Thanks for the video. I just put my hitch on and luckily my '06 Matrix hasn't been driven on salt covered roads for years, so the bolts went right in. I used a 2x4 block to hold up one side so I could install it by myself. Cheers!
I installed one my 2013 Matrix & just needed the metric tap & wire brush to clean the holes. A friend has an 08 Matrix & wants me to help him install one on his. Hopefully it'll go smooth as well.
I want to get rid of the donut spare tire and use that cavity for camping stuff. To that end, I wanted to get a swing out hitch tire carrier - then realized my car does have a hitch!! So, yes, your video is STILL helpful! Thanks!
I'm thinking about doing this to my 2007 Matrix. I'm impressed at your hacking abilities with those rusted holes. I sure hope that I have better luck. I live in the suburbs, so it shouldn't be that bad. Thanks for your video!
It was a big deal to get those holes clean for the hitch. We have lots of salt on the roads around my place and that has gotten in there over the years. If you are not in those conditions you will have a much better time.
Haha yes it sure makes a difference when the hitch is off by 2". Nothing lines up at that point. That is what I get for not taking the time to look under there.
Just curious, with all the materials and things that you transport, why didn’t you choose to get a pickup truck? It seems like it’d be easier to drive in the mountain area and you would have a flatbed to put mulch or wood or tools in.
It would be great to have a truck. I joke with a guy at the lumber yard about that. The hatchback has been so wonderful though. Plastic bed when the seats are down and roof rack. It has been enough to build an entire 16x20 shop.
Be careful towing with the Matrix. It has a 1500 lbs max towing capacity. You should not go over 80% of that, 1380 lbs. With a 700 lbs ATV that leaves only 680 lbs for the trailer.
Very good advice. The atv is around 650 dry weight. So 700 is a good estimate. I mostly want to haul things like Mulch and stumps. The ATV will be only a couple times a year. Because we have such high hills in this area I should also consider that strain on the vehicle.
Looks like it's been a little over two years and your video is still helping people out

That's good news! My area is known for road salt and that has rusted my car a lot. Hopefully the 08 install is smooth.

Thanks for the help, the wire brush trick worked like a charm.

Thanks for this switching out it on my 06 matrix and putting it on a new 09 matrix wish me luck
Great video.. I just bought a used hitch receiver .. what bolt size am I looking to buy
Did you ever find a quick wiring install kit for the trailer lights?
BTW, thanks for posting your video!
Stay well, my new friend!
Thanks for making this video! We have a 2005 and might just get someone else to do it 😛
My hitch kit came with 1/2 in bolts with fine thread. Turns out I needed 7/16 in bolts.
I think Emma is having fun.
She seems to be having a good time. Sometimes its hard to tell if she is just board or loving the time.
Well no one else said it, but Toyotas are metric and you used a SAE tap. Also pd blaster and a steel wire brush would have worked
I was pleading at you out loud when I saw your misplacement. “WAIT! Look first!”

So did you ONLY used WD-40? I am in the same situation on my 2003 Pontiac Vibe. I am not getting good help.
Good job
Did you get the wiring adapter for the trailer lights?
Not yet. I did watch a video on how that is installed. I will have to look into that soon.
