Thank you for making this lovely video. As one of the people who worked on PM Roy, I can say that you were pretty spot on with our reasoning on how we thought we should balance him. We wanted to take the character and keep his basic feel and playstyle, while expanding on it further. It was extremely important to make sure that Roy remained true to his core gameplay. I also just want to ensure that Shadic gets some shoutouts as he was a leading force in the development. Roy is very dear to me as a character, and it was a treat to watch.
you did an excellent job fulfilling that goal!! PM feels like the way roy is truly meant to play. i hate the feel of playing floaty characters so i refused to switch to marth, thank you for making my favorite character playable!

Yeah. Like, I'll always like Sakurai's Smash 4/Ultimate Roy better, but man the Project M devs did him justice with his forward tilt. You can even angle it up, and make the animation more closely resemble his attack in Fire Emblem!

His jab and bair are the Hero sword attacks, his fair is the knife swing that thieves do, his f-tilt has more than a passing resemblance to myrmidon attacks. But for some reason he lacks representation for his own attack animations.

This was a great representation of Roy. I love playing Roy in Melee. I understand his flaws and how much people trash on him but he is just the character that I connect with the most. It's always a pleasure to see new PM content being made. I have so many good memories surrounding the game and I love how fast paced and consistent they made Roy.
It would have been interesting to also compare and contrast Nintendo's approach to fixing the character in the newer games too. I feel like on a basic level their idea for the character changed into something totally different.
pssst Melee Roy is just fine. This video is stupid. You only have to win neutral 10x the rate of your opponent and be ok with having to quadruple the percent's needed to kill and he's a perfectly fine character

The editing @4:50 of "dtilt" and "grab" matching up with the visual of dtilt and grab is low key really quality. Also idk if it's just me, but when you showed the side by side of pm and melee I kept expecting pm to be on the right. Something about the old being on the left, and new being on the right feels proper to me, but idk, might just be me. Keep up the good content!

I'd like hear about how PM fixed a character based off their previous games. But I'd love to see them compared to their options int other games, especially Ultimate where most characters tend have a lot more balance in all 3 states
I think talking more about Roy's weaknesses and what makes him bad would've been a good idea, you did touch on him having average mobility in PM but a little more depth about whether or not he has the same weaknesses but less exploitable would've been cool, nevertheless, great video man
Honestly melee roy reminds me of lucina in terms of game plan since if you’re marth you can get pretty early and decent kills. where as with lucina you gotta play the long game but the reward is just satisfying when you finally get that KO.
The first swipe of sword dance is crucial to recovery mixups and distance. First hit of nair SHFFL is great to follow with Dtilt, Ftilt or even Fsmash if the opponent is higher up. Dtilt can combo into itself too. Otherwise, great video!
I would give Roy a mechanic where his sword randomly flashes extremely fast and if you react to it his fully charged neutral b fires off. When his nose turns red he honks, he has fire
It's kinda crazy how melee roy is for most accurate version of roy because he's about as lacking as he is in his game. man struggles in fe6 so hard man.
But he has the Binding Blade in his Smash Bros. appearance, so he should actually be at least decent there by virtue of how ridiculously buff that weapon is.
Well, Roy is decent enough to survive for the first 15 chapters, then he sucks for 5-6 chapters and finally he promotes and becomes really good if you max him, being able to solo the snow trial map with his sword of seals, some iron swords and some silver swords
@@roymain8090 eh i would say he's good for less about 10 chapters. He has okay growths yeah, but the enemies just fuck him up, especially on hard mode. I mean you can make him work, but there's so many other alternatives that do better and it's a lot more convenient in efficient play of FE6 to avoid having roy kill the bosses so he could seize faster. He CAN work, but that requires a bit too much effort for a forgettable unit. He is absolutely good when promoted no arguing that tho.

Roy is always a weird character to play. You will randomly catch someone with an fsmash at like 50% and they are just dead, and you think "damn this character is busted" then other times you have them at like 200% and just can't land a killing move and think "this character is trash." At least in melee.
Hey how do you play Roy on unranked without people instantly forfeiting? That's all that ever happens to me. It doesn't happen as much when I play other characters, just Roy.
