CLAB Architettura completely revitalised this dingy 1970s Italian apartment, transforming the space by reintroducing light and reorganising it into an efficient, compact home. Characterised by its rural features, outdoor porches and surrounding gardens, the simple interior originally lacked any real form of storage and organisation. Familiar with the home's unique problems as Matteo of CLAB Architettura had lived in the home before his redesign, the architects were able to create more defined living, dining, and sleeping areas by moving the kitchen into the empty space underneath the building's stairwell and relocating the bathroom door. Additional storage was also introduced, along with extra wardrobe space under a raised double bed easily concealed behind a curtain.

Why do architects hate natural elegant look and feel of a space!
The beams, the bricks, the fireplace and the floor were the living elements of the house. They tore it down to make it an ultra-modern sterile box with storage units with no eye for sophistication and appreciation for the ambiance and heritage of the building.
There have to be alternate ways to reflect your modernism without stripping down everything that gives vibe of 'traditional' to your 'modern' lifestyle and thinking. The look was minimalistic but only on the facade; the place is stuffed with monotonous storage boxes all over.
This unit is alien to its location. Its design could actually be more fit for multistoried cookie cutter govt housing projects that need facelift and ample storage solutions.

The garden outside is so beautiful. Although I like the functional aspect of the design, I feel like it’s too bland and doesn’t reflect the landscape outside. It have been nice to leave a few quaint details of the old structure to bring the beauty of outside, in.

Functionally it is an A plus space!
However, the connection with the building and its cultural environment is completely gone. It would have been much more appropriate if they had kept some typical atmospheric and warm Mediterranean elements. Or incorporated a few references into the new design.
Now it is a clever but average Never Too Small apartment that can be found in every major city in the world.

It's a nice utilisation of space. Something is bothering about the new layout...I don't know if it is the oversize sofa, or the curtain to access the bedroom or even the wall blocking the kitchen. Think they should remove the massive sofa and the kitchen wall, make the kitchen open, replace the sofa with a normal size sofa bed and rework the lay out of the space, so that they can add a glass wall for the bedroom and a sliding door on the side of the bedroom that would fit in the wooden unit. Maybe do it like Marie did in the Scandi video 3 weeks ago, her apartment had similar lay out and she merge the bedroom and bathroom. It was beautifully done, more lights and. Spacious feel

As a person that likes the Mediterranean Architecture & Style (Italian and Spanish), I like the 'Before Architecture & Style' with the floor tiles, the wooden ceiling beams, the bricks and that lovely fireplace. It would have been worthwhile to keep that architecture & style as the character of the place, and just add functionality to the space. But as said before, this is my personal view and comment.

  • @cassuaris
    @cassuaris 5 месяцев назад +22

I feel they missed the opportunity to add a bigger fridge, as it now stops at the height of the countertop while there's still enough space left till you reach the ceiling.
Also, adding that door in the bathroom leading to the storage underneath the bed is a really bad idea, your mattress needs ventilation to get rid of the moisture you produce during the night.. With that door in the bathroom you're adding more moisture and thus destroying your mattress, probably even creating mold underneath.
I like how the apartment looks so much brighter, but I hate the little window by the bed, it opens inwards hitting the bedding with outside dirt and grime when you open it, and why does it not have curtains?

I don't want to sound critical, but I just find that the choice of materials on the inside clashes with the outside. Another thing I don't understand why everyone chooses that yellowish wood and leaves it natural, I think coloured would have been better. Having said that, I really like the appartment and you can see that they have done a great job.

The cleverly designed inbuilt storage within the raised platform of the bedroom reminds me of the work of Brad Swartz. A stylish solution to create storage in a tiny bedroom.

  • @rafiaahmad8425

I kinda agree it should’ve stayed in the old style and somehow the architects should’ve worked more on bringing more light into the space while keeping the integrity of the architecture. It was fine to relocate the kitchen. They ‘tried’ to go with lighter mustard colors, to fit the indoor with outdoor environment, but it doesn’t work. The hanging closet underneath the bed is awkward. I would’ve also brought down the new kitchen’s wall to open the kitchen into the living room for a larger, more open feel. You wouldn’t need any mirrors to reflect and ‘expand’ the kitchen space if that were done. It’s also weird to go into a dark entrance/hallway that leads to the bathroom. Could’ve done a much better job. TV could’ve been hung on the perpendicular wall to the left. Bathroom wall could be brought forward to create a bigger space but none of the tv unit was necessary

I love the pre-reno apartment! Just swaping the enterance with the window would create better flow, placing the closet space in a perfect spot for shoes/coats, and creating a nice fireplace nook that is not interupted by a door. If a separte bed area is desired, perhaps a "bed cave" could be built into the storage area under the stairs and similarly separated with a curtain. Refinishing the wood beams and door frames could lighten the space not to mention lighter furniture pieces. The original kitchen was compact but likely efficient. The new kitchen feels cramped and requires walking back and forth for everything - imagine how claustiphobic it would feel if someone else was cooking with you! While the bedroom looks like a pleasent space to sleep, imagine the glare you'd get on the TV and the feeling of unease you'd have sitting in the living room with your back to a glass door that everyone can see into. Where the previous apartment was built with durable materials that match the age and character of the building the new materials are neither unique nor will they age well. Why build an apartment that looks like a cheap coffee shop when you could build one that feels like a home!

I appreciate the feeling of space given from the matching wall and ceiling colors, but I can't help but want an accent wall for a splash of color. The large wooden cabinet is also a great minimalist piece but also hides some opportunities for expression where there could be some open shelving in place of a cabinet door. Getting that balance right of covering objects for visual simplicity but adding variety to keep visual interest is tough, but I do feel there's some more room to play. Thank you for sharing, seeing this very tidy solution to a tight space was lovely

It would be nicer to have a couch along the wall, a small couch table with storage and a chair in front of the television. And then have a bookcase at the wall to the kitchen - or between the door and the window - or a low bookcase under the window.

Jeeez enough with the plywood and polyurethane big box design already. It had its moment 5 years ago. Now it just screams low budget ikea design. And theres no ways you can ever get the panel gaps to look straight, so the shadows are some jarring. Fail...

The only thing I don’t like about this apartment is how the kitchen is tucked away and closed in.I think it would have been better to take the wall out that separates the kitchen and open it up could have put a island

The kitchen being closed off takes away form the rest of the amazing renovations that you did. It looks institutional and unwelcoming to cook in.

    I like it.
However, that curtain needs to be upgraded to something less like a grubby old hospital curtain!
Perhaps something in a rich velvet?

Having lived & worked in UK and Ireland, I really notice the difference in space-efficiency in kitchens & bathrooms there compared to most European apartments, which tend to use more space for kitchens & bathrooms and less for living & sleeping areas. In really small spaces like this that could make a difference to the volume of usable space.

Italians spend most of their time in the kitchen, so it makes sense to dedicate more space to it.

I would need a door on the bedroom & a more warm colored & open kitchen area. Otherwise, it's beautiful!

I would have loved to know their reason why they didn't open up the kitchen, if not take down the wall at least create a sort of bar. Is the wall structural? I noticed that it's very thick for an internal wall.

In general, Italians are not fans of open kitchens. They want the mess hidden away while they eat.

If I am not wrong, it must not be okay to have a bathroom directly in the living room according to italian regulations. Anyway it is a very cozy project, even do it is quite sad that here in Italy a couple of two architects should live in such a small house. It is very good for minimalist life and you save money for other things that you want to do in your life, but still our parents were living way better.
