I always really loved New Girl for the friendship between Jess and Cece. They were close, respected each other, they had actual storylines that didn't involve their boyfriends/husbands. That is: a real friendship. And it's unfortunate that it's so hard to find, but New Girl really nailed it, imho.

Through the show Jess and Robbie became better friends. After years of friendship, Jess and Robbie dated. Then they found out that they were third cousins. Bearing in mind third cousins are not very related at all, plenty of people have children with their third cousins, it seems gross but it's very common, you'll have lots of third cousins and probably don't know who they are, if you've lived in one place your whole life (yeah it's a bit less likely for Jess to move from a fairly big city to a huuuge city and run into one but not impossible) you'll likely have run into many of them without knowing, and may have dated them. But Jess and Robbie realise this and break up, because they personally find it too gross, which is fine. I don't see the problem with any of this?
The episode where the purse trigger all the fights they never did was so great, they really nailed the level of passive aggressive only a long term relationship can have when there’s conflict.
I’m so glad to see a video about these characters. Of course everyone wants to dissect Community and The Office which are fantastic shows, but New Girl seems to always fly under the radar. It’s my absolute favorite comfort show!
@@readilykatie8312 Personally, I LOVE the buddy comedy sitcom, but I feel like New Girl lost itself when it decided to give Nick and Jess a Ross and Rachel narrative, when none of the other characters had been built up enough to take the place of that narrative (because I think the Ross/Rachel style of infinite wait works only if you have a Chandler/Monica ready to take the helm). I understand why it would be someone's comfort show, I rewatch the first 2 seasons a lot, but as a whole it just doesn't hold a candle to the other stuff out there. If they'd been bolder in the way they constructed the show (the way HIMYM was with introducing an overarching plot that got more and more present as the show continued), New Girl would be remembered along with the greats.
@@Shalalacls HIMYM's overarching plot literally ruined the show. New Girl had Cece/Schmidt and didn't really rely on Nick/Jess even though they made the show greatttt there were enough wonderful dynamics
The crossovers are fun, but they also make NO sense because some of the actors appear in both shows as different characters, like Nasim Pedrad is Aly on New Girl and Jake’s sister on B99. the way the developed winston into the most zany character was pretty great. there were zany footprints there from the beginning and winston develops into his true zany self through confidence he gains from his job and alli. but it starts with his horrible track record with girls. basically he gets beaten down throughout the show and then brought back up into his truest zany self. winston is who we should all be because he is someone who lives without a mask. he is 100% himself constantly and doesnt give a fuck.

Winston went from "couch's replacement" to a wonderful loving and beloved character, that change was a classic Cece-Winston messaround! I love Friends and i love New Girl, both shows give that comforting feeling, like you know these characters, you get to love them and root for them. But i gotta say, New Girl did not receive the recognition it deserved at the time. Slowly i see more and more people finding the show and enjoying it now in 2020/2021
This show means a lot to me. No joke, it's changed my life, my perspective, my viewpoint to myself for the better. I never expected that from a sitcom but here we go.
The thing about new girl (at least for me) is that it's not the best show of all time. But I think that people who enjoy it, it becomes one of the most important pieces of media for them.
I love New Girl, it's my most re-watched series. The characters, character development, chemistry, relationships, stories. It's all so good. There's not a single character (main, re-curring, guest, etc.) that sucked. Well actually, I wasn't fond of Caroline haha. But seriously, I used to really admire the friendship in HIMYM, but then it became too messy due to the love triangle. And I can't really speak about Friends since I never watched it. But NG is my friends, I guess, haha. I hope someday someone will create a sitcom that is as good as NG, with amazing characters as well.
The serialization of New Girl is why I think I fell in love with this show. I didn’t know the word for it until I watched your video so thank you! Despite running for longer seasons, Friends and HIMYM didn’t have their characters at the front. In those shows, the storylines were more important than the characters, and with repeated storylines the shows got repetitive. New Girl always tried to keep it fresh and they let every character grow and develop. Each member of the loft grew up, and the series finale did amazing at ending their character arcs.
SO GLAD that you mentioned that background check episode bc when I watched it for the first time recently I laughed so hard throughout the whole episode and couldn’t stop sensing my sister clips and quotes from it. “They call her The Fish. Bc she’s tough but fair. Just like most fish I’ve interacted with” HAHHAHAHAHAH. That dialogue about the womans dead bird. The fact that Jess thinks she owns a bag of crack. Truly a superb episode
Nick is such an important character to me. Theres never been a character I see myself more in. He makes me feel more okay about you know being me, and I think thats special. My comfort character forever.
New Girl is one of those rare rewatchable sitcoms where you hear new dialogue everytime you watch cuz every character acts like an actual person who thinks and speaks even when it’s not their ‘line’. Having no laugh track plays into this too as we care about the e characters as actual people and not ‘comical’ humans.
Its is indeed my number one comfort show, I've been sick all day and it's what I turned and what I often turn to watch to keep my mind occupied when I need something that feel like home
I love this show so much, it's great to see you talk about it here through the lens of a single episode. I wouldn't say this is my favorite episode but certainly one of the most thought out. I didn't realize just how important the consistent characterization of each of the characters is until you explained it like that.
I actually just rewatched the first season, and I loved it way more than I remember. If they competently cut the Schmidt/Cece storyline into a 1h 40m rom-com, it would probably be very high on my list of all-time favorites in that genre.
Thanks for making a video about New Girl !! I love this sitcom, "comfort show" truly is the spot on word to describe it and it's that feeling I always get from watching it. When I watched it I thought that this show was really underrated, having not heard of it from anyone and i wish it had more spotlight 'cause it's so good
I'm surprised you don't love the show more to be honest. Well defined characters, funny scenarios, great one liners. Maybe not as many outstanding episodes as other shows in the genre but certainly a great show nonetheless.
This is totally the perfect episode! This was the episode I used to introduce my friend to the show. Great plot, jokes and perfect demonstration of the character dynamics.
My favorite thing about New Girl is the characters who are in diff subplots interact throughout the episode. Like if Schmidt and Cece are paired in one subplot and Winston in another with Jess and Nick elsewhere - Cece and Jess will still have character moments together even though their plotlines aren't converging. And it's so grounding bc it feels more realistic -- the characters always exist in the episode outside their plot, just like in real life
Man, this show got us through some hard times. When my dad was in the hospital, my family and I would watch and for the half hour it was on we would laugh and enjoy - you forget what’s at stake. This show will always mean the world to me.
I agree with everything you said here I will add that our knowledge of the characters gives us one key element to many comedic situations: Knowledge of what's about to happen. When a show has established its characters well enough, that moment of anticipation - knowing how these characters are going to react to something, makes the payoff land so much more when the writers give us what we expect and confirm a character's reaction because we've already internalized it. Comedy comes from that connection, rather than having them do something completely unexpected. That's part of where the comfort comes from. Predictability in this case works for comedy rather than against it - the situation can be random, but not how the characters we know react to it. (although bigger payoffs can happen when they do something unexpected while keeping with what we know of them - it may stretch our understanding of the character, but makes sense after the fact)
Winston's awkwardness, and all around lovable weird really makes him endearing. The fact that he can't separate a good from bad prank has me rolling all the time. Prank Sinatra forever 🙌
The first 3 or so seasons of New Girl were absolutely fantastic. Not many shows, especially comedies, can stay good longer than that. Stuff always escalates and characters become caricatures, etc. I hate when shows or movie franchises just ruin themselves like that. But those first few seasons are comedy gold.
Everything was soo perfectly said. I loved the way you described the show as a comfort show, because it’s literally my favorite show and I could watch it everyday and it would bring me comfort. I also liked how the show was consistent which is what brung me comfort.
The characters are so strong sometimes you could read the description to an episode and it’s like okay that sounds like nothing happen yet it’s just fun to watch
I've always kind of viewed New Girl as the anti-It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. New Girl's characters are all friends who genuinely love each other and would do anything for each other. Where as It's Always Sunny's characters are all friends who hate each other but are only together because nobody else would ever want to be their friends and they would do anything to sabotage each other's lives for their own gains. They're both a couple of my favorite shows ever made but for very different reasons with different sides of the same coin. I'm not sure what made me think of this suddenly but something did lol
The funniest part of it for me is that had Jess not been such an innocent worrier, she probably could have neglected to mention it and kept it in her ottoman with no repercussions- full searches in each room are not being conducted so they never would have been found, and they were all too daft to think of the easiest option 😄
FRIENDS has perfect character dynamics??? Someone like Ross would never fall in love with Rachel, and vice versa. They're so fundamentally different. Secondly, Rachel and Joey????
I can't stand time bomb episodes (grateful for the terminology!) because I hate that feeling of discomfort, but after getting through it the third time, I do have a greater appreciation for the humor, lol, moreso now after this video!
new girl was impressive as hell when it came to recognizing when a character wasn't working, and then successfully altering them. Did it with Schmidt, Winston, and Cece... and it was amazing. 👏👏
I like to see Winston’s progression into zaniness as an introvert growing comfortable with his friends. Over time he goes from a guarded aloofness to being his true, goofy self, all because he feels safe with the people around him. And of course the original character didn’t work in the ensemble so they had to change him, but at least it kind of makes sense.
I've said it before in a different New Girl video but I can't think of another piece of media that makes me laugh as hard as this one. I enjoy plenty (enough) of comedies but nothing hits like this one as often to this level. I don't know how many times I've watched it at this point and it still consistently brings me to tears. That damn cast tho 🙌
What show has a perfect episode you want us to discuss next?

Winston went from "couch's replacement" to a wonderful loving and beloved character, that change was a classic Cece-Winston messaround!
I love Friends and i love New Girl, both shows give that comforting feeling, like you know these characters, you get to love them and root for them. But i gotta say, New Girl did not receive the recognition it deserved at the time. Slowly i see more and more people finding the show and enjoying it now in 2020/2021
This show means a lot to me. No joke, it's changed my life, my perspective, my viewpoint to myself for the better. I never expected that from a sitcom but here we go.
“new girl” is my favorite, FAVORITE, comedy ever. It’s gold tier.
Holy shit. Calling it a "comfort show" hits it home.
The thing about new girl (at least for me) is that it's not the best show of all time. But I think that people who enjoy it, it becomes one of the most important pieces of media for them.
man this channel talking about sitcoms always makes me tear up and I don't know why
I KNEW it was gonna be background check, Season 4 was just the quintessential NG season, nothing but bangers
The fact that Coach was overlooked in this episode.
By far the best quote in this entire show? "...Drriiiivveee..." - Tran
This is by far the best episode, but I wasn’t able to put into words why. You nailed it.
Don't forget Rhonda (guhhhh, my nerves)
I didnt care for Reagan.
new girl is in fact one of my favourite shows ever. it brings me so much comfort and joy. got me through really tough times too
Character checks really are common for government jobs, actually.
This show is so fantastic, the writing and improvised acting are so realistic, it puts friends to shame
New Girl is the best show of its kind. And the last season was a masterpiece
Yes, especially the last episode. I can't think of another show, that gets the ending as right as New Girl.
SO GLAD that you mentioned that background check episode bc when I watched it for the first time recently I laughed so hard throughout the whole episode and couldn’t stop sensing my sister clips and quotes from
it.
Hope someone took care to saran wrap your door 😉
@@Jessica_Jones I need a jewish maternal figure to do that for me lol
I couldn’t be happier that you are making New Girl content. Please please please keep making more!
The personality check to become officer of law is a real thing.
I love this show so much, it's great to see you talk about it here through the lens of a single episode. I wouldn't say this is my favorite episode but certainly one of the most thought out. I didn't realize just how important the consistent characterization of each of the characters is until you explained it like that.
"It matters no what you've done with your characters but what you do with what you've done with their consistency."
A "Perfect episode of Modern Family" would be great, the show is amazing and has a ton of amazing episodes.
New girl is easily one of my favourite sitcoms of all time
I actually just rewatched the first season, and I loved it way more than I remember. If they competently cut the Schmidt/Cece storyline into a 1h 40m rom-com, it would probably be very high on my list of all-time favorites in that genre.
She believes it's meth, not crack
Anyway, she cracked pressure .
Thanks for making a video about New Girl !! I love this sitcom, "comfort show" truly is the spot on word to describe it and it's that feeling I always get from watching it. When I watched it I thought that this show was really underrated, having not heard of it from anyone and i wish it had more spotlight 'cause it's so good
It's really a comfort show, one of my base when i feel down!!!!
I'm surprised you don't love the show more to be honest. Well defined characters, funny scenarios, great one liners. Maybe not as many outstanding episodes as other shows in the genre but certainly a great show nonetheless.
Nick Miller is my spirit animal!
His is probably either a wind mouse or shell beaver though
This is totally the perfect episode! This was the episode I used to introduce my friend to the show. Great plot, jokes and perfect demonstration of the character dynamics.
Such a good sitcom, very underrated outside the internet
My favorite thing about New Girl is the characters who are in diff subplots interact throughout the episode. Like if Schmidt and Cece are paired in one subplot and Winston in another with Jess and Nick elsewhere - Cece and Jess will still have character moments together even though their plotlines aren't converging. And it's so grounding bc it feels more realistic -- the characters always exist in the episode outside their plot, just like in real life
Hey man. I love this show and you. However not to nitpick. Jess’s bag is full of “meth” not “crack.”
This show is so funny too. Like there’s a small amount of shows that genuinely make me laugh and this one and Brooklyn 99 are at the top for me
it’s my all time favorite show and it holds a very special place, close to my heart
Man, this show got us through some hard times. When my dad was in the hospital, my family and I would watch and for the half hour it was on we would laugh and enjoy - you forget what’s at stake. This show will always mean the world to me.
New Girl is an underrated treasure
This was the first (and maybe only) genuine smile/laugh I’ve had today, thank you.
New Girl is one of my favorite shows of all time. Nick, Schmidt, some of the best TV characters ever written.
As soon as Winston becomes the zany guy is when I really love the show because Winston makes everything even better with his personality and mustache.
Couldn’t agree more!! This episode perfectly captures how great the dynamics are between the characters. Very well thought out
Winston's awkwardness, and all around lovable weird really makes him endearing. The fact that he can't separate a good from bad prank has me rolling all the time. Prank Sinatra forever 🙌
You nailed it, it is absolutely my comfort show. Actually it's even funnier now than it was before. Love each character too.
The home visit from a department that is considering you is absolutely a thing that happens in some places.
Omg me too! I thought I was the only one who literally can watch it daily …
Off topic but I would love to see you do a Mad Men perfect episode breakdown
New girl has the best proposal ever (schmidt and cece). Super realistic
By far my favorite and most rewatched episode, thanks for making a video about it!
I'm not sure what made me think of this suddenly but something did lol
be careful where you leave your aquarium rocks.
You should make one of this for Modern Family
I hate the fact that it ended so abrupt. The background is one of my favorite episodes of the show, I laughed so hard
this is literally my favorite episode i feel so validated
New Girl is the show that I could watch over and over again and never get sick of it. Easily one of the best shows I have ever seen
I KNEW it was going to be this episode. My all-time favorite. Everything about it is pure gold.
Was hoping this was gonna be the episode when I saw the title. I tell people this is my favorite episode of ANY show ever
Omg didn’t expect you to pick my FAVOURITE episode!!!
I came here wondering if you picked my favorite episode. You did. Excellent taste and video!
When i saw the title of this video, i instantly thought of background check
When you mentioned which episode it was I started laughing in anticipation 😂
*Slowly and awkwardly moonwalks away because this was the one episode I did not like.
omg same 😭 it feels like a chore to watch
I can't stand time bomb episodes (grateful for the terminology!) because I hate that feeling of discomfort, but after getting through it the third time, I do have a greater appreciation for the humor, lol, moreso now after this video!
IF ONLY WE HAD IT ON NETFLIX IN MY COUNTY I WOULD REWATCH IT 50 TIMES A YEAR. I MISS THEM A LOT
new girl was impressive as hell when it came to recognizing when a character wasn't working, and then successfully altering them. Did it with Schmidt, Winston, and Cece... and it was amazing. 👏👏
I knew it was gonna be this episode before I clicked on the video… I have rewatched it like 20 times it’s insane
I love that this was Elizabeth’s first show. And it was amazing.
i love video essays on new girl and this one is so well done! ❤️
