    I don't know how to put this into words, but as someone who grew up with a lot of internalized misogyny, the character of Jess always meant so much to me. There was something radical about having a character of a popular show be unabashedly feminine. I know rachel is too, but it's just not the same. Maybe it's sexist jokes or plot points that kinda undercut the power of the character of Rachel, not sure.

    • @simdivya
      @simdivya 2 года назад +33

      i feel like friends sometimes laughed *at* rachel for some of her more feminine traits. jess always completely owned her femininity but never made fun of other women who were different - or was criticised when she did (thinking of an argument between her and cece). that was probably bc of elizabeth meriwether tbh, fantastic writer

    first of all, really interesting take on the core ingredients of a sitcom, and the use of cameras and similar narratives in it.
    for me what's significantly different is "new girl" nonsense humor especially between the guys, and thats why its fricking hilarious for me.
    the fact they dont really want to change but other people kind of make them to maintain healthy relationships is what keeps it going

  • @billc5433
    @billc5433 2 года назад +147

    There's definitely a lot of similarities between the two shows (and the others you mentioned) but in the end I think the concept of "attractive 20 somethings living together" is a trope. The "Will They Won't they" arc is one that writers use because they get themselves stuck in how to write relationships, and Winnie the Bish wasn't really a well defined character until much later in the series.

  • @DJstankDaddy0161
    @DJstankDaddy0161 2 года назад +71

    I feel like it's completely different to friends 🤷‍♂️ I admit it does have some details that cross over but I feel that's just stereotypes that the audience can relate to so when they deliver thier stories you feel engaged with the characters bc most of that they are conveying you have experienced in some way. It just happened that the audiences issues and lifestyles haven't changed that much between the release of the shows.

    There is nothing new under the sun. Friends was inspired by the sitcoms that came before. Early television was inspired theater and radio. Those were inspired the written word. And that was inspired by simple story-telling. The drama and comedy of our existence is timeless. The medium through which those stories are experienced may change. But the innate experiences of being human have been the same since we've stood upright and spoke.

A show named new girl probably didn't appeal very much to your average heterosexual man, I bet a huge chunk of them probably felt weird with the girly aesthetic of the theme song, before it got changed to a simple jingle. And just the name on its own, new girl, probably men felt like there was no room for them on a show like this, and you can't make a show as friends without appealing to men, you just can't leave them out of the conversation. I don't mean me, because I actually loved the show but at the time 2010's it was more of a guilty pleasure, but I'm sure there were a lot of guys out there that didn't even gave it a chance based on the name

    I don't know if anyone has thought this but I used to think that Frank and Marie Boyle (Everybody loves Raymond) were actually the older versions of Chandler and Monica Bing. The similarities between the two couples are quite a few. For eg, Monica and Marie are both highly controlling, micromanaging neat freaks. Both are amazing cooks. Chandler and Frank are both witty & cynical and wear the same kind of sweater vest. I would say that Chandler became cranky, mean and grumpy in his old age just like Frank. Both couples settled in the suburbs of New York. Yes their occupations differ and so do the types of children they had (Chandler and Monica adopted twins whereas Frank and Marie have biological sons).. It's just my own guilty pleasure to think so, just so I can imagine Chandler & Monica after their settling☺️

    Both are great but friends gave us 10
    Impecable seasons and new girls did only 8 and for me only 4 of them were really good the first ones of course. I like that new girl is based on LA and talks about older people not having it together at a certain age.

    I think the similarities are just sitcom stuff. The majority sitcoms have common characteristics, that's what makes them sitcoms. So what these two shows in common are that they're both sitcoms.

    A recipe can have the same basic ingredients but if it's prepared in a new way, it seems new. This is true in music, too. The folk song "You Are My Sunshine" and Jackson Five's "I Want You Back" are essentially the same song in content but the tune is different so few noticed. Plenty of other examples just like that one.

    New Girl was so great at the beginning but kinda becomes frustrating. Especially when Nick and Jess break up for basically no reason and they drag out their romance to try to fit that friends narrative. It's glaringly obvious to see how many connections it has with Friends (Because let's face it, you can relate anything and everything to a friends episode) and they probably took creative license with that because it's just a smart move. I just felt like the show loses it's zest and they could have come up with more creative ideas for episodes some times... it's still an obviously amazing and funny show though.

    The copying of a sit-com basic set-up isn't uncommon. How many times can you watch the "four friends/roomates/co-workers hang out together" concept and not start seeing it as a copy of Golden Girls or Facts of Life or Girlfriends or Designing Women or Living Single or How I met Your Mother or Being Human. I'm sure if I look, I might find this format going back further than the 80s. Did Happy Days count or was that too focused on the family?

    the strength of new girl is that every character could be the funny one of the episode or the emotionnal of the episode without lowering the level of the episode. in friends, when one of the 4 characters that, in the beginning, were there just for fun (aka Monica, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey) becomes emotionnal, the episode is less good. The whole ark where Joey is in love with Rachel was awful bc Joey works as a comedic character not as a dramatic one. Same things when Chandler and Monica are serious about their relationship. When Schmidt is serious about his relationship with Cece, it makes no problem.
