    I have a 1907 very small cottage. I embraced the vintage of the home for my decor. Furniture is so big these days, I had to scout around for a long time looking for small, vintage furniture finds. It took months, but I found pieces and then had them reupholstered in fabric that is not so vintage-y to bring them up-to-date, like wide wale corduroys and slubby linens. I also love the cozier moodier colors. I kept all the walls the same color (White Veil) and then chose darker drapes -- in velvets and dark florals. Love it! Thanks for letting me share, Lisa 😀

    I have two apartment sized sofas. They are not as long as regular sofas. I put them in an L-shape, so they mimic a sectional. I floated one sofa between the living room and dining room, so it acts as a divider between the open concept spaces. Then I put a sideboard on the back of the sofa, facing the dining room. It can hold a lot! The top of the sideboard can be used as a buffet, a bar, or just for decor. I found this arrangement to be very useful! 😊

    The last place I was living was a bachelor suite. The back of the couch was against the foot of the bed (which I didn’t like) so I came up with the solution of putting 11“ deep shelves in between that had two different heights. Then I put my house plants on the shelves and it made a beautiful screen.
    It was a double win because the window in my sleeping area was south facing so the plants also liked that spot. And I didn’t block the light from coming into the rest of the suite.

    Having lived in a studio in Manhattan for several years, I'm going to respectfully disagree w/you that you should get a loveseat. I recommend you go with a close to full size couch so you can lie down on it comfortably. It doesn't need to be 8' long, and it certainly doesn't need to be super deep, esp if you're in a long narrow studio, but if you plan on living in your studio for a year or longer, you are very likely going to need to lie down on that couch (or a visiting guest might need to do so).
    I want you to think back to the pandemic for one moment, when you spent so much time in your studio, and you NEEDED a couch you could lie down on comfortably and you cannot lie down on a loveseat comfortably.
    ...but sure, if all you care about is aesthetics and not comfort or functionality get a love seat or be even more impractical and get a loveseat hide-a-bed which is miserably heavy to move and uncomfortable to sit on and sleep on, all at the same time.
    Remember to ask your designer if they have lived in a studio for more than 1 year and how large it was, and how much closet storage it had. Designers are often far more concerned w/aesthetics and far less concerned about how effortlessly your space functions for YOU and your lifestyle.
    Agree wholeheartedly with the verticle space used as storage and bistro table, especially a very tall bistro table which draws the eye up and keeps things narrow. Monochromatic is peaceful no matter what size your space is, too.
    She makes excellent points about what *not* to do in California (because she has lived there a long time and knows how many earthquakes happen daily, even baby ones).

      You are so right.👍🙂 6 foot length BETWEEN the arms, and if you only have a small space, some sofas have as narrow as 3" arms.5" arms are more comfortable if you have room. Good for laying down, either for yourself or a guest. A loveseat is a total waste of money, unless you already have at least one sofa.
      But I just love watching Lisa. So full of positive energy!😊

    • @ShelleybutyoucancallmeShell
      @ShelleybutyoucancallmeShell 4 месяца назад +1

      @@agoogleuser4356 Hi, the only problem with that idea is that when you have company and want to use it as a proper couch, someone will be uncomfortable without having an arm to lean/rest on. Even having very narrow arms is better than no arms at all.
      But yes- definitely get an ottoman! I use an ottoman constantly when not laying down on my sofa.

    • @agoogleuser4356
      @agoogleuser4356 4 месяца назад +3

      @@ShelleybutyoucancallmeShell what I was thinking is that a person can sleep on a couch that would be too short it it had no arm at one end and the ottoman could be moved there to effectively “lengthen the couch”. Otherwise you would need a 6’5” PLUS 2 arms lengths for a couch that could be just OK for a guest/friend.
      Everything takes compromise and you have mentioned a disadvantage of the plan I described.
      Let me think-up a couch-arm end-table. lol. Next time we meet I’ll make a drawing to show you an idea.

      @@agoogleuser4356 🙂 I had to do a lot of thinking when I bought mine. Think up all different scenarios. Best case was people need to be comfortable, but everyone needs to make the decision that's right for them.👋

    Great ideas and have used several in the 10x40 rv park model we call home. Mostly, I love our tiny house. But the one thing I hate is that the entry door opens right into the living room with no room to create any type of foyer. So what I did was paint the door to blend with the walls and mounted a curtain rod high on the door (which has a half glass window). Then, I got full-length semi-sheer curtains to hang on the door that match my curtains on the opposite wall. Not ideal, but it does help a lot to disguise the door, especially in the evening. Tricks the eye.

However, I kept my 3 seater couch and I was so thankful when I was sick and I was so fed up with laying in bed but still needed to rest. Thanks. 567 sq ft. I was gifted a fair-size couch so, it’s on a diagonal. Behind it is a lengthy console table, also on that diagonal. I use one half + dining chair for eating, and the other half + desk-friendly chair, as a desk. The corner TV is placed-you guessed it-on a DIAGONAL♥️, across from the couch. The coffee table is on its side, over at the wall. “In its place”, I sometimes use two same-but-different-height “bar chairs”. Storage is on the same wall, but the opposite side diagonal to the TV, inside my armoires. I have yet to figure out a rug because I so wanted room to do yoga🧘🏽‍♀️🧘🏽‍♀️🧘🏽‍♀️. Cheers!

    Glass blocks are very much in style now. Smoke glass is the most popular. Good option for a room divider. The most important for small places and actually for any places is storage. And storage should be enclosed. Build ins are the best and no open shelves, they created a visual noise.

The hardest part is seating when the weather is bad and everyone is inside. Vertical space is my friend for sure when it comes to storage. A couple of years ago I moved into a 600 square foot apartment. Rather than buying a round dining table, I bought the Piazza by Ligne Roset with two white Jolie chairs. The Piazza has one flat side so you can push it up against the wall when not in use. For the finish I chose the nanomaterial Fenix in white rather than a glass top. Have you thought about talking about materials? For my foyer I chose the Loomy coat rack. And in a few days, I will pick up the Yuragi low table in green marble just as soon as I sell some of my old furniture. But I am not interested in making another purchase until I meet with a designer-if I can find one for such a small project.

    So what do you do to make a room that naturally comes with squared furniture look less boxy? While not being overcrouded?
    And what if you're opting for that oversized couch while not creating to much visual weight that is still suited for elderly people?

    I purchased a Homesteps foreclosure studio in Queens. NY. I have a murphy bed (no room divider needed). Luv the pic of the oversized sofa - LOL😂😂😂 I bought a 7 foot silk Lillian August sofa (flew to the plant in NC - got a $6K sofa for under $1K) - knocked out the middle man. When they delivered the sofa, they ripped the back, had to take the sofa back to NC for repair. I had 2 choices either have somemone take the sofa apart and reassemble it (it is an 8-weigh tie down sofa) or hoist it through the window, having someone take it apart, the integrity of the sofa is not guantreed. I hired day labourers to walk the sofa up 8 flight of stairs. I have a galley kitchen - bought round kitchen table as you suggest in this video (had contractors cut-off 1/3 of table in orderr push the table flush against the wall) and chairs at hotel liquidiation in NYC (I live in Queens, NY) - after watching ts video, will update the chairs (Girl, you are on point!).

    So even though I don’t have a studio apartment I live in a house with I don’t know about 1200 ft.² and I’m remodeling because it’s a late 1950s home and I needed a lot of love when I inherited it I find myself watching more of the smaller rumor, home renovations Because my home fits more of those renovations because let’s face it in the 1950s they didn’t need all the storage for all the unwanted things that we own today so I’m finding myself having to downsize more than I want to but I think I’m ready for some of it anyway But what I like the best is that you show the monochrome coloring on the walls and how it makes it pop I love that because I can always change the pop color without having to redo the whole room. I love the screens that you showed the dividers that black one was really cool not that I made any of that but some good ideas though because I have taken walls down to open up my space to make it feel and look bigger. I have to tell you, Lisa I love that you give me ideas without telling me what I have is wrong or I need to buy something or I need to change it because it’s not the style anymore or shall we say the fade! As always thank you it’s late, but happy Valentine’s Day

    For a children’s room in a cottage, would you recommend trying to make it feel expansive or cosy? I lean towards eclectic colourful… but now wondering if I should make it more one colour - not sure since it’s a children’s room.

    I love these videos. I have a really small space we are re-doing.. at a snails pace. A few things I so often run into I'd love to see you address.... We need furniture for TALL people... ie a couch that my 6'3 guy doesn't have to do a workout squat to sit down and get back up from. Even in large furniture... why is everything built so low?? I love the white cotton fiber overstuffed couch at 6:06. The color, texture and overstuffed design are my favorite. But with pups it would have to be washable and with small male pups fabric to the floor?... one small accident and it is a disaster. Where can it be found - maybe it can be washed..(it's not on your products sidebar). Love the ideas of lots of wall storage, but my personal taste is NO clutter and open shelving not only seems so cluttered in a small space... it also allows all the dust (which we have a lot of in this arid climate) to settle in.... (doors please!).. And dividers!! what a cool look for a small space and a separation for a daybed area or an office spot, especially see through. Thanks so much!!! And I'm so hoping you can address some of these items in the future!!

      I live in a really small house and have a huge sofa that I was able to make work in the space. One thing I did was to hang a huge wall tapestry from the top of the ceiling behind it. For some reason it makes everything work. Good luck. Oh, and the sofa has tons of pillows on it and it still works.

    I always break Rule #1! Sorry Lisa! I Paint put specific areas of my studio keeping in mind architectural details to define each living space. It helps keep the visual feel larger by pulling the eye into specific areas as separates.

      As a lover of vibrant colour, rule #1 always makes me sad - especially when the only option presented for small spaces is all-white-everything, or the complete opposite - dark and moody. I want a yellow livingroom with my whole heart 😭😭
