The Utah Jazz remain one of the most intriguing teams of the NBA offseason. Most fans expected them to trade Lauri Markkanen but he re-signed with Utah on a 5-year deal. The Golden State Warriors reportedly attempted to land Markkanen by sending core players Brandin Podziemski and Jonathan Kuminga. The Spurs also apparently tried to trade with the Jazz to pair Markkanen with Victor Wembanyama. But what are the chances Markkanen stays with Utah for the long haul while the team potentially lands Cooper Flagg in next year's NBA draft?
Markkanen remains the centerpiece of the Utah Jazz rebuild alongside veterans Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton, John Collins, as well as young players Keyonte George, Walker Kessler, and rookies Cody Williams, Isaiah Collier, and Kyle Filipowski. Danny Ainge has assembled a strong Jazz roster but what seems to be not good enough to contend specially in a loaded Western Conference which features Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets, Luka Doncic and the Mavs, Anthony Edwards and the Wolves, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder, and also Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs.
Although the Jazz have assembled a draft haul from the Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert trades. They can trade for a star to pair with Markkanen but they can also restart and reassemble their core if they choose to trade him. The Jazz front office is considered one of the most competent in the entire NBA with Danny Ainge leading the way. Utah can always revisit the trade market next summer but for now, they still have Lauri Markkanen who complements this team built with a mix of veterans and young players. The future is bright in Utah.
