    If your plan is in PDF, Adobe allows you to scale print it using the setting in "Page Sizing and Handling" section in the "Print" menu. The plan will be printed as a mosaic on multiple pages that need to be assembled. I believe it can add registering marks to help line-up the pages. If I remember correctly, it may take a few try to get the scale factor just right. Some kind of light box is useful to assemble the pages into a plan. Also, computer printer can "drift" a bit on printing causing long lines to be off by a little from one end of the page to the other, so a long ruler is useful to insure that the reference line (mid fuselage, main spar) is one straight line. In any case, period plans are seldom perfect anyway!
    Another possibility is to load the plan in some drawing program, retrace it (or part of) then hide the plan and print the retrace. This is useful when plan is scale-up a lot giving fuzzy thick pixelized lines after magnification.

    Very good explanation of scaling using ratios. A much easier method, for a small amount of money (10 euros), is a program called IsiPlot. It allows you to import your image and define the distance of any handy measurement on the plan. It can the scale bar, that was published on many plans, or you could define the size of 1/2 of the wing panel as 15 inches as in your demonstration. Once that has been done, can print the full-size plan, if you have an appropriate printer, or save the file and take it down to your local printing center to have them do it. You can also print the plan in a tiled output and tape the pieces together. I don't have any relationship with the author but have been using the program for over 10 years and have been very happy with it.

    I scaled up a flight test mini Mustang plan. (Plans are free on their web site. ) Worked out the factor I needed for a full foam board version and used a feature in Adobe Reader (free) that lets you tile and print the enlarged plans. Easy and no sketching.

    Can you do a tutorial on how to take a full size plan and shrink it down to a smaller scale. I would like to downsize a .40 and .60 size plans down to a park scale size or smaller.
    It would be great if you could make that happen! Maybe your two best friends could help you with that one as well!😃

      SR: Thanks for checking in! Super easy to go the other way. If you have a smaller sized plan printed out on your computer. Say the wing measures 6" on the plan and you want your model to have an 18" wingspan, just multiply all plan dimensions by three. If the plan is full size: Say the wing now measure 60" and you want a 12" span. 12/60 = 0.2. Multiply all full size plan dimensions by 0.2. Tim

    Hello! When you talk about "full sized plans," to me that means plans for the construction of a full sized airplane...that you can literally climb aboard and fly without servos. I am not a RC modeler nor am I an aviation engineer. Building a model airplane isn't a problem for me. Up-scaling it is another matter, though. I know math very well as well as ratios, but will a full-sized airplane have the same aerodynamic characteristics as a 1/72 model, as long as all the proportions/ratios are correct?If not, is this why you see a model B-52 with a wingspan of say 4' leap off the ground after a 10' take off roll? I need help with this, since I want to design and build my own WIG effect craft, that I can climb in and fly. Thanks for help you may have to offer. Dan

    • @TimMcKay56
      @TimMcKay56  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Dan: With model aircraft the term full size plan means a plan size that matches the model’s completed size. For example, if the model’s wingspan is 50” then the plan wing diagram is a full 50”. The wing is built directly on the plan with wood sizes as drawn.
      Aerodynamic characteristics will vary with model size. As a general rule the larger models fly better. Tim

    I'm in process of taking a walt mooney design the hollandair-libel and enlarging it . using the same method . but using millimeters so can be more accurate . I'll of course be adding more ribs spaced as needed . plus for the tail feathers will use 1/16 inch balsa with a layer of 1/64 balsa cross grained in center (pretty much a balsa ply ) but with cut outs for the hinges , stronger than 1/8 plus hinges are perfectly straight and center that way .

      another thing you can do is draw a box around the rib with a reference line through the center . then draw vertical lines lets say every 1/4 or 1/2 inch from front of box . make an enlarged drawing of the box with lines adjusted to proper distance and measure each spot on plan , do the math and transfer to the enlarged box . I use millimeters to get more accurate measurements

    Somebody thought it necessary to explain to factor up. So all you need to know is simple mathematics. What a concept. Not a hater, just thought there would be better way. You still need to draw the outline and locate formers, ribs, etc. Too time consuming. And, your going to make mistakes as your doing the drawing. When was the last time you scaled up or down a rib and did a perfect job? And the french curves necessary to draw such. Holy smokes. Just human. Who's going to check your drawing? Let's be realistic shall we? Spend the $10 ( or whatever ) at Staples. They can factor what you need, and no drawing necessary. Done.
