great information! You explain things really well for us noobs especially. taking notes for my first forays into this great hobby along with my two kids!
Thank you Tim for this video which opened my eyes to form board planes. I have a Great Grandson who is going to be four years old, we are very close to one another, and I think building and flying the planes will pique his interest. I hope I can call upon you to guild me in the process.
Frank: Thanks for your feedback. I have a new video, out on Feb 14th, of a super simple square foam airplane. Flies so well could be a trainer. Best of luck with your great grandson! Tim
The dollar store one with the black paper peels off a lot easier if you go in your bathroom while the shower is on hot. The steam helps to get it off in bigger peices. I got mine off in 1 20x30 inch peice.
Thank you. I've just acquired a load of 6mm and 3mm Depron and found you video very useful. I wouldn't have thought of using hot glue and packing tape - useful tips.
Thank you, Tim! As mentioned by other commenters, very good information! Picked up some tips for working with foam board for some slightly different project.
Thank you, I’m new to this but am really enjoying the way you teach the subject. Makes me think I can do this and it should cost a million dollars anymore. Thank you so much.
This is an awesome video 😊! I would also love a video on how to make a simple small airframe I don’t even need measurements I kind of just want the idea! Again thanks so much 😄
Have you used the Flitetest foam board techniques? Removing the paper definitely removes weight however the foam board can be waterproofed which prevents delamination.
I use hinge tape on all my control surfaces I actually cut my control surfaces and will use either some index cards and cut small strips as my hinges and just glue it into the edges after I cut a slit on each edge then I will weave my hinge tape and I have never had a control surfaces rip or break
Very useful video for us the begginers. The black board can be spread with alcohol and will detach easily. I really learn many thing with your videos, Please consider models with KFM airfoilsm they are easier to build. A link to the materials would be very useful for begginer builders. Thanks for the videos! Alex
And on Amazon you can get a 6 pack of each color of a roll of packing tape it's very thin and goes on very easy and looks great and strengthens the model as well and water proofs it I cover my foam board first with packing tape then I cut all my pieces so I cover the whole piece of foam board first cover like two or three of them then lay out your templates and plans and get to cutting
Thank you for the interesting and informative video 🙂 I was thinking of using foam sheets as a lighter alternative to balsa wings for small 1/2A R/C (glow & diesel) models. As such, would you know if this material is suitably durable and fuel-proof ?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge do you have a video or plans to build the little backyard flyer I thought it would be a good starter plane for my son.
Seth: I just added a link for the plans in the video description. Plans are pretty much a "TurboCAD sketch," but there is a 6" ruler for scale, and the plane is all straight lines. Tim
🌴 So on the dollar store black foam , I realize that removing the paper removes weight, it seemed pretty light with it on ? Could a plane be built with the paper on and then sprayed with something to seal it and make it durable🤔 say clear polyurethane or brushed or parapet with thinned wood glue ? It would add to the adhesion and seal the surfaces and make it more of a hard surface , and more structurally sound, it would seem to me that the extra weight could be over seen with a bigger motor or prop ?
Chris: For a constant chord wing, GC is 25% back from the leading edge. As for the length of the fuselage and size of the tail surfaces, to be honest, I eyeball it and draw something that looks about right. And if in doubt, make the surfaces a bit larger. Tim
Sure. Just get a three view of a Slow Stick. Say the measured wingspan is 10”. Simply multiply all of the 3 view dimensions by 6, sketch out the full size plans (all straight lines) and build it! Tim
@TimMcKay56 can you lead me to a suitable wing as slow stick is a molded wing. I want a dollar tree (2 panels) wing since im looking for 60". Stab and tail could be dollar tree foam. Also, ( don't care) ailerons or not? ( been flying many years) Thanks! P.S. I do have a slow stick. Would rather a big one than an "old fogey)
Great content! Any suggestions on component kits? Is there any kit that has motor, prop, servos that are the correct size for these smaller planes that you're building?
Charles: The link should be there. Same plans as the original Bronco video I made, perhaps check the Description of the original Bronco. Plane flies great! Tim
@@TimMcKay56 am I wrong? 1 inch corresponding to 2,54cm or 25,4mm. Thanks for all informations. Thank you Tim for your videos. quick question, I see this Flysky FS-i6X transmitter on amazon which is cheaper than the Spektrum models. any drawbacks with this transmitter?
Gihan: I do not have any experience with the Flysky products. Taking a look at Amazon, the reviews seem positive, maybe give it a chance. As RC plane crashes are such a pain in the neck, I like to find the best products out there. Spektrum seems to lead the pack (they introduced 2.4 GHz technology in 2004, for example). Would balsa wood be better than popsicle sticks or other wood? Its still light & is a hardwood
Sure, you can try this. Maybe a bit denser grain of balsa.
Is eps foam good for planes?
Yes, it is. I just do not have much experience with eps foam. Tim

How do to cut to shape I.e the wings for air flow
I leave front and trailing behind edges square, but try to add some airfoil curve to the wing.

So the plane you fly in the last video..
Does it have a adjustable throttle and just Rudder and elevator

Hi... on the the high wing small aircraft that you built...
What size KV motor is it do you know and also what size ESC..... must be just like a 5 amp

If you spray the board with normal sanitary alchool and wait for 5 minutes, all the paper comes off.
