Drag force goes up exponentially with speed. In the formula to calculate drag force, velocity is squared. That is why a lot of commercial fleets monitor drivers' speeds and/or speed govern their trucks.
When I was a technician working on the Albertsons fleet in Portland Oregon. We had to set the trucks for 330hp 400 on the hills @ 57mph top speed 62mph for 30 sec to pass and idle no longer then 1 min.
More accurately it doesn't go up 'exponentially" it goes up with the square of the wind speed. That's no where near as fast as "exponentially" but it's still seriously wallet thrashing! My 4 cylinder Camry gets about 30 mpg at 70 but at 90 you can see the fuel gauge dropping.🤪

I was driving a Humvee ambulance on I-95, topped out at 57 mph in the right lane when a truck towing another one backwards passed me. It got about 50 feet past me and that top spoiler(?) ripped off and flew into my lane. Super thankful there was a brush guard on that vehicle because I nailed it and fiberglass exploded everywhere. I pulled over to check for damage and a guy that was about a hundred yards behind me stopped to check and said from back there it looked like I’d run over a giant igloo cooler. Very minor damage, but the truck never stopped.
Years ago I was following a ute (Australia) or pickup (USA) carrying a bunch of builder's tools and stuff, with a fiberglass bathtub on top held down by almost nothing. The guy went a bit faster and the bathtub caught the wind and flew off the back. I almost missed it, put a small dent in the corner of the bumper and a much bigger dent in the bath.
Back when you only needed 10 hours off in a 24 hour period was a lot safer than this 10 hour all at once. We often drove a few hours and then rested a few hours then all over again without getting sleepy. Now driving 11 hours at once is much more dangerous. Love the videos. Nice truck for sure. I am building me and old POS just to help the neighbors out from time to time. The bungy cords when the light fell off were probably bouncing up and down pretty good hook on the strap where when hooked on something solid, they hold fine. I do like the method you are using now much better. good idea.

Nicely done Casey. The worst dragging load I ever had was a 10,000 pound big crane boom. It was just a lot of pipes, a skeleton boom. As soon as I went over 45 MpH, it dragged like a 50,000 lbs. load just because of the wind turbulence around all those pipes.
Casey, some people might not have noticed this, but I did. That driver is really going to appreciate you remembering to take his dolly off his truck and strap it to the 2nd one. Great job!

Great point out on the mpg 55 vs 60. The only thing you gain is about 10 minutes on a 2 hour trip lol Safer speed, better fuel economy and less DEF. Figured this out years ago in my super C Freightliner motorhome.
I don't want to watch towing videos other than yours. The same with rock crawling other than with Trail Mater and Matt's off-road recovery. I like how you explain the process as you think it, like an unfiltered thought process. Not looking to impress us, just letting us know what you are thinking. "You never said you were good at this.", is a very humble and healthy way to approach life. I always wanted to drive a tow truck when i was younger. Life went a different direction but always thought it would be a good job to have. Now i just watch it on RUclips.
Trucks aerodynamics certainly weren't meant to be pulled in the opposite direction from which they were designed to be operated. I drove OTR from 1988 to 2009 and during that time drove our wrecker to rescue our broken trucks. We always pulled trucks backwards so we wouldn't have to pull the axles out. The mirrors we always folded in so the wind wouldn't tear them apart and the side fairings we always strapped them together to keep them from ripping apart from the force of the wind. I always enjoyed doing our wrecker runs (we had a lot of them lol) we're based out of southwest Tennessee and I've done runs as far as Idaho and Arizona either bringing a truck to a broke down driver and bringing his truck back or dead heading to pick up either abandoned or broken down truck.
Folding the mirrors in is a risky move. It will prevent the covers from coming off, but if the wind catches them enough to fold them out at speed you will see some serious damage
I love watching you do what you do! It takes this old girl back to a time when I drove to California every week and back to Missouri to haul dry food. An adventure every week. Keep being real, it's awesome how the armchair jockeys think they're experts but you have to think on your feet.
We always pulled them forward. It doesn't take that long to disconnect the driveshaft. Yeah I didn't like doing it but I like it better than the drag and swaying. We usually had to pull them further than you seem to. I used to work for a company that retrieved their own broken down trucks. Seemed like all of them broke down at least 600 plus miles away.
I was one of those who mentioned the possibility of carabiners for your light bar and I'm glad to see it worked. It just seems more secure since the ends aren't open. Great video because you also teach. Learning about the power factor and how just 5 mph makes a huge difference is something I learned in my older under-powered SUV. At 65-70 mph it loses 4 MPG compared to 60 mph, so your lesson applies to big rigs and little rigs, too.

Data point, most class 8 trucks are designed to pull the max load of 80,000 lbs at a max of 65 mph. For the optimal service life of tires, bearings and drive train. Slower speeds increase the service life of the components, while faster speeds exponentially decrease service life. The harder you hammer the GO pedal, the faster you will be buying fuel, tires, wheel bearings, u-joints etc. Wanna go fast, How much money you got !!! 😂 Love the channel and content, thank you Casey for sharing !! Remember when towing another vehicle with smaller wheels, the smaller wheels are rotating faster than the tow rigs. I bet people have replaced more camper trailer wheel bearings than worn out tires.
Casey, it was an newer international, so next time look at the switches on your right and you should see one that says 5th wheel unlock. With the truck running, parking brake on , hold the switch down until you get a solid tone. You should hear a”chunk” behind you. Then push the parking brake and start to drive foward . Also in that bank of switches you should see a suspension dump. Hit it to lower the suspension. And if you have to pull the handle manually pull out and the pull it towards the front and let go, it has a lock there.
Ratchet straps and bungee cords are a lifesaver when working alone. Its amazing what you can do. Oh, and falling wedges for small adjustments to line up things.

Casey , Western Star turn signals and brake lights operate this way for the Canadian market . Remove the turn signal switch , remove cover plates . At the bottom of the turn signal switch you will clearly see a red jumper wire , cut it and your lights will properly operate . This operation will take 15 minutes .

Many years ago I read that UPS was exploring diesel-electric for their OTR and delivery vehicles. I thought it was a great idea, but never heard anything more about it. I love what Edison Motors is doing especially the ease of working on there trucks.

Wait until you get a 5th wheel plate that has TWO release levers..... and neither one of them wants to move for you. l only saw it once. It was on a belly dump tractor. Thankfully the company mechanic was on scene when I was getting hooked up. Even he struggled with it. lol. There is ALWAYS something new to deal with in the towing industry.

Interesting observations on speed versus fuel consumption. .As a long time EV driver I know how 5mph can make a big difference to range even in something as powerful and aerodynamic as my Tesla Model S. Cruising at 70mph (UK) uses about 15% more electrons than doing 65mph. .Keep up the great vids.
I have two phones... Last week I had to back up to a trailer by myself. Opened a FaceTime connection and set one of my phones on the back bumper, other one on the dash. It worked great except right is left and left is right.
Great to see carabiners on the light bar, those look a lot like the ones I have on key rings tho, hope you checked they have a decent rating and they are not the chinesium ones we get here
They look like harbor freight carabiners, and you definitely shouldn't climb with them, but they're plenty strong enough to make the bungee cords the weakest point of the setup
Dude, you messed up! Everyone knows the purple bungees with carabiners are way better than the yellow ones! And all the carabiners need to be pointed north (unless you're in the southern hemisphere, where they have to be pointed east). Geeze, what a newb! I was laughing at Casey yelling at the truck for constantly beeping, turning itself off, etc. My new company truck (Cascadia) does all kinds of stupid stuff like that and I’m always yelling at it.
I think it was because you backed into it with the take the pressure off the king pin idea. thats what makes the clamp lock sir, so thats why the lock wouldn't stay open! 😁

I would always fold those mirrors in so I wouldn't have to worry about the caps blowing off....used to tow trucks all over Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma...
I keep my ratchet straps lubed up with dry lube. It helps alot toward them freezing up ans sticking. In winter i coat the ratchet parts with a wet lube. It helps keep ice out of the gearing
That's the perfect location to have work lights on the truck. Nobody you feel like you will blind. It's always better to have them and use your brain to determine if you will bother others. Put a switch on them and be selective.

With the truck running, parking brake on , hold the switch down until you get a solid tone. You should hear a”chunk” behind you. Then push the parking brake and start to drive foward . Also in that bank of switches you should see a suspension dump. Hit it to lower the suspension. And if you have to pull the handle manually pull out and the pull it towards the front and let go, it has a lock there.
Yes to the above answer about 5th wheel unlocks. Most all trucks have air 5th wheel unlocks. Safety! Oh, and workman's comp. Shoulder and back issues.
I haven't really ran a brand-new truck on a job. But my trucks that have "fifth wheel unlock" switch are for the ones that have sliding plate

Casey , Western Star turn signals and brake lights operate this way for the Canadian market . Remove the turn signal switch , remove cover plates . At the bottom of the turn signal switch you will clearly see a red jumper wire , cut it and your lights will properly operate . This operation will take 15 minutes .

Many years ago I read that UPS was exploring diesel-electric for their OTR and delivery vehicles. I thought it was a great idea, but never heard anything more about it. I love what Edison Motors is doing especially the ease of working on there trucks.

I love that you have such a strong trucking background, Casey. I also really appreciate how you explain everything as you do it. I'll never be a tow truck guy, But youve really made me appreciate them, and you, alot more. As a trucker, I consider them my brothers, and do what I can to protect them when I see them. The work you guys do is so critical, and there is nothing better, when youre stranded, than seeing that tow truck coming.

Wait until you get a 5th wheel plate that has TWO release levers..... and neither one of them wants to move for you. l only saw it once. It was on a belly dump tractor. Thankfully the company mechanic was on scene when I was getting hooked up. Even he struggled with it. lol. There is ALWAYS something new to deal with in the towing industry.

Interesting observations on speed versus fuel consumption. .As a long time EV driver I know how 5mph can make a big difference to range even in something as powerful and aerodynamic as my Tesla Model S. Cruising at 70mph (UK) uses about 15% more electrons than doing 65mph. .Keep up the great vids.

I have two phones... Last week I had to back up to a trailer by myself. Opened a FaceTime connection and set one of my phones on the back bumper, other one on the dash. It worked great except right is left and left is right.
Great to see carabiners on the light bar, those look a lot like the ones I have on key rings tho, hope you checked they have a decent rating and they are not the chinesium ones we get here
They look like harbor freight carabiners, and you definitely shouldn't climb with them, but they're plenty strong enough to make the bungee cords the weakest point of the setup

Dude, you messed up! Everyone knows the purple bungees with carabiners are way better than the yellow ones! And all the carabiners need to be pointed north (unless you're in the southern hemisphere, where they have to be pointed east). Geeze, what a newb! Where'd you learn truck drivering? 🤣

I was laughing at Casey yelling at the truck for constantly beeping, turning itself off, etc. My new company truck (Cascadia) does all kinds of stupid stuff like that and I’m always yelling at it.
I think it was because you backed into it with the take the pressure off the king pin idea. thats what makes the clamp lock sir, so thats why the lock wouldn't stay open! 😁

I keep my ratchet straps lubed up with dry lube. It helps alot toward them freezing up ans sticking. In winter i coat the ratchet parts with a wet lube. It helps keep ice out of the gearing

Interesting, you brought the seat up to support the string wheel. This doesn't seem very common but reasonably affective.
There have been guys who cranked the straps so tight that they broke the tilt latch in the column.
Honestly I was impressed how you used a ratchet strap to hold the light bar. Sad it failed. But was a simple elegant solution.

That's the perfect location to have work lights on the truck. Nobody you feel like you will blind. It's always better to have them and use your brain to determine if you will bother others. Put a switch on them and be selective.

Casey i love watching your videos ive only been towing for a local auto auction for about 15 months. I've learned so much from your channel even tho I'm just in a rollback wrecker....... keep up the great videos man... 👍 here even tho im not 100 % convinced about your view about lighting on the side of the road. I think people will ALWAYS be distracted no matter what or how many light you have or don't have. People just don't pay attention. MUCH respect casey cant wait for the next video...
