You get the tones perfect for this one. Most people demoing these Specials just ruin the sweet tones they produce. No dirt or distortion needed at all. Nice!
Hi Greg Just want to thank you for so tastful guitarplaying in several videos. Now when so many guitarplayers plays like they where on speed. Your playing is a relief. All the greats ones have something in common. Jimi. Clapton. Beck. BB. King. All have an had feeling as a priority in the playing.
I just bought a 1957 Gibson Les Paul special original not a reissue. I am totally blown away With The versatile sound of the aged wood and the Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The control of the tone knobs and the volume knobs and the different pick-up selection is so beautiful sounding. I have a lot of guitars and I think my 57 Les Paul special is the best sounding guitar I have ever played or heard. I am 70 years old and I've been playing since I was 17. Rock and roll blues oldies but goodies country and western and the originals. When I play the 57 Les Paul specialit makes me more creative than any other guitar I picked up you sound great on that guitar it sounds like my 57.I love that you play the guitar and go through the different tones you can get I've watched many of your demos of other guitars and you're playing speaks for itself and the guitar you choose to play. You give the best demos of anybody I've seen on RUclips. And you don't even have to say a word the guitars you play say it all. This of course is my favorite camo because of the tones you get out of that guitar
Okay, Greg... The fact that you sound great comes as no surprise to anyone... But, that FINISH!!! MAN! That Special has aged beautifully!!! That thing is gorgeous!
I bought my 55' Les Paul over in Phoenix, The fretboard was seperated, I thought it was ruined, My luthier charged me $40.00 for some glue and let it sit overnight with a clamp, You couldn't even tell, Easy fix* :)
I would sell my grandma to the devil just for the original neck pickup of this one. My 2023 LP Special doesn't sound nearly as articulate and sparkling in the neck position. Excellent playing, Greg!
I keep hearing folks call these guitars noisy... Sounds clear as a bell to me, man. I didn't check to see if you have any notes, but I assume you're playing that thing clean for the first bit, yes? Gorgeous, brother. And then when you fatten it up?!? Stunning. Obviously, they are nowhere near as consistent as Fender in their manufacturing output (broadly speaking), but, man... when Gibson gets it right, GODDAMN! ...they get it RIGHT!
Love all the reviews and the playing! What is your take on the Gibson vs Tokai situation? Im torn between buying a Gibson LP Studio and a LP Tokai. Greetings from South Africa.
star cloud I just got the new 19 special and it’s worth every dollar. I would definitely get the special over a studio. Gibson nailed it with this one.
In my opinion, the Special is by far the best value guitar Gibson has. So I agree, it's worth every penny. With a Special you won't have a need to upgrade later, it's already the best. With the studio you will always look at the standards or classics.
ITs funny, these guitars used to be DOGSHIT in people's eyes... Even into the LP renaissance (or birth i guess you could call it) when guys discovered the standard's sonic possibilities, right up to the beginning of collectors inflating the prices of those very same standards. These were the "ok i will throw in this special if you agree to the price (on the standard)". It just goes to show you we haven't moved too far away from the Dutch Tulip craze.
For sure, most of it is in the head and with proliferation of guitar porn channels like Andertons most of us have entire lists in our head of guitars we want but very few actually use their gear professionally, just a collectors hobby and noodling a bit at home. Our heroes from decades past looked at them as tools to do a job, played what they had, bought what their needed.
My favorite Les Paul model.

ohhhhh yea!
Nice! Is the Les Paul Studio as good as the Special? I don't know which one to get?
