I was almost expecting this to end with "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy"... Great content, and I enjoyed the longer format.
i don't care what some guys say first engine i built had a friend that was a mechanical engineer. we built 307 using flat top pistons .bored 30 over ran a .480 lift cam. i cant really remember the heads we used wanting to say they were off 400 small block. we manually weighed each piston and rod we filed every rod down to match the weight of the lightest one we had. .this was 40 years ago. i remember turning 8000 rpm just couple times because the engine wasn't completely balanced you don't want to do that to many times. installed in a 73 nova 4 speed manual trans. i never raced it on drag strip strictly street racing was never beaten in that car i raced a couple chevelle ss big blocks and a guy that drag raced on the track a lot never was able to out run the nova .guys in chevelle ss big block cars there problem was spinning. my car would not or i would not let spin. i raced a guy twice in his chevelle ss first race he started in first gear and just smoked his tires he had a posi rear end second race he started in second gear lot closer i still beat him by car length and half.. my good friend i mentioned earlier he got a light body mustang installed a built 350 sb. i out ran it with nova is such a light car it was 500lbs lighter than the z28 Camaro i had. miss the late 70s and 80s when people were people that had common since best times ever
Nothing wrong with a 307. Same bore as the 283 and there are plenty of racers running them to 8k plus. With good heads and compression they scream. The same can't be said for a 305 with its small bore and limited head flow because of cylinder/valve shrouding
Somebody really well known in performance world told me something I never forgot. A engine doesn't know what brand it is, what size it it, what color it is, if it has a power adder or not, what it is SUPPOSED to do, or what kind of vehicle it's in. It says at this instant I got these parts, I see this fuel, and I ingest this atmosphere, so I can do this xxxx. That person was the founder of Kinsler Fuel injection 1984. Build what you got, f the noise, and rock out with your BLOCK out.
I always come back to these early episodes of VGG, because I like when Derek builds engines on the cheap. I admire whats he's done with the channel since then, but these were my faves.
Hey 290 and 328 isnt bad at all for an old 307 with an okay cam in it! Good job yet again Derek! Just going through watching old videos while i wait for new ones, i love that over the years youve stayed true to your roots, and still teach us everything along the way, and alot of that info hasnt changed much, including keeping things on a realistic budget that alot of us can afford, excluding me 😂. Thank you Derek
I would not except anything less than 1.5 hp per cubic inch out of any engine. Everyone’s been brainwashed to think that one horsepower per cubic inch is good. It’s not! All these engines are being built way too tight. No reason for that if you properly hone cylinder walls and adjust your piston to wall clearance. But few people understand what the word proper is and what the clearances should be.
@Peter Viceroy. Can you please explain to me how to get 460.5 HP out of a 307 ( Per your expected 1.5 per cube), Naturally Aspirated, on a budget? Thank you
Many years ago I built a 307 for a friend of mine. For some reason the engine came with a forged steel crank from the factory. The engine came from a Malibu taxi cab. I had the engine hot tanked and had new cam bearings pressed in along with new freeze plugs. I honed the cylinders and got new forged pistons for it. The rods were magnafluxed and shot peened 350 HP rods. A set of new Z28 rod bolts finished the assembly. I farmed out re balancing the rotating assembly. The heads I used were “double hump” heads that had 1.94 intake and 1.50 exhaust valves. A complete rebuild was done along with new Z28 springs, valve stem seals multi angle valve seats. The cam was the 151 327/350 hp hydraulic lifter cam lifters and pushrods. For the oil pump I used a Z28 high volume pump. I matched the oil pump cavity to the rear main cap and before bolting it down I polished the inner surface and did a smooth radius into the cavity. I packed the oil pump with petroleum jelly for instant suction. The intake was a stock Chevrolet aluminum high rise dual plane 1970 Z28 intake with the ports opened up to match the intake gaskets as were the heads. The head gaskets were copper. We dropped it into a 69 Camaro that had 307 emblems on it. It was a 4-speed car. The carburetor used was a Holley 600 cfm vacuum secondary unit. After a 1,500 mile gentle break-in. We changed the break-in 30 weight oil for 10W-30 Kendall GT-1 racing oil and a magnetic drain plug. The car was dyno’d and got 312hp at the rear wheels! Not bad for stock Chevy parts. With 4.11 positraction 12 bolt rear. It’d run 13.5’s at 102 average.
There were all kinds of trick parts used by everybody. But as I recall Chevy was more likely to use tougher blocks and cranks in some of their grocery getters. It was not uncommon to find 4 bolt mains and forged cranks in weird applications. In the Fords there were none of either for the most part.
My 307 had a steel crank too. It was black. I had to fly cut the pistons to run 2.02’s so I put some home ported 305 HO heads and a Isky 268 and it pushed all the rocker studs out ... so I drilled the tower and beat roll pins into the stud. The engine is still running in my 68 GMC.
When i worked at a ford garage in the early 90s we used to get f150s in with a hole in #5 piston so we would change the short block under warranty. Well time would go by and then ford would give us the go ahead to dispose of the old short block. We took the piston and rod out of one and replace the bad one in the other. New bearings and oil pump all else stock on the short block with our 1970 ported heads. These 351s were cast dished pistons and not much compression with way to much cam. (Hydraulic flat tappet with maybe .520 lift 240 at .050 on 108. My buddies 79 Fairmont would run high 11s low 12s any day. My 79 mustang would do low 12s with bored and flat top pistons but my suspension wasnt set up as good as his. 28x10 tire with 4.10 gear and $200 c4 trans. The good old days for sure. Cheers
Art Tafil the 307 never came in a four bolt main block so why would it have a forged steel crank? , I built a 307 I used the 291 fuelie heads with some good port work also used the strip dominator aluminum Intake with a isky mega cam I did other work to it and made over 400 hp
Love this show. I've learned so much from watching it. The old school talent you just don't find today at your local shop. I bet there isn't a buried car anywhere this guy can't get running.
Way back when I was a kid, I needed a motor to drop in my ‘68 Camaro to get to work. I was in to street racing, and the car was broken more often than not... A friend offered me a 307 out of a wrecked Chevelle. The engine had been overhauled by the uncle of another friend, who told me I might find it interesting. I pulled it out of the Chevelle and dropped it in the Camaro one weekend, with new plugs, wires, etc. Around noon on Monday, I took it for a test drive. Holy crap, that sucker ran damn good! The builder never would tell what he did to it, but it blew off a built 72 Z28 that had been the quickest street car in our small town. Of course this was long before the internet, and 1000 horse supercharger kits and computerized engine controls...
I used to dick around with 307s in the 70's, and built a few really good ones. They were dirt cheap and in the junk yards by the hundreds. I'd cam them up with high lift, short duration cams and small 4 bbl carbs and people would laugh at my "dog-shit 307" until I pulled the right front wheel off the ground on my 69 Chevelle. I had a high-stall torque converter and 3.73 gears, so that little beast would launch like a missle. Yeah, she ran out of breath before 5000 rpm, but until then, it was a blast. I had a shift improver kit in the TH350 and could squeal 2nd gear and chirp 3rd. I even had a guy call me a liar, and that it was really a 350, so I had him look up the numbers. Yep - the original 307 in a 69 Chevelle, literally "numbers matching."
Similar experience with one of these, had a 350 with a wallowed out starter bolt hole, didn't have what I needed to fix it, so put in the 307 instead.. not sure if anyone had done any work to it before that, but that thing ran circles around the 350. Not much for top end, but plenty of mid range.
Im squeezing ~140-150hp out of a 134cid 4 cyl right now...from 1997. Another guy built one to 230 crank hp. people laugh it his build but I think 230hp from a 23 year old 4 cyl is nice.
The 307, my first love. I would "borrow" my Uncle Jack's 69 Malibu in my pre-driver's license days when everyone was out of town. I turned the closet upside down looking for a spare key.
That's so funny. I guess I'm you, but a few decades later. I'd borrow my uncles Audi A6 with the 2.7 TT and a hot boy tune on it when everyone was gone. That car was wicked fast... Compared to the 160 hp Ford fusion I was used to practicing driving in hahaha. If she didn't weigh about as much as Rosie O'Donnell for some reason I reckon a guy could probably get goin somewhere in the ballpark of "actually fast." Idk why I told you that.. Just reminded me of that, been probably 13 or so years now.
Hey, I liked my 307 in my 71 Chevelle with Powerglide added stall speed/ B&M trans pack. I just added 4 bbl manifold and carburetor and added headers sounded great!!! This was my second car after High School..then I went bigger 24 cars later…my brother cammed up his 307 in his 72 Nova…. Early eighties best time of my life!!!
This channel I’ve been watching for about a month and it’s very fast becoming my favorite his goofy antics and just how smart he is when it comes to engines makes it super simple to learn from him and I’m a learn by doing kinda guy
Nice budget shade tree build. Would be a nice engine in a Daily or mini truck, third gen. 290 hp is nothing to be sneezed at in a small, cheap and probably reliable engine. Thanks I appreciate the build.
Derrick, this video was awesome and it hit home with me. My dad medically retired from Winter's Foundry here in Canton Ohio in 1989! I remember they produced parts for the Cosworth Vega. Awesome memory, thank you!
very easily done, back-face valves and drop in better springs. still wouldn't push it much past 5700 rev, kinda pointless when peak horse-torque happens about 5150, geared to shift 4500-5600 stays in its peak range.
@@modelnutty6503 6000 rpm sounds so good and sometimes its better to not shift when you're gettin closer to the finish line when racing stop light to stop light
Holy next door neighbor!! Three years… this is truly burning my eyes on the visual changes observed. I’ve been watching your videos for a little bit now, but somehow never noticed what I’m noticing now, in comparison to the corvette vajeo i watched this morning. Well I’ll be!! Cheers and keep we coming - always a delight and pleasure & hope I didn’t harm any mentals with my amazement.
Good job on this, man! That's a mighty little 307 for that budget! proof that something decent can be done out of these. Sound was fine during the rain by the way.
My Dad built a 307 one time for a 67 c-10 step side it was 5sp also with posi rear and I swear it was one of the best running small blocks I've ever driven still to this day. It would absolutely smoke the tires and dad had a set of 50s on it Cobra radials I remember man I miss my ole man. I'm thankful for my childhood.
Derek, Derek, Derek - You bring back GREAT memories! I know your popularity (and business) makes it impossible to respond to comments. You may not even be reading them. Been watching you a LONG time budroe. Rebuilt my first engine in 1967. A stock 265 in a 56 chevy with an el cheapo rebuild kit. Blew it up at Dragway 42 in Ohio less than 30 days later. FAIL. 1st "serious" build was next winter 1968. I was 17 and my mechanic bro-in-law assisted. HIS choice = a bone stock 283. Tear down showed it very well cared for. Summit Racing had just opened for biz. Basically just a small speed shop in Stow OH about 10 miles from my home. Got all the parts at Summit of course. BROKE the bank at about $150 bucks including cam & them machining the heads. Did NOT turn it into a 307 by changing the crank. Simply bumped up the cam a bit, high rise manifold and a Carter 4 bbl and that girl ran and ran and ran. That little 283 would do 13 sec 1/4 miles in a stripped down 56 chevy body in CMP (C - modified production for those in Rio Linda) I still think its the most dependable engine you can put in a vintage unit or street restomod.
Excellent example of what a feller can do on a budget. With proof even!! You dang near squeaked 300 out of 'er. Gotta say I was ducking when you were giving her the business tho. Good on ya!
@@ViceGripGarage At 50,000 miles the taper on the bore and the ring lands on the pistons will make your day and take a vacation on you and the smoke trail will be your budget buster.
I LOVE THE 307!!! Last one I did pulled through 8000RPM, 327 forged crank, 020 over forged eyebrowed flattops, 292 intake w/480 lift (327/375hp cam),, dual roller chain, Rhoads lifters, high volume pump, Power Pack heads (small chamber, small valve 1.9/1.7, large port), marine 327 manifold with the center cut out and notched, a 1" spacer, Holly 600 converted to manual secondaries, one size smaller jets and 30%ish destroked power valve, 1.7 rockers, custom by me rebuild and curved distributor. below 2300 ran like a nice 307, at 2300 intake air speed hits the sweet spot and whistles in the intake. Twists the chassis torque change all the way through 7800RPM. When kept my foot out at 55MPH (74Nova, Police TH350 and 2:73 rear) got 22mph. Once into the torque band I have no idea... To busy keeping it pointed straight. Loved it.
My dad's brand new '68 Belair had a 307. It ran well when it was new, anyway. He/we pulled a 23-ish foot Chevy V8 powered boat all over the state with it. How well the 307 held up over the long term, I don't know. He traded for new ones every few years.
Pro Pauly was my uncle name he was going build me a 350 never got too he passed away when my nova was at his shop ole girl still setting you remind me of him a lot thanks for video
Cool rebuild! I like the "saving money" aspect of the build and that you took the 307 and didn't do anything radical to it. And 290 hp is very respectable! When I was much younger, I remember those 283's and 307's. Not very well liked motors, but they were work horses. I remember that everyone wanted a 302 or a 350 including myself! Years later, I had a 1980 Camaro that came with a 305 4bbl Rochester. It wouldn't rev, so my buddies and I decided to "build" it ... if course the wrong way. The block looked good, so we just threw in a way too big cam, a double row roller timing chain, bigger heads (I think 1.92 intake, but I could be wrong) with factory springs, keepers and no valve work, headers, no cat, dual exhaust with no name turbo mufflers (still not sure what they are, but they sounded good), Edelbrock Performer intake and Holley 650 (definitely too much carb). It had a highway rear end, I think it was a 2.41, which we swapped out for a 3.31 posi. And of course the chrome valve covers, timing chain cover, alternator bracket and the blue anodized Edelbrock air cleaner! There were a few times, I ran her to 6,000 rpm (just touched it) and she held. The motor made such good noise above 5,000 rpm! The cam had way too much lift and duration, so she loped at idle and loved high rpms. I think she was still making power at 6,000 rpm, but I didn't want to blow up the motor. The "rebuild" lasted about 25K miles - she still ran well, but the performance had drifted away - maybe compression? On a very hot day, I overheated her (bad radiator - I knew it, but I didn't want to buy a new radiator, so I kept running her too long). I broke something - she still ran, but one exhaust pipe blew slightly white puffy exhaust. I was so upset, that I didn't do a tear down and wound up selling her. Maybe it was only a bad head gasket? No leaking coolant outside the motor and only a slight oil leak. That was the last "performance" V8 I owned (the 1984 Pontiac Firebird with a 305 4bbl was not in the same league). Now it's higher performance 4's! Thanks for making this video. Brings back some great memories!
of youtube car personalities scotty kilmer is actually the worst. 100% backwoods shadetree crap and turns around and tells you to buy an import because "they're better" He would no doubt bubba the jeeblus out of whatever camry he's ever seen. at least if you're gonna do bubba stuff you know what that means and why and why not do it "the right way"
@Nathaniel Bolden S Kilmer showed up on my yT feed and I couldn’t stand his antics. Derek is 100% authentic. @Vice Grip Garage I love seeing You interact with the wife and children. This was one of your better episodes. The blue Chevelle in a garage for 18 years was another. I choked laughing when you arrived at the destination and did a burnout.
best mileage I got on my 76 nova with 305 that I put a quadrajet and manifold on in off a 73 350 it would do 25 mpg typical highway and it ran great. I sold the car and the next owner put 300kmiles on it so with about 400k the engine still ran great. it was the death of the 2nd trans a junk yard turbo 350 at 300k as well as the rest of the car that finished it off. engine never complained.
The best bling covers (unlessyou use roller rockers), are the "Chevrolet"-script covers. Generic chrome, square ends, are so "generic". prefer engines looking stock but tidy.
FYI, you don’t need to use umbrella seals on the exh valves cause it can’t pull vacuum through the exhaust valves. I have done literally 500 to 1000 sets of sbc heads and bbc heads and never used anything on the sbc except the o rings on the exh’s and on the bbc’s, yes we used either the push on seals or the the umbrellas and sometimes only the o-rings all around. It’s a preference. Love your channel Derek, don’t ever change what you do.
My Dad bought a leftover '73 El Camino in '74 and he couldn't believe the DEAL he got. Then, he realized he had a 307 with 3 in the tree and vinyl bench seats! FANCY! I always wanted to do a 307 build, especially coz it's got 2 more cubes than a 305! LoL
I've watched this video a few times already, just like going back & watching your videos over sometimes. There's a reason why small block Chevy was the go to engine of choice for most people back in the day. 283 & 307 were pretty much the same block, like 305 & 350 are pretty much the same block. It didn't matter, you could bolt most every accessory to it, from whatever engine size you had.
307 is a much better engine than a 305 I love to pick up a cheap 307 and slam the crank into a 350 to make a 327 the most valuable part of a 307 is that 327 crankshaft
My 71 Chevelle came with a 307. I built it as a spare to put in my car while I build a 406. I put a set of gm 601 heads. Some light work done to them. Steel shim headgaskets and a isky circle track cam. Weind street warrior intake. She's a runner. Super fun motor. Not a crazy power house but can still smoke the tires.
Ihad a 307 in my 72 Cmaro. Drove it cross-country from Chicago to San Fransisco in late 1980. Topped out at 117 MPH in the Western states. While I had it replaced the fuel pump and radiator (it had over 117,000 on it when I bought it. The thing was a tank.
Back when these things were just about everywhere we put one together with a set of bowl ported and gasket matched double hump heads, an E 1090 ELGIN circle track cam (more mid range power and throttle response than strip grinds), a ported cast iron 327 intake with the dividers cut down and an 800cfm Q-Jet from a 455 Olds, and a cheap set of 1-5/8 headers. It went into a '72 Nova with an M21 and 4:11 gears out back. After recurving the distributor, some carb tuning and with the headers open it went 13.40s on street tires. And not ONE chrome part. Not too bad for an engine everyone said was only good for trips to the grocery store. No dyno numbers - only the rich kids could afford dyno time back then!
Love ya folks. Had 72 with 307. Smoked horrible cleaned out return (oil) under valve cover with coat hanger changed oil. Stopped smoke.went from me to brother.to his friend. Sold to don't know who after!
He fools you into thinking otherwise, BUT, this man knows his stuff in a major way, just like a banker knows how to take your money. I love this channel Big Time. Fred
It is great to see someone build a engine that unfairly gets no love. actually most if not all engines have potential if built right. a 307 is basically a stroked 283 and in the late 50's and early 60's they built some great 283s, even boring them a 1/8" over and creating the 301. Chevy later built the 302 with a 327 block and a 283 crank and installed it in the Z28.
nice LoL... what'd you switch it with?. I remember when I was like 8 or 9, my dad pulled one outta of a 68 4dr Impala. don't remember what he put in it, but kept the 307 badges... always thought that was cool. then of course my first car was an '83 Cutlass with a 307... never swapped it out though.
Had to re-watch this episode as I'm about to reassemble my 283 after a trip to the machine shop. 040" bore so new pistons & rings. Nothing else special, stock rebuild. Swapped into a 77 Vega over 30 years ago but never finished that project. Now it's on.
What great show you do. Thank for the videos you all are producing. My all time new favorite to watch when able since previous old favorite show this old house and new yankee work from late 1980s. Dan Buchignani
I had a 307 . I bought a 73 LT . Kid said it had a 350 . It didn't drive like a 350 . Ran the numbers . Its a 307 . So i put a 327 intake on it so i could run a q jet on it . I killed alot a cars with that 307 . Car had a 3:08 posi rear end . It would snap both rear tires up in smoke when i dumped that spredbore ! Raced one guy . A buddy at the time . He had a 30 over 390 . Melling cam . Headers n a holley . We raced . I was behind him a car length . Single lane . Hangin a left . We nailed it . He jumped ahead a car length . As soon as we got around the corner . Turnin left . I jumped in the merging lane and dumped that spreadbore . Shot on by him and put 2, 3 car lengths between us . He couldn't catch back up ! Which is why im a spread bore guy ! That 307 killed alot cars ! I finally floated a valve one day . 5300 rpm . It went down hill from ther ! Good Times 😎
Not even close to anything ls related this 307 will put down 140-179hp to the wheels depending on fan assembly and accessories used a stock 5.3 will put down 220-250 to the wheels stock and ls1 5.7 put down 300 to wheels ls based motors are monsters
Cool episode! Pretty respectable numbers for low buck experiment! Not all my projects need to pull the wheels off the ground. I have new respect for the 305 - 307! Thanks!
Me amd my dad are currently doing a few things to a 70 model 307 that he put in his 71 C10 some years back out his 70 C10 he totaled and ive got a bigger new cam and lifters to put in and its already straight piped with headers and im gonna get a dual plain intake and 4 barrel and take off the 2 barrel just simple stuff but this got me thinking about a rebuild kit and putting some flat tops in also
Thanks for doing an old-school Chevy and not a twin-turbo LS...as rare as they may be...we've all seen that one guy's channel who puts an LS in everything. Nice real street small block on the cheap!
Just found you recently, love the rebuild on the this 307, makes me have hope for mine. You make the video's so much fun to watch. I would love to see you do a rebuild/restore on an 87 Cutlass Supreme, shouldn't be hard to find as there's plenty around. Keep me in stitches, lol. All the best.
Double dipping here, but 290hp at 5300 for stock 307 tweeked ever so slightly is no joke. Thats stinking amazing and l will bet dollars to donuts that she's not too thirsty at the pump! What I love most is a guy showed us you can have a lotta fun even on a budget. Lots of people start ambitious projects they don't have time or money to see through. This flat makes my whole week just a bit brighter!
I had a 1981 Delta 88 with a 307. That was the best engine I've ever had. It was reliable and had plenty of power. I used to do dry pavement donuts in it. Lol It was alot of fun. I really miss that car. I gave the engine to a buddy and he put it in his fire bird that was set up for a V6. After he put it in he could bark 2nd and 3rd gear and it was an automatic.🤣
Cork ends..No issues...Glue 'em to the block first about an hour ahead of time...A little RTV in the corners and all is hunky dory...She's a stout little bugger.
I just started the video and decided to comment first. And just as I decided I heard the first comments about distain for the 307 (which, yeah, quite aware of). Back in '83 my '71 K/20 with 307 threw it's timing chain, bent stuff, so time for engine work. I wanted the power yet had economy concerns as well. I didn't care what anyone said, I built me a peppy 307 4bbl. Without details, that thing sure felt like 300hp to me and it got 13 mpg (4spd/4.57s/37" mud tires)
I really loved this video. My guess was 250hp and you went well beyond that! Great job, man. Very cool. I had a 307 in a malibu chevelle of my own and I just sort of figured it didn't deserve a big tune up... and now I think I should have before I sold it. Oh well next time!
I have said this before but I’m saying it again. Putting all the funny antics aside, I’m very impressed with your overall knowledge especially after watching this engine rebuild video. Very cool and informative!😎👍
That was amazing, nice job, I rebuilt my little Reliant Robin 850cc, she blow a piston hole, so managed to get a second hand piston and fitted new rings to all 4 pistons , luckily No 4 did not damage the Bore so just homed them all in, and gas flowed the head, she runs a treat , and for a little Engine she kicks ass lol the rebuild is on my channel, Can't wait to see that lump you did back in car and give her some stick, love your channel Derek.

I was seriously thinking that the whole damn time.

Haha, definitely reminds me of Red Green.
“Keep your stick on the ice”.

Love this guy! He’s the Everyman. No high dollar parts most of us can’t afford. The jokes and comments keep me rolling:)
I think that why i just got thu watching a 33 min vid of how to rebuild an engine and had no idea what he was talking about the whole time pretty much
Your wife is pretty but you're an idiot. Hahaha. Love your shows man.

Love the "Don't Tread on Me" and the "Come and Take It" flags hanging up in the background!
You got a great outcome. no leaks, no failure and 290hp is excellent.
Definitely. I'd be very happy with that from a 307.
@@JcJimmyD. Not bad considering the parts.
Thank you
@@ViceGripGarage. If the budget is cheap as possible it's a fairly tall order. But with a relatively small budget that isn't a huge order.
Great job and thanks for proving what an old 307 is actually capable of.
Derek is a mechanical genius. And entertaining too. I can only do maintenance on my lawnmower, so I find this channel very interesting.
It’d run 13.5’s at 102 average.
one helluva lot of fun to drive!!! Not many of these 307s out there in something as sweet as a '69 Camaro
Cheers
Art Tafil the 307 never came in a four bolt main block so why would it have a forged steel crank? , I built a 307 I used the 291 fuelie heads with some good port work also used the strip dominator aluminum Intake with a isky mega cam I did other work to it and made over 400 hp
you turned a boat anchor into a tire smoker! It was worth it!
Had a 71 Camaro 307 My Brother and I put a cam and heads on it with all the fixings. It ran super. I was a kid I loved it !
@@wirenutt57 Ford made a living off 3.73 gears in the foxbodies early 90s. 210hp motors and would bury the Z28s

The ‘Red Green’ show lives on for another generation . People that know will understand .
Pretty good for a 307 with those stock parts! Good job!
If she didn't weigh about as much as Rosie O'Donnell for some reason I reckon a guy could probably get goin somewhere in the ballpark of "actually fast."
Idk why I told you that.. Just reminded me of that, been probably 13 or so years now.

Nice budget shade tree build.
Would be a nice engine in a Daily or mini truck, third gen.
290 hp is nothing to be sneezed at in a small, cheap and probably reliable engine.
Thanks I appreciate the build.
What mini truck would you drop it in?
I'd love to see a little Mighty Max or similar stomping the ground.
@@babyfacenc a little Mazda B2200 would be a nice match. Think most would lean towards the 350 though. Just a lit more options for that kind of swap
I was NOT expecting it to dyno like that, GREAT JOB!!
Derrick, this video was awesome and it hit home with me. My dad medically retired from Winter's Foundry here in Canton Ohio in 1989! I remember they produced parts for the Cosworth Vega. Awesome memory, thank you!
Great heads, great intake, this is by far my favorite build I've seen.
awesome 👌👌
I'm impressed by that power level from a 307. Imagine 325HP is easy at 6000-6200rpm if the valvetrain supported that engine speed. Nice work.
very easily done, back-face valves and drop in better springs.
still wouldn't push it much past 5700 rev, kinda pointless when peak horse-torque happens about 5150, geared to shift 4500-5600 stays in its peak range.
@@modelnutty6503 6000 rpm sounds so good and sometimes its better to not shift when you're gettin closer to the finish line when racing stop light to stop light

Good on ya!

Loved it.

Back in the day my Impala had a 307, never let me down. I could never do this but I really enjoy watching the whole process.

There's a reason why small block Chevy was the go to engine of choice for most people back in the day. 283 & 307 were pretty much the same block, like 305 & 350 are pretty much the same block. It didn't matter, you could bolt most every accessory to it, from whatever engine size you had.

Not even close to anything ls related this 307 will put down 140-179hp to the wheels depending on fan assembly and accessories used a stock 5.3 will put down 220-250 to the wheels stock and ls1 5.7 put down 300 to wheels ls based motors are monsters
Best Hone Alone movie ever :)
I can’t get enough of your humor thank you for your time.
Cool episode! Pretty respectable numbers for low buck experiment! Not all my projects need to pull the wheels off the ground. I have new respect for the 305 - 307! Thanks!
Me amd my dad are currently doing a few things to a 70 model 307 that he put in his 71 C10 some years back out his 70 C10 he totaled and ive got a bigger new cam and lifters to put in and its already straight piped with headers and im gonna get a dual plain intake and 4 barrel and take off the 2 barrel just simple stuff but this got me thinking about a rebuild kit and putting some flat tops in also
Should already have flat top in it from the factory already, 4 valve relief.
Thanks for doing an old-school Chevy and not a twin-turbo LS...as rare as they may be...we've all seen that one guy's channel who puts an LS in everything. Nice real street small block on the cheap!
Sure smokes the tires!
@@ViceGripGarage Is a fella gonna drop her in the Camaro? Possibly weld the diff? Factree.
@Richard Skipper Meeeee tooooo! That's why VGG is my fave...along with the hilarious jargon!
Cool to watch the old videos and see where he came from and now he’s a millionaire and is still cranking out amazing videos. Love this guy
You missed your call !…you’re funny as hell, but very knowledgeable!…🤓
thanks
I have a 307 in my 84 cutless supreme. BUT.! I put vortec heads on it. Runs great.
With the vortec heads, you got a better air and gas flow right, but did they fit ok, did the coolant holes match up
@Pete shea I'm assuming he swapped a Chevy in. I believe the 80's Cutlasses had Olds V8s or Buick V6s from the factory but I'm not 100% sure.
OUTSTANDING CHANNEL. This is the best review from teardown, cleanup, buy parts info, assemble and dyno all in 30 minutes. PERFECT.
This guys a hoot! Definitely good content. I'm hooked.... funny feller
krazn8 just watched for first time and I agree!
Derek is the funniest guys
Another great video. Prove you don’t have to mortgage your home to enjoy your projects.
This why I subscribed
Yes funny and he's a pretty fart smeller , I mean smart feller, and that's fine
This flat makes my whole week just a bit brighter!
use the oil pan to catch the coolant when you flip the engine on the stand.
nice
The sound at 5500 is absolutely wonderful.
Love the Gadsden Flag in the back. Now I appreciate Derek even more.
The flag to the right of it is a suppressor with the star representing the Lone Star State. I had to subscribe when I saw those, I had no choice.
I like the flag on the back wall
Love the fellow.. talkin like him... taught me to be low budget on everything. no cam bearings needed.... never would have thunk of that.
Cork ends..No issues...Glue 'em to the block first about an hour ahead of time...A little RTV in the corners and all is hunky dory...She's a stout little bugger.
Congrats on 50K subs!
Honestly, I'm shocked you don't have way more, assumed you were around at least 100k!
Quarter million right around the corner now
I just started the video and decided to comment first.
Thank you Steven
That was amazing, nice job, I rebuilt my little Reliant Robin 850cc, she blow a piston hole, so managed to get a second hand piston and fitted new rings to all 4 pistons , luckily No 4 did not damage the Bore so just homed them all in, and gas flowed the head, she runs a treat , and for a little Engine she kicks ass lol the rebuild is on my channel, Can't wait to see that lump you did back in car and give her some stick, love your channel Derek.
"They run like OJ Simpson." Ha!
I heard another good one on that movie, Ready Player One."
"They'll be all over that like ho's on Santa!"
Being chased by the police...
OJ Simpson from 1970, or OJ Simpson from 2019?
My best laugh of the day lol
Sitting in the back of a Bronco?
