  • THIS 305 VORTEC ENGINE IS WHAT STARTED THE ENTIRE LS SWAP SQUAREBODY C10 PROJECT. OBVIOUSLY WE CHOSE NOT TO USE THIS ENGINE. SINCE I SENT IT IN TO THE MACHINE SHOP AND HAD IT GONE OVER AND SUMMIT SENT US THE PARTS I NEED TO REPAIR IT. I THINK ITS WORTH BUILDING AND PUTING INTO SOMETHING ELSE. LOOKING FOR A 1988 THROUGH 1992 S10. STAND CAB OR EXTENDED CAB. SHORTBED ONLY. 2 WD PREFFERED. CLEAN RUST FREE, COMPLETE AND NOT BUTHERED.

    i made a mistake in the video. these are not "vortec" heads. they are "swirl" heads. the specs of the chamber, intake and exhaust valves measurements and the low flowing issues are correct....i just called them the wrong name. actual vortec heads flow much better and would make an improvement. you will have to overlook my mistake......im not a chevy guy. it is still a great engine for what it was intended to be use for. basic transportation, good fuel economy, occasional light towing and reliability.

      I would get a 3.75" stroker crank to take it out to 334 CID. For cam I would look for something like 214/224 @0.050" and 0.450 lift and the LSA of 108°. Port 081 heads and install 1.9"/1.55" LS valves with beehive springs. Use 1.6:1 roller rockers for a bit more lift. For an intake, an Edelbrock Performer RPM Airgap and an AVS2 650 carb.
      Build for 10.5:1 CR. Should give good performance in a half truck with good economy.

      Yup so those heads are 187 castings , they are a TBI head , they are similar to the Vortec in that they also are a swirl port , The Vortec head is a copy of the 193 head installed on 350 TBI's except for the smaller chamber and intake valve.
      From my experience and research the 187 is hi velocity swirly head so good for gas mileage and low end torque.

      That cam card from Summit is in error in that the exhaust lobe centerline should read 124 not 104 and hence the lobe separation angle on that cam will be 114* which is gonna give you super smooth idle.
      I would say by looking at the cams you have there that the cam in the box is the same as the one you pulled from the motor might even be milder as the Summit 1100 wouldn't even be classed as a RV cam !
      The Summit 1100 is equal to the cam that makes the 305 a dog and the most hated small block in the GM line, i would implore that you don't run it and go for one of the dozens of better aftermarket RV grinds.
      Right of the top of my head i would say run Comps high energy 260H , at just 0.440 lift it should work , should bolt right in which is what you want.

      230 horsepower is less than a stock L69 makes. Using NRHA's S/SS factor a stock 1987 L69 makes 248 hp. Mine made 248 on Carlisle Racings dyno at 4800 rpm. Thats a bone stock L69 305 with stock exhaust into 2.5 inch walkers and the alternator, water pump, steering pump, and smog pump attached like the factory rates theirs. With nothing more than orange valve springs and 3 angle valve job its over 260 horsepower.

    The 305 gets a bad rap by many because they don’t understand the purpose for which it was made. It was designed for light duty use or occasional towing of the family boat while maintaining decent fuel efficiency. It wasn’t intended to be a HD torque monster.
    I had a customer who had one in his 2WD Silverado that routinely got 18-21 mpg. He put 300K on it before it needed refreshing. Guys mess up stuffing big cams and carbs on them in an attempt to make it something that it was never intended to be.
    For a cruiser that sounds good and is easy on the fuel they’re hard to beat for simplicity and economy of repair.

    That summit 1102 cam is a lot like the edelbrock 2102 performer cam. I have used it on a couple of 305's and a 307....smooth idle, high vacuum, broad torque range even on a little 305. A little.....very little port bowl work, a good 3 angle valve job, a performer like intake or a slightly tweaked factory 4bb intake and you are rolling. You will love how it drives on the highway, not what you might expect from a 305.

    Oke on the camshaft, your block is a factory hydraulic roller block so using a flat tappet hydraulic cam is a bad choice. Id use an 081 L69 head and tie a rope around those 187 swirl ports use them as a boat anchor. The 081 heads will give you more power everywhere especially on the high end. The cam Id use a hydraulic roller in the 212 intake 218 exhaust duration with .450 lift and 110 - 112 lobe center angle so your power brakes will work without a problem. Use a factory 14057053 L69 aluminum intake which actually makes more power than a Weiand Action Plus or Edelbrock Performer. The springs Id use are Manley 22410 and set them up with 130 lbs or seat pressure @ 1.75 inches. Ive built a bunch of 305 and race one in NHRA Stock Eliminator K Stock Automatic.

    put a micrometer on the cam lobes and measure the lift and multiply it by 1.5. Use a degree wheel after installing the cam in the engine and use that to find the cams duration. Figuring out the cam specs are easy if you know how to degree a cam. The stock valves in a 305 are dished, those valves are flat roof Manleys which are a "budget replacement' valve. A 104 lobe center angle is going to make horrible top end horsepower. And good luck on your power brakes working right.

    My Opinion on The 230 HP is the fact that there is no emissions components, & the Intake is probably Single Plane, Because you are never at idle while the Boat is moving. So The cam would probably be low end Torque to get the Boat to plane & High end HP to maintain Speed/Plane. The Exhaust on a Boat is usually short & free flowing.

For that matter, wouldn't a somewhat more aggressive cam in a 350 seem milder for 383 or 400 SBC? So, would you be able to go up a cam size and still use the stock converter in a 383 or 400? Thosde aren't vortec heads. Those are tbi swirl port heads. 305s need the 58cc chambers to have any compression. I would have at least stepped up to the stock 300 horse 350 cam.

    230 horse is possible. My Volvo Penta 225 is a 305 SBC painted red with fancy Volvo decals.
    I beat the crap out of that thing. It nearly caught fire-twice and sunk once. Still going fine. No oil consumption, decent fuel economy and pretty reliable.

    Just came across this video. Want some advice stick to the stock cam especially on a 305.i have a lot of experience in this engine.bigger cams in these motors over stock seriously looses low end torque for daily driving. These motors are particularly sensitive to higher cams.

    • @MasterWitchDoctor
      @MasterWitchDoctor 5 месяцев назад

      Ive built a whole lot of 305s and you are correct about the sensitivity to cams. The biggest Ive used in a 305 street engine is a Lunati Street Master 225 duration .477 lift. It was far more temperamental than the Bracket Master was with 224 duration and .460 lift. Its the lobe separation and ICL that made it less forgiving.

  • @jessesyfie7244
    @jessesyfie7244 Год назад

    I should add I prefer the cams with wider lobe separation angles. 114/116 degrees. smoother idle, and broader power band. U didnt say what compression ratio it will be, 8.5? They look like dish pistons, If I were me id swap to some flattops and get the compression up to 9.5/10 to 1 and run 91 octane gas will pick up power, torque, mileage, and efficiency all across the board.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  Год назад

      i dont know what the compression ratio is. the builder wouldnt share any specs. i might pick up some better heads and maybe a better cam.

    Nothing wrong with building a 305. They have their flaws yes, but it’s still a SBC. Just make sure your head gasket is larger in diameter than your combustion chamber on the head you’re choosing to run…
    Edit: As for wanting more lift, just run 1.52” roller tipped magnums, they work real well and in stock form running a viton seal, you have about .490” clearance to play with…

      the factory lift on an L69 was .403 intake .415 exhaust and Ive made 260+ horsepower with the stock cam. The 081 heads start to diminish at .450 and @ .500 you reach port saturation.

    Lobe center is not the same as lobe seperation. Lobe center tells you the advance or retard of valve timing.lobe seperation tells you the overlap given a specific duration.stock Chevy usually has lobe seperation of 110 or more.did you find the specs on marine cam? Some marine cams make good daily driver.example a few factory Ford 351w marine cams have been used in mild 302 and 351w.small gain but as you pointed out,don't require stiff springs that accelerate cam wear.
