I had an aunt that really fell in love with this game. She adored it so much she got me back interested in Shadowgate. We lost her to cancer 8 years ago. *raises a bottle* For Tod Zipnick and my aunt, I hope you both are resting peacefully.
You had to have man, I figured this crap out with my pot smoking Crips on a rental age 9, 6 hours. This game is so safe, he may as well made a 1 - 20 tutorial Tetris.
Shadowgate's graphics were mind-bending to see on NES back then! Great game, and one that was small enough that you could actually discover the correct path and actions to take without reading a guide. Plus, the music has to be some of the best on the NES, it really creates a vibe.
I agree the music is awesome and the move screen sound is icing on that cake. I didnt beat it when it came out but finished it in my teens. Great game and hearing the music makes me want to play again haha.
It's funny how true your comment is. Feel lucky to have seen the transition from vector graphics to photo realistic. I beat Shadowgate every 10 years, long enough to forget all the solutions on the next playthrough.
I didn't know that you could select the lit torch as a usable item, so I made all of ten minutes of progress in the game and was then stuck forever. What a pity that my adventure came to a sudden and tragic end. At least I could amuse myself by using the sword to commit suicide.
This was a pleasant surprise. A video not on guiding through a game but about a secret in the game and what does it do... a guide to the secret. That was good. Well done!
I LOVE Shadowgate. Used to watch my dad play it as a little kid and get scared of the Grim Reaper. Picked it up myself a few years later and loved playing through it. Cheers to such a great game. That was good.
While it isn’t exactly the same you may like to check out the Grahfmetal point and click games on PC, they even made an unofficial prequel to Uninvited that is very much inspired by the NES Kemco games like Shadowgate.
Watch a regular playthrough first then you can get this guy's take on it later. It won't spoil the game. I'm very familiar with these games but I still like watching multiple reviews about them regardless.
Shadowgate was one of my favorite games on the NES and one that I played for hours on end. I don't think I ever actually beat it, but it was fun to play and one I remember fondly. Learning about the secret room behind the waterfall in the Mac Version and the tribute to Tod Zipnick was a real treat and I would love to see more videos like this. Taking the time to interview people involved in the development of classic games and learn some of the behind-the-scenes trivia would be a welcome addition to the channel, in my opinion. Thank you for this wonderfully infomative video and stay safe out there!
Oh wow. You lucky, lucky dude! This was a awesome video cos I had NO idea about this at all!!! Also, a very touching tribute to Todd Zipnick. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, and that now Todd can be remembered by more people than ever. I wish I could give more than 1 like tbh, cos stuff like this is always aweomse to come across.
I cannot start my Saturday without watching UCBVG! ever since I found this channel late last year, I've made it a point to be front and center of my TV every single Saturday. Thank You for your content
Man, that soundtrack really just hits me in the nostalgia feels. RIP Zip. You made my childhood better by contributing your talents into the world! Thank you, Dave, for the interview. That was cool insight into the world of the game development of my childhood. 10/10
I loved this episode, even when is not a full walkthrough, is always interesting to know these details that define the history of video games, I hope you can do more like them along the walkthroughs.
One of my favorite parts of your uploads is the history section you go through near the beginning of each one - this video was all of that and more. Loved it!
You are very good at this. I look forward to these episodes every week. The combination of a thoughtful tribute, plus the end theme to StarTropics, plus two sweet dogs playing at the beach actually made me tear up. StarTropics is one of my all time favorite games, and you did that end theme song so right with this tribute. I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
My first encounter with Shadowgate was a random rental at a Smiths with two other friends, back when you could rent video games. We stayed up all night trying to figure out all the puzzles. A fantastic game, with a 10 out of 10 for atmosphere.
1:54 - In Photoshop, use Edit > Layer > Distort on the Shadowgate screenshot later, take each corner of the screenshot and drag it to the appropriate corner of the Mac monitor. Then try changing the blend mode from “Normal” to “Overlay” on the screenshot layer, to integrate it seamlessly into the Mac image. This is my unsolicited Photoshop advise for making realistic screenshot+monitor mock-ups. I don’t know what the commands would be if one is using GIMP instead.
This was a really nice treat to learn something new about a long time fave. This channel gets better every day somehow, it's truly a RUclips hidden gem! Props for pulling the strings to get that interview... I got very emotional at the end for someone I didn't even know!
the music, the atmosphere....When I was 8 I knew this game was special. I couldn't find it to buy as a kid but I rented it dozens of times repeatedly. I beat it so many times but would come back just for the music and the cool interface. To this day, the music and visual awakens something in me. I LOVE this game and this channel just gave me nostalgia like crazy for this and many more, but definitely this one.
Oh man...I used to "speed run" shadowgate on the NES before speed running was really a thing. Probably 1990 or 91. Every song abd sound from that game is permanently in my brain.
This is so wholesome and a breath of fresh air. This channel has easily become my favorite. No matter what game is featured or if I have played it or watching you beat it is my introduction to said game, I am always surprised and excited when I get the upload notification. Thank you!
What an absolute treat of a video. This is so great. I just watched your Shadowgate and Maniac Mansion videos in the past week, so youtube must've recommended me this today. I am so grateful. I love your channel, I find your voice and the video's lengths strangely comforting and soothing for some reason. Great job again, please keep it up.
That was wonderful. These kind of informations are the most interessting. It is great, that Dave Marsh took the time for the interview. Thank you so much for this video. 😊
I always love your brief history on the game before you show us how we can beat them. Having a full-fledged, well produced history of a game is just as amazing. PLEASE do more of these! If anything these would be great for the weeks where you need more time for the longer games. Great work again!
LOVE Shadowgate. This was an excellent special episode! It's cool to know you can get past the rock slide in the original version. Great interview and great info!
It's really nice to see developers will sit down and take the time to talk about creations people loved and you can tell it means a lot to them to have their projects so fondly remembered. Great episode and a great way to throw a curve ball of freshness into already entertaining content!
Thanks to Dave for coming onto this episode. Shame Todd is no longer with us, Deja vu remains one of my favorite NES games. The plot, the gameplay, the graphics and design were, and still are, captivating to me. This story of a detective who can't remember his past solving the mystery surrounding him. Love me a good gumshoe story.
This was a really fun break from the usual content. I hope you get a chance to talk to more creators because you clearly have a passion for what you do.
Such an incredible video which proves why so many love this channel. All the extra effort going above and beyond to find out all there is about a game and its secrets. RIP Tod Zipnick.
This was my favorite game! I wrote to the company and they sent me a poster! Several friends and I passed this game and the poster around many times! One of my best high school memories is playing this game! Thank you for your video it was amazing!
I got my NES out of the closet the other day and this was one of the first games I pulled out. It was always one of my favorite titles to play. That song always just brings up so many memories. This was was a cool video. Love your playthroughs, but content like this is always a nice change of pace. The stories that these designers have from back in the day need to be chronicled.
Gruz was diving into this exact topic recently, and damn if it's not fascinating. One of my favorite games ever and it STILL holds some secrets. Also, doggo has a mini-me!
God this is an amazing get. THANK YOU for securing this interview!!! This video is priceless, with info that literally didn't exist on the internet prior to this. If you ever make a Patreon with extra videos (maybe the uncut interview) I would absolutely pounce on this!
Firstly, I love your channel. I tune into every upload and love how knowledgeable you are when it comes to the games. Particularly how you always take the time to accurately name all the characters/enemies. Secondly, Shadowgate is easily my favourite game of all time! I’ve got every iteration, from Beyond to the Staff of Ages. Now I’m just patiently waiting for the board game release! Dave Marsh is an awesome dude who kindly sent me a signed art book randomly! Forever thankful for that. Easily my favourite video you’ve put out so far! Thank you!
I've greatly enjoyed all your videos, and this one has been particularly memorable for me. There's something so atmospheric, moody, and evocative about the NES shadowgate music, having owned the game as a kid, The music never fails to bring me back to that place... That unique headspace. It was the very first dungeon crawler I ever played, and initiated my lifelong love of this sort of point and click adventure. Keep up the Great work!
I absolutely loved this game as an adolescent teenager! Something really crazy that happened to my friend. He went on vacation to Disney World for a week. When he got back home and popped Shadowgate into his Nintendo he discovered the game had somehow "beaten" itself.
Thank you so much for this special episode! Shadowgate is one of my favorite games, and it's always awesome to find out more about it... Specially something that helps solve a mystery that really puzzled me when I was a kid. That landslide near the waterfall always got me wondering what could be behind it...
This is like the art gallery in uninvited You should play that game sometime too man it’s my favorite Mac venture. It’s amazing you got one of the devs to give these backstory.
Hot damn!!! I literally led our BECMI D&D group through Castle Shadowgate in February. Nutshell, they TPK’d during the module Queens Harvest (Leroy Jenkins the castle) and I wanted their new characters to advance quickly and with some powerful magic items - Staff of Ages and Horn of Blasting among others. I never had any idea that Shadowgate was rooted in D&D. Makes it all the more special. This is awesome!
I absolutely love your regular shows. You're literally my favorite RUclipsr, and so I hope you have a long and fulfilling career doing this. But...I do like the occasional change of pace. Shadowgate was one of my favorite games growing up, and I still look back on it fondly, so breaking up the flow in order to do a "deeper" dive into this legendary game really helps to set you apart and above. I appreciate your efforts to go the extra mile.
I love the playthroughs, but let's be honest: the first 5 minutes of these where the guy and the golden retriever go over the history of the game are by far the best parts!
Been waiting for this one for years. Well done. We had to call the hot line number in the manual to figure out how to get the key for the front door, after that it was mind twisting deaths.
Thank you for this, as a fan of your channel from the beginning, these videos are absolutely welcome and very much appreciated and enjoyed. As much as I love the walkthroughs, it's the in-depth history and lore at the beginning I get most excited for. Please make more of these!
Amazing video. I loved Shadow Gate as a kid and always wondered about the water fall stairs, the high room with the breakable platform and the well door. Nice to learn about the Waterfall door.
Super cool dude! I loved this game on the NES when I was 10 years old. Creepy music, scary graphics, but my best friend an I LOVED it! This was a nice surprise to see in my feed. Already watched your original walkthrough for Shadowgate. Loved that too! Keep 'em coming... we love ya!
I had an aunt that really fell in love with this game. She adored it so much she got me back interested in Shadowgate. We lost her to cancer 8 years ago. *raises a bottle* For Tod Zipnick and my aunt, I hope you both are resting peacefully.
Shadowgate has such a memorable soundtrack. It's instantly recognizable. A sure sign that it's an epic OST.
The soundtrack is amazing.
shadowgate and castlevania yep
I have very fond memories of playing this game on NES. My mother sitting to the side trying to help me solve the puzzles.
Same but with my dad
I couldn't play or watch lol I was like 4 or 5 but I also remember my mom playing this.
You had to have man, I figured this crap out with my pot smoking Crips on a rental age 9, 6 hours. This game is so safe, he may as well made a 1 - 20 tutorial Tetris.
Thats awesome.
My brother and our ma used to play Tomb Raider, she loved doing the puzzle stuff with us. Always I will cherish those days.
As a kid, it felt like these games were handed down from on high. I love hearing from the people that made these old games.
Shadowgate's graphics were mind-bending to see on NES back then! Great game, and one that was small enough that you could actually discover the correct path and actions to take without reading a guide. Plus, the music has to be some of the best on the NES, it really creates a vibe.

Fake news. No one who grew up with the NES Shadowgate would EVER describe something as "a vibe"
Most slept on Videogame channel on RUclips! Great video as always..
I sleep to it most nights. The voice is just soothing somehow. (I know that's not what you meant) Also, not a dig. I love this channel 🙂
@@jebussonofgob it's his cadence. It's just so soothing
Most slept with. Ha!
This was a pleasant surprise. A video not on guiding through a game but about a secret in the game and what does it do... a guide to the secret. That was good. Well done!
Omg I played this in computer class in elementary school!!! Loved Shadowgate!
I LOVE Shadowgate. Used to watch my dad play it as a little kid and get scared of the Grim Reaper. Picked it up myself a few years later and loved playing through it. Cheers to such a great game. That was good.
I miss these types of games. Would love to see them make a next-gen comeback.
they had a mini resurgence in the DS era w/ the Ace Attorney, Hotel Dusk games and their clones...if you haven't played those, I highly suggest them.
While it isn’t exactly the same you may like to check out the Grahfmetal point and click games on PC, they even made an unofficial prequel to Uninvited that is very much inspired by the NES Kemco games like Shadowgate.
They kick-started a remake, it's on Steam and the App Store on the iPad.
They made a few more shadowgates. I think one was on the n64 and the other rather recently on pc......but if i remember correctly both were flops.
You played the remastered yet ?
Eagerly awaiting for when you tackle Uninvited, i actually dont know anything about that one other than it exists.
It's a fantastic game, the best of the three Kemco NES games. I'd highly playing it while you wait for him to cover it on the channel!
He'll probably do it for October since it's on the SKURRY side.
Watch a regular playthrough first then you can get this guy's take on it later. It won't spoil the game. I'm very familiar with these games but I still like watching multiple reviews about them regardless.

I FUCKING LOVE SHADOW GATE

ruclips.net/video/OYmqVipkD4U/видео.html that's the full walkthrough he already did lol
Pretty sure he has a separate video with the full walkthrough if you are interested.
Whoa! This is beyond awesome. You rock, UCBVG. I support future episodes like this!!
Here's to Tod Zipnick. 🥂
My favorite part of your videos are the history and back stories of the games, please keep up more of this content!
How do you keep cranking out these high quality videos week after week? You are a god.
I hope Dave and the team knows how many hours of adventure and joy that game gave me throughout the years. And frustration of course lol
The ending segment is magnificent :) :D no spoilers
One of my favorite parts of your uploads is the history section you go through near the beginning of each one - this video was all of that and more. Loved it!

I loved Shadowgate on my Amiga, have it on PC via Steam now. Great game. Could never finish it without a walkthru.
My first encounter with Shadowgate was a random rental at a Smiths with two other friends, back when you could rent video games. We stayed up all night trying to figure out all the puzzles. A fantastic game, with a 10 out of 10 for atmosphere.
This channel is so underrated
WOOOOW...this is amazing! I'm practically in tears. I had no idea you could bring this kind of content to us--and what an amazing memory trip!

I love this background information and interviews with people who were there making it. Great work. Love the channel!
Shadow gate is a game I heard very true to my heart and got me into adventure games. The new version is also fantastic
Yes, Yes, Thank you! This is one of my number one games on the NES, in a shoebox next to the TV!
So awesome to finally know what's behind those rocks!

This was a game my dad and i played all night long. Good memories!!
Wow! What a fascinating story. Well done as always.
My friend, Chris, developed a tabletop role play game based on Shadowgate. It goes on sale in October.
I've been in touch with Chris! He reached out to me, and sent pictures of the game - it looks really cool!
I’m happy to hear that. They’ve put in a lot of good work.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I still plan on getting you a review copy btw. I think you’ll like it
God I love this man's content. What a treasure....

This game makes me feel like I'm gaming in the Clinton years
This channel needs more love
Great video, Nice idea for a series of short, for a UCBVG video at least.
Deja Vu and The Uninvited were also great games as well in this line my personal favorite was always The Uninvited
OMG... my absolute most favorite game of all time. I never expected a video like this!!
I love Shadowgate and Deja Vu!. I rented them all the time, and years later I could buy the NES cartridges and I still play them from time to time.
Thanks to Dave for coming onto this episode. Shame Todd is no longer with us, Deja vu remains one of my favorite NES games. The plot, the gameplay, the graphics and design were, and still are, captivating to me.

Thank you for this awesome documentary short video. I never knew about this and I love Shadowgate game. I still do.
This channel is Amazing. UCBVG continues to level up.
I still play these to this day. All of them. I even won a copy of the remade Shadowgate a while back, first and only thing I ever won lol.
I got my NES out of the closet the other day and this was one of the first games I pulled out. It was always one of my favorite titles to play. That song always just brings up so many memories.

Saw this pop up in my recommended and automatically said oh cool! Love this channel. Happy Saturday all!
I rented this cartridge so many times I could have bought it three times over. 🤦♂️😅🍻
This game is special to me. My original major friends group, we used to play this on both NES and Mac. It was awesome dying and trying through it
Really a great video and wonderful to see and hear someone who worked on the game share stories.
I'm glad you chose to talk about this! I knew it wasn't in the original video so it's wonderful you decided to cover it!
Loved this game as a kid. Still one of my favorite games all around.
This video is really good! Thank you so much. I loved these games on my Mac Plus.
This was wonderful!
