BTW, I don't think those were "microwave dinners" because microwave ovens weren't that popular back then. Those would have to be cooked in the oven because their base and covers would have been made out of tin.

That is easier to do if you are both Director and Writer like in this case as apposed to being just the writer.
....and make no mistake, it is the SCREENWRITERS, not directors that craft the universe. I get so tired of people crediting Directors for what SCREENWRITER'S do. Screenwriting is WAY more important.
I found out that is VERY MICH an American thing too. In other countries apparently they give credit to screenwriters over directors, as it SHOULD be.
Writers,. not directors come up with the characters, universe and Dialogue. Directors just flesh it out with real world Nouns!

"Testing it", my dad got it up to 160 before losing his nerve... and said it still had pedal left.
A stock-car racer offered to trade my brother his Roadrunner for it.
Between the two of them, my two elder brothers crashed it 3 times. Third time my dad had it totaled, even though it wasn't. He decided it was too much car for them.
*The same brother had a 63 Ford Falcon convertible, powder blue. We of course named it "Snoopy". "Three on the Tree" transmission. I loved that car. Unfortunately, they got rid of it before I was old enough to drive it :(

It's got raisins, you like raisins. This gets said in my house very often...editing to add. The kind of comedy is what it was like in high school in the 80s.

    Classic!
("The Sure Thing" is what I think you are thinking of....)
Epilouge...."Two Dollars" was a "coolness check" in the 80's and beyond. It ranks pretty high in my Cusack ratings. I'm not sure how well it's aged...."Ha Ha ! Teenage suicide"...One might call it a dark comedy. "Say Anything" is #1 and I might put this at #2. It was right in my early teen wheel house. "Heathers" (not Cusack related) is another dark comedy gem from the 80's that again...probably hasn't aged so well.
Lastly it breaks my heart as a Gen Xer that you were not familiar with Van Halen's "Everybody Wants Some"....8^p

It's dark/black comedy, teen comedy and silly/Airplane! type of humor thrown into one movie. Truly unique. I saw one video where the original script was much darker, but it was toned down by the final draft.

One of the saddest parts is that all of the younger people that have watched this have missed the Howard Cosell play-by-play expertly and hilariously done by the Asian drivers. They even have the Wide World of Sports jackets (Cosell used to announce that in addition to boxing and of course, his MNF NFL duties on ABC). This is one of those movies that I can recite word-for-word and I still do the 4 weeks, 20 papers, $2. It kills me every time!

Yeah, this is surrealist humor. Everything around Lane reflects his emotional state as a teenage male who's been dumped by a girl he imagined was the love of his life despite clearly being not a great partner.

You should do the entire Cusack Continuum. From The Sure Thing, BoD, One Crazy Summer, Hot Pursuit, Say Anything, to Grosse Point Blank, Pushing Tin, to High Fidelity, takes you from HS to mid to late 30s. Basically the same character, different names.

I don't know anyone who's heard of it or seen it, but it's one of my favorites. I find it crazy that no one really talks about it, because it has a star-studded cast. John Cusack, Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, Stanley Tucci, and Christopher Walken to name just a few.
