We have passages in the New Testament that reaffirm homosexuality as a sin, while the ceremonial Mosaic law is put to rest as fulfilled. This really isn't that hard of an argument to debunk. Thanks Trent.

When Jesus says that what you eat does not defile you, but the things that defile come from the heart, which includes adultery and unchastity among other things. Sodomy would've universally been understood in a Jewish context as being included in that. If Jesus wanted to revise that teaching he would've said so, but just for good measure St. Paul had to reiterate that teaching when preaching to the gentiles.

I have a habit of blaming Protestantism for every single thing wrong with Christianity, but I think its culpability in the case of sexuality is OBVIOUS. Whoever thinks sex, as commonly understood, is a beautiful gift to be enjoyed between a married man and his wife has SORELY misunderstood Catholic teaching. If you're doing anything in the bedroom that could be considered "fun" then you probably need to go to Confession. Unless the angels and saints, the Blessed Virgin and YOUR VERY OWN MOTHER could watch what transpires in your marital bed in complete joyful approval, then YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. Nowhere, ever, were we given marriage as an acceptable outlet for lust or pride or sloth or gluttony or greed or envy (or even wrath for the S & M weirdos). As a society, we no longer see marriage as an inferior spiritual state. I even heard one young lady ask a priest how he handles being deprived of the ability to express love! In other words, our culture has become so perverted that we equate sex with love. And because we've made an idol out of sex, we unfairly scapegoat gays and force them to shoulder the guilt of all of our disordered sexuality. My goodness, shame on us! Lust between two humans is equally disgusting, whether it's man and wife or boyfriend and boyfriend. And it's so easy to see where Protestantism followed Martin Luther's lead on this...look at their pastors, scarfing down their big lush meals, bought with their six figure salaries, and carrying on their flesh-fest to the bedroom, knocking up their baby-factory wives, and writing sermons about it (and if you think I'm being melodramatic here, Luther was not shy writing about his "private" life with Katie von Bora, former nun)

@@signumcrucis4172If you are celibate you aren't homosexual. Maybe I'm just being pedantic, but in Catholicism it's not possible to identify with a sin. E.g: If I like to eat it's fine, I won't be a glutton until I actually go and overeat. Similarly, I can't be an alcoholic if I never drank alcohol, even if my genes would somehow guarantee I would be if I drank.
If we were our inclinations then we're doomed. I'd be a murderer, fornicator, verbal abuser, glutton, etc. just because of having an intrusive thought for these at least once. But all praise to God, who didn't make it so.
Edit: Example failed. I was an actual fornicator before my conversion. God have mercy.
But let's use my misshap for expanding this. I said I "was" a fornicator, meaning I left it behind. A homosexual/sodomite could likewise stop being homosexual.
On another note, please pray for me.

Matthew 19:4-6 clearly states the view that Jesus has on marriage. Marriage is unequivocally outlined as a sacred union between a man and a woman as by God’s design. Jesus also tells us after a few verses that if we don’t marry then we should be like eunuchs, that is not have sexual relationships. Therefore, if same-sex marriage cannot happen and we shall not have sexual relationships outside of marriage, I don’t see how some people seem to think that Jesus thought is was ok to have homosexual relationships instead. That being said Jesus also saved an adulterous woman from execution, claiming that no one is without sin. While it is unambiguous that homosexuality is a sin for Christianity, we are also taught to love one another and even to love our enemies as ourselves. We shouldn’t be hostile towards other sinners as we ourselves aren’t perfect.

That being said I don’t think homosexuality is the be-all end-all of sins. People who overly fixate on homosexuality as something sinful in my experience do so in bad faith. It’s good to stand on solid ground against the cultural shift that is happening to avoid blurring the lines between good and evil, but we also must be careful not to be overly reactionary and end up mistreating other people as a result. We shouldn’t judge each other for sinning but help each other to get out of sin with tact and empathy.

@@femaleKCRoyalsFan ok but what does Jesus teach us with most of his parables regarding sin? Look at the prodigal son or the lost sheep or the workers in the vineyard. Instead of casting judgment on other people which we should never do, we should *help* other people be reconciled with God and be glad if they do. I see a lot of people instead cast judgment on others and use that as an excuse to congratulate (even implicitly) themselves. If I say "gay people are terrible sinners" implicitly by not being gay in my mind I'm not a sinner anymore, or my sins can be excused because there are "worse" sins out there. That's not the point of Christianity, we are *all* children of God and if we see a brother or sister fall into sin we should help them, not judge them. And we shouldn't congratulate ourselves for our "righteousness" while judging those who we deem unrighteous, see Luke 18:10-14 the man justified before God isn't the one congratulating and exhalting himself for his good deeds but the one who humbles himself.

@@covonedigrano7491I agree, as sinners ourselves, we must seek forgiveness and pray for others to seek Jesus. Love in the bare sense is to care for another without force. We have to inform them the sins of homosexuality or really anything LGBT+ and pray they seek the light, the ball would be on their court to accept God's Love (Caritas Dei) or not.
The sad reality is many don't even want to hear religious beliefs, so they must be informed in other ways, like science or they must ask themselves why things are made in the way they are.

Therefore, you need to advocate for the death penalty?

    • @DragonKing101
      @DragonKing101 9 месяцев назад

No, it doesn't mean that Christians should be advocating the death penalty; or at least, it depends on which framework you're using.
One such framework that gets around that is the belief that Christians themselves aren't taught to enforce Judicial laws. Christians, in general, are citizens, thus, they've no say in legal matters. As citizens, what's the Biblical framework for treating other people? Loving and praying for them, even enemies. You can't do that while simultaneously trying to chant their deaths. Thus, in this framework, Christians aren't supposed to be advocating for the death penalty.
Another framework that doesn't imply they should be advocating for it (If they live in some general country) is the belief that the death penalty in the OT law *only* applies to ancient Israel, as to get to the death penalty, it has to be under accordance with their legal system, i.e. judges and elders and the overall procedure with them. This video explains this framework pretty well: The Sabbath and the Death Penalty by David Wilber.
Both frameworks are entirely consistent with what Trent is saying in this video. (You may not find those frameworks to be sound, which is fair, but all that's needed is having a logically valid framework that one can use that doesn't have that implication).

Neither of your frameworks resolve this, its just flat out disobedience against Christ. jesus also says "If you love me, follow my commands" so seperating from your wife or husband, regardless of cause, basically makes you non christian as you have disobeyed him, which means you dont love him by his own words
Either way, you certainly don't see Christians marching in the streets against Divorce. And even if we ignore legal divorce. Each christian in their own lives, countless of them still divorce and seperate. Which isnt a legal issue but an interpersonal choice they make themselves

Yes, neither of my frameworks resolves such an issue. That is because my framework doesn't attempt to answer it. My framework only is answering that you can work in certain models that do not imply Christians should be advocating for the death penalty on these people on Theological grounds, even *if* said Christians believe this law in the Law of Moses still applies to Christians.
To summarize: My point is that there *are* frameworks you can work with that involve someone appealing to the law in certain places on what people aren't to do, even if said Christians don't believe they can legally enforce such a rule, but it doesn't follow from that that they should also be advocating for the punishment as well.
Of course, these frameworks may be handwavy to you on someone saying that all the statements in each respective one are indeed true, which again, I think is fair. I'm just saying there are some valid (?) frameworks that some Christians work with that get around the implication.
As for the rest, yeah, I agree that it is problematic behavior when a lot of these Christians do things while at the same time telling others not to do those same things.

I think that we should realize that the Torah or Old Testament does not make the distinction between moral, civil and ceremonial laws, This is a distinction made by Christian interpreters since late patristic times. I once asked a rabbi about this and his answer was all of the Torah is equally binding. By the way the Jews also believe that only Jews and not Gentiles are bound by the laws of the Pentateuch. Gentiles are to follow the 7 Laws of Noah.
As for the Mosaic Law I think a statement by the biblical scholar Theophile Meek is pertinent: The Hebrew Torah is not one consistent whole, the creation of a single legislator, Moses, or anyone else. Law comes into existence slowly to meet the changing needs of the times and this is evident in the Torah. Scholars recognize several codes , such as the Deuteronomic, the Holiness and the Priestly codes.
The usage of stoning people to death would be regarded by most people as barbaric, outdated and unjust. All you have to do is look at the hideous cruelty involved is to watch these punishments meted out by Al Qaeda, the Taliban and Isis. Are we to advocate the punishments of Deuteronomy 13 for unbelief, Leviticus 25 for slavery, the death penalty for witchcraft, necromancy, sabbath violation, juvenile delinquency, adultery, idolatry, homosexuality? To ask the question is to answer the question these are laws of an ancient, semi-nomadic tribe and are inapplicable to any modern democracy. Another thing to note all of us treasure our natural and human rights to life, liberty, and property and the concept of rights was unknown to the biblical writers. They only recognized rules to be followed.
Christian moral ideas may transcend sociological and scientific fact, but they are not independent of such data, and moral ideas may well have to be modified to bring them into relation with new discoveries. The development of the social sciences on mainly secular lines does not invalidate their usefulness for the Christian ethicist and theologian. When the Christian attitude to homosexuality was formed no accurate information was availableas to its extent and virtually nothing was known of its causes.

Also a quotation from Sigmund Freud in his letter to an American mother in 1935 is pertinent:
Homosexuality is assuredly no advantage, but it is nothing to be ashamed of, no vice, no degredation. It cannot be classified as a mental illness; we consider it to be a variation of the sexual impulse, produced by a certain arrest of sexual development. . . It is a great injustice to persecute homosexuality as a crime and cruelty too. A view is often advanced that homosexuality is depavity. This is used as a vehicle of abuse but has little scientific meaning. It has been suggested that the ancient Romans became degenerate and lost world dominance through perverted sex or alternatively that homosexuality was a symptom of their degeneration but it is now believed that Rome's decline was due to political, economic and public health causes.

    1) God never destroyed any nations for "eating shellfish". Nations were destroyed for homosexuality (lev 18).
    2) As beastiality and incest are listed as the things God destroyed nations for in lev 18, are those who claim that jesus had no problem with homosexual acts also claiming that jesus had no problem with men sleeping with their mothers and animals? If christians are not allowed to say homosexual acts are sinful, then that would also have to apply to incest and beastiality.

for example. i like how people go to the shellfish over not eating pigs. because they know pigs in that time and area have very nasty ring worms so of course you want to avoid eating them. same with shellfish. at that time eating them could result in nasty food poisoning or even death due to the inability to cook them properly.
mixing crops on a field could result on the crops failing and mixing fabrics could result in rashes

God wanted his people to live long and healthy lives so if they didn't obey there was no punishment because he was trying to help them avoid something bad from happening and if they disobeyed God didn't list a punishment for disobeying these things already came with risks that if one does their research will understand why he told the to not do it

Fornication is obviously defined as sexual activity outside of heterosexual marriage which is condemned by both Jesus and Paul. Critics utilize "argument from ignorance" to the extreme here. The burden of proof is on both sides. If homosexuality is not a sin, it must, therefore, be a virtue. Critics must prove with Biblical evidence that homosexuality was ever a virtue.

I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. So I want to remind you, though you already know these things, that Jesus first rescued the nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did not remain faithful. And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment. And don’t forget Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and serve as a warning of the eternal fire of God’s judgment.” Jude‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭7‬

    9. Will you accept our Father’s truth in reference to marriage❓

The millennium is the end of the cycle of the end of sin.
Man had a thousand years curse the day Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
A day is like a thousand years.
The oldest man was Methuselah, he lived 969 years, and the last Adam lived 30 years as the Son of man, a human- Jesus Christ, then He was filled with the Holy Spirit, to become the Son of God 100%God and 100% man, just like the first Adam, who was created flesh and God breathed into his nostrils, to have 100% God in 100% man.
Thus, when the mystery of iniquity is dealt with, after the 70th week year of Israel, then the whole world will be destroyed at the second coming of Jesus Christ. This will usher in the kingdom of God, for which Jesus Christ came to preach to Israel, before the gospel of grace- for both Israel and the gentiles, because they rejected their King. The scriptures are going back in cycles, we're now in Genesis 6, 11 and 47.It is like going back to the garden of Eden Isaiah 65; Genesis 5, when man will have to live out the whole 1000 years curse, which ends the wages of sin- death, which ends the cycle of creation, until the new heavens and the new earth is established, where there's no more sin and death. Then the judgment and rewards, abd the institution of mandatory pilgrimage to the New Jerusalem, and then, the Sabbath will be observed, signifying the end of work of both Creation and Redemption of the lost soul of man. Isaiah 66.
Every nation will worship God, because there will no longer be evil or Satan present. All have been judged and cast into the lake of fire and brimstone- including death, hell, satan, the antichrist and his false prophets and those that bare his mark.
The world will be as God in tended it right from the beginning, after the old earth and the heavens are completely destroyed by fire.
    2 Peter 2:10-13;
    Isaiah 65:17; 66:,15-16, 22; 30:30;9:5
    1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Joel 2:10;; Nahum 1:5; Zephaniah 1:15-28; 3:8: Ezekiel 32:7-9; Revelation 20:1; Revelation 20:9-11, etc.

Actually, God is not dealing with the world on a personal level at this time, but He has made a way for anyone who seeks Him to gain access into fellowship with Him by grace, through faith in the sacrificial death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, His only Begotten Son, our Lord and Savior.
Just because a person is touted as a pastor of a church, doesn't mean he/she has this access to God.
How can they dishonor the very very God they purport to represent except they're lying. There's a proverb that says no two people can be deceived- the only person doing the deception is the only one being deceived, just like a blind man who states that he couldn't see only because he has his eyes shut. He wouldn't even see if he had them open. Those deriving some sort of elation from dishonoring the name of God in Christ Jesus, are actually themselves deceived, and they love it so.
God fights His own battles. He says "vengeance is mine, and I will repay " - oh, how He does repay! Unfortunately, they would have forgotten how they got the repayment, so they thump their noses at God in absolute defiance, blaming God for their own actions and their consequences.
Actually, these people are the very ones who seek God in private but think that He wouldn't receive them, thus, they dig deeper into their mischief shamefacedly, rather than be humble and go to God in repentance.
They hurt so much when they're alone and their audience are no where to be found. They pretty up and face them boldfacedly, but hiding their shame and regrets.
Fortunately, the door to salvation of their souls is still open.
Salvation is for them who are tired of living a double life- the one they show to the people around them in order to be cool and accepted, and the real one they're hiding, hoping no one but the Holy Spirit would see.
He does see, and is making this last call.
Whosoever has ear to hear, let him hear and heed this call. They will not have any excuses on that day, for this will be brought to their remembrance, and God, in Christ Jesus will judge righteously and mete out pertinent punishment or rewards.
They can't mess with other religions and idols because they are merciless. They get their followers to fight for them, even kill for them, and even kill themselves in order to be rewarded by them, but these idols don't mess with God or His Anointed people. (But God got His Own Son to die so that anyone who believes in Him should not perish!). Unfortunately, all who are mocking Him and refuse this great work of redemption of their souls, will have to go through everything Jesus Christ went through for them by His cursed death on the cross of Calvary, even more, in order to pay for their sins and mockery of His great grace. Job 14:20-22; 20:11; 21:26, 32; 30:23:24; Psalm 49:14; Isaiah 66:24.
    Revelation 19.
    But Believers in Christ- Luke 9:27; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-58; Psalm 49:15; 16:10-11; Isaiah 26:19; Matthew 26:51-53; John 8:51; Ephesians 2:6;1:6 etc.
These demons and devils and gods actually tremble at the mention of the name of Jesus Christ, the name that has been highly exalted above all names in the heaven, on the earth and under the earth!
Everyone has a choice to make, but remember that those who are laughing with you at this time as you blaspheme the name that bought you, will definitely laugh at you on that day if they make a wise choice now! We're still in the acceptable year of the Lord but it's fast closing, the day of vengeance of our God is getting started as we see the signs Luke 4:17-19; Isaiah 61:2; 63:4.
Jesus Christ is Lord of and over all! Amen!

Actually, Latin was once extremely common in the academic world. I think that Latin was chosen as the language of the Church because of its widespread use among scholars at the time, not to set Catholics apart from non-believers.

God provided the Jews with laws that set them apart form the rest of the world/society, and Christ set His Church apart from the rest of the world/society and that shouts loudly against any anyone attempting to blend the Church into the world/society. James Martin is wrong.

I do not believe Moses received the 603 laws from God. I think the Pharisees added that claim. Here is why...Jesus said the whole law could be summed up in 2 commandments which are loving God and loving fellow man.
Now apply that as you read a list of the Moses law. Makes no sense God told moses to stick around Moses to "stay and listen to the rest" after the 10 and then went "ok you can beat the slaves a little bit but not so hard they cant get up in 3 days, be kind to the stranger in your land, do not sell a beautiful woman, oh yes yes and make sure you build a parapet on the roof, oh and yes we need a few specific shekel fine amounts for these rules, and um definitely need to add that if your house is in a walled city it has to be redeemed in a year. Moses...Moses are you getting all this? Ok moving on, tell the people also that uh if you find a murdered body in the wild that they should sacrifice a cow by a river."
I say the only list that makes sense is that which fits in the idea of loving God, meaning how to love and worship the true God and each other. If you love your wife you wont cheat or anything. If you love God you wouldnt ignore Him.
Jesus did say he comes not to destroy the law but the use of the word law seems to be different in different places. Did Jesus mean the 10 commandments, the 6 he mentions, or 613 including never ever freeing a Canaanite slave for life and passing them down to family until they die.

I have done a lot of reading of Jewish commentaries. First, the prohibition of mixing cloths was to prohibit a profane use of a mixture of cloths that was used in the wilderness temple, hence it was sacred. ( Fr Martin mocks this divine command.) Second, there is a prohibition of using a certain compound of incense that you guessed it already was used in the wilderness temple, hence it was sacred and thus set aside. And, the big punchline about not eating pork and other such commands that don't make sense is that they have been commanded by God. So, it doesn't matter if a command makes sense to us or not. There's a command for a man to be put to death if he does not honor his father and mother :: obviously this command like others was to have a deterrant effect, there is no record of this command ever being carried out, or the water torture test of a woman's marital fidelity.
A large number of the Torah commands have to do directly with the temple, and so do not even apply to modern Jews, much less to non-Jews, except in their power to persuade us to respect the sacred.
A better argument that Fr Martin could make about Leviticus is that the Sinai covenant was only made with the Jews. Today, Jews are of the opinion that Gentiles like us are not enjoined to those commandments at all, but only to the Noahide covenant. Even St Paul makes the case that if a man is circumcised he becomes liable for adherence to all those commands of the Sinai covenant. He is not just making that up out of thin air. So, at the very least, he was using the Noahide argument as a case for Christians to not be circumcised, because the Sinai covenant had run its course, been fulfilled in Christ, and we were thereafter under the new covenant or testament.

Maybe make a video about heterosexuals who are permitted to have sexual relationships, yet they choose to divorce and get remarried, or who have recreational sex before marriage and not for the purposes of procreation. If these people are not equally criticised and demonised then there are a lot of double standards, hypocrisy and unjustified prejudice.

How is Fr. Martin allowed to speak publicly about this subject? His Bishop should give him a stern warning to stop speaking about this unless reading verbatim the teaching from the Catechism/Canon Law. He needs to be made an example of. I don't think he should have his priesthood taken away, as long as he agrees to not speak on homosexually in a way that is against Church teaching. If he refuses, he should be stripped of his priestly duties.

Fr. Martin gets away with a lot because of what he doesn't say explicitly. For example, when he says he asks people if they follow other aspects of Mosaic law when they bring up OT teaching on homosexuality, he is clearly implying that he believes in the very least that the OT teaching on this could be wrong. He doesn't have to specifically state that he thinks sodomy is okay to be in the wrong about this. We are all called to be witnesses to the Faith (You shall not bear false witness). He is being a false witness by bringing up what Trent calls the Shellfish Argument.@@signumcrucis4172
