I had a P0171 in my 2005 Corolla I recently bought for my teenager. 183k miles and no maintenance history but fairly good deal. Hesitation when takin off and when accelerating and very high fuel trims with bad gas mileage (20 mpg) Ended up doing all sorts of things attempting to fix it. Watched tons of videos and even took it to mechanic to diagnose. Cleaned MAF sensor, “TESTED” MAF sensor using the unplug while idling method and car shut off so I concluded MAF was good, replaced PCV valve, air filter (very dirty), oil and filter and changed spark plugs…no change. Took it to mechanic $100 diagnostic fee who quoted me $2100 to replace the breather hose ($220 ) cat converter (1300+) and induction service all of which I declined. 2nd mechanic recommended replacing intake manifold gasket….I started working on it myself…bought cheap OBDII scanner and cleared codes after each intervention then tested. I replaced intake manifold gasket, throttle body gasket, Removed and cleaned fuel injectors using popular DIY method (9v battery and can of throttle body cleaner, replaced intake hose, breather hose, new ignition coils (just because), ordered BG 44k Platinum fuel system cleaner and used EPR, MOA in crank case, new oil and filter of course finally replaced fuel pump…to my dismay, no change. I watched this a figured what the heck I guess I’ll try a new MAF for $40 from 1A Auto…. Fixed it. No more codes, normal fuel trims, drives very well. So the “unplug the MAF and engine shuts off” test commonly seen on RUclips is NOT full proof. Hopefully this helps someone! I’m no mechanic but I learned quite a bit and actually enjoyed working on this car. Now to change transmission and other fluids.

My 05 matrix won’t die. Over 315,000 miles and still going strong (odometer stopped at 299,999). Tons of gravel road use, and I’ve drove it from Kansas to Washington six times. I’ve clipped three deer in it going moderate speeds and still is chugging along. I use it as my main fishing vehicle as it easily transports two labradors retrievers, 18 gallon tote for lures, 55 quart cooler, deflated float tube, waders, and 4 fishing rods sticking out the passenger rear window. All seats are laid over and pads laid out for the dogs. I’m 6’3” and the only thing I have to remove for me to car camp is my fishing rods. A totally practical vehicle for outdoor pursuits, just have to watch the ground clearance. I’ve put 10,000 miles on it fishing spring of 2020 just so you get the picture of the abuse it’s put through.

Dang thats awesome, always wanted a matrix and thanks for sharing how amazing your car is and for lasting that long. I may have to sell my 07 outback or possible trade for a matrix. Its amazing to hear what this car is capable of. My outback is alright but I'm not fond of how the motor is built, its complicated. I do enjoy fishing too and use my outback for that purpose. 👊

Over 330,000 miles on my 03 matrix (also stopped at 299,999 ) and I'm debating if I should fix the window falling problem. I've gone so long with out being able to roll down the passenger window because of this issue. How exactly much longer do you think the car will last ? I rather not throw much money into it with so many miles.

Great cars IMHO. Nice tip about tightening the window screws. I have 06 Vibe with same engine 93k miles. I noticed a loss of power and gas mileage. I found the intake manifold gasket was leaking. About $10 and 1 hour to fix. Gained 5 mpg and power return after fix. Also had a small leak in valve cover gasket letting a bit of oil seep down to spark plug, again about $10 and 1 hour. Worst thing I've had was replacing tensioner pulley. A bit more $$$ and work but still doable for a DIYer. These rides are pretty easy to work on even for a noob like me, super reliable and run forever. Love mine.

I have a 2004 model matrix that I bought from a private owner 10 years ago. My car is 21 years old, as I go by the date of sale from the original owner. I have not had any of these problems thank the Lord and I am the second owner. I’ve had this car 10 years. It has 133,000 miles. I love my Marty matrix the Lord bless me with this beautiful automobile ! I do need shocks and struts. I also need my door lock actuator replaced. Honestly none of those are big ticket items and Marty has been great to me. I love my matrix.❤❤

My vibe is at 325k and runs perfectly on the original engine and trans. I’m the only person that works on it. Wife is jealous of the car. Says I think about it more than us! I use it now just to drive from GA to Ohio to visit my son. I won’t hesitate to put 1,200 miles on it once a month over a long weekend. I leave the new 2018 Honda CRV and 2021 Toyota Tacoma at home. When the Honda is in the shop we have a standby that ALWAYS runs. It shows that proper care will keep it going nearly forever. I see making it to 500k easy.

I inherited my father's 2007 Vibe when he passed in 2017 (RIP Pops), it was his second one after he got t-boned in the first. He chose well and its been an awesome vehicle thus far, tonnes of capacity, great mileage, reliable, the little Kenwood/Monsoon stereo system rocks enough I don't need more, it gets regular oil changes and thats been about it so far (other that brakes etc.). The engine light just appeared for the first time so I'll get somebody to read the code, but the running doesn't seem abnormal and I'm hoping its something simple like a new air-filter or MAF or O2sensor. I'll disconnect the battery for a bit and reset the brains first and see if it persists. Thanks for the video and to the other commentators for their input, really good cars imho :)

I have an 2005 Toyota Matrix as well with just over 200,000 miles. Good reliable commuter vehicle like you said. Just have one quick question regarding rust and paint fading. Just curious if your roof is starting or has already started to rust like mine along with the paint peeling on the hood like mine. Have been researching this and supposedly in Toyota blogs I have been reading through the 2000s model Toyota cars were not equipped with the proper rust/oxidation prevention coat when originally manufactured. This problem has not only occurred in the matrix models also other 2000s Toyota models. While searching this on google I’ve noticed I’m not the only one that this has happened to especially on Toyota Matrix models like ours. Hopefully this issue/defect has not occurred on your car. If so just curious as to how you went about repairing/fixing it. Been researching and trying to find a low cost method to fix my car. Any input/info you can offer is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the vid. I own a 2008 Pontiac Vibe with 240K miles. Bought new, oil every 3k, religiously. Never had a spark plug out. Only issues were recalled air bag and computer module. I replaced a heater door actuator and an intermediate exhaust pipe. Most trouble free car for me, ever. No Wisconsin rust and the engine runs and sounds like new. Never used a drop of oil and the oil looks almost new at the 3K oil changes. Normal brakes and tire replacement.

You should replace the plugs with denso iridiums, the gap is increased at this mileage and it puts a lot of strain on the coils to jump the larger gap. Additionally, the plugs can sieze up in the head if left too long (make sure you change them on an ice cold engine, to avoid damaging alum threads in head).

The window regulators/weather stripping are a big one too. I've had to replace them on both my mother's 2003 Toyota matrix's as well as my recently obtained 2005.
The window regulator will eventually guide the window up out of place and fold/wedge the weather stripping out of place destroying it and the regulator. These often need replaced I've noticed.

My family had a 07 matrix and nothing had gone bad with it or broken down on us besides our muffler getting a bit lose. One day in 2019 we where driving north on a highway, going about 110km (about 70mh) and the hood latch just snapped, middle of the highway the hood came flying up at us and destroyed the windshield and dented the frame. No one was harmed. The car was towed and was deemed totalled. Now 4 years later im 17 with my G2 and im looking for a Camry, Corolla and hopefully a Matrix.

Had most of those and a few serious issues with my ‘05 AWD.
The rear VSC went out a about 90k miles and the unit was over $4500 to replace. No way I was going to pay for that. I ended up cutting out the rear drivetrain and JB welding the yoke on the output shaft. It’s got 200k miles on it now, and the repair has held up so far.
Also, the airbag system on mine is temperamental. Replaced $1400 worth of parts and harnesses and it still acts up.
I’m sure the FWD models are fine, but I’d stay away from the AWD version.

You're right about the mass airflow sensor. My Matrix had less than 60,000 on it when I had problems with it. I tried to clean it with the MAS cleaner but like you
said it was too dirty. They are really easy to take out and replace. You have to trade in your old one for the new one plus about $70. The car will run really rough and
I think the check engine light or something came on when it went bad. It was a long time ago.
Another problem of course is the passenger side airbag recall. The first recall they replace it with the same bad airbag and then sent out letters a few years later
to replace that one. I had a real hastle trying to get the dealerships to get the correct parts and do the job. I finally got it done and what a relief.

I had a 2007 Pontiac Vibe and was so impressed by its performance and dependably! Mechanically it’s the same as the Matrix. The exterior is the only difference between the two. I’m looking to buy a new one because they run forever! I know someone that has got one that has well over 200,000 miles on it and it is still running strong! My only other choice is a Honda C-rv. It’s known for its dependability as well. But that’s it. I don’t want anything else.

2003 Matrix automatic that I'm still driving. I love this car and hope it lasts me until I no longer need a car. :D The only thing I HATE is that they didn't carpet the floor of the hatchback. I put a big rummer mat over is to stop gear from sliding around. In 20 years I have replaced the battery, muffler, starter motor, and various gaskets. My cousin owns the garage I take it to and he says if everyone bought a Matrix, he'd be in the poorhouse.

I have over 201.000 miles on my Toyota 2007 Matrix. Have not had any of this issues with my car yet.
Thanks for the information and help on how to deal with these issues.
However, changed my up and down stream O2 sensors, outlet manifold, water pump, thermostat, alternator, drive belt and tension er. Wow, to replace that drive belt tension er you have to disconnect that front right motor mount jacking up the engine by 4 or more inches. That bottom alternator bolt is hard to remove. Don't strip that bolt. Pay attention to the torque specks on those 6 water pump bolts they are not all the same.
Maintenance, maintenance, and maintenance is the key to keeping your Toyota Matrix running for a long time. Get a OBD 2 reader and it will tell you what your problem(s) are when the check engine light comes on.
It is like the Air Force B 52s. They are from 1955 and still in the air. It is maintenance. The only original part of that plane may be the original tag on the frame. Everything else has been removed and replaced maybe several times or more. It has been flying for nearly 67 years.

I also have a 2008 Matrix, mine is a base model with 5 speed manual. Runs great, I'm very happy with it. I proactively changed the intake gasket to the red one. I got the dealer to order the part in for $12 CAD and then I installed it myself following a RUclips video. I also cleaned my MAF sensor with MAF Sensor Cleaner spray, and the only other thing I did was get Toyota the dealer to replace my airbag(s) under recall. It's good to take advantage of free service under recalls now since they are only valid for 15 years and our cars are 13 years old.

I love the Matrix! I have an '06 that I bought for $700 two year ago; the price was cheap because it wouldn't run (blown head gasket). I spent about $300 on parts doing the head gasket (all the gaskets and seals I could, plus rod bearings and everything else I touched during the job); the head had to be milled 10 thou, but the block didn't warp (aluminum block...I was afraid it would have warped, but it didn't). So my Matrix has a milled head, haha!
The reason the head gasket blew in the first place was because apparently some mechanic forgot to plug in the fan electrical connector and it overheated. It was sitting for almost a year before I bought it.
She now has 215k miles (20k miles since the rebuild) and is going strong! I recently drove her on a 3000 mile road trip, and had no issues at all. I wouldn't think twice about driving that Matrix from Maine to Los Angeles. Just keep up on oil changes and fluids, and they are great vehicles.
The one item I'd add to your list is the exhaust pipe at the muffler flange always rusts out on these and the Vibe and so you have to replace a piece of pipe from the resonator to that flange. Oh yeah, and the digital clock on the dash is hit or miss (bad soldering on some resistors inside). That's about it!

Great Car. I have 260,000 miles on my 2006 Toyota Matrix XR. So far its been mostly tires and brakes, oil changes and oil filters, air filters. I changed the plugs once. Replaced the starter once. Replaced the battery a couple of times. I have had this car now for 14 years. It has the original engine and the original transmission, which, I think are holding up better than the body parts. A few body parts have just worn out and fallen off such as inner fenders, trim below the doors,. trim on the back end, the letters. I may have the motor mount issue because it is making some noise. But it is still getting 30 miles to the gallon, like the day I bought it. I wish I could buy another one.

The intake gaskets and manifolds are bad for leaking in cold weather throwing a p0171 code, as well as the timing chain tensioner o-rings fail causing an oil leak that makes the passenger side back of the engine and ps pump. Just a few common problems with the 1zzfe platform :)

I have a 2006 Matrix XR, auto. Love it. Here are two downsides. I live in LA so when the temperature gets above 95, the AC starts to lose the battle. I have an excellent mechanic, we keep the ac charged up. Done everything we can to get the max AC but I just accept that the 06 model, the ac they use is just not that strong. Guy I know has an 09 Matrix but his ac is cold when the temp goes above 100 here. The other issue I had, at 60K, one of my engine mounts broke. Couldn't believe it. I am the second owner. I am an old guy so I am a safe driver and rarely ever speed. Previous owner was a senior who used the car to go grocery shopping before she retired to a nursing home. I bought the car at 40k. It is still going strong at 120K now.

I've seen most of these issues with my 2006 Matrix. Bought it cheap (used of course) a couple years ago because that's all I could really afford. And it's just been one thing after another. I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I've had to outsource. And just recently took it in for the airbag recall and they gave me a long list of things it needs addressing with the fluids, the brakes (which had recently started squealing). Someone tried to break into my car, so I had to get a window fixed, still debating whether I should order new locks since these got messed up. Oh, and my kid snapped one of the handles off. But aside from all that, it gets us where we need and is still going strong on all the miles. Just gotta set aside time (soon) to get all these issues finally addressed.

I think I have the bad MAF... but the only issues I get from that are cold start idle surging so I've not yet replaced it. The only other issue Ive had on the list is the window falling out, but that's because someone hit the passenger door in an accident (I was parked) and damaged the mechanism. As for the idling vibrations? The 1ZZ-FE is a very rattly engine - lots of NVH even in VINs with healthy engine mounts.

I have a 2003. Basic model. Put nearly 100k on it in four years driving from Seattle to the Columbia Gorge about 15 times a year to windsurf, then only about 60k since having moved to Hawaii. I’ve run it so dry at time that it took more than three quarts of oil to fill it. I’ve had to replace brakes, battery, alternator and the AC is busted. Just recently had to replace the rear taillights because they were so faded they weren’t red enough for safety check. The rear tailgate latch is so rusted that it won’t lock.
But the main thing is the hubcaps. I lost one, then two, then three and four all within about six years. I see matrixes all over with missing hubs, which cracks me up.
I don’t care. It’s great having a junky car in Hawaii so no one breaks into it. I’m just trying to nurse it al9ng until the EV truck I’ve ordered is ready. I spent $13k to buy it new and maybe $3k since on various little repairs. Excellent mileage. Carries my surfing gear easy. It’s a great car and I’m upset they stopped making it. That fold down front seat is great. It folds down so flat that I can put my nine foot surfboard inside no problem.
