I don't mean to start any controversy, but fuck if your review wasn't a breath of fresh air with its effort and detail, while going through context as well. Not gonna lie, your review makes some others feel like they're just shilling a product.
You're too kind! I'm honestly surprised anyone found this review! I always feel behind the curve on topics like these. So thank you very much for the vote of confidence.
@ man, even if you're a bit behind the curve (not sure if that's the case), your approach brought a lot of new information that others just didn't have or present. it's nice learning stuff beyond "buttons are nice, screen is dim"! edit: that makes it so your review is valuable even if it is released after others
Subscribed. Happy to see you call out the state of the handheld market right now, and happy to see a BIPOC content creator in this space. I hope you gain more success and will definitely be watching more of your vids.

Thing is, I'm old. I was barely twenty something with the original GBA SP came out. That thing was amazing, it was a Super Nintendo in your pocket, and so much more usable than the GBA SP because it facilitated what such a device is supposed to be. I've felt like every hand held device for gaming since then has been backwards. Don't get me wrong there is a niche for a Steam Deck/Switch/Game Gear sized device, and I have a couple myself, but nothing was as sublimely perfect for the purpose as the GBA SP. You're right it was never was the most comfortable device, at least in my opinion. I'm considering the Miyoo Flip though and this was helpful. I think it may be okay for me but I'll compare it to some other devices.
Great point about the apoligists for retrohandhelds. My favorite apology line is "yeah the os system is messed up and the roms are.messed up, but all you need to do is find, doenload and jnstall CF and then put your own no intro romset along with the bios onto the cf." Laughable.
@@turnbasedtoddy7664 lol...pretty sure that vast...and i do mean vast majority of.people buying these do.not.have the inclination or desire.to.add.roms. therefore no roms.means much smaller.market. much smaller.market means hardly.any.new handhelds.
You should be putting your own roms into it for plenty of reasons. When I buy a chinese console I always treat them as if they came with no games, because they should not come with games. The CFW criticism is absolutely fair though.
Creating a Linux operating system that runs well out-of-the-box is not so easy. Large companies barely (and often don’t) manage to do it well. That’s part of the beauty of Linux that you can put something out there and count on others to refine it. Had they locked down the operating system and prevented others from modifying it, or even refused to seed the hardware to OS developers, then I would consider a boycott.
"Legally grey" seems like a, uh, very generous description for these companies loading up random games and ROMs onto these devices. Like I thought people bought these with the understanding they'd have to provide their own games (however they actually acquire them), but it's wild that they just load games onto these stock and it just... flies? Feels like it's a matter of time before some shit starts because of that.
10:30 eh, I wouldn't really say people are buying this in droves. The A30 didn't quite work out. It keeps "selling out", but that's because Miyoo are doing some very deceiving stuff. The release wasn't even announced and it's clearly under stocked so that you constantly see it as being sold out even though not a lot of people are buying it. Regarding CFWs, I'd rather these companies spend less time making their crappy FWs, I don't think you should ever use Stock, no matter the handheld. They should be providing the proper tools and drivers and unlocked bootloaders and documentation to allow for proper OS to run, however. It is however a bad thing when a device is recommended even when it doesn't have good CFW options available and we are not even sure it will ever have them.
I believe there's room for both. Companies don't have to choose between not shipping FW or only providing the necessary tools for other operating systems to run. They can ship a polished experience, while also embracing the community aspect. Honestly, I'd prefer it just for ease of use if they would do that. I love CFW, but it'd be nice to just buy a product with a tight interface and great stock experience.
I don’t agree with all the points regarding software, but this was one heck of a review. I would love to see the TrimUI Smart Pro get a similar treatment.
The F.O.X.X. M.E.T.R.I.C.S. script is super cool (also I'm happy you managed to backronym'd it into something that actually describes what it does)! 3W on idle for this level of a handheld is definitely concerning - and since most CFW teams seem to be wary of porting their stuff over to this whole mess, it's gonna be a hard sell. Miyoo caught lightning in a bottle twice with the Miyoo Mini and Mini Plus, but an overwhelming majority of that success was due to OnionOS coming in and saving the day. The A30 was them regressing to their norm (again saved by CFW), and the Flip seems like their norm. Disappointing.
I'm so happy someone else appreciates the acronym!! I can't tell you how LONG it took to come up with that. I almost scrapped that entire segment lol. But yes. Miyoo's trajectory has been really disappointing. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but I really wish they had knocked the Flip out of the park. Everything was lining up for them to be successful, but they had to rush it out carelessly. You know what the saddest part is? i think their next launch will do even better sales wise. I think the wider handheld community will sort of shrug and sweep this one under the rug, and still insta-support whatever they do next.
Truth be told, I need to do more 2x testing, but the games I like to play worked well and had no performance issues. Threads of Fate, Driver, Dino Crisis, and Klonoa all scale well, so it seems to me there's definitively some headroom there.

Thank you very much ! I already have an odin 2, and I had a retroid pocket 2+ that had some plastic issues (I think that RP2+ have more power than this Miyoo Flip), so I'm thinking about buying this one especially for PS1 gaming, but only if i can do some enhancement. I coult do 2x and some ps1 enhancement in the RP2+ but in some games it wasn't good enough, but that was 2 or 3 years ago with an old version of emulator. I think that now we have chances to make better ps1 performance with less power thank to new versions of duckstation. A little precision : on RP2+ all dreamcast games play fullspeed 60 FPS without any issue, but i don't really like DC games unfortunately, it's a useless option for me.

It’s illegal to sell it with games anyway. Eventually they will crack down hard and you will have to figure out how to do all that stuff anyway
