There was this one guy who preordered Duke Nukem Forever at Gamestop in 2001.
They actually fulfilled the preorder and gave the guy a giant care package of Duke Nukem merchandise and knowing the quality of Duke Nukem Forever, I am going to assume that the merchandise was the better part of the deal.
I wonder if he actually played it when it came out.

I remember my mom had preordered Lego Harry Potter and she took me and my brother to gamestop to pick it up. The preorder bonus was a shirt that said "dumbledore's army" on it. The cashier saw my mom had two kids so they gave her two shirts. Idk that just seemed like a really special moment to me. Preorder bonuses will never be the same :/
The only time I wasn't disappointed with a pre-order was Halo 2. Getting home from the midnight release was amazing. Putting the disk in the system without having to download anything. Then just staying up all night playing multiplayer with people all over the country. The experience could never be replicated for me.
Too bad the campaign is an unbalanced mess. Worst Halo campaign by far. Good thing the multiplayers good though.

My favorite pre order moment was Modern Warfare 2 in 2009. Everybody waiting in line to pick up their pre order and I just walked by everyone to grab a copy off the shelf. It was awesome
8:28 I just bought this for $65 at a retro game store, and I have to say, it’s one of the coolest things in my collection. Both games look great and it’s fun watching the trailers for games that came out two decades ago. Imagine a company doing a preorder bonus that in 20 years would hold more value than a brand-new game

I remember I got a Sound Selection with Twilight Princess HD. Was a very nice bonus.

@@insertcolorherehawk3761 They didn't end up selling Ace Combat 5 separately so I'd say it was worth it. You also got the season pass if you bought the deluxe edition (plus some skins and decals if I'm not mistaken), which isn't anything special as you can normally get it anytime after launch.

Wind waker was one of the first games I pre-ordered as a kid and still feels like it's the only good pre-order deal I ever have done lol. Having access to not only OoT but also Master quest kept me very busy as someone that never had an n64.
My first one was the Twilight Princess Wii U special Edition, came with not only the Cd Scott got with Twilight Princess in an actual case (and possibly the full soundtrack) and the Wolf Link Amiibo too
I remember getting the rubix cube for preordering Mario Kart 8D at target then later noticed that one of the stickers had been placed/rotated incorrectly so it’s literally an unsolvable Rubix cube
Whenever I remember Scott’s game room my mind goes “Scott doesn’t have to buy the game it’ll just show up in his shelf at some point”

My two favorite collector's editions by far are those for Bravely Second: End Layer and Metroid Dread. Bravely Second only had a mini soundtrack and an artbook, but the disc came in an actual jewel case (none of those awful cardboard sleeves), and the artbook was a big, extensive, hardcover affair that felt really well put-together. I still keep it on my bookcase.
Metroid Dread came with a similarly small amount of extras, those being a gorgeous SteelBook case for the game, another very nice artbook, and art cards that depicted different games in the series.
Another excellent collector's edition was Rune Factory 4 Special for the Switch. All it came with was an artbook, but was (again) really well built and covered the entire series.
Yeah, I've always thought pre-orders were scams. Why should I pre-pay for a product that doesn't exist yet? I'll just buy it when it exists.
I've noticed though, whenever I buy a game from GameStop on launch day, I always seem to magically get "the last copy".
Me: "Hi I'd like a copy of Pokemon Omega Ruby?"
GameStop employee: "Did you pre-order it?"
Me: "No..."
GameStop employee: *checks drawer* "Wow, you got the last copy! You lucked out!"
Uh-huh. Right. I guess I'm just on a launch-day-last-copy streak.
A 15 year old me was told that back when I got Ratchet: Deadlocked the day it came out (The first game I ever bought on launch day). At the time I was like "Wow, I got lucky! Here's 5 bucks for Metroid Prime Hunters."
When I got a little older and reminisced on that day I was like, huh, I wonder if that guy was lying. Then again, I was probably more prone to believe it because I was at the one 6 minutes away from that one first and they told me they were out.
Any preorder you get can be cancelled easily if you change your mind. Preorders help them to estimate how many copies they should order. I have legitimately seen stores run out of all non-preordered copies. Most reviews of major games will drop days before release. You can absolutely be informed before you’re locked into purchase.
I work at GameStop and we ran out of Splatoon 3 copies for people who didn’t preorder the game. Like we had to, between each GameStop location in my area, share street copies so that people who didn’t preorder could still get copies of the game
@@millie3958 there was one more copy on the shelf when i got Splatoon 3 on launch day, and they couldn't find the game under the desk so they had to go out back, came back 5 minutes later with the game and just as i was about to leave they slapped a keychain in my face, overall great experience
I've only ever found pre-orders to be a disaster. I got Smash for 3DS on pre-order which had "attempted delivery" which was a lie as I was at home. So I cancelled the order, just bought the game in a store, then later that day the pre-order arrived anyway!

Really? I've had great experiences with pre-orders, despite the fact that I only pre-ordered two video games: Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens physically and Marvel's Avengers digitally. I didn't get any benefit from The Force Awakens, but I did get my order on the afternoon of June 28, the launch day. So no problem there.
As for Marvel's Avengers, I got a few skins and trinkets for pre-ordering (Some of which were really cool) AND, as a bonus, I got the game 3-4 days early. But I had to fork over $90 for a semi-decent looter shooter version of the Avengers.
Anyways, I'm sorry if you've had some terrible experiences from pre-ordering. Personally, while Scott did point out the flaws of it in his video, I find them just a nifty way to experience gaming before anyone else, plus you get a little bonus with it.
The last game I preordered was Borderlands 3, spent £90 on the Super Deluxe edition because of my undying love for Borderlands 2. Went to the shop after work as they launched it a day early, got there for about 10pm. When I realised the game was an unoptimised piece of shit, I was heart broken. Played through the patches hoping they would fix it, they didn't.
Roll on to last month when they announced a season pass 2 on a game I had spent £90 on, thinking I'd get all the content from the word go.
Never touching the game again. Never preordering a game again. It left too bad a taste in my mouth, when a developer releases a buggy mess of a game and then want another £25 to get ALL the content.
I still have nightmares.

Movies used to actually be really big pre-order things as well back in the early 2000s. A lot of movies from big franchises like Star Wars, LotR, HP, etc. would have pre-order bonuses (often exclusive to particular retailers and sometimes different retailers would have different bonuses) and I think that actually helped inspire the game industry to start making pre-order bonuses a thing. It was a lot more likely back then with the demand and production rates of media to miss out on release day if you didn't pre-order. Then movies went fully digital and pre-orders just kinda died off. Not sure why it's remained for video games, but I sure wish you'd still get cool swag for pre-ordering like my Metroid Prime 2 shirt that no one would ever know was a Metroid Prime 2 shirt.

Final Fantasy 7 remake, was due to release a few weeks into the start of covid lockdown. I preordered special edition, and GAME decided to send the copies for delivery a full week before release day 😎. So many of my friends and people in my gaming groups were jealous 😜

I remember back in the day when you had to preorder games otherwise they'd be sold out on launch day at my local stores. Halo 2, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, etc. But preordering hasn't been a necessity for a very long time.

The best preorder bonus I can remember was from GameStop for the full controller and game bundle of DJ Hero 2: a PUMA messenger bag. This was actually a legit quality made bag and everything, marketed as the ideal carrier for the turntable controller to take it to a buddy's house. I ended up buying and returning the game just so I could keep the bag and I still have and use it to this day.

The only games I’ve ever pre ordered were Pokémon Platinum and Heartgold, and I mainly did that for the cool figures.
I remember my first pre-order. Halo Reach. Originally pre-ordering was the only way to get the recon helmet. Eventually it was added as a low level unlock, but was nice to just have it available in general. Recon was a ledgedary set in Halo 3 since only Bungie and the lucky few given it had it.
Preorders for books are big too, actually, and can have a big impact on their printing and whether they make top lists

i remember getting a pretty nice money clip for preordering battlefield hardline, which was not only a nice incentive, but easily my favorite battlefield game

I think the COD preorder was one of the best. You got a juggernogg mini fridge and that fridge goes for $300 nowadays. The preorder itselfs was $200 for the game, all DLC and future DLC and a Mini fridge.
Castlevania Portrait of Ruin was my favorite preorder bonus. It came with a soundtrack, art book, DS case, stylus, posters. It was pretty cool.

Well, this was supposed to come out last sunday
The only pre-orders I remember I've made where:
Pokemon platinum: it came with a figure of Giratina and I ended up with 2 become the employees gave me one when pre-ordering and one on pickup day.
Kingdom hearts 2.5: it came a "collectible" box and a pin
Witcher 3: it came with a poster, soundtrack, a keychain with special bag and the special box
I legit love the Kingdom Hearts pins that came with the special editions

As a proud owner of the rip and tear pack for doom eternal, I can confirm it is worth it for the OG doom sounds and doom 64.
You could pay for both fairly cheap not long after launch, not just that but I managed to buy the pre-order bonus before it was made available and without pre-ordering through a trick on Steam.
But I'll agree. Those were the best pre-order bonuses I've seen in a while.

I remember picking up my copy of Zelda ocarina of time in 1998 my brother had pre ordered 2 copies one for him and one for me and we were both pleasantly surprised when we received the gold cartridge collectors edition instead of the gray cartridge standard edition just for pre ordering the game instead of throwing in a tacky sticker or keychain it really felt like Nintendo went out of their way to make the product special and it felt Like they were saying “thank you for purchasing our game and supporting us”
I remember getting Paper Mario Origami King 1 day before release due to this. I love pre-orders.

I’ve had fond memories of pre-ordering from Amazon since I had heard a rumor from a friend that you can get games early. This actually happened when I pre-ordered Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2, and me and my brother were ecstatic tweens even though we couldn’t play online since there was literally no one to play with.
Yeah pretty much that's why it pre-order the game of plants versus zombies go over to to get the games early.
My first pre order I ever did was Kirby Triple Deluxe(great game by the way). And I’ve been preordering games ever since.

In life I learned that nothing goes as planned so I usually pre-order a game when I am not sure if I would be able to get it on launch day. It helps if the bonus is something kinda neat. Like destiny 2 the witch queen giving you an exclusive emote and emblem. They look cool and is was gonna pre-order anyways so its a neat extra.
Pokémon Legends Arceus had some cool pre-order bonuses. Depending on where you bought it, you would either get an Arceus plush, an Arceus figurine or a pokéball cartridge holder alongside a steelbook.

Strangely enough, I have stood in line to stand in line at Gamestop. First, you stand in line to get assigned a number for the launch, then you later arrive for the launch to assume your place in line. No joke.
My fav pre-order bonus is early access like, being able to play a game a week early is sick.
On the real though, go vacation is a fantastic game. It feels like what Wii resort should have been but then all in a portable form factor
