Just did an 08 Vibe. Exactly 4 quarts came out by just removing the plug, dropping the pan and filter drained another .8 to .9 quarts. I'm glad I measured and didn't just go blindly with the 3.2 I see everywhere.

I want to say thank you for the video. I just changed the transmission filter on my 2007 Toyota Matrix, 100K miles, and your advice came in real handy, (left two nuts in the front and back and used Permatex on the pan to hold the gasket). Thanks so much from New Albany, IN!

Thank you so much for the info about it going up to 4 qts for the fill. I did the 3.3 and added from there. I was starting to wonder when it would be done. Lol
thanks....I have an echo and trans looks the same.....I change the fluid every 30,000 mile.....alittle overkill but fliud cheap and tran work is not.....I did pull the pan off at 120,000 miles just to check the strainer....it looked good and also gave me a chance to clean up the pan of any heavy sludge......love the car.....best one I have every owned....thanks again...bob
I have an 05 Matrix that's working on 290,000 miles. I drain and fill the trans just about every other oil change (which I do every 3000 or less!) and it ALWAYS comes out clean. For some reason, I didn't think these had a serviceable strainer. Guess I'm running to the parts store next time! Awesome video man.

Hey Eric I have one question. Why did you feel the need at 11.59 to get dressed up and put a wig on to run the car thro the gears ?Only askin....lmaoTam.
Great video! Planning on doing this with my recently purchased 05 Vibe. I have a couple of quick questions. Is the drain plug washer needed? I heard they're single use crush washers. Should I really replace it every time? Also, I bought some "Copper Spray-a-gasket, High temp sealant" by permatex. Is that pretty much the same gasket adhesive you used in this video? Thanks for this video and any reply you can give me!
Gary George Yes you are suppose top change the plug washer every time but you can get away using them several times IMO. The copper spray tach will work fine , it is just a high temp version of what I use is all.
I doubt that it matters, but the magnet was to the outside of the bump in the pan in the parts cleaner at about 4:00, but Eric put it to the inside at 7:00. 2004 Base Vibe here. I will do this eventually, only 80k and fluid looks good.
Great video as always, Eric. A couple questions on this. I assume that everything is identical with the AWD version of this car, correct? Also, I also assume that the car should be up to operating temp so that the fluid has a lower viscosity and flows out easier?
I was talking to my local transmission shop about changing my fluid on my 05 vibe. He said he would do a drain and fill just like you but I wondered how they got all the fluid out of the torque converter? They said they no longer used flushing because it removed varnishes that caused problems. So they drain, fill, drive, drain and fill again and maybe a third time to get all the transmission fluid out. Do you do this to thoroughly do the job? Also, if switching to synthetic fluid from regular fluid is there a problem with residue mixing with synthetic fluid? Plan to do this on my own and save $178
Tobias Sinclair Well I would do my research as far as the question regarding the mixing of syn. and conventional. I personally have never seen a problem result from it but you better look or call the company of the brand you plan on using. As far as the spill and fill and repeat procedure that is correct and is stated in some shop manuals too.
The gasket spray is unnecessary in most applications. With a few bolts through the holes, the pan goes on fine with the gasket lined up. I don't envy the next person who has to scrape that old one off.
Forgot to mentioned that I have to accelerate a bit to shift to the 4th gear I believe. So the 4th gear takes a bit to engage. Kind of loud. No harsh stroke.
Hi man, do u suggest adding to the atf something like the Lubegard Platinum. I believe the dealers add every time they service the transmission fluid. So, before draining my pan the shifting was getting a bit harsh, but even with the new fluid in did not get much better. This week I added 4oz of the Lubegard, but I felt it needed another once. It feels slightly better, but I am not totally happy yet. What would u do? Done it with the dealer when it was around 100k, and now 180k. I used the toyota T-IV. 2005 matrix awd here. Thx!
Like your videos. Just subscribed. We have a two Matrix - 2005 and 2006 (both bought new). We had both power flushed at around 60K, per dealer's advice. One of them still only had 75k on it. But our main one has 120k on it now. Fluid does not look very dark. Would you recommend power flush, just drain and refill, drain and remove pan and refill or leave it alone? Both cars still look new and we plan on keeping them as they have been great. Thanks, Steve in Ohio
I'm no expert, but everything I've heard and been told advises against the flush. With newer cars that have less wear you're probably able to get away with it.
I bought a 04 vibe yesterday,,,text text text...so I toted it home(150mi) in park(ft tires on toter), drove off toter and test drove it(1st time). Hey Eric ~ Have you ever had to deal with a Dodge Caliber Jatco transmission (CVT2)? I bought mine new back in 2007 and in the warmer months of the year, it tends to make noise, show the overheating light, and I have to pull over to let it cool off. It uses the CTF+4 fluid (which is special to this trans). Have had to deal with any of these things? I was thinking about adding an additional transmission oil cooler but if you have any insight, I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks ~ I found your channel about a month ago and you have helped a ton...
So very important moments wasn’t clearly explained. Torques value for filter bolts, pan bolts and plug... I heard 89in-lb for filter; 48in-lb for pan and 13ft-lb for plug... Correct?
Loved your video, helped me alot. Question: I did it exactly like you did but when i went to dump the old oil for recycling there was well more than a gallon that came out. Everything I read said about 3.4 should have come out. I purchased the car used so i guess it could have been overfilled becsuse at 3.4 qt the dipstick shows a good fill. Any opinion? BTW the old 08 Vibe has 279k and running strong.
+South Main Auto Repair No, didnt dawn on me it would be over filled. Got the oil changed soon after I purchased the car for my teen son. They said the trans oil was dirty and tried to sell a flush. Off to the auto parts store to get a second opinion. Two guys gave polar opposite opinions, one said drop the pan as flush is hard on the tranny, the other said flush since ti gets out all the old oil. I opted for your video (thank you) and am petty happy, but the "extra" waste oil was a shock. Im guessing about 4.5 +/- came out. I filled an old gallon milk carton to the top and have .5 qt to go I'm guessing.
I just added a comment, turns out it's exactly what you said. Bought the car new, 250k miles later did my first transmission service. The dipstick says - under normal diving conditions, fluid never needs to be changed. Anyway, just removing the plug resulted in exactly 4 quarts, pan and filter drained just under 1 additional quart. On an 08 Vibe also.
Way too many people don't know to check auto trans fluid while hot with the engine running. Checking cold fluid with the engine off invariably causes over-filling.
Thanks for watching! I have a couple. Both of them are the Snap On Tech Angle wrenches. 1 in 3/8 and 1 in 1/2".. Might run ya 4 or 5 hundred each can't really remember.

Actually a drain and fill on these is just fine because the filter is more of just a strainer in these but this case the guy just bought the car and wanted to pull the pan to see if there was any chunks haha. Plus it had 177k on it. Thanks for watching!
usually your first service should be around 60k miles (or 95k KM). If you're doing the drain and refill, you'll only get about 1/3 of the fluid out. So you'll wanna do a drain and refill 3 times over the course of a month (or a year if you want to drag it out).
South Main Auto Repair Thanks for the quick response, wow! thought I would be waiting a month or never for a reply! Was it done in the video? sorry if I missed it. Great video by the way! After watching this I have decided to do it myself! I normally do my own oil changes, so this doesn't look much harder! Also a little side question if you don't mind. I have been noticing that my automatic 2008 pontiac vibe (52 K on it, ~ 30,000 miles) has been idling really low when in park or at red lights, it has really low mileage. It's not so bad that it stalls but my car shakes a lot and seems like it could stall (I would say around 600 rpm give or take a 100 rpm). What do you think are some simple things I could check/clean? thanks in advance if you reply!
Why don't you leave the battery unhooked to reset the adaptive memory and clean the throttle body and IACV. See if that helps you. Can't hurt either way :)
What if you don't have a dip stick? I have a 2010 Chevy and no dip stick. I bought the car used. Don't know when or if this service was ever done. Any suggestions?
My matrix has 274k. Bought it at 143k haven't changed the transmission fluid. I'm paranoid that if I do it will start slipping. Should I do this refill or not?
Hi great video, thanks for the info. Question for you. I’ve got a 09’ Matrix with 104000 miles. I want to change the trans oil and filter myself, would it be necessary to have a full flush done or just drain what I can and change filter?
Oh man I see a big spill on my garage coming ! My matrix is manual and it doesn’t apply, no pan, one bolt and probably need to take all the air intake because there is no dip stick ? Not sure….
Just wondering? I'm trying to remove ( replace) the lower control arm on a Pontiac Vibe 2008, I managed to remove all the bolts (after lifting up the trans) but somehow I have a hell of a time to dislocate the arm from its position, , any suggestion? thanks
Nice Video.... I came here seeking some knowledge and advice... I wonder if you could educate me a bit.. A couple of weeks ago my transmission (2008 MATRIX - 180K miles!) decided to QUIT... I was lucky I was a near home so I got it just to PARK... The symptoms are that after some 40 miles of driving the gear disengaged and I was crawling slowly, at high revs.. I stopped at the side of the road, and checked the FLUID LEVEL... IT WAS WAY ABOVE THE "HOT" mark! while I expected LOW LEVEL! After a few minutes - fluid rather warm still - I decided to try again... The car started moving, as the gear engaged, I traveled for half a mile and it started slipping again.. I waited a few minutes, and again traveled half a mile to arrive home.. I have no $$ to have it repaired so I left it parking... NEVER STARTED IT SINCE ! However, even today, two weeks later the fluid level was VERY HIGH ... Today I decided to drain some fluid out - I took out about a quart.. but the HIGH LEVEL STAYS THE SAME!! How can that be? Is there a MALFUNCTION situation that will cause the HIGH LEVEL? I never added fluid - and if anybody did, it was my mechanic (no I did not tell them about this yet!) NOBODY will tell me if the high level could have caused the problem - and if lowering it MAY FIX IT! They want me to tow it in - but I cannot afford anything at this moment! That's why I am asking for your opinion... 1) what could cause HIGH LEVEL besides over-fill? 2) Why does it not go down? I took a quart out.. 3) Is there even a SLIGHT CHANCE that lower level will "CURE" my transmission, by itself? MANY THANKS FOR ANY RESPONSE
Just did an 08 Vibe. Exactly 4 quarts came out by just removing the plug, dropping the pan and filter drained another .8 to .9 quarts. I'm glad I measured and didn't just go blindly with the 3.2 I see everywhere.

The Gospel of John, sooner than later.❤️
What if you don't have a dip stick? I have a 2010 Chevy and no dip stick. I bought the car used. Don't know when or if this service was ever done. Any suggestions?
Cool. Great video
My matrix has 274k. Bought it at 143k haven't changed the transmission fluid. I'm paranoid that if I do it will start slipping. Should I do this refill or not?
This is perfect!
Hi great video, thanks for the info. Question for you.
I’ve got a 09’ Matrix with 104000 miles. I want to change the trans oil and filter myself, would it be necessary to have a full flush done or just drain what I can and change filter?
i've always been told flushes are bad. i'd just drain and replace like an oil change.
Oh man I see a big spill on my garage coming ! My matrix is manual and it doesn’t apply, no pan, one bolt and probably need to take all the air intake because there is no dip stick ? Not sure….
Great Job Thank you
Just wondering? I'm trying to remove ( replace) the lower control arm on a Pontiac Vibe 2008, I managed to remove all the bolts (after lifting up the trans) but somehow I have a hell of a time to dislocate the arm from its position, , any suggestion? thanks
What if I can't make my Pontiac Vibe level when draining the oil? Will that be problem? Or should it be okay? I can only jack up the front of the car.
after you drain the oil in the car can you flush it with eng flush and then put in new oil
and filter
Noooo.
You seem to take care of people :)
Is it okay to use synthetic fluid when replacing the fluid?
Nice work👍
where u get that sweet electric torque wrench
How do you have a 10mm?!?!? Magician!
Can you access the transmission solenoid this way?
I never added fluid - and if anybody did, it was my mechanic (no I did not tell them about this yet!)
NOBODY will tell me if the high level could have caused the problem - and if lowering it MAY FIX IT!
Take it to a mechanic
Did you ever get it fixed? What'd you do and did you find out the cause?
Thanks pal !
Great vid
Is that a new strainer or did you just clean it?
nace video ando thanks for You time
Good job
