding by far. As you mention, the limiter is practically useless and the plosives are a thing to look at, but other than that it's a great piece of gear for the money!
Glad its working well for you! 🎙
Like the sound of this
👍
Very impressive review!! You know the difference between sm7b is noticeable but somehow i dont know which one has “better” sound. So i Just bought mv7. For the price 210 usd in my country its really steal with mic this quality
Glad it is working well for you!
Great review I’ve used a blue snowball for about 4-5 years and I was eating to do a upgrade for streaming I was gonna use a goxlr mini and a mv7
Good combo.
Thanx for this review! A call would have made the phone sending. While during watching a video the phone is more on the reciever side.
And another thing - sorry for that: The amount of „background noise“ or room sound that the capsule of a mic pics up depends on the polar pattern and the frequency response, NOT on the type of soundconversion. If a cardioid should reject the sound in a 90 degree angle by 10db, it will do exactly that, no matter if its a dynamic or a condenser mic. 😃👍.
I love your reviews! Not only the well researched info but also the calm and relaxed way of presentation 🍀.
Thanks Klaus. The practical difference in how much room sound a microphone picks up has to do not with the polar pattern so much as the fact that one *usually works closer to a dynamic microphone. This increases the signal to noise ratio. And the reason one generally works closer to a dynamic mic is the lower overall sensitivity.
@@curtisjudd Thanks for your answer. I think I'll do a video on this topic, maybe:-)
when you record the samples, is there any treatment at all in the room? and maybe a stylus would work on the touch surface? also, the mic on a different table is a really good idea. you could probably do a whole course on video and audio for conference calls alone. im guessing its a big market, especially right now. just from observing one person who does 1 or 2 conferences a week, about an hour each...there are a lot of problems that come up with regard to audio and video, mostly audio. anyhow, thanks for another great video!
Thanks Bubba! There was some treatment in the room for these samples, yes. I wanted to do it in another room but ran into some practical scheduling issues.
Is it possible to use both USB and XRL at the same time? For example, if you wanted to record to the computer via the USB, but then also record a backup track to a handheld recorder via XRL.
Yes. Both are active at the same time.
Well done
Thanks, Angelina.
Nice review, Curtis. Seems VERY sensitive to handling noise. Compared to the SM7b, it seems a little more hyped/boxy in the upper mids. SM7B has a smoother mid-scooped sound. Without the comparison though, I don't think I would've thought it was too much. Those app presets are pretty cool.
Agreed on all counts!
Hi Curtis, Love the video ! I was curious what kind of broadcast stand would you suggest for this microphone. Thanks Keep up the good work !
Hi Power of Film, depends on your budget. My favorite is the OC White ProBoom® Ultima® Gen2 Ultra Low Profile Adjustable Mic Boom with a 12” Fixed Horizontal Arm and Machined Table Bushing. Spendy, but really good.
@@curtisjudd not overly concerned about budget, I'll check it out thanks !
Nice review. I thought your voice sounds great on it. I would def buy the SM7b foam windscreen. Interesting that the MV7 (USB mode) and SM7b have inverted waveforms from each other. I noticed this in the samples of your and Emma's quotation samples. I inverted the sections of the MV7 that were "below the line" to "above the line" and the samples looked almost identical. Inverting did not seem to change the sound to my ears.
Interesting find - thanks for pointing that out. That's good to know if we happen to use the two of them for a podcast. Mic bleed could create some interesting issues.
Great review! Thank you! Have you ever connected this mic directly to a camera (I am filming with a LUMIX G9)? I’m curious whether it’s possible, what connectors I will need, and whether it will hurt the sound quality in the finished recording if I do that versus connecting it directly into my computer. I’m worried about the post processing and getting my voice and audio paired up correctly, so if I can avoid that step, I’d love to. Thanks!
There isn’t an output on this mic which will work directly with the G9. You’d need a mixer between them.
great content thank you pro lvl
Thanks Robert.
Thank you for this fantastic review Curtis! For those that are puzzling over Shure's decision to use micro USB - I think I may know why. Take a look at Shure's "MVI" audio interface and take note of the control panel and USB connectivity - it's nearly identical to what you see with the MV7. From what I can see the application used to enhance the MVI experience is the same as what comes with the MV7 as well.
So perhaps they saved some engineering effort by re-using the same panel?
@@curtisjudd This is definitely not my area of expertise so I likely have it all wrong. What I'm meaning to say is I wonder if the MV7 actually has the MVI interface built right in to it. I really like this mic (thanks in no small part to your very helpful review of it) but have gotten hung up on making the purchase due to the price and the Micro USB connection. I started researching XLR mic + USB interface options that have the features I'm interested in and ended up right back with Shure products - the MVI and the MV7X. That combination in my area at least costs more than the MV7. For me it seems that all paths end with the MV7! My original comment was perhaps just my attempt at determining why.
@@DeletedRedactedConfidential It is a really solid microphone. 🎙
Hi, Curtis. Thanks for the review. How does the sound compare with the xlr connected vs the usb connection? Of course depends on the preamp used vs the preamp built inside the mic’s internal audio interface. But with Flat specs on the usb connection and flat via xlr how does it sound? The same? Cheers
Very similar. I didn't notice a big difference with my Universal Audio Apollo x6 which is a pretty decent preamp.
2020 and some manufacturer still opt for Micro USB instead.
Yes. 😞
And they justify this choice with some kind of « consistency in the motiv product range » bullshit 🤣🤣🤣.
Maybe they want real time EQ. Or they cannot afford a preamp. Or they think its easier.
It's 2023... why is this STILL a THING!?
the touch controls are not just you. all reviews so far have had the same issue. what would make this worthwhile for me is that it be used concurrently on xlr and usb. making it possible to livestream and record, or record to 2 sources at the same time. just my .02 and thanks for another great review.
Some people have reported ground loop/buzzing when using both outputs at the same time. Be prepared for that. You may need an isolating tranformer for the XLR output.
@@curtisjudd this is why we gather round you! Haha!
Have not heard about that issue yet from other reviews. Thank you.
Nice review. Question ... could you output from both the USB (into your computer) and the XLR (into a recorder) at the same time? (Creating a backup of your side of the audio while also on a Zoom or SquadCast, etc)?
Yes, but some people have reported ground loop/hiss issues when doing that.
