ABANDONED Chevelle will it RUN AND DRIVE 600 Miles Home?

  • I take a 1200 Mile Road Trip for a 1966 Chevelle Rescue. I put together a 355 small block chevy with some parts laying around the garage. I loaded that up and drove it to North Dakota, where I purchased this 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle site unseen. I spent weekend putting in the motor and transmission - then attempt a first start with the new engine followed by the long ride home alone!

sometimes what also helps is a cup of laundry detergent in the radiator, and take it for a run. Acts like a washing machine, and then dump out all the crud it washed and refill. I like to lift up the front end, let the air bubbles in the system find the highest spot (like bubbles in a soda pop glass) and then burp the entire system with a big funnel.

Car guys don't believe me, when I tell them about I had a 1970 red camero with a 3 speed and a 307 engine. We brought a used 4 barrel 350 engine and installed it. We took out the heads to have it valve job. So I was running the 307 small valve heads on it for about 3-4 week, and guess what, it was a torque monster & because it had the 3 .
speed and the long 1 .
gear it was perfect and punchy vs the 350 later when the head came back we put it in and you had to wait till 2,500 till it pulled. I wasent happy cause even in 2 th low it was soggy. So we change it back.a 350'with 307 heads LOL yea the 350 head could rev higher but not fun. I wanted a long first gear no fuss long pull and any gear pullout like a big block and this crazy engine was the best street set up. Everybody say no no you need bigger valve for air flow.
Nope not with a 3 speed I would fly by shifting into 2th like your stopped. LOL but above 60 is where he pass me. LOL

I am a new subscriber. This is the first video I have seen of yours. I love your humor and ability. I am in Canada. I don't know if you have heard of a TV show called Red Green but you are a perfect entertainment match with the title character. Its an older show. It is probably aired in the States so you've maybe seen it. That is meant as a total compliment.

It would be cheaper to take a trailer & go get the car, but probably not as interesting.
You are so lucky in the US that all 50 states don't have a state inspection of fitness. In the UK we do. That says that you can't exhume a car from a barn, or wherever and drive it back to where it needs to be at. It has to be taxed, tested & insured before you can even push it across the road. English cars have been unibodies for many years & rust is a serious problem.
Really old iron is conspicuously absent because car ownership was a luxury until long after WW2.
You would not get very far in a total beater like that El Camino. Too many CCTV cameras in urban areas.

Dang, it's a stick shift car! There's a bonus! I had to convert my grandmother's 66 two door 300 model to 4 speed and dropped a .040" over 427 I built into it. Basically a 390 hp 427 engine. Runs faster now that it will stop. Got the parts to fix that but haven't had the time.
