“We’d never seen anything like it - we were totally blown away,” said Simon Siegel when we went to visit him and his wife, Monica, at their 1970s mid-century home in Nottinghamshire four years ago for our My Modern House series. Simon’s words echoed our feelings exactly: we were blown away not only by the brilliance of architect David Shelley’s original design, but also by how Monica and Simon lived in it so sympathetically and stylishly, for that matter - a true one-of-a-kind. And now we’re back.

"... take things slowly..." - this is honestly the best advice I've heard of an Architect.
Especially in today's rushed society.
Absolutely, with time we become to rispect the space we're living in, and understand what it needs.
In almost all cases, there is nothing more green than keeping/restoring the old and nothing less green than filling a landfill with discarded materials and replacing them with something that has travelled 10,000 miles. I really like the house in this video.
My absolute dream home. I waste hours drooling over this kind of thing. I wish more houses were built like this today (perhaps minus the pool) in the UK. Australian architects seem to have nailed the updated Mid Mod approach to create soulful, liveable homes, but here we seem to still favour white boxes. Should take this one as a template, it's gorgeous!
It’s no better in Australia, believe me 😢
I wish modern Australian houses were actually built in the mid-mod style! It would suit the environment here so well !!! but sadly basically every new build has the aesthetic of an ugly grey box same as the UK.
From the floor to the ceiling, I adore this house
Wow, one of the most beautiful house I've seen in this channel! The sad thing is, most people would deemed this kind of architecture as "outdated" and demolished it right away. Good thing that this house found its perfect owners.
Exactly.
i dont think you are right. most ppl will absolutle love to live in it
@@YoGorrionUnfortunately, people can be that arrogant and clueless at the same time. I recently saw a tiktok by an architect named Kevin Harris. One of his favorite works, a wonderfully renovated Wright style home was demolished by the new owners.
Always sad to see great 70s buildings get renovated to be bland and gray or demolished for a 2020s era house flimsier than a mobile home, architecture does not become outdated, it only becomes historical which many 70s buildings are as they hit the 50 year mark
@@circleinforthecube5170 i think its always stupid when people cut down the trees surrounding because they have grown soo big during the years and now are old and maybe ready to fall off for themselves .. and this is sooo risky.
But this architecture has been planned for such view in nature, without this surrounding its nothing.
The absolutely perfect midcentury home! What a stunner. And the perfect owners with a gorgeous little Fiat Cinquecento to live in it!
I agree with their statement of living with the space for a while before rushing out to buy things just to fill it. I'm only 31 but have spent the last 11 years collecting things I truly loved, that still to this day you will find throughout my home and are things I still love. Most of which are thrifted finds, something I am happy has become a more popular to do (thrifting). The two best ways to have a well curated home are thrifting or traveling :)
Thrift stores are great, especially if you prefer late 20th century furniture instead of 2020s minimalist idea trash
Honestly couldn't see enough of this gorgeous house! Speaks to my Soul. Thanks Simon & Monica for sharing, and best of luck in your new situ 🥰
Sometimes we come across perfect relationships... here is a most wonderful home, in an idyllic setting, elevated to a higher plane by having the perfect owners.
The result is breathtaking; I can see why you might have nightmares at the thought of ever having to move!
Thank you for allowing us to share it.
I photograph Simon and Monica house back in the 2000 for Sunday Times, its a great Shelley space and they have some wonderful pieces including a chrome floor light, that Simon stocked in is shop, I'm very please to say, i still have it today, glad you still have the house.
Beautiful! The rich colour of the wood is wonderful!
THIS IS IT!!! I’ve seen so many gorgeous homes on this channel and others but I finally found the literal dream. Amazing!!!
Totally agree with not rushing to fill the space. Feel you have to go through all the seasons once to see how you use spaces, what you are drawn to and how to enhance that.
*WOW - SO NICE* to see they really appreciate it and understand how lucky they are - not just a tech Bro who bought it on a passing whim.
Things like this are of historical importance and need to be looked after by people who appreciate them. Not rip out the interior and "remodel" it.
What a charming, original couple. Their cat! He’s precious. The view from those stunning windows is glorious. Isn’t nature the best? The indoor pool is calling……..
Beatiful home that actually feels cozy and stylish at the same time and beatiful nature around
What a beautiful home ! They seem lovely !
I think this is the most beautiful house I have ever seen 😊
Amazing. It‘s somehow like a time capsule but on the other hand incredibly modern. Thank you for sharing this insight!
What a stunning home! I’ve seen pictures of the sunken sofa area before but to see the rest of the house! The rest is just as stunning!

Amazing home. Such spirit.
omg I thought the video was from the 70s, judging by the car, and the cleanness of the house. But this is now!
Love this! A sunken lounge is the ultimate guilty wishlist 😁

Loved everything about this house! The owners are very sweet and charming. I especially loved the little detail of the car coming in the driveway at the start and driving away from the house as the video ends. Superb video guys!

Lively house. Calm and full of good energy. The surrounding areas are sumply amazing. Green credentials. Quality over quantity. Luxury without ostentation. Felt like a very honest environment.
Stunning. Thanks for sharing
Nice house , love the interior. Don’t like the maintenance headaches the roof would involve.
So dreamy, a midcentury gem!
Spectacular indeed...

Not sad at all- your home is spectacular x
my dream house!
best house ever
this is so so gorgeous
Absolutely stunning
I grew up in the "Mid-Century" era... when you are in your youth you often don't realise the significance of things going on around you; you are more likely to be smitten by the blonde down the street than the house she lives in! 😊
This is FANTASTIC!!
Do these peolple know Gulbenkian, in Lisbon? This reminds me so much of it, i highly recomend a visit. Love it❤
Amazing house, maybe a bit dark inside overall but I still like it especially the surrounding trees and everything, all that green really makes it extra cozy and hidden which I love about houses that they aren't necessarily exposed. I've noticed that's a big thing in Italy, they'll often have walls and low hanging branches basically covering it. Personally, I'd make the interior decor even more '70s-ish with more colours. Now I have to win that lottery, otherwise it'll never happen... 💰
Fabulous. 🙌🏽👌🏽✨
what a dream
Beautiful home😍
love space/ properties with character....reminds me of a house of a Czech director from 70´, in the Czech Republic
Sounds interesting. Where?
The spiral staircase would be a nightmare for me, but I love the pit.
What a stunning, stunning house!
Very very nice surroundings
Love everything about it.
the PERFECT house. the house i dream of. all those little gardens ugh
Such a sweet couple
This is really good design. I hope they upgrade their garden a bit.
This looks like a movie set. Cool.
Lovely
Beautiful house... lots of Ozark's feeling. The series, you know?
Perfect
1:50 Pretzel chair 😍
dream house!
I have a thing for these houses with character. It still has some of the 60s features left and reminds me of the fictional apartment of Don Draper in Mad Men. This could have been my dream home, too. But sadly a lot of these old houses are getting a "modern" update and end up being as bland as new houses. Same with the disease of tearing walls down in old houses and apartments. Why does everyone feels the need to kill rooms with doors, I like to have the possibility to close a door behind me.
I love it I am sad when people destroy home that look too 1970s I am glad this one was saved
I do love a californian mid-century style home
So dreamy ❤
I feel Ive seen this house before in some film production?
Dreamy.
I'd live here, for sure.
love love loveeeee
