Upgrading Laptop Memory (Lenovo from Costco) (4GB to 12GB)

  • I bought a laptop from Costco for $200 + shipping + tax = $227
    It came with Windows 11 S mode which will not allow you to install any other programs that are not approved by Microsoft. I had to disable it to install Webex, Google Chrome, etc. It's slow as heck when it is in the regular Window 11. I cannot open Chrome without having to wait 30-50 seconds. I did three things to improve the speed of this laptop
    1 - I uninstalled useless apps/programs that I do not use (in Settings - Apps)
    2 - I disabled the useless apps in the Start Up so it will boot up faster ( in Task Manager)
    3 - I added another 8GB of RAM bringing the total to 12GB. This laptop has two memory slots so I turned it into a Dual Channel instead of Single Channel at 2933Mhz. Dual Channel is preferred for laptop/PC with integrated graphic since the system will reserve a portion of the RAM for the graphic processing unit. The system uses 5-6GB of RAM when I was watching RUclips while having multiple tabs open at the same time.
    I can now open multiple programs while having Google Chrome with 50+ tabs and will not encounter any slow down.
    These are the links to the laptop and memory I mentioned in this video.

    What a deal! I got mine for $150 at Costco last week and just added a 16GB stick to it and its running Crysis without any problems! Nice video!

      @@JonJangerson Correct! Mine is the "IdeaPad 1 15IJL7" and its registering 20GB of RAM as I type this. Interesting! I see some conflicting info. Some say 16GB and some say 12GB as the maximum. I don't know what to say but mine is registering as 20GB of memory.

    Big thumbs up. Thanks. Now I need to figure out how to cone the drive to a larger SSD. Task one for me was taking it out of S Mode. It would not run any of the applications I bought it for as I didn't know what S Mode was. S mode will allow you to boot from USB, but ONLY if it is a Windows Recovery drive. Can not boot a Linux drive in S Mode. Google how to turn off S Mode without a Microsoft Account to make the machine useful.

    On further research if you have X-channel it might wowrk but will still not be optimal, might actually be slower than single channel 4GB. Math the 2nd channel with another 4GB stick of so memory 🙂

      It's a waste of money. The system never used more than 6-8GB of RAM at any time. I opened 20-30+ chrome tabs at once. Save the money and upgrade the SSD if you want.

    Is there not a problem with dual channel miss match. The soldered memory is 4 GB so the 2nd channel should be 4 GB. It's ok to down clock to 2400 but you could get random crash results if you try to address 8GB into a 4GB slot in dual channel. Maybe there is something in the os that I am not aware of but this is how it used to be in Win10.

    • @kiritops944
      @kiritops944 10 месяцев назад

      so what you're saying is if the soldered ram is 4GB, you also put 4gb ram for the dual channel work properly?

      You cannot remove the installed SSD but you can add an additional SSD if you want. The slot to install the SDD is right next to the memory slot. I marked it in the picture for you. imgur.com/OzClwOV

    Do you have to remove S-mode to be able to upgrade ram??

    • @noviceateverything2022
      @noviceateverything2022  6 месяцев назад +1

      No. You can upgrade the RAM without switching out of S mode. Personally, S Mode had too many restrictions for me. S mode was designed for PC with low RAM which was no long applicable for me after I upgraded the RAM

      Thanks but I bought the exact 8gb ram from the link you provided and properly installed it on the same exact $200 Lenovo but I get nothing but a blank screen on startup. Both ram and laptop are brand new so nothing is wrong with them. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ram and still no results. Any idea what I should do?

      @@noviceateverything2022 I tried 3 different RAMs, two of which was recommended via link for this specific laptop (including yours), the one I bought most recent was even recommended by Lenovo yet none of them work! I get nothing but a black screen at startup. Laptop and RAMs are all brand new condition and I made sure I connected the RAMs securely and correctly. This is nuts. I wonder why that RAM works on your laptop and not mine? We are both using the same exact laptop and RAM

      @noviceateverything2022  7 месяцев назад

      ? Did you buy it used ? The clips to hold the RAM down should already be installed if not then it was probably damaged by someone. You can try buying them on Ebay but it will be a challenge unless you know the exact part #. I bought 3 more of these laptops a few days before Christmas. I plan to upgrade the memory and the storage on them in a different video later.

      No. It is a waste of money in my opinion. My laptop has 12GB now but it will only use 6-7GB when I have multiple programs open along with Chrome. I opened 40 Chrome tabs at once and the system will only use 5-7GB of RAM. 12GB of RAM is plenty for daily use.

      4GB will be ok for Windows 11 S mode but you are limited to what you can do within S mode. The system will be using about 6GB most of the time when i'm no longer in S mode. 12GB is plenty for my use. The listed RAM also dropped in price, it's $22 on amazon now instead of $28
