Like it Franko! Nice action, nothing wrong with erratic. It just might be the best trigger for a strike! A 9 inch snake should attract a lot of attention. I don't think it's too big. Lure size and fish size don't always make sense. I've had large fish take small files/jigs meant for panfish, and panfish attack lures twice their size. I tend to use a lure or fly that is 15-20% larger than the predominant forage that is available at that time of year/season. My thinking is that being a bit bigger, the lure would be more desirable/attractive to the predator without being too large and looking odd and out of place. Works for me when fishing pressured and previously caught fish. Cheers!

Love it! Great work, and great looking snake lure! I've been working on a snake for a while, and for me, the bib actually killed the action more. With the length (mine is 15 segments I think), it tended to straighten out and go dead after a bit on a straight retrieve. However, if i used the rod to apply a pulsing effect, the lure would come alive and wriggle like crazy! It's a different action than a straight swim, but it was really neat looking.
That turned out really cool and great job trying it without a lip! I made a rattlesnake wake bait on my channel and it swims incredibly well (but it incorporated a lip). Great stuff!
Nice work, my grandfather made a few of these, his solution was in the middle section he made a small spoon shape with a few holes drilled in the spoon and got his that would move just like a snake.
Amazing video as always! That lure would be amazing for pike here in northern Sweden! A question, why do some crankbaits lose their rhythm when speed is increased? I have made some crankbaits that have a good movement but with greater speed the rhythm goes away. Is it the pulling force that gets too great or is it cavitation behind the lip that makes the rhythm go away? Have a wonderful day!
I made a four (4) segment snake lure back in 2021 that used double-twisteye joints and I resorted to "cheating" because I didn't know otherwise. Yes, it has a lip. 😉 I admit, even with a lip it didn't have as much movement as I would have liked. I know a little more now than then, much thanks to you and others that produce informative content. I recently made a couple of four (4) piece swimbaits that swam beautifully.

Really good looking lure. Don't just forget it in a drawer, make 3 or 4 different end segments, 3 or 4 different 1st and 2nd segments from the head and change them untill you see the difference. In far back segment try to play with weight placement (kind of like with walk the dog lure), maybe more weight in the back or closer to the hinge would work better and with those other segments play with diameter. With weight in the far back you can even play with a rattle chamber. The paint job is really nice, while you had a scale mesh you could have also sprayed some transparent-ish colorshifts and highlights to maybe give some of that pearl look you said you're missing under satin finish. But hey, I can just yap around, overall if this is your 1st time building a snake (which is also something I never did) I still must say good job.
As always Franco, really informative video. What do you think would happen if you added small vertical 'bibs' that sat on opposite sides of every other segment? Would that cause each segment to get thrown in the opposite direction of the one preceding and the one after? Would this get you the action you are looking for?
I use the oil based polyurethane from minwax that gives a real smooth finish if you sand well and you lose no detail for fine carvings. I love the video as always
Rather than a bib, could you concave the neck area? Similar to a popper but not as deep. That way the head might move a little and help the rest of the body's action.
there's a sweet spot for the ratio of the tail in front of the hinge pin to the length behind it. If you go below it, the tail locks open if you go beyond it the tail has no action. But you have the right instincts.
@EngineeredAngler you're probably right but it would take 5 minutes to add a tie on eye to the tip of the mouth and see what happens before building a whole new lure. Then again I don't mind watching another build! Lol
NDYakangler has half a dozen videos using savage gear snakes to target bass and pike so yeah, fish will try to eat it. Even better if you have rattles in it you might just call in a big 'ol catfish.

Great bait! I love the way you put out real experiments for us to learn with along with you. Always gets my ideas flowing. Here's one: how about a lure that's built to go along the bottom? Maybe a swim bait with soft plastic wings of some kind. Could imitate a baby skate / ray / flounder/ or (in Florida) a plecostomus - even a sea robin. How about putting the hooks on top of the lure?

Would it be more efficient cutting each segment in a round fashion to save time? Instead of rounding off each segment after straight cutting.

After seeing the snake lure, got me thinking would a multi jointed popper or walk the dog lure work.
You can actually walk this snake and it looks pretty good but not like a snake moves.

Nice job! But, has anyone ever seen a fish eat a snake? I see snakes swimming around all the time, and never have I seen a fish attack one.
