    Ive also noticed this to a certain degree with Johns playing over the years too, sometimes its more obvious, sometimes you kinda split hairs. I chalk it up to being less about technique and more about John being young, hungry and on fire in the early years. Plus perhaps there are fatigue and stamina issues involved, especially as you get older, imagine the touring and long sets he does and trying to give it your all 100% of the time, you gotta be in serious guitar shape to just get through DT lvl material night after night, let alone NAIL everything night after night.

  • @cortarelva
    @cortarelva Год назад +5

    The only reason I can think of is that John might have discovered an issue with his wrist or his tendons and changed his playing style in order to mitigate that issue. Of course changing to such a different techinque would have implications in his accuracy inititally but it would also explain why he started bulking so much after they had that year off from touring (when he let his hair grow back again) as it more or less coincides with the time he started using this picking style more and his phrasing changed to a rougher style especially as he stoped using as much legato as he used to. Of course now he totaly mastered this playing style and his playing his again as rich as it was back in the 90s but there was a short time when JP was all about speed picking and little else.

    I’ve noticed this. Especially the double picking he does to compensate for desynching L and R hand. It could be age, or losing flexibility due to gaining so much muscle mass. He also has so much more music to practice, and remember these days. Adding whole albums to their rotating set lists can’t be easy for a band such as DT

    Someone in the comments mentioned this: "Google the article; John Petrucci Explains What Made Him Change His Mind That Right-Hand Picking Must 'Only Come From the Wrist''." It seems to be an intentional change. I watched a guitar player explaining when he used pick slanting before, and he said that after a while, pick slanting would become unviable and he'd have to sweep through other strings using his forearm to keep alternate picking. And he'd mute those strings with his left hand. Seeing it in action was pretty crazy. It's possible that Petrucci just hasn't mastered the forearm motion after switching to it or perhaps he's using it at bpms that are not fit for it or for licks that are not fit for it. Or maybe he has a mastery of it and can play it perfectly but the lack of daily exercises makes it seem sloppy. I'm not sure, I'm just speculating.

    Do you have a take on Anton Oparin's picking technique? The guy is a freak and made a really long video (similar to this type of analysis) basically ranking all the greats picking techinques and ranking himself above all of them. Seems a bit arrogant but the guy has some good points at the same time.

    • @CompleteProducer84
      @CompleteProducer84 Год назад +2

      I would love to see this too. His technique is a huge mystery. I literally emailed him about 30 times, and left around 10 RUclips comments to buy his picking video course, and he never got back to me. Apparently he doesn't want my $400. If he wasn't so good, I would just write him off but there is no denying his skill. I believe the "secret" has to do with some kind of forearm movement that is difficult to target, but I am not sure. He talks about it briefly on one of the videos about Paul Gilbert.

    • @justin.hombach
      @justin.hombach  Год назад +2

      I love his technique, really inspiring, the video helped me a lot pointing out mistakes and flaws in my playing too, which I nearly fixed since then.
      Tho, I‘m really not the fan how he talks about some colleges (and even friends of mine) in this video. Taking Video clips a bit out of context, which probably were produced under conditions, where you have so many more parameters that has an influence on your playing (especially on Guthries, Martins and Jason’s clips).
      I tried to email him and get more informations about his picking as well, never got an answer.
      But I think the secret behind is technique is: Getting an awareness, by Focus and a lot of patience practicing. 😅

    The answer is that picking from wrist requires more focus and so much more work, so as people get older, they may not have the same ambition when they were young and practice less, and the only way to play those licks and solos without practicing much is by playing from the elbow.

    JP is the one player I would LOVE to see a Troy Grady breakdown on. In all eras of JP's playing, I don't see a clear 2-Way Pickslanting motion, so I think he is either a swiper or a "902" player, where he uses supination mixed with an "outward" escape for the downstroke. Troy has a video on that and I believe he mentions JP in it.

    He probably just doesn’t care to practise all the time anymore. He’s middle aged, successful, and respected. To play the way he used to play is something that requires constant drilling, which he probably just can’t be bothered to do now. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but being a virtuoso is a full time job. It’s not like riding a bike where you can go years without doing it and hop right back on with no problem. Jascha Heifetz said “If I don't practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it.”

    • @justin.hombach
      @justin.hombach  Год назад +1

      Tbh, I don’t really believe that. This is to easy, making such a dramatic change in his technique is something that happens just with „not practicing“ anymore.
      And keep in mind, the live from la version, he was only like 42/43 so not that old (hopefully, because this is me in 10 years).
      In one of the videos from his Petrucci camp he mentioned, that he still tries to improve his technique and tries to learn new picking methods. (For example, there was a member in the audience who actually teached him some new techniques and Petrucci practiced this for a while he said).
      So I think there is a reason behind this, which one? This our mission to find out, but first and foremost, this video is simply an observation that something has changed.

  • @AJPMUSIC_OFFICIAL

    Some guessing: in the 2000s at some point JP was in an accident as he stated he started lifting weights as part if the rehab/physio for it and caught the bug. I wonder if that could be a factor?
    He also looks less comfortable with the forearm angle compared to 90s JP, I suppose his musculature could induce less optimal angles but also it could be from pain and issues from guitar playing itself maybe?
    I remember seeing this around the train if thought era but I cant remember if it was constant as its not something I thought about.

    This is the reason why I never use my elbow or arm unless I'm playing rhythm guitar
    The wrist and index and thumb movement are the best way to play lead accurately
    I personally believe people who pick like Yngwie Malmsteen and norifumi Shima have the best control over their lines
    I also think John's technique changed because of lack of practice
    Or maybe because lifting heavy weights made him subconsciously use his forearm and arm more
    I dunno
    You're not alone by the way,I also noticed how sloppy he became because of that technique change

  • @marcvalles1515
    @marcvalles1515 Год назад +2

    Maybe the reason behind this change is the chronic tendonitis he suffers (I'm pretty sure he said it himself in some interviews, but I could be wrong). This could also explain the left hand not keeping up with the right hand, as the latter is able to use the forearm support while the left can... I don't know, I'm not an expert. What do you think?

    • @058279941
      @058279941 Год назад +2

      NOT true. John never had chronic tendonitis. He had a short period of pain but it went away quickly once he started warming up correctly. it has nothing to do with his new picking style. he changed it.
