As someone who suffered through our family owning a new Class C motorhome for about 15 years, the two best days of owning something like this is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. They're all built with the structural rigidity of a balsa wood airplane from the dollar store and they're about as well sealed from water as a plain sponge. The engineering that goes into these shouldn't be called engineering - it's more like the best work they could muster from high school kids in a drafting class that aren't qualified to design the kitchen cabinets they were working on - and someone converted those plans to put wheels on it.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode! It’s crazy to think that this RV was built only 10 years ago and needs so much work ! Just imagine the damages on a rig that was 40+ years old 💀 like mine ! Its a labor of love as you’ll come to find out . Welcome to the RUclips RV community Jason !

Thank you for the warm welcome and your generous compliment !
As I’ve been working on the RV I’ve been so surprised by its construction. I originally thought the slide out floors were damaged because of the way the underside is designed. However I found the moisture was coming from the roof of the slide outs coming down to the floor. Making sure the RV is totally level front to back and side to side is paramount as it helps the water run off correctly …. Maintenance is key as well.

What I like about RV's and Motor Homes is you actually own it and no one can take it from you. Like quarterly extortion (Taxes) Payments to keep living in the Home you thought was yours. They may be cheap and flimsy, but its yours! You got an awesome deal! I owned a 20' 1958 duel axle that was about to be stripped and scrapped, and the guy let me have for the $300 I had in my pocket. The only thing wrong with it was no hot water in the kitchen. I lived in it for 3 yrs, and I loved it!

I have come up from tent camping in college, to a pop-up camper and last year my family purchased a 5th wheel. We enjoy going to state parks, and also volunteer and historical/antique steam engine shows. It's so nice to spend the day outside, doing whatever and being able to come in, shower, eat a meal and sleep without bugs. Our pop-up was great, even with two dogs until we had kids, so our early spring or late fall camping was cut short due to colder weather (We're in MN) Now, we were camping into late october, and can be assured our early May trip will be just fine with our heat. Also - Not having to walk to the camp bathroom at 2am because you had that extra adult beverage is certainly a bonus! Nice and quiet with all hardsides, and plenty of space for my wife and I, plus two kids. The outdoor bar and Blackstone grill don't hurt :) -- Fixed up, you've got a heck of a deal there, especially closing in on 40' and 4 slides. It may not have all the tech features of a new model, but that's less to go wrong. (I will admit, I love our auto-level feature tho) I can touch a button and tend to the kids, other setup (cold beer) etc.

Nice project! I enjoy of watching rebuild content. I bought two years ago a used motor-home and I've been fixing it along the way. I totally amazed how low-quality materials they use in US to build those RVs. My Concorde, an European brand, has sandwich walls and floors. Two layers of aluminum sheets and an 2½ inch PU foam insulation in between. I suggest you to use some composite material to replace those slide-out floors. Something that does not absorb moisture.

They make and sell sub floor replacement sections. They are angle cut at one end. (The end the slides into the coach) and thicker then. They don’t cost a lot of money either. I’m a master certified rv technician, I replaced many of slide out floors. It’s fairly easy to do. You will have to slide the slide all the way out and then hyper extend it another 6-10” in order replace it. If you need any advice on how to do it feel free to ask. They are fairly easier to maintain and repair.

I will suggest when you replace the subfloor, when you put the new subfloor in , there is a water barrier sealer you can buy at Home Depot , it’s the same sealer you would use when installing tile on a wooden subfloor on top of the cement backer board ..
I have replaced all the water damaged subfloor and used that sealer and covered it 100% all the way around , inside and out and particularly the edges and 20 years later it’s still holding ..
Roofing …. Try to find some
VULKEM 640 , it’s pricey BUT once you seal all the roof seams , joints, cracks the damn thing will be virtually leak proof .. it’s pricey and messy but it’s on the roof , you’ll never see it

My brother and I have virtually the same RV you have. We have a Montana which is just a step below yours. The AC unit will probably run you around 2 grand if it needs replaced. You mentioned replacing the fridge with a straight 12 volt version. Personally, I wouldn't do that. The fridge will run on 12 volt power but will also run on gas as well. That way, you can run it on the gas while your driving to your destination and your fridge is nice and cold when you get there.

You can run the 12volt fridge while driving and not have to worry going through a tunnel or a fuel stop. The 12volt fridge is way colder than a gas/electric.

@@jellybean13 your batteries should stay charged if you are driving. I know when we had our C I had a larger alternator installed that kepy our batteries charged no problem. I never liked driving with the propane on just in case of a accident or when stopping for fuel etc. Just easier to run on 12 volt..

We have a Grand Design 5th wheel with the bunk house because we have 3 kids. We love it. It's like towing a vacation house with you. Gives you the ability to travel with more things, cook meals, and other great perks. Camp grounds are cheaper than a hotel that would be as nice as our trailer. Boondocking is even cheaper. We use the trailer as a base camp to explore the area from. We do not generally hang out in the trailer. We have a YT channel chronicling our journeys and the trailer itself. Arrrventure Time.

Hey J, First off its a 5th wheel not a motor home like you keep referring to it as. You clearly don't have a clue what your looking at. You need someone like me that has been using one and repairing them for 30+ years. That way, at least you will get the terminology correct. The truth is there just is not that much to them. I think people have no idea how to fix them so they get a bad reputation.
I just replaced two slides that were rotted. Best way is to go with uni-strut to the ground. Screw it into the outside of the slide on the side of the slide. That will hold it up while you take the floor out.
You need to go to the specialty wood store and get some sheets of 1" birch plywood. Then go to the flooring warehouse, (Yes flooring warehouse distributor) There you get 1/4" plastic that you glue to the birch plywood. Then you install the finished plywood and plastic. The plastic will keep the water from coming in on the bottom. I hope this helps and gives you some Ideas on how to repair the floor slides. Good luck with it..
