Death Stranding (Hideo Kojima's first game post-Konami break up) is a game I have many complicated feelings about, both positive and negative. To try and make sense of them, let's talk about absurdist philosophy and noise music as we take a spoiler-heavy look at one of the most complex, deliberately exhausting games about walking ever made.

For pretty much every death stranding review and discussion I've seen, I've heard people say "It's not fun, but that's not the point of the game". Am I the only person in the world who genuinely enjoyed the gameplay? I loved having to plan my routes and struggle to get to my destination, how every inch of the world was potentially another tumble, forcing me to walk carefully. While I did take advantage of the reprieve other players were giving me, it never felt like "Oh my god I dont have to play this game for as much time now," when I used their items in the world. It always felt like they were just adding to my grand journey, and inspiring me to pay it forward by building highways and zipline systems. I had FUN. I wasn't experiencing a boring piece of art, I was experiencing a fun game that makes you struggle.
Another thing that seems wierd to me is that I genuinely loved every second I played of this game BECAUSE of the struggle, not in spite of it. It seems like many reviewers are saying "The gameplay is bad and inconveniencing, but in spite of that it's good." I enjoyed having to plan each and every step of where I was going in order to deliver my cargo and other players' cargo in perfect condition.
If someone out there has the same opinion PLEASE let me know. I gotta know if there's something wrong with me.

    • @josh-oo
      @josh-oo 4 года назад +52

I loved every second of it, but I know for a fact there's lots of things wrong with me (intense OCD, social anxiety, clinical depression, and Asperger's Syndrome), so take that with a grain of salt. Dunno if those things made a difference in my enjoyment or not, but I felt like I should mention it for the sake of transparency.

Absolutely I had the same experience as you.
I was one of the people who wasn't excited about death stranding when we just had cinematic trailers. Then I had the strange experience of gameplay coming out and getting excited like "so an exploration game that actually requires being thoughtful??" while most of the people around me were angry that that's what the gameplay was.

Yes, I also found the game incredibly fun, it's no more of a 'do this and then get asked to do it all over again' than any other shooter or anything, the only difference in this game is that the core mechanics are how you traverse the world which is awesome!!

I did this on my server, I had a few moments where I felt as though likes didn’t convey the gratitude I felt, so I spent like 5 hours doing structure building runs.
I guess that’s the meaning I found in the game, likes are nice to convey the minimal amount of sentiment you might have, but if you can do something more meaningful then do it.

Seriously, I felt like I wasn't even that careful and I got all S ranks on deliveries, so I am baffled so many people struggle so much. The game literally tells you to just stand mid-river to recover stamina. It's very blatant about it. As well as that you should scan terrain, which also literally tells you where all uneven footing is or how deep the water is. The game is really not that complicated if you take its basic tips and then use common sense.

While I have yet to play Death Stranding (it's on my to-do list), my understanding is:
If you play slowly, and methodically, and patiently, and focus on a careful fulfilling journey more than the impersonal destination, you will enjoy the game. Death Stranding doesn't seem to want its players to rush over intense terrain, or try to tackle the harshest environments as fast as possible. It will punish playing like that, because playing like that doesn't make logical sense. It's like the anti-speed-run game. You have to be deliberate and slow, because that's what REAL treks are like, which it is simulating to a degree.
I think I'll have fun with it, but time will tell. I'll just have to take it slow to find out.

    • @littlekitsune1

I went in 100% blind to Death Stranding, am playing on hard, and never really encountered anywhere near the difficultly engaging with the mechanics you did. Like, it should seem obvious that maybe, just ditch the trike and walk? Actually look at how much you’re carrying and how quickly that erodes your stamina? Carry tools that actually work in a situation?
I’m three minutes into this analysis and if you can’t interface with the game because you refuse to learn the mechanics, then you don’t have anything meaningful to say about the game.

The first few minutes of this video is like watching someone play Halo without reloading, jumping or using the right stick, and then complaining that the game's challenges are frustrating. EVERY game is frustrating if you blame the game for your own mistakes. Like MOST games, DS gives you new challenges and expects you to form new strategies to overcome them. This is core of gameplay! If you ignore the systems and the ramifications and just say "Nah fuck it I'll just use the same strategy" (like for example by trying to drive a bike through rocky terrain), OF COURSE you're going to fail.

After watching some reviews of death stranding, from "boring" to "masterpiece", i started to think, what makes a good game? Does the game has to be fun? Does it has to be intense? I then look at movies and think: "Not all movies are fun, some of them are sad, some makes us angry, yet they are all good movies." A piece of entertainment doesnt always has to bring the audience positive emotions. The main point of entertainment is to allow the audience to experience things that normally wouldnt be able to in real life, to make them feel emotions they woudnt normally be able to feel. In a war movie, i can see myself standing on the battlefield without having to go to war, when a character dies, i can feel the lost of a loved one without any of my loved ones actually dying. Entertainment is a window into the various possible realities that we can experience for ourselves. Gaming is now the highest possible form of this experience. It allows us to immerse ourselves in so many different, to walk a mile in the shoe of a character, to act out his actions, to forge his bonds, to feel his emotions. Unlike movies and books, gaming allows for a personalized experience that can feel genuine and organic. It s a book where you can choose the ending, its a movie where you can act out the scenes.
This brings me to what i think games have yet to fully utilized-the gameplay. We can divide the gaming experience into 2 parts: the story and the gameplay. Throughout the history of the gaming, the two has been mostly separate components to the gaming experience. When we talk about how gaming allows for a personalized experience that exceeds movies or books, we are talking about the story portion of the game-how the story is written, the choices, the characters, the twists. This is where the game has the same flexibility as movies, the creators are free to invoke whatever emotions from the player, it can sadness, it can be anger, it can be joy, it can be fear....as long as it creates a enjoyable narrative. How about the gameplay? The gameplay on the other hand does not have this flexibility. No matter if the story is like, the gameplay must always be "fun" or "enjoyable". For example, imagine youre playing a shooter game, your comrade and favorite character just died-the game invoked a sense of sadness in you, but the gameplay? it stays the same, you still shoots people with a gun, nothing has changed, the feeling that you you felt from the story does not translate into the gameplay. This keeps the story and gameplay apart, the story can be anything but the gameplay must be fun. For too long, most developers have been afraid of making games that arent "fun" because it wouldnt sell and because they do not see gaming as an art. This is precisely what has been holding gaming back as an art medium. The "gameplay must be fun" dogma has been preventing the gameplay from becoming a part of the artistic value of the game. When the gameplay must be "fun", it limits what the developers can do with it and this limitation creates a drift between the gameplay and story. In short, before, gameplay has been incapable of telling a story or making the players feel anything except of a sense of enjoyment which means 60-70% of the game has wasted potential.
There, however, exist some games that were able to bridge that gap between story and gameplay. Through still in its infancy, the Soul-Borne franchise was able to show us a hint of this. The gameplay of Darksouls and Bloodborne, to some people, was not "fun". It was a grueling test of endurance and determination for first time players. Here, the personalized experience does not come from story but rather gameplay. The way every new enemy is a mystery, how every new boss is a challenge and every death a punch to the guts. The gameplay successfully makes the player feel other feelings outside enjoyment, the player feels fear, anger, anxiety, frustration. This allows for every journey to be unique for the suffering of each players, the way they fight, the way they die unique. The story is barely there and that why you can write your own through how you play the game, its an experience of you, by you and for you. The gameplay has successfully integrated itself into a part of the story and invokes various emotions from the players allowing for a rich gaming experience.
Death Stranding takes this a step further. In the game, every step you take is a task that require your undivided attention. This allows the player to immerse themselves in the character, to feel every step he takes, to understand his plights, his struggle. Many people say that the gameplay is boring, yes, i think it is boring, but let me ask you this: "Was it fun for Sam? Do you think struggling to climb mountains, cross rivers, fighting off enemies to deliver packages fun?" "No, it certainly is not." Yet Sam pushes forward anyway. You are "playing" as Sam and this is his story yet you only want the fun bits while leaving Sam to his own devices when it gets tough. How can you truly "play" as a character if you do not understand his plights? The gameplay of Death stranding allows you to walk a mile in Sam's shoe both literally and figuratively. Every step you take is a step he takes, every obstacle he faces is one you must overcome. Every action contains his story and your will. This allows you to "be" the character, to feel what he feels, to be angry and frustrated when you drop your packages, to feel accomplishment when having delivered a package. The gameplay itself tells the story so that the experience from story to gameplay does not break. In Dark souls and Bloodborne, you can write your own story, in Death stranding, you get to live the story of another. It can be said that Death Stranding right now is the closest to a fully immersed story telling experience. Yet it does not stop there, Death Stranding takes it step further with the strand system-the system that allows players to leaves behind your tools like a ladder or a rope to others to find and use or for players to build roads and bridges (things that they normally cant do by themselves) together. This is no longer the story of one person, it is the story of a community, the story of Death stranding. "To go fast, go alone. To go far, go together". The feeling of finding a bridge over a river that you couldnt cross, a zipline that helps you get over a snowy valley that would have taken you hours to traverse, they are genuine feelings of the player that the story cannot convey. This is the true potential of gameplay that Hideo Kojima was able to observed. To invoke true emotions from the player without having to set it up, unlike story where events are planned out, gameplay like this allows for emotions and memories to manifest organically at hands of the players themselves. Imagine if 10 years from now, you boot up the game and decide to take a trip down the old route and you suddenly notice a ladder that wasnt there before, you will know that out there, somewhere, a player like you left it there. Hideo Kojima has realized story telling and emotional potential of gameplay and pushes gaming further as a art medium. This is why i believe Death Stranding has reinvented gameplay design in gaming and gives us a game that is truly "of the players, by the players and for the players".

very true stuff, i've observed much of the same things. regarding "fun", i think the antonym of "boring" shouldn't be "fun" but rather "engaging". i assume this goes for just about any art piece or media ever. even if it's not fun, you sure as hell don't want it to be boring. you might be reading a deep philosophical book which isn't *fun*, but if you keep reading it then it must be because it is engaging. same thing goes with death stranding and with videogames in general. i really doubt some of the big games people play nowadays are played for fun, like league of legends, or any of those multiplayer games that people rage so much about. granted, they might cross the "engaging" line into being "addictive", but i doubt one would normally consider that fun. same with dark souls, i think the general consensus of why people supposedly enjoy it is due to the high you get when beating a boss, and up until then, you might be feeling incredibly distressed and certainly not having fun, but you sure are engaged. in death stranding, climbing a mountain and passing through treacherous BT territory might not be fun, but it's engaging because you keep doing it. if it was BORING, then you would just turn off the game wouldn't you? boring is sitting on a chair looking at the wall without doing anything at all, but here you're doing stuff with an objective and you work towards that objective.
sadly, i don't think Kojima or anyone is going to "advance" the industry, since these concepts simply don't normally sell (in this case it sold because it's Kojima, and even then theres a huge split in opinion, as evidenced) because the masses don't understand them. they might influence indie developers for sure though, who in turn aim at more niche audiences. it's not like indie gaming hasn't been doing this for a while though, but there's certainly many fresh ideas in DS that have proven effective that i'm sure people will be inspired by in order to create new games in a similar vein.

You obviously notice they put the work in to flesh out the seemingly simple concept of getting from point A to point B with enough mechanics that require thoughtful engagement and strategy as any other "action" game with its core mechanic. Just because it's a verb that sounds boring on paper doesn't mean many people aren't deeply enthralled with it in practice. It's bad when you suck at it, it's deeply rewarding in its own right when you've mastered it, much like you can say for tons of games.

The way you describe your trek to Port Knot City...the slog i've heard from people, I dont get it. What're you people doing? There's so much common sense in traversal, why're people getting swept up in rivers? Why're people needlessly overloading themselves cargowise? Why're people having THAT much trouble driving vehicles? Why're people falling so much? Why would someone drive a sensitive explosive device in a bumpy ass truck and not in a smooth floating carrier (*ahem* dunkey)? So much common sense to approaching playing this, so many people seem to be trying to just get through it as soon as possible, because a lot of this i've heard is from people who've finished the game pretty quickly. If you can come at the game with the appropriate mindset and let yourself fit into the experience, it will be much smoother, not try and play it like a game where you're just fast traveling everywhere. The quiet loneliness, beautiful vistas, music accompaniment and choice moments...it's a bummer some can't click with that. It's not a walking simulator, nor is it like QWOP. Can we not regurgitate some dumb meme statement some moron said? All Kojima's writing has been a mixed bag and had moments of being on the nose. Now that this game is divisive, people act like his goofy writing and moments of iffy dialogue is something new.

But because people already don't like it for the gameplay, they are unfairly presenting the writing as some sort of fall from grace. I think a lot of people are just spouting what they've heard and they haven't actually taken the time to form their own opinion on the game.

First off: agreed! Now, a simple habit to build with a game like this is to put it down for a while when tilt/impatience sets in. I think I see the most negativity about it from people who tried to push themselves past their capacity for both, and hurried themselves to poor results. The game takes some degree of constant focus because movement *is* the game, and you're almost always moving (between movies). Games at large have developed habits in the larger zeitgeist that make this game more difficult than it needs to be.
The first time Sam sits down for a rest in the field, the game even tells you it's good to take breaks in real life, too. People ought to take that advice!

I think you've tried using the vehicules in areas of the game where you aren't suppose to use them.
That moutain section in the beginning, has BTs and rain and steep terrain, to force you to go on foot, and use ropes, ladders, bridges. BTs detect you with the sounds you make, so driving a motorbike through a BT area is a really bad option, so of course you were gonna fall, and damage your stuff.
Also I've found easier to reach a new destination with few equipement, while building ladders, ropes, ziplines, and after that, I was running around heavily loaded : the preparation make the second trip much more easier.
And if you so desire to use vehicules : build roads. I used vehicules on roads, then finished what was left to traverse on feet. I think that's how you're suppose to play the game : Not fully with vehicules, but not fully on foot either

As someone else said, it's strange how you view playing the game as being 'the punchline of some joke'. Even though you say that other people are going through it with you, and that you appreciate the game for it at the end, I just don't get why people think the game was designed to not be 'fun' or is intentionally miserable or frustrating.
In Dark Souls, when you're walking through a tight corridor and you round a corner or go through a doorway, and an enemy you couldn't see comes from behind to stab you or some trap activates because you stepped on a plate, does anyone really think Miyazaki just wanted people to feel frustrated or angry? (Because, in that instance, I don't think anyone would say that was fun) Or - as he himself has stated that he does not create difficulty for difficulty's sake - did he craft a game that required the player to be observant and patient to learn the layout of the map or the patterns of the enemies, even through many, many deaths, so that they feel accomplishment?
Why must Death Stranding be the game that just wants to frustrate the player and not be fun? Sure, Dark Souls is more immediately mechanically engaging, but a lot of the design is similar in how the mechanics are in service to a purpose; an experience it wants for the player. I can't tell you to enjoy Death Stranding. I've seen a not insignificant amount of people say that a player must get through the first 10 hours or so before the game 'gets good', but I don't see it that way. I enjoyed the game from the beginning. That's not to say that I have a better opinion or anything, but it's just so strange to me. It feels like a mindset people had going into the game; a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'm not going to say you played it wrong, and I see your reply to the intro, but still, seeing people play the game like that.. well, I guess it is comical. But it's not necessarily the games fault, it's the dramatic irony you made for yourself. You have to understand that the dismissive tone the intro and other reviewers have, while at the same time showing footage of brute-forcing through areas without terrain consideration, is really disheartening. Death Stranding's gameplay mechanics are precisely what they needed to be for the game that it wanted to be. Any easier and the game would have had no challenge. Any more focus on combat and it would have been just like any other game out there. People say it's not for everyone, but to me, it's more that the game isn't like the 90% or more of the typical games out today, where traversal is so trivial that it basically requires no thought, and combat so frequent that for all intents and purposes it's the main expression the player has on the game world.
Ultimately, you say you appreciate the game and I'm not directly bashing you. I just think this is a similar conversation as one we had with Red Dead last year, and it's only been amplified with the uniqueness of DS's design along with the moreso unique personality and legacy of it's creator, and allllll the expectations and preconceptions that enveloped it.
Shit.... I'll probably make a video on this now.

You said it perfectly, thank you. I'm not understanding how the main draw of a game like Dark Souls is that you need to take the game at a pace where you can learn the ins and outs to be successful, but then this game gets bashed for doing the same thing. I'm not trying to say this game and Dark Souls are the same, because obviously they're not, but it is disheartening to see people lacking enjoyment here because they brute force it instead of doing what they praise Dark Souls for. I've seen other amazing games bashed for the same reasons of players simply ignoring the adaption to mechanics in favor of brute forcing everything, and it really sucks, not gonna lie. One of the big ones recently was The Last Guardian, which is my favorite game of all time currently, so maybe I am overly defensive, but I do think current games have bred this mentality of playing for instant gratification instead of engaging with the actual mechanics or game logic.

I feel Kojima intentionally made the base gameplay punishing, only for you to truly appreciate how much more enjoyable it can be if you take full advantage of the features that open up much later. That's also when the brilliance of the asynchronous multiplayer really started to shine.

I think if you take more time to learn the basics its actually a pretty easy game on normal. Holding R2 and L2 means you'll auto balance for most stuff at the cost of not being able to run. Once you're balanced you can run in a straight line without needing to rebalance so by using those two concepts together you basically press and hold the triggers when cornering or turning your Reedus.
BTs are fully visible if you stand still and you only need to hold your breath when they're tracking you as shown in the cinematic early on.
Always bring a few PCC's with you, level 2 when you get them. Now you can just build ziplines making the trek back or side missions in that area super fast and easy. That then leads to more chiralbandwidth for more buildings and better equipment.
Make sure you customize your backpack, i added two extra batteries making the robotic exoskeletons last a super long time. If you're in snow or slide and fall a lot use the climbing one and gloves, if you think you've got it figured out use the speed one for super longjumps or power to carry even more and still be able to run fullspeed.

I enjoyed so much the game, it was very appealing and fun to me like it was for so many people, I would liked that more people enjoyed the game like those of us that did, why? So more games like this would be made in the future, games that really take the leap of faith an really push forward the medium. Modern games DO have a system of "do this as fast as you can and you get a sudden reward" which leads to meta and grind, and we are very used to it. Which ironically, is monotonous, like you said, and even worst, is to classify as "to work for it", that makes the gamr less fun and more like a task to complete and that is it. This game is not that, is basic, but the your approach is independent of the objective. That is why not having a reward (which what I meant with essensial reward) is what makes it not monotonous, you have the choice of what to do and how. Because if we think that monotonous means doing the same thing over and over again, then so it is CoD or RDR2, or even FIFA. But that is not the case, we like those games because we can spice up the formula, going with a different loadout to a TDM or replaying a campaign with a different ending. Walking is the mechanic of the game, but making the walk fun, is up to you, not the game. It's a term of selfmeaning, not adquiring it and needing something or someone else to fullfill us

Diego Devars I said that the amount of patience required to tolerate this game is absurd. Since you have to wait for so long for the game to get good. And when it does, it’s not that great anyways. The required amount of patience for this game makes it even worse than a task, it makes it a chore. I have no idea where you are getting this, “do this fast and then sudden reward” thing. Every game I can think of has something different than this. DMC requires positioning, knowledge, and reflexes to use the toolset in a way that you choose. No reward for doing so except that process itself. Doom required speed, yes. But that speed is managing resources, threat assessment, and movement. Combine that with weapons and arenas built around it, combat encounters are never the same, the opposite of what you claim. Resident evil requires patience and planning to survive. The opposite of the fast reward thing you are talking about. I have no idea where that comes from. And remember, none of this is monotonous. It varies by design since they want their games to be enjoyed over dozens of hours. And the meta and grind, meta is due to player choice since it is discovered, not designed, and grinding leads to different character builds in rpgs and is the opposite of sudden reward, since grinding requires time to get the reward you want from that process. Not having a reward doesn’t affect if it is monotonous, that just means the pressure of that mechanic is placed on it, since there is no reward for doing it, players will have to be enticed by that mechanic itself. That does not make it monotonous or not. And yes, you have a choice, but those choices lack anything significant. Different routes lead to the same place and play nearly identical. That’s very monotonous. Attempting to try to climb treacherous terrain is something the game flat out states it will punish so they don’t want you doing that. There is no real choice there since it leads to the same thing, and barely plays different. None of the options even offer any sort of challenge either. That’s what I meant to work for it. Who wants a passive hobby in which everything is incredibly easy and requires no effort? That’s why it’s monotonous and tedious. You do that the whole game, and the different options fail to really distinguish themselves. They are different, they don’t feel different.
Game design 101: it is never the players job to vary or make the game fun. That is bad design since most people operate their day to day lives like that. If a game can end up tedious, that’s on the game, not the player. A game that puts that responsibility on the player is poorly designed. Any game design class will repeat that until you are blue in the face. Not that it matters in death strandings case, since all of the options feel the same anyways. When you can pick smart routes, they often come without downsides except time taken and bringing different equipment. Using a ladder is not varied gameplay since it really doesn’t add anything to the gameplay sandbox in terms of something the player engages with. Neither does a car. That’s where the BT’s come in, and the game tells you to avoid them and that is far to easy, even on hard. The game is at fault for that kind of design if you had to vary it. But for some reason, you assumed I didn’t do that. You assumed I didn’t try different routes and gear. I did, and I still made that judgement.

The "annoying animations" when you approach a BT area are just loading screens. It's the way they found to stop the game just long enough to load the rain and darker atmosphere. It can get exhausting after a while, but if you understand why they did it, it's slightly more tolerable. :)

So there are quite a lot of people commenting on the first few minutes about how the situation Kojima described didn't play out that way for me, that it felt like a "cruel cosmic joke," a "comedy game," etc. and taking that as me somehow saying I hate the game or that I'm blaming Kojima for not holding my hand or providing a streamlined experience. To that I would say, I was laughing the whole time. I thought that cosmic joke was funny. That intro was intended as just a bit of a goof to get to the main points I wanted to make.
I might not have had much "fun" with it, but if you've watched my videos for any length of time you'll know that isn't as important to me as a meaningful experience and, for a good deal of its playtime, Death Stranding was that. I'm absolutely glad it exists in the way it does, even if I have quite a few legitimate issues with it. I probably could have communicated that better in the intro, apologies.
I'd ask you to keep watching (although you obviously aren't obliged). I go on to talk at length about how the traversal mechanics absolutely need to be the way they are to convey the game's philosophical themes, and how reaching the end of the game made me look back on my slog through it in a completely different light. Hopefully that clears some things up.

I think kojima should waited till the first scripted bt fight before giving the player hematic grenades. That section with the rough terrain and bts on your way to lake knot city was definitely a hint to ditch the bike and slowly stealth the bts. I made the same mistake and triggered the boss bt as well, but I didn't know how to combat so I reset the mission and took the hint.
It's cathartic when you reach the top of the ridge after a tense stealth section the weather clears and you see a relatively clear path to the new city. Didn't made me tear up, but i definitely felt something.

Would have preferred a critique on his clunky writing, on the nose naming conventions, and his inability to move between acts without exposition dumps.
I honestly think the success of this game is at least partially tied to Kojima’s cult of personality. It was a self-indulgent artistic exercise imo. If Kojima had someone like Marcia Lucas (for George Lucas) or Sally JoAnne Menke (for Quentin Tarantino) - basically ppl who are better at narrative design and can tell creatives to pull back when they get over indulgent, this game would have been far more effective as a piece of art.
Because basically, what this video and what other Kojima-apologists tell me is that at least some of the appreciation borne from this game is due to stockholm syndrome.
And as a writer yourself, you know when someone takes 1,000 words to tell you something that should have taken 10, it’s treading on “I am 14 and this is deep,” territory.
I was not expecting apologism that wasn’t really related to the actual writing content of this game so I am honestly disappointed.
If you can find them, look up Kojima’s feuds with his translators and actual writers who have worked with him. He is not a great storyteller. And I’m worried that when he moves on to movies, he won’t have gameplay to hide behind in a movie and his kingdom hearts style storytelling will be laid bare.

@@dxcSOUL Yeah I felt like the writing was an abject disaster too, but I feel that since it's Kojima, nobody's really going to get into it too much, for fear of the standard "you just weren't smart enough to understand that calling Clifford, Cliff, and having him give exposition about 'being like every other cliff' and Sam being his 'Bridge' to the future, was actually a really smart and subversive piece of writing by Kojima, because he wanted to draw attention to what he sees as an artistic travesty in the growth of cliches and dialogue in movies that is just too on the nose. If you read the credits diagonally from top right to bottom left after entering the Konami code it says so. Stupid games critic not understanding true brilliance. Coming out of MGSV I found this game really easy to pick up and start playing, that hill scene within the first 10 hours did hit me with quite an impact. Personally I DID feel like I was playing the game I've been fanboy'ing over for years. Idk perhaps there's some familiarity involved with Kojima games that allows for some relative ease when first dealing with UI and gameplay. I never really had trouble with this game and I had a really fun time working my way through the 50 hour story. Everything feels intentional by Kojima, from the beginning hours of the game where you are struggling (as you did in this analysis), to the endgame where your gear and the Chiral Network boost Sam's abilities to "super deliverer" levels. This game evolves as you play it, and unfortunately it may turn some people off that you have to play for a significant amount of time to get to the "good stuff". But personally I feel like this is the type of game that leaves me feeling like I spent my money's worth. The core game loop is "repetitive" yes, you deliver packages. But what game isn't repetitive?(Yes I'm talking to you Fortnite and COD fans.) I enjoyed the struggle in the beginning of the game compared to now, where my deliveries take 5 mins tops using the highway system myself and my fellow porters have built!

I can say I have, both going down and up a hill on several occasions. Basically when I was in High School, I lived on a campus. (Private school for those who are wondering) There's this hill that you can climb up and down and it helps you save time since the alternative is to follow the road and walk around it or take the stairs which by the time you reach the top, you are now above the roof of the cottages the students stayed at. So basically going up the hill is a bit of a trick, since it's steep and it's very easy to misstep and fall over. I had this happen in rain where I wasn't wearing the right footwear and so when climbing up, I slipped, landed on my side and slid down the hill. After that incident, I wore a good pair of boots from then on out and I never had that happen again, even when it was raining. As for running down the hill, yeah when you are doing that you f**king move. Imagine riding a bike or skateboard down a hill, now imagine that speed where you are trying to keep up and one misstep and bam, you hit the floor harder than building.

Damn, we've had such a different experience. That scene with the heart guy is one of my favorite in the game, I just got so completely immersed by the sound design and aesthetic that by the time I got to him I was engrossed by every little detail in the scene, from the sound of the padded floor to the enclosed space he's trapped himself in. Every little moment of struggle or reprieve had such an impact on me, and I really loved the strange cast and writing. This game is not elegantly written at all, but I loved how it was either insanely absurd and funny or geniuinely creepy and interesting.

I've had trouble expressing to others how I feel about the game. My response has been, "you have to play it to understand" (insert Joker meme here). I'm also writing this as someone who has never played a Kojima game. So, I'll just rant about my experience for a second.
I've been looking forward to this game since the initial teaser trailer. When the game came out, I thought i would be playing the game until the early morning. After a few hours, I realized I haven't actually played the game yet and decided to go to bed. I felt disappointed and thought that maybe I hyped myself up for all these years. Next day, I got into it again...after the grueling 2nd or 3rd chapter (I don't remember), the game opened up and rewarded me for my patience and struggle. It wasn't until the first credit scene that I decided I love the game.
I agree that this game isn't for everyone and it's exhausting to play. If I knew that it would've taken me over 10 hours to get to "the good part", I probably wouldn't have played this. Sure, the game isn't perfect but I haven't stopped thinking about the game (maybe because I haven't stopped listening to Low Roar since the game came out). I think because of the grind, I learned to love the game.
As a side note, I sometimes would force my way on a bike through that rocky area and attempt to Skyrim climb with the bike up a mountain. I also tried to make a bridge over the Cosplayer for an hour (didn't work), if that tells you anything about me. I also think the game is self-aware and Kojima is just trolling (especially when you have that fight with Higgs and he asks if this is what you've been waiting for). At the end of the day, I'm glad I played this and sad that feeling of anticipation is gone.

Trying to brute force this game doesn't end well. Though I personally disagree that it took 10 hours to become enjoyable. When you get floating carriers and zip lines, deliveries become ridiculously easy and the only time I really had to traverse harsh terrain was when you had to go to a new location. But then you activate the chiral network, throw in more zip lines and you're good to go.

The reviewers complaining about traversal being absurdly tedious and hard while simultaneously showing footage of them just full sprinting up 90 degree rocky terrain with a tower of cargo and driving trucks off cliffs thinking its the games fault.

You guys should check the Like Stories of Old analysis of this game. It's a brilliant complement to the game and a nice thing to watch after this review, which is also very good.

"stunt-casting". THAT is the word I needed for this... Kojima's games have needed the word since MGS4
