This is the song that made a musician out of me. The first time I heard it on his Blue Moves album I began to take the piano seriously--that very night I spent the next eleven hours sitting at the old piano in my parent's house...
From his Blue Moves album in 1976. Taupin wrote the lyrics during his first marriage breakup leading to divorce. This is my favorite Elton John song and for me just captures something deep...melancholy but still expresses so much yearning and love. "The man who'd love to see you smile....the man who'd love to see you smile...To....night." It gets me every time.
I have always loved Elton John's Music. I was raised surrounded by music.I began my journey of music appreciation at around 8 years of age and discovered a true appreciation of Classical compositions with Funeral for a Friend as well as Candle in the Wind from the classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. I have to totally agree with your sentiment regarding his expression of: "Tonight". However, I could not ignore how the lyrics captured deep emotions within my heart and the delicate way I played it for my husband. Music has always been a form of communication for me and just recently I used Bernie Taupin's hurtful experience that ended his marriage to Save mine. We are coming up on our 20th wedding anniversary. The power of music knows no boundaries.
Blue Moves wasn’t the hit EJs previous LPs were, but it has taken its place in the hearts of millions of fans in its ensuing years. Not to be missed is Someone’s Final Song and Idol.
We had been "fighting" the last few days. My lovely soprano wife played this for me and sang part of it. Melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes. Made the last few days disappear and replaced with love for her.
Just enjoy a beautiful piece of music. Stop arguing about whether or not being gay is right or wrong. This is a debate that will go on forever. Just be who you are and everything will take care of itself. Just leave hate out of the equation. Now, enjoy this masterpiece.
one of the most emotional songs from his Blue Moves album-a dark time for Elton as it was for me. The pressure to produce another powerful record like Captain Fantastic was huge and he was battling his own depression as well. Blue Moves is full of this deep sorrow and pain. Glad he hung in there and is still a part of our world today
Loving the George Michael version of this. What a beautifully crafted song eh? I heard it 20 yrs ago when I was strolling on a beach in Oz all alone. V memorable. Been loving George n Elt ever since!
Elton and George should have performed this song together. Elton's perfect piano skills and George's phenominal voice would make it liquid gold! Unfortunately this will never happen anymore. Such a loss...
I thought the same since Elton on the piano is the best and if they had done it as you say it would have been an atomic bomb to improve this world... but something was against it or did not want it to be like that
Totally amazing. What a talent. His piano playing is magical and his voice is awesome. Love him more back then, only because I love all the piano.....he did in every song.
Allison, I saw him in Huntsville last week, he played non stop for three hour. Believe me...He's still got it thirty eight years after this was recorded. :)
When I was 13/14 years old I had been saving all my pocket to buy Blue Moves when it first came out. I was a bit disappointed with the album overall but this song is one of the highlights - still play it regularly, thanks for this version.
I saw this in the late 70s and have not been able to forget it despite the fact that I never saw it again before tonight. One of the best performances by anyone, ever. And I'm not really an Elton John fan. Had he made a career out of this sort of thing...
I was there that night, James had broken his ankle and had a plaster cast on. So moving from one keyboard to another was made that bit easier with a 'wheeled' chair (see what I did then?). It was one of the best Elton shows I've seen. With special guests, Kiki Dee and Stevie Wonder. Supporting band were China, Davey Johnstone, James Newton Howard etc.
All is said ! No one can compare the original and the remake. The Steinway cry under the fingers of this genius guy. This is the best times of Sir Elton : Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Blue Moves. Damn, I certainly would have given one year of my life to be there...
Sir Elton John! May life keep smiling and presenting you with the best things it can offer. Happy birthday! 🎼🎹🎼 "Tonight" is another one of your songs that I love so much!
This is a great performance. Somewhere in my stack i have to VHS tape of this entire concert. Halfway through the concert he stops and announces that this will be his last show and going to retire.. then goes into Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word while they show Ray Cooper applauding. Classic moment which luckily did not come to pass in the end.
blessed... possessing...moments in my past captured by this song. now with the hearing of it i can revisit them in fond memory. Thank You reginald Thank You..forever.....
+scott l Except his voice was shocking on that concert. Plus the music was overproduced. How can you deny this is a better performance here where his voice was so much better.
Sam Toucan I actually love the raspy voice on Live In Australia. It's adds so much more emotion to songs like Sixty Years On, The King Must Die and Have Mercy In The Criminal.
Elton's piano playing is just incredible but to me George Michael's version vocally blows Elton's away. Even in Elton's prime he didn't have the voice George did. Both versions bring something entirely different to the song so both are great.
i can only pray that there are others who appreciate him like i do
This proved Elton was far more than just a songwriter, an actual composer.
This is the song that made a musician out of me. The first time I heard it on his Blue Moves album I began to take the piano seriously--that very night I spent the next eleven hours sitting at the old piano in my parent's house...
Que dire de la balle une belle sensation que dire bravo messieurs encore merci
This is one of the best songs ever written. Lyrically and Musically.
Bless you for saying that. I think so, too! I love Elton so very very very very much!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the album that started my appreciation of Elton….
Blue Moves wasn’t the hit EJs previous LPs were, but it has taken its place in the hearts of millions of fans in its ensuing years. Not to be missed is Someone’s Final Song and Idol.
It's a heart breaking song at the end of a relationship . !
The music is beautiful. I fell in love with this one when it came out. I was 17. I'm 64 and still listening intently.
We had been "fighting" the last few days. My lovely soprano wife played this for me and sang part of it. Melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes. Made the last few days disappear and replaced with love for her.
Yes I’m crying again
Just enjoy a beautiful piece of music. Stop arguing about whether or not being gay is right or wrong. This is a debate that will go on forever. Just be who you are and everything will take care of itself. Just leave hate out of the equation. Now, enjoy this masterpiece.
The greatest melody maker of our times!
I heard this for the first time recently. Sadly beautiful.
All my life is here. I'm still playing this song in my radio. Thanks Elton !!!!. God bless you
This is the Elton I knew. When he still had his voice.
He still had an amazing from 1970 to today, but honestly I’d say his voice was best in 1997-1999
Correction:1997-2002
he is the greatest piano player of all time(:
i absolutely love elton john.
Simply amazing lyrics and music! Nobody can compare to Bernie and Elton.
How about George Michael doing this same song, search it..
tlallas GM took this song to a higher level vocally and expressively...liquid gold...)))
D.Brook. Amen to that my friend..
No way. No one could touch Elton.
Best piano player EVER!!!
This is magnificent, one of the very best, cry every time I hear it. Thank you Elton❤❤
One of the most beautiful piano melody of all times!!!!!
A
If this is not beautiful, nothing is.
Just beautiful! 💚

One of Elton’s best ballads, sharing Bernie’s marriage travails. This is his best playing of all time.
Loving the George Michael version of this. What a beautifully crafted song eh?
I heard it 20 yrs ago when I was strolling on a beach in Oz all alone. V memorable. Been loving George n Elt ever since!
Blue Moves was and is still my favorite album of his. Just beautiful.
Yang girls
It's very underappreciated because of its theme
It’s one of my favorite albums as well, there’s a nice mix of: rock, pop, ballads, instrumentals, and jazz
Elton and George should have performed this song together. Elton's perfect piano skills and George's phenominal voice would make it liquid gold! Unfortunately this will never happen anymore. Such a loss...
I thought the same since Elton on the piano is the best and if they had done it as you say it would have been an atomic bomb to improve this world... but something was against it or did not want it to be like that
I think that this work remains now since it could not be given to a DJ who takes the trouble to unite Elton's piano with George's voice
One of Elton's best songs. Outstanding concert with his voice being at its best.
I wish Elton still had his voice. I wish it was 30 years ago. I know how he feels. I've lost half of my voice as well. Getting old sux!!
Blue moves I can only say two words. Love it.
Totally amazing. What a talent. His piano playing is magical and his voice is awesome. Love him more back then, only because I love all the piano.....he did in every song.
Elton and Bernie both get better with time. They are still amazing! I Love them Forever and ever!
Allison, I saw him in Huntsville last week, he played non stop for three hour. Believe me...He's still got it thirty eight years after this was recorded. :)
it's like watching Motzart!
When I was 13/14 years old I had been saving all my pocket to buy Blue Moves when it first came out. I was a bit disappointed with the album overall but this song is one of the highlights - still play it regularly, thanks for this version.
His music is so eclectic. Genius.
One of the many great classics by Sir Elton.....
Simply the greatest of our time.
Masterpiece played by a genius!
Watched this concert in London many years ago. Noticed Glen hoodie there. Enjoyed every single second, and cried. Love this guy.!!!
I saw this in the late 70s and have not been able to forget it despite the fact that I never saw it again before tonight. One of the best performances by anyone, ever. And I'm not really an Elton John fan. Had he made a career out of this sort of thing...

this is elton's best song
*Still makes me cry til'nowadays...🤗💓🇧🇷🙏*
Don't forget the contribution of James Newton Howard on the second piano, absolutely brilliant version.
The version with the symphony arranged by James Newton Howard.... STELLAR! The whole album is amazing!
Beautiful brilliant song ❤
Masterpiece...he was a genius melody maker in the 70's 80's
Best live version of this song.
Quel compositeur talentueux! Tellement magnifique cette mélodie qui me bouleverse à chaque écoute…merci Elton pour ce chef d’œuvre! 😘♥️
My favorite song by him, just Brilliant!
One of Elton Johns best songs!
My favorite Elton album...it's packed with hidden treasures like this one.

Damn, I certainly would have given one year of my life to be there...
Brilliant song! One among so many, it's incredible. The greatest ballad composer in history. And now a great new album The Union with Leon Russell.
Forty years ago of this performance and he stills standing!....
Love this song love Elton always have always will.
Great song, great artist! Thanks for sharing Nancy.
מת על השיר הזה!
this is beyond beauty..
maybe the best song i've heard in my life
elton is a legend
:)
I just wish I could play like this! AWESOME!!!
oh this is so good. i've never heard of this song by Elton until I found it here. thank you for posting
i love his hair.
i was verrrry lucky to see him in concert this year.
He was bald. Thats a wig.
I love this, and George Michael can not touch Elton's original version
Definitely not. Elton sings and plays from the heart.
Elton at the top of his game as usual
great song
I really like the version that he sang in 86 with Australian Symphony Orchestra. It really comes together...puts it on a new level.
Fera grande elton.
I remember sitting in a bedsit in 1977 listening this to this....wonderful ..... If only I had not taken life so seriously...
Sir Elton John! May life keep smiling and presenting you with the best things it can offer. Happy birthday!
🎼🎹🎼
"Tonight" is another one of your songs that I love so much!
This is about Elton and Bernie loving people, wherever they are; to smile.
One of my all-time favorites of Elton's.
Beautiful song !
Elton John music... inspiring music♡

Une musique que dire sans commentaire mais j'aime
Absolute class
Meus 18 anos . só lembranças boas .Vivi pra ouvir o Elton, só GRATIDÃO
Elton was so adorable and cute 💖
best song of Elton John, for me . . .
The most important lyric in this song is "The man who loves to see you smile."
magnifique!
He amazed me with his music once. That was unforgetable feelings that I'd ever experienced for his music.
Canción magica
BEAUTIFUL! Just discovered this song. What a gem!
My favourite, along with Curtains, of his sad songs....
Que bela apresentação!🤩👏
Lovely. 1986 with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is beyond amazing though.
The version with the Royal Academy Orchestra is the best
I was there that night, it was mega. He dropped the 'I'm not touring anymore bombshell'. The other keyboard player is James Newton Howard.
Lovely song. Listen to George Michael's version - amazing!
Simplesmente Elton John
Steviemills---I was there that night also...I cried many tears then...many...
Fantastic. Congrats! Thank you so much. 🙏🏻🙌😥🤩
God is dead. Elton lives.
Elton's piano playing is just incredible but to me George Michael's version vocally blows Elton's away. Even in Elton's prime he didn't have the voice George did. Both versions bring something entirely different to the song so both are great.
Too bad George could never compose or play like Elton did. Elton's ORIGINAL version is superior.
