    The West Wing and The Sopranos...two shows, I binge-watch to this day. I mean, I can remember big chunks of dialogue from BOTH shows. And they are arguably or not so arguably, the two greatest shows in tv history, in my opinion.

    What can be said about THE WEST WING that has not already been said about THE WEST WING. It still stands up now. Look at any episode, and you will find something relating to what we are facing as a country today. It was ahead of its time in many ways. From the incredible cast, to the writers who never took the fans for granted or insulted us with outlandish plots and story devices to move it forward. This show delivered week in and week out with crackling writing, witty humor, and real-life issues, and it is still one of my go-to shows when I get bored and need something to watch on DVD.
    One of the nicest touches was the show they produced after the September 11th attacks called, ISAAC AND ISHMEL, where we were shown how an administration handles a major national tragedy. THE WEST WING was appointment television from 1999 though 2006 every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. on NBC.
    The one setback this series faced was in the seventh and final season when they lost a beloved member of their family. John Spencer, who played Chief of Staff-turned Vice Presidential candidate, Leo McGarry, died in real life during the Christmas hiatus in 2005. To honor his memory, the cast and crew agreed to leave his credit in the opening titles for the remainder of the season out of respect for their friend. They wrote his death into the storyline at the end of the season by having Leo McGarry die of a heart attack as his alter-ego did months earlier. To escalate the drama, they did it on Election night.
    One of the other stand-out moments for me, being a fan of THE LAST WORD WITH LAWRENCE O'DONNELL, was seeing him play Jed Bartlet's father and Head Master at his boarding school in the season two finale, TWO CATHEDRALS. He also acted as a writer of sixteen episodes and consulting producer / executive producer / producer / co-producer (88 episodes, from 2000-2006.
    THE WEST WING also won several Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and People's Choice Awards. It won Best New Drama in 2000 (seen here), and Martin Sheen, John Spencer, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Allison Janney all won for their work. Rob Lowe was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2001.
    THE WEST WING is available on MAX (formerly HBO Max and DVD).

      Joshua Malina helped to helm a podcast after the series finished. Every once in a while, I go back and watch the show and then after I watch an episode, I listen to the podcast for that episode. You really get some deep insight into it. Check it out. It’s very good. It’s wherever you find podcasts.

      It only gets better on re-watching. I recommend watching it again later. You get addicted to the pace and intelligence of the dialogue, which frankly doesn't exist anywhere else. This show has the best dialogue of any other television out there.

    If you can't already tell, Sorkin was in the height of his crack and cocaine addiction at this time, which he felt was the only way he could keep up with the demands of writing 22 hour long episodes. He looks gaunt, pale, and sick. Good for him that he overcame it.

      Cinema Insiders You're wrong-- he was writing 22 hour-long episodes and 22 30-minute episodes (Sports Night) by himself that year! Definition of a crazy genius. The coke probably didn't hurt.

      it sounded to me like they discussed doing that if they won the big one too. adrenaline in those moments is out of control, he looked more like he was just looking for the words to say, i didn't sense any kind of negativity there whatsoever, and why would there be? Silly comment tbh

      Luca Pennisi Sorkin never mentioned that when he won the Best Writing award, he completely left out his co-writer (who was standing on the stage with him). Name was Rick Cleveland and think he went on to win emmys for other shows

    • @eugenefullstack7613
      @eugenefullstack7613 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@sandranorman5469 That was unfortunate he forgot to name him, but giving a writing Emmy to anyone but Sorkin for The West Wing is like giving an Emmy to anyone but Matt and Trey for South Park. Whether he snubbed him intentionally or not (I think not, he was just full of adrenaline), arguing that anyone but Sorkin was the reason they were up for a writing Emmy at all is quite silly. That guy just happened to be the one to pitch a spec script to Aaron in the writers room for that specific episode, which Aaron hated and completely rewrote. Guaranteed there were 3 or 4 other people who contributed to that episode who weren't given a credit at all, let alone got to get an Emmy and go on stage. His contributions to the final script which Sorkin wrote from scratch were, according to his own words, 'card in the homeless guys pocket' and 'cj's secret service nickname.' He should feel lucky he got an award at all for that little of a contribution. Funnily enough that Toby story arc is the least entertaining part of the episode.
      That said, Sorkin later apologized to him for it, and it ended amicably. I still think it's silly to give literally ANYONE but Sorkin a writing award for this show. You can hear his unmistakable style in every utterance. Other people can't write dialogue like he can, period. This is self-evident in the seasons after Sorkin left.
