One of the worst for me is when Rachel specifically said “we should go on a break” and then got mad at Ross for cheating on her despite the fact that she was the one who said it in the first place.
that episode honestly doesn’t feel canon but it’s just too great to ignore. the part where ross tries so hard to figure out what to do after is a top 10 moment in the series imo
I think in a 10 year period when you show flashback scenes, it works but today when we binge entire shows like this in a month or so, it seems unnecessary.
At least we can skip these episodes when we're binging. Imagine if you're watching the show as it comes out every week. You had a shitty week at work, in personal life, and you are looking forward to watching the latest episode of Friends and lift your mood and they decide to make it a clip show episode. I feel bad for people who watched Friends as it came out in the 90s.
@@hittingyouoverthehead It wasn’t bad. Remember in the 90s we had no streaming or on demand watching. Most shows were not available for purchase on VHS and if they were, they were very expensive. Most people also could not afford to tape each show and keep it. You had a few tapes you used to record and would write over them after watching your shows. So clip shows in the 90s were reminders of what had gone before because we didn’t binge the show nor could we. What happened last season or in season 1 might be a bit foggy, so clip shows help remind you and give you some laughs you probably haven’t seen in a year or more - at least in the case of Friends. While that started to change by the end of Friends run as DVD sets became common, those also started out as being expensive. So it was part of the landscape in the 90s and it worked because we did not have instant access to the whole show or the ability to binge watch it. It made for a cheap episode but also made for one that could refresh the audience’s memory over many long seasons. Friends also didn’t have any clip shows until season 4, a time when remembering what had happened would have been necessary. It worked in the context of when it was made. Far less necessary now when we stream
For me the worst episode was where Rachel and Joey tried having sex, and ultimately realised that they are not made for each other...that was the worst plot in entire friends
Awful. They could've been great together. Joey was an amazing friend to Rachel and Ross hurt her way too many times. Awful writing towards the last seasons
The entire reason why that happened was because of negative audience reception at the end of season 9. Anniston and LeBlanc also didn't like the couple and thought it was completely out of character for their characters. Which is why they only go out for like 2 episodes in Season 10 before breaking up. It seems like after Monica and Chandler got married, the writers were really running out of ideas to keep the show engaging so they started creating artificial drama. From some of the interviews the creators had, they weren't thinking of Ross and Rachel getting back together until the second half of season 10.
That's one of the general few critiques I have for friends.. sharpening their extreme characteristics. Joey only got dumber after season one and Monica had severe OCD by the end of the show. Chandler was always the dork.. I wish they put some more work into their character arcs.
It's literally "The One Where Joey Speaks French" haha, and while it's a very dumb plotline and probably the low point of Joey's flanderization, I think it's rescued somewhat by Matt LeBlanc's performance. His delivery of the nonsense French still gets a laugh out of me despite my best efforts.
I also hated that episode, I felt they went too far sometimes with Joey not being the sharpest tool in the shed, and this episode is one of the best (or worst?) example of that tendency, however, this problem is not exclusive to Friends, many sitcoms tend to start with some quirky character, and as the seasons go by those quirky traits tend to get more outlandish.
@@Daniel-gj2cd yeah sometimes friends go out of their way to show that joey’s dumb but not really until s5, when he kept counting houses to find a girl and he kept showing up at ross’ place. with that being said it’s not like every single episode has joey looking extremely dumb remember it’s a sitcom some episodes are going to be more grounded than others
The thing is that now, they are less of a nuisance because you can just skip the episode if you don't like it and you don't even miss any plot. But back when episodes were premiering (say, weekly), you wait all week to watch just to find out there is nothing new added at all.
I don't think you were a product of that time. Friends was one of the most the most popular shows ever by the mid 90s and i remember many many re runs and hour blocks of friends but not just at 8pm on Thursdays only on NBCs must see TV. Clip shows were a major let down when they originally aired. They were a product of a 24 episode contract and deeper cost cutting than the bottle could even do.
I never minded the clip episodes. According to me, the least favourite ones are 1) when Phoebe thinks the cat is her mom 2) when ross tried to kiss her cousin 3) joey speaking french 4) s10e1 , where charlie - ross and rachel - joey try to hookup 5) where pete tries boxing.. or wrestling i don't remember, never watched it after the first time
I actually liked the MMA one. Sure, Pete was being idiotic. But, out of the group, Monica always had the most mature, reasonable breakups and this was no exception.
@@usagi18 sure its funny on the first watch but then you realise they've dumbed down joey so much that he can even speak basic french. Like c'mon, he isn't THAT dumb
@@SeanHunterMusic I didn't mind the shake-up in the dynamic. I found her and Ross's final get-together a disappointment because they were terrible together
I thought for sure that you'd bring up the Barbados episodes, which focuses almost entirely on the love square between Rachel, Joey, Ross and Charlie, as well as Phoebe trying to choose between Mike and David.
I thought based on my own research that the worst episode of "Friends" was the episode where Phoebe tried to keep someone's cat for herself and she and everyone else told off Ross for not supporting it; the episode was written by one of the co-creators whose mother died leaving them very emotional, but also left the crew unwilling to shoot the episode down because they felt bad for her. An episode written under bad circumstances can be good if it's well-done, but THAT episode was the exact opposite.
There’s also the episode where Ross and Phoebe feud over evolution. As someone studying biology myself, the resolution of “have you considered maybe you’re wrong” pissed me off to no end. Evolution is fact. It’s been demonstrated numerous times and we have mountains of evidence to support it
Just rewatched it, for me the most frustrating friends episode is the one where phoebe drops the bowl with lottery tickets, and it turns out one of the tickets was 10 000$
That arguably makes it a good episode. As the audience watching everything unfold and knowing things the characters in the show don't know, making us feel frustrated for a understandably frustrating moment is a good thing. It's like complaining that a sad movie made us sad, we're suppose to feel that way. But I get you're trying to say that feeling frustrated or any negative emotion you didn't initially signed up for makes you want to avoid that episode to avoid those feelings, especially if it's because the characters are being stupid or made a stupid mistake.
For me the worst one was the one where Phoebe thought a stray cat was her dead mum. It was just a weird and slightly depressing episode that both the cast and head writers apparently hated, but they took it to air because the writer's mum had literally just died, hence the topic of the episode. It's really sweet that they did that for her, but it does NOT make good TV.
The One with The Apothecary Table, The One with Ross and Monica's Cousin, and The One Where Joey Speaks French are all far, far worse than any of the terrible clip shows.
At the end of the one where Joey speaks french, when the director says, "Good job little buddy!", That shits hilarious. I still say that when I'm being a condescending dick..
@Kaylamarie Vega It is funny, but it's one of those points where Friends dropped in terms of the quality of stories it told. It's just one big ad for Pottery Barn.
Avatar the last airbender was the only show to make a “clip show” work because it was a recap and told from the fire nations perspective. Sure it recalled the plot but also showed us how the fire nation misled its people.
They moved his mental age from full adult to about one year old. There are animals like parrots that can repeat sounds. Joey clearly suffered a serious head injury at some point.
@@mankytoes The funny thing is, I usually find dumb characters funny. Joey kinda teetered on the edge of super dumb, but still human. I feel like the french thing basically solidified him as, like you said, a glorified 1 year old.
I'm not going to lie to you I hated most of season 7. Except for the season finale which was Chandler and Monica's wedding because that cliffhanger was awesome, when Phoebe said I can't believe Monica and Chandler are going to have a baby, and then the camera zooms in on Rachel and you realize Rachel's the one who's pregnant. That was awesome!!
I think the worst one is where Rachel throws a party for his crush ....dresses as a cheer leader too and makes a fool of herself. Feels bad to see the scene
If I was to watch that episode again it would through my hands from behind the sofa. And the way Rachel constantly pronounces the name Joshua is more than a little annoying.
You are right.....I mean no offense to Rachel and Joey pair.....as my personal opinion I admired them as a real friends who live Together as roomies, but suddenly they Started that the love is growing between them 😑. I always loved the pair "Ross and Rachel"❤️
@@vinothkumarmv3754 imo both of the pairs weren't good. Joey and Rachel seemed to come out of nowhere and felt like the creators were running out of ideas. Ross and Rachel were after all a terrible couple and the dynamic relationship was very toxic.
Joey AND rachael was weird and uncomfortable for the viewers they stopped it in a week, i remember watching it as a kid and got weirded out and stopped watching the show until I heard they stopped the Joey x Rachael thing
My favourite clip show episode was in South Park where they’re stuck on the school bus and can’t leave it so they start to reminisce of old events except they tell the story wrong every time.
I tend not to count the clip show episodes as actual episodes because of their very cobbled-together nature. With that in mind, The One with the Male Nanny is by far my least favorite.
@@jonnnnniej Yep. I usually defend Ross’ actions, but this episode was just too much. But at the same time, the other two plots were kinda boring, and it’s also the longest episode in the whole show which makes it even more egregious.
I did like the fact that Ross admitted the fact that he was only uncomfortable with the Male Nanny because he learned it was "bad", and he had his own trauma regarding his dad saying "what's wrong with you? That's not manly" And then that all got thrown in the trash and the Male Nanny had to get another job anyway and Ross never addressed this lesson again
You didn't really go over the episodes, you just talked about clip shows in general. What was the thin plot? Why is the wedding vow ep better than invitation? This RUclips video could have been done about ANY clip show episode.
I never minded clips shows, they’re fun mostly and they show how far the characters have come, but my favorite kind of clip shows are what progress the character development in that episode or season, like Castle for example, while Kate is terrified, Castle is distracting her with memories of who liked who first lol that kind of thing stands out more than random clip shows showing different moments
That would have made so much sense for that show. It started at my final year of High school, I watched a bit of it cos my mum watched it. I went to uni and didn’t watch any in that time. Four years later I am walking through the living room and Kate and Castle are getting it on and I thought WHAT MADNESS IS THIS I AM SO CONFUSED.
@@amypattie7004 I discovered the show by seeing someone else watching it on a laptop, I was on a bus so it wasn’t clear to see, I was seats away, but I could still glimpse at it sometimes I checked it out when I got home on my computer 1x1 and got hooked immediately, since 2013 of discovery I’ve been a fan
Miraculous had the first clip show I actually liked for the same reason. The show is repetitive (being a kids show) and the clip show showed what had actually changed and how the characters had developed. It was nice to see that the ploy wasn't stagnant
I have to disagree, the way they introduced the flashbacks was pretty original, they did use music and other recurrent details. For me the transitions were pretty clear. Also, it was nice to see characters in different stages of their development and how consistent or contrasting they were.
It was a stupid thing to continue the stupid “will they, won’t they” storyline of Ross and Rachel. Ross and Rachel were at a point in their lives where they were both great for each other. They grew closer, Rachel was ready to settle down, Ross had gotten over his insecurities and expanded his dating repertoire, and they were having a baby. Them getting together in season 9 made the most sense, but since they got renewed for a 10th season, they did the stupid Rachel Joey thing no one asked for
@@purplewine7362 i don't it's really that funny , i mean ross keeps saying I'm fine for so long in the same tone is funny at start but the writers stretched it too long
One of my favorites is where there was a blackout in season 1. The show definitely had other episodes with better writing but to me that episode was just great in terms of lighting and directing. Season 1 was not the strongest season but what it had that the later seasons didn’t have was that the show didn’t feel like an over-lit sitcom.
I mean, I have a soft spot for the 138th episode spectacular... And they fulfilled the prophecy... "What adventures will they have between now and the time the show becomes unprofitable..."
I think the most annoying part about clip episodes with Friends was that they had one of those episodes in almost EVERY season. Not even an old show without syndication needs that much recap, guys.
The reason was because there was a huge boycott from the writers because they weren't being paid enough so they had to make shortcuts. They had one every season but their was also a particular season where there was a bunch of them because of that reason.
While I'm a diehard Friends fan, I agree with your critique. While I understand that clip shows are a way of getting around filming extra footage by using preexisting footage, you could simply watch the entire season again, and not miss a thing!
I think the clip shows are just a product of their time, really - when Friends was airing, especially toward the beginning, you COULDN'T just watch the entire season again.
Except back when it aired you couldn’t do that. We didn’t even have dvr. So you watched the new weekly episode when it came on or you watched the seasons in reruns on syndication. The clips also aren’t from that season. They’re from several seasons past so they’re showing clips not seen for years.
@@dallasrose761 it's in the later seasons. I think it's phoebes birthday and everybody is late so they have to sit on a really small table because their reservation got taken away because only Joey and phoebe were on time
In my honest opinion, the worst episodes of Friends are “The One with the Tea Leaves” and “The One with the Sharks.” These two episodes basically had the cringiest, weirdest plot lines I’d seen in the series. In the first case, while people have pointed out unbelievable moments of Joey stupidity in cases like him paying for a private preschool puppet show or speaking French in the most absurd ways, I think this one had a double whammy of unbelievable stupidity coming from him and Rachel with Rachel coming up with the idiotic “my boss wants to buy my baby” and Joey not just believing that, but also confronting her boss. The boss bending over backwards to settle things with her made no sense either. Then you had Phoebe believing that an obvious creep was her soulmate and going on a really over the top short date. That was too obvious and not the least bit funny. Ending with Alec Baldwin’s cameo appearance at least set up her story in the next episode, but it was of little solace for what it took to get there. Same could be said with Ross sneaking into Mona’s apartment to get his shirt. Seriously, just come another time when she’s home and ask for the damn shirt back. The only storyline that was mildly funny in that episode was with Monica and Chandler in which Monica discovers that Chandler had hopelessly mismatched their CD collections with the wrong cases, which played to Monica’s compulsive behavior, but it was pretty forgettable. And yeah, the one with the Sharks. The title conflict was another instance of a misunderstanding that was too stupid to believe. Monica seriously couldn’t figure out that Chandler had flipped the channel as she was walking in? Phoebe and Ross had a storyline where Ross lied to Mike about a fake relationship Phoebe had been in, and the entire bit was just cringe. Joey’s thing about experiencing deja vu from being in his date’s apartment was the only portion that was entertaining and was actually pretty believable for his character, so props there. Clip shows, while Friends definitely had too many and only one (The One with Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E.) was actually really well done, aren’t necessarily the worst things in the world. And compared to the episodes I named, I could at least enjoy some callbacks to some excellent Friends moments as opposed to what’s in those
I didn't mind Mac & Cheese, atleast it had clips of different contexts - Chandler & Joey's friendship, Ross & Monica's mean bosses, etc. The worst IMO was the Christmas clip show in the 9th season with Chandler's stuck in Tulsa and reminisces about all the christmases with the group
The one that bugged me the most was the one where they were in a different universe where things happened differently for them? I have never managed to catch it in full but the bits I remember is that Monica’s fat and Joey’s like really famous or something? Idk, I think it’s worse to me than a clip show because it’s a clip show with less context or impact on the actual story.
Sorry, I found this video confusing. I kept waiting for the explanation of clip shows to end and the analysis of the two episodes to begin i.e. a scene by scene walkthrough pointing out the issues. I still don't have a feel for how each of the episodes are written, paced, problems with the dialog etc. in specific detail, beyond the vague generalities you gloss over. Sorry for the negative view but this didn't hit me like your other videos do.
@@Nerdstalgic thanks for replying, glad to know you saw this. If I could summarize my thoughts in one sentence: The TITLE of your video tells me you will be deep diving the worst Friends episode, but the CONTENT of your video is a thesis on clip shows, with Friends episodes being some of the examples used. The mismatch is unsatisfying.
Thought it was just me - it tells us a problem and that it is present in Friends but doesn't show a huge amount of how it plays out and where it went wrong
@@tonymitsuThe whole point of the episode was showing how Ross was uncomfortable until he's proved wrong ffs It's not supposed to cater to your desire of a real life, it's to play with the idea of "too good to be true"...
The worst episode was the one where it briefly looked like Monica was going to choose Richard over Chandler. I have never hated any episode of television more than I hated that one. The worst part is, the ending makes it unskippable.
The worst episode was when Ross was trying to get everyone ready and out of the apartment to attend an event with him. That episode makes me so anxious. To add insult to injury Ross has to apologize when everyone else was being inconsiderate.
Boy Meets World has one of the best clip show episodes imo. For starters, it was the two-part series finale which made perfect chronological sense, but on top of that, the way which it’s executed is ingenious; a character acknowledges an ongoing trope form the show’s 7-year run, then it immediately cuts away to every single instance in which it occurred during prior episodes. There’s a real storyline for both episodes obviously, but the way they pulled it off with the clip show made for the perfect sendoff to an iconic series
I loved Boy Meets World very much. I learned about it after I learned about Girls Meets World as I didn't know that GMW was actually a spinoff. I literally slept during the first episode of GMW and didn't understand what was happening why there were clapping sounds when Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel entered in. I then learned that there actually was a series called BMW in 1990's and decided watch the original one and completely fell in love. There are of course plot holes, but I think Shawn has the best character development I have ever seen. I also liked Eric very much from the beginning and think he was actually carrying the show. In the finale, I literally cried because it was very emotional. I agree that they did the clip episodes very well because the scenes didn't feel like they were stealing the whole episode, they were on point. I am so happy to find an appreciation comment of BMW and just wanted to write few of my opinions :)
8:05 that could've been cut down to this simple 0:05 explanation. "Both episodes are clip episodes". Or the video could've been retitled "The history of clip episodes and why they suck now".
For me, it's not any specific episode but the parts where Phoebe goes overboard with being weird(like thinking her mother's soul is in a cat or her friend's soul is in a pencil), where Chandler's jokes are senseless and he tries too hard to be funny and where Joey is depicted to be really dumb(like in that celebrity quiz show)
I remember iCarly did a clip show episode that tweaked a bunch of scenes from past episodes. Phineas and Ferb also made a joke about it, where everyone pauses to have flashbacks and is technically the origin of the “If I had a nickel” meme.
The worst episode was when everyone played alternative lives as to what had happened if Ross didn’t divorce his first wife, and Rachel married Barry but later meets Joey and acts like a groupie and all this other twists that were awkward and awful.
The one with the invitation really wasn't that bad of an episode. Yeah, I get it that it's filled with flashbacks but it added to the story of the episode even though it was meant to be a filler episode. Come to think of it, this is exactly what most of us would do if we found out that someone close to us (especially an ex that we really loved) suddenly gets married. We look back at our memories with that person. Additionally, we knew as viewers that the Rachel-Ross love story ain't just gonna end there especially with how they built it up in the previous seasons. This episode set up the event (that we all know now) that would follow in the season finale, sort of a foreshadowing. There were meh moments but it surely wasn't the worst episode.
I've always felt that 2 things never worked on most sitcoms. Even great ones Flashbacks scenes and vacation episodes. Both feel so lazy and out of context. The first being one of the reasons I never liked Saved By the bell for example ( Which was very average anyway) I've always felt that Frasier was the greatest sitcom of all time and they had a fantastic scene For any fans of it there is actually a scene where Frasier is wanting to go all out for daphne's wedding and has a big rehearsal at his place. Martin then rémanence about his own wedding and you can feel the flashback coming. " I remember it like it was yesterday" and then the Harp music starts and last quite a long time. Everyone looks confused until they realize it was an actual Harp player from the wedding rehearsal working on his piece 😂😂 Brillant dig at the sitcom cliche
@@Nerdstalgic and many other shows to be fair. But yeah Friends even had a whole episode based on flashback with " What could have been" situations and yeah I much prefer the regular friends episodes
Big vacation episodes often feel like advertisements. They generally feel like they break the character's personalities for the sake of setup. Small vacation episodes that don't actually leave the city are fine though, generally. Psych comes to mind.
@@coolestgyever531 Yeah I agree that's why I said " Vacation" episodes and not " Holidays" episodes. For example they are some fantastic sitcom Christmas episodes
This is why I love the Fly episode in Breaking Bad. They were low on cash but created something super unique with their limited means. The episode has the lowest average rating but at the same time it is the favorite episode of many people!
Uhhhh idk about this new narrator, his videos are pretty weak. It just seems like you’re repeating the same thing over and over. You didn’t even break down the episode. You’re talking a lot but have almost nothing to say.
while not my favorite episode of "Avatar The Last Airbender" by far, "The Ember Island Players"is a fantastic clip episode and well thought through, so I resent it being included in the lump of bad clip shows
I think Ember Island Players works because it's not a straight up clip show like the other examples. Yes, they recap all the major events of the entire series, but it's not done with existing recycled footage, they use the device of the play instead. And it's executed in an extremely tongue-in-cheek way with plenty of jokes poking fun at the characters and the show itself. Plus being a light-hearted funny episode recapping the story is a nice breather leading into the intense 4-part finale of the whole show.
The episode I hate the most is when Ross was going to give a speech and noone cares about being there in time. Seriously. They were such bad friends to Ross. If I had been him I would have ditched them and looked for new friends.
I think that the worst episodes are the sugar ones, when there's either too love or too heartbreak, those aren't for me, luckily they're kinda rare and all the rest is just fun friends having crazy fun together
Friends had 6 clip shows in 10 seasons. Meanwhile, The Simpsons had 5 clip shows in 32 seasons. And the only thing expensive about Friends was the ever increasing cast salaries. Season 7 had the Rachel/Joey sailing the Hudson River episode, which looked worse than Superman IV's visual effects.
Two episodes: the one with fake monica and the one with the coffee house bullies. can't say which one was worse, they both did so well. a honorable mention to the recurring joke of people remembering (or monana) their names wrong. it wasn't funny at the first time and it just kept getting worse by each of the like 20 times they pulled it off. even though i didn't like the reminisce episodes i don't really count them as worst, just because every show writers need some extra time to write the show sometimes.
For me, the worst episode Is the one when Phoebe thinks the cat Is her mother and makes everyone agree with her, even Ross has to Apologize to her for disagreeing with that.
The answer to "Why this was the WORST episode of _FRIENDS_ " is six words long: _Because it was a clip show._ Then you padded the video out with, you know, clips from old shows, making it (unironically) a clip show.
Why do people that don't like friends always have such a strong urge to tell people about how bad they think the show is? Honey, don't watch it. We get it, you're so smart. Now let others enjoy things
And why watch a video based on it? When someone makes a video on a show that I don’t like surprise surprise I don’t watch it because it’s a waste of my time
Maybe it's a counter reaction to that group of fans that have the strong urge to tell everyone how amazing it is, and will insist on trying to convert anyone who doesn't agree.
@@weescamp not seeing any of that here. Only 12 year olds showing their intellectual might because all they watch is Rick and Morty. No one is coming to your videos to try and convert you to it
@@gang9308 exactly, i don't understand why so many people came to the comments just to let us know that they don't watch the show. As if that makes them interesting or something
Whatever….the one with the vows was one of my favorite episodes. I love anything to do with Monica and Chandler and watching the turning points in their relationship. And I always love any flashbacks to high school or college.
Chandler watching shark porn? Really? That wasn't the worst? Honestly I don't think I remember the clip shows, I skip over them. I think South Park made fun of this well, when the boys were trapped in the bus and they kept remembering the same scene and it's constantly changing.
FRIENDS began to lower in quality for me post season 4, that's when the flanderization of the characters really began to get worse. Season 6 was just an absolute trainwreck imo too.
It was after the morning after epsiode that the show started to decline in quality cause I'll be honest, the ross and Rachel will they won't they drag the show down alot.
Have to disagree there. My favourite parts of the show are Monica and Chandler and they don't become a couple till season 4. For me personally, the show became way better after that.
The worst arc is the whole rachel joey -ross and charlie also the whole barbados stuff is very cringe . Before season 9 everything looks in continuity .Even the writers knew that audience is only sitting for ross and rachel getting back .the whole joey -Rachel fiasco was felt like incest. I mean in a long running sitcom it ' s the most worst idea to put the main couple of the show together in the last 3 minutes of the ending of show. Tbh i was only watching the show for them❤. And OMG in season 9 every character is acting like immature . They should have shown ross and rachel ' s character more developed after emma was born . Throughout the show ross was truly in love ❤ with rachel ,and just after emma was born that was the most purest and most emotional moment of the entire show . Season 9 and 10 felt like they have streched too much . Season 10 has the only 1 good thing "i got off the plane"😢❤❤
I'm a fan of the clip show, everyone works really hard on these shows and I don't see a problem with them showing off their favorite parts now and again. Plus you get a few cheap laughs and nostalgia.
by definition, those weren't really clip shows. paradigms of human memory and curriculum unavailable involve expensive productions that parody cheap clip show episodes of FRIENDS and other older sitcoms
Off topic, but 6:13 is one of my favorite moments on the show, this and the dummy falling off the stairs, they just pulled it off perfectly, as perfect as the routine lol.
David had worked with the director without telling Jennifer what they were going to do for the gag. Jennifer's reaction was pure and genuine because she really thought David had fallen down the stairs
The clip shows never really settled right with me, probably because I first watched Friends by binging it on dvd. The only one I think that works even just a little bit is the one when Monica and Chandler tell the rest of the gang they’re moving and they flashback to all the memories of the apartment and since it was the final season, that’s the only time a concept like this can truly work
I mean for a while friends had a clip show EVERY season, and usually had the same clips every time. It was like they just went “hey remember when this show was great?” That’s one of the things that honestly pushes friends really far down for me. The office had one clip show (the banker), community had no true clip shows, and the closest parks and rec came was a montage with a monologue dubbed over (for Leslie and ben’s wedding)
i really love this show so much, and i rewatch it every year a couple times. but i hate when in the lasts seasons Joey became stupider 🤦🏽♀️ it’s so cringy
Yes! When I watched for the first time, I didn't mind these episodes, but everytime I reawacth Friends (and I've done that over 15 times so far) I hate going through the flashback ones.
To me, it feels really cheap to call a clip show the "worst" episode of a series. Like, yeah, I guess by default they're the worst, but like, it is what it is, it's a collection of clips. Calling that the worst episode of a series is kind of like calling a greatest hits compilation an artist's worst album. Like, I guess technically it's the worst, but does it even COUNT as one? When you talk about "the worst episode" it should be about an actual instance of bad writing in an actual original episode of the show. A review of a clip show isn't a review of an episode, it's a review of the existence of clip shows.
Not sure if this is 100% a "clip-show" episode, but from the description, I thought I'd mention "TURN LEFT", an episode from the fourth series of DOCTOR WHO (New Who Specifically). Due to budget reasons, the episode basically had to reuse footage from prior episodes and series. HOWEVER, it used this footage to tell an alternate reality version of these events, cutting back to them so we can see how these events either stayed the same or changed in this new timeline forged. It's honestly a MASTERPIECE, one of the show's best, and it all came from having to reuse footage. Honestly, the episode is so good that you don't really think about it in this way (Unless some guy on RUclips points it out XD). Just thought I'd spotlight a great episode from my favorite show which this video reminded me of.
The worst episode for me was the one with chandlers new roommate where the roommate goes crazy because in the end chandler basically leaves the guy homeless and it kinda feels like they were making fun of mentally Ill people. It made me sad.

Definitely the clip show episodes, or the ones set in Barbados, since they were almost entirely focused on relationships and love entanglements.
For me the worst episode was the one where Ross tried to kiss his cousin... because Ross tried to kiss his cousin.
Tbf that cousin was Denise Richards in her prime.
That was a hilarious episode. The worst episodes are where people get happily married. Ross fucking up his union with Rachel ,I MEAN EMILY, was funny
Absolutely
😂
that episode honestly doesn’t feel canon but it’s just too great to ignore. the part where ross tries so hard to figure out what to do after is a top 10 moment in the series imo
I think in a 10 year period when you show flashback scenes, it works but today when we binge entire shows like this in a month or so, it seems unnecessary.
exactly
At least we can skip these episodes when we're binging.
Imagine if you're watching the show as it comes out every week. You had a shitty week at work, in personal life, and you are looking forward to watching the latest episode of Friends and lift your mood and they decide to make it a clip show episode. I feel bad for people who watched Friends as it came out in the 90s.
right
@@hittingyouoverthehead i loved blooper episodes in the 90s...atleast it was something different even if the story didn't progress.
The worst episode by far for me was when Rachel misunderstood Joey's proposal. I can't even tell if it was a joke or an actual plotline
Me tooooo ohmygod i always rewatch the series and skip this one

The best friends episodes are the ones that happen only in one room. It really forces the writers to be creative
You mean bottle episodes... I think Community said/did something with that once.
I agree. The one where they're throwing the ball is probably my fav one
I disagree. Shows that don’t change setting that often bore me. I personally need a change of setting every once in a while to be engaged
Aren't those just the clip show ones, or am I remembering it wrong?
Agree. The One Where No One's Ready is brilliant writing...
For me the worst episode was where Rachel and Joey tried having sex, and ultimately realised that they are not made for each other...that was the worst plot in entire friends
????? What
😐 yeah 😐
they just rushed the plot for that episode so that ross and rachel can get together at the end of the season
For me the worst one is when Joey tried to speak French (I can't remember the title), pure cringe. Joey's not THAT stupid

3) joey speaking french
4) s10e1 , where charlie - ross and rachel - joey try to hookup
5) where pete tries boxing.. or wrestling i don't remember, never watched it after the first time
Pete wanted to do Ultimate Fighting.
I actually liked the MMA one. Sure, Pete was being idiotic. But, out of the group, Monica always had the most mature, reasonable breakups and this was no exception.
Sadly, the cat episode was pitched by a writer who had just lost his mom and nobody felt comfortable saying no to it. So, a very sad episode

I really didn’t like it either
There’s also the episode where Ross and Phoebe feud over evolution. As someone studying biology myself, the resolution of “have you considered maybe you’re wrong” pissed me off to no end. Evolution is fact. It’s been demonstrated numerous times and we have mountains of evidence to support it

Phoebe used to piss me off so much in some situations.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT! "Don't blame the pretty lady, it was me the pigeon"
I love Ross's reluctance to give Phoebe the 50-cent winnings 😂

hahaha ikr it's like they're mocking shows like FRIENDS for having cheap clip show episodes

@@jonnnnniej Yep. I usually defend Ross’ actions, but this episode was just too much. But at the same time, the other two plots were kinda boring, and it’s also the longest episode in the whole show which makes it even more egregious.

Thanks for checking out the video
I think the clip shows are just a product of their time, really - when Friends was airing, especially toward the beginning, you COULDN'T just watch the entire season again.
But I do love the fake clip shows that Dan Harmon does
except that wasnt possible between 1994-2004 except watching it on syndication
Except back when it aired you couldn’t do that. We didn’t even have dvr. So you watched the new weekly episode when it came on or you watched the seasons in reruns on syndication. The clips also aren’t from that season. They’re from several seasons past so they’re showing clips not seen for years.

@@JustJadeJJ no that's the classic one from season three where everyone is in the apartment and we get the "Could I BE wearing any more clothes" line
And compared to the episodes I named, I could at least enjoy some callbacks to some excellent Friends moments as opposed to what’s in those
Can’t forget about the Mac and Cheese episode which is another clip show
And a random clip show at that
That one was the most random
I didn't mind Mac & Cheese, atleast it had clips of different contexts - Chandler & Joey's friendship, Ross & Monica's mean bosses, etc. The worst IMO was the Christmas clip show in the 9th season with Chandler's stuck in Tulsa and reminisces about all the christmases with the group

The death of clip shows is the best thing about modern TV
I always saw cutaways as like a meta, proud, look back at the current season. Like a "look how far we've come as a show" moment.
For me, it's not any specific episode but the parts where Phoebe goes overboard with being weird(like thinking her mother's soul is in a cat or her friend's soul is in a pencil), where Chandler's jokes are senseless and he tries too hard to be funny and where Joey is depicted to be really dumb(like in that celebrity quiz show)
I agree!! At some point joey was dumbed down to the point where I questioned how the actor was even okay with it..
Joey learning french was where they really made joey the stupidest character
I remember iCarly did a clip show episode that tweaked a bunch of scenes from past episodes. Phineas and Ferb also made a joke about it, where everyone pauses to have flashbacks and is technically the origin of the “If I had a nickel” meme.
I remember that! I think some of the flashbacks were Isabella's "Hey, Phineas! Whatcha doin?" and Phineas' "I know what we're gonna do today!"
The worst episode was when everyone played alternative lives as to what had happened if Ross didn’t divorce his first wife, and Rachel married Barry but later meets Joey and acts like a groupie and all this other twists that were awkward and awful.
What are you talking about that was hilarious lol
I wasn’t a big fan of that too
Nah that one is underrated
Yeah that was up there with my least favorite. It was awful.
It was okay not my fave. But was cool to imagine how they're worse versions of themselves without each others friendship
Worst episode in friends would be ross kissing Joey's girlfriend which led to joey kissing rachel.
Yes that can happen in real life but as a viewer of a sitcom its crap to watch stuff from episodes we have seen a mutiple times before.
I've always felt that 2 things never worked on most sitcoms. Even great ones
Flashbacks scenes and vacation episodes. Both feel so lazy and out of context.
The first being one of the reasons I never liked Saved By the bell for example ( Which was very average anyway)
I've always felt that Frasier was the greatest sitcom of all time and they had a fantastic scene
For any fans of it there is actually a scene where Frasier is wanting to go all out for daphne's wedding and has a big rehearsal at his place. Martin then rémanence about his own wedding and you can feel the flashback coming.
" I remember it like it was yesterday" and then the Harp music starts and last quite a long time. Everyone looks confused until they realize it was an actual Harp player from the wedding rehearsal working on his piece 😂😂
Brillant dig at the sitcom cliche
Both of those types of episodes never worked on Friends!
I agree with you on the vacation themed episodes, and I always thought “Las Vegas” should have been a category in Jump the Shark.
Clerks: The Animated Series had the best clip show EVER. It was the second episode, and it was a clip show of the first.
That sounds hilarious
As much as I loved Clerks, I never saw the cartoon. Now I really want to because that sounds genius
Dude, did you really need to go back to 1936 to explain why an episode of Friends wasn't as good?
While ignoring the fact that clip shows had reasons to exist in the 90s... ironic.
The one with the shark p-rn I think is the worst episode for me
This is why I love the Fly episode in Breaking Bad. They were low on cash but created something super unique with their limited means. The episode has the lowest average rating but at the same time it is the favorite episode of many people!
Breaking Bad couldn't have had a clip show because clip shows are usually highlights, of which Breaking Bad has none.
That's a box episode and FRIENDS has one too. That's The One Where No One's Ready and it's one of the best episodes
Fly is the worst episode in the entire series lmao
Fly is so good
Personally, I think the episode where Ross falls for his cousin, & the episode where Chandler hires a maid are the worst.
I remember watching this episode and thinking wtf is the director doing.
Uhhhh idk about this new narrator, his videos are pretty weak. It just seems like you’re repeating the same thing over and over. You didn’t even break down the episode. You’re talking a lot but have almost nothing to say.
while not my favorite episode of "Avatar The Last Airbender" by far, "The Ember Island Players"is a fantastic clip episode and well thought through, so I resent it being included in the lump of bad clip shows
same. but I think maybe he just used it as an example for a clip show rather than insinuating that it was a bad clip show?
I think Ember Island Players works because it's not a straight up clip show like the other examples. Yes, they recap all the major events of the entire series, but it's not done with existing recycled footage, they use the device of the play instead. And it's executed in an extremely tongue-in-cheek way with plenty of jokes poking fun at the characters and the show itself. Plus being a light-hearted funny episode recapping the story is a nice breather leading into the intense 4-part finale of the whole show.
I love how you speak, space the words, choice of words, clarity in voice. Subscribed 😊
The episode I hate the most is when Ross was going to give a speech and noone cares about being there in time. Seriously. They were such bad friends to Ross. If I had been him I would have ditched them and looked for new friends.
Any episode that involves the Joey/Rachel plot line is the worst episode for me. 😂
Yup. Bt the acting, writing, chemistry the scene had was awesome....
Sandwiches!
I didn’t care for the coffee house bullies episode either.
For me, the worst episode Is the one when Phoebe thinks the cat Is her mother and makes everyone agree with her, even Ross has to Apologize to her for disagreeing with that.
This felt like a clip show episode
every episode of friends was the worst episode of friends
The answer to "Why this was the WORST episode of _FRIENDS_ " is six words long: _Because it was a clip show._ Then you padded the video out with, you know, clips from old shows, making it (unironically) a clip show.
My least favorite hands down is Joey trying to learn French. I just found these scenes to be brutal and wayyyy too stupid for me.
Why do people that don't like friends always have such a strong urge to tell people about how bad they think the show is? Honey, don't watch it. We get it, you're so smart. Now let others enjoy things
For real
And why watch a video based on it? When someone makes a video on a show that I don’t like surprise surprise I don’t watch it because it’s a waste of my time
Maybe it's a counter reaction to that group of fans that have the strong urge to tell everyone how amazing it is, and will insist on trying to convert anyone who doesn't agree.
@@weescamp not seeing any of that here. Only 12 year olds showing their intellectual might because all they watch is Rick and Morty. If you don't like Friends, then why come to a video about it just to say you don't like it. Obviously the majority of people here are fans.
Community's clip show episodes is acually really funny and honestly one of my favorite episodes of community.
they're not really clip shows. they're very expensive to make. that gravity scene of jeff and annie costs a lot
The best clip shows were made by Community, they did several clip shows without repeating scenes
by definition, those weren't really clip shows. paradigms of human memory and curriculum unavailable involve expensive productions that parody cheap clip show episodes of FRIENDS and other older sitcoms
'Yes I can. It's all terrain dummy'
That’s why Friends is my favorite show. The worst episodes of the series aren’t even real episodes: they’re recaps.
The only one I think that works even just a little bit is the one when Monica and Chandler tell the rest of the gang they’re moving and they flashback to all the memories of the apartment and since it was the final season, that’s the only time a concept like this can truly work
The only thing I like about clip shows is because of the nostalgia with showing old clips of older episodes. But I usually consider them as fillers.
I mean for a while friends had a clip show EVERY season, and usually had the same clips every time. It was like they just went “hey remember when this show was great?” That’s one of the things that honestly pushes friends really far down for me. The office had one clip show (the banker), community had no true clip shows, and the closest parks and rec came was a montage with a monologue dubbed over (for Leslie and ben’s wedding)
i really love this show so much, and i rewatch it every year a couple times. but i hate when in the lasts seasons Joey became stupider 🤦🏽♀️ it’s so cringy
what is the animated clip at 7:32 from?
Infinity Train
Guys, is there any chance that someone would know the name of the background music since 5:45 to 6:45 ?
The worst episode for me was the one with chandlers new roommate where the roommate goes crazy because in the end chandler basically leaves the guy homeless and it kinda feels like they were making fun of mentally Ill people. It made me sad.
that guy was borderline psychotic
@@raepakula8432 yeah and he needed mental help and they didn’t do that.
It’s called comedy. You’re reading way too much into that episode.
No more falafel for you!!!☝️😂
Am I the only person on the planet that never ever watched friends?
