This is one of those weird guitars that sounds stupendous! Excellent tone! Gibson quite literally glued a mahogany neck to a solid piece of mahogany, shaped into a Les Paul body. And yet, despite being lighter than a standard, and lacking a maple cap and binding on the body, it arguably has the best tonal palate of any guitar Gibson makes, including anything that comes out of the Custom Shop. The only Gibson it can’t beat in terms of tone is the Firebird, despite being uglier than the former. The only thing I dislike about your guitar is that its not right handed, but thats an easy fix.

I've owned this same guitar for the past 6 months and it definitely has been my go to guitar. It does everything I want to hear and feel, just awesome. I own/owned some great guitars but this is the one I'd grab if the house was burning down.
I have small fluorescent light in my home’s light fixtures and they cause buzzing in all of my guitars (PAF and P90). On thing I do with my P90 equipped guitars is removed the magnets from the neck pickup, and wire the neck pickup out of phase with the bridge pickup. I run the switch in the middle position and that helps with 50/60 cycle hum while sounding like the bridge pickup only.
I have two LP Specials from 1999 (P-90) and 2000 (humbucker). These are the model with no neck binding, tunamatic bridge, belly cut, and slim-taper neck. I love them both, but want a LP Special double cut from the same era, for better access to the upper frets. The Gibson LP Specials with wraparound bridge and neck binding seem to cost over twice as much - even three times as much for custom shop versions. If you like big necks, then these models aren't for you, but for me, someone with medium sized hands, I love it. The 2000 was only ~$500 whon I bought it used 15 years ago, while the 1999 was a bit more, but still under $1,000-. Why the vintage type costs so much more, I don't understand, but they likely used better (lighter) mahogany for yours. Mine are about 8 pounds, a bit more than my stratocasters, but no neck dive. I was thinking of getting a SG, but a double cut LP Special is more my type.
Sweet guitar dude! Given my recollection of your description in the disparity of the USD to the AUD it must have come at a dear price. Many happy playing hours. Cheers!
After years and years of my journey to find the perfect guitar, I found it/her, my Les Paul Special, two years ago by switching it via ebay with my Highway1 Strat (after lots of guitars, even a Gibson Les Paul Studio, a Firebird, a Hagstrom P90 ....), and I can not comment your beautiful video in any other way than to say: You absolutely nailed it! Thank you! ❤🎉

That color is simply beautiful. Plus it has neck binding! It doesn’t look “cheap” with the satin finishes found in the studios. It has a proper nitro finish and mother of pearl headstock Inlay. Looks sick on you Shane and you definitely rock it.
Markonefifteen that color kind of makes the guitar look like a toy, I mean it’s literally called tv yellow, as if it was trying to not sound playful. This thing looks fun, damn I have to buy it now
I have really been wanting to add a 335 to my Les Pauls but I think the LP Special might have to come first. What a great video. Love your reviews and your playing brother!
I've got an Epiphone Les Paul Ltd Ed Special with P90 pickups. It has only one volume knob and one tone knob and the selector switch is between them. It is a Worn Yellow Nickle and one can see the grain in the wood. It's a Great guitar and that sound from the P90s sets it apart from all the rest. . . . yep . . .
I love the P-90s. Never had a guitar with them because of the lefty thing. Might have to look into this. I like it better than my L.P. Standards from over the years.
Ok I was wondering that, excuse my lack of guitar intellect, but p90,s r p 90,s? I think if epiphones r good enough for Gary Clark, because for me I'm only buying it for the p90s mainly
Tried one in the local guit shop in the last week. Bit of chunk to the Epi neck. Fit and finish is really good. The overal build was very good. Decent travel on the pots, not just on and off. Needed a decent full setup out of the box. Gibson was there as well. Better guit, but didn't annihilate the Epi by any means. Epi had a bit more jangle, Gibson had a bit more mid grunt.
I have my pre order in for the Epi they should be ready to ship out by late March. Keeping my fingers crossed I get a good one from what I have seen some of the epiphones need fret leveling since I can do the work myself I didn't let that scare me off.

My Gibson Les Paul JR DC Tribute USA is maybe the best Gibson I have ever played and surprisingly versatile....has the feel of a truly excellent hand-made guitar .....best neck feel for me and awesome tonal range for one pickup. 2020 I think ... and very affordable. Total Winner.
I bought a 1977 double cutaway Les Paul Special way back in 1990 at the long defunct Rich Sound and Music on sight. Pulled it off the wall, looked at the “$325 price tag and said “I’ll take it!” Beginning of a long obsession with P-90 pickups, and that old Double Cut is still one of my favorites.
I've been following your channel for years, and saw this when it it came out, I'm a lefty and your taste in guitars echo's my own, I have a V like yours, and the Tele 50's, like yours, and this one has been on my bucket list , pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago at Sweetwater on my own lefty Special TV yellow. and yes it's a keeper... mine was made in November of 2023 and it's wonderful!!! Anyway, I feel like I know you, great stuff man.
Great tones Shane especially in that middle position- sounded like the tone from "Hold on loosely" from 38 special. What a great guitar it sounds like it wants to be played live! And loud!
That is a super looking guitar, Great sound out of those P-90s. About 1 1/2 years ago my son bought a 2015 Gibson LP Special Double-cut P90s that was being sold on the big on-line stores heavily discounted to $500 free shipping in a really nice case. I think he got it from Sweetwater. But it had the terrible robo tuners and the metal nut. The bridge/tailpiece wasn't easy to intonate. But he swapped in some good machine heads and a Hipshot adjustable bridge and it turned out to be his favorite gigging guitar. Keep those great videos coming.
I am loving your playing on this video! So good! I Just got a 2019 Gibson LP Spec Trib DC. Love it! So many times from just two P90s! I haven't been able to put it down! Wish it had binding on the neck but oh well, it still kicks so much ass!

Love your Channel and Content, also your STYLE
I have the Epiphone LP Special I P90, on sale it was $ 129. Like the Gibson LP Special P90, ready to go off the rack/out of the box. I wanted a Strat, but for a 1st guitar, the LP is a home run for an instrument. I eventually found my 1st Strat as well. The P90's are as close to humbucklers with single coil pickups as you'll get. The Epiphone P90's have a 8K neck & 9K bridge resistance specs. Less head stock break angle than the Gibson, similar to the specs for the PRS brand for break angles.
I do agree, this is the one of , if not the best tone I've heard in one of your videos, it's a matter of being between weaker resistance single coil pickups and quite often way overpowering humbucklers. Whether it was in the moment or not. Part of that might be dialed in amp settings to compensate for some other aspect or the pickup ? The P90's are versatile, Metal is probably where the P90's might be challenged to match & keep of with the humbucklers.
Great playing, great tones, excellent demo as usual Shane. BTW, the TV yellow against a light blue shirt looks amazing. Anyway, I bought one and love it too! It's truly a 'special' guitar.
I'm with you..... you just have to make that face scrunch on the first power chord. Sounds GREAT!! I'm 67 and haven't played out in decades (and was primarily a bass player), and I'm going to have to get one. Even the neck pickup sounds great, clean with volume down a bit... it sounds not terribly unlike my '54 ES125 and the 70 year old P90 through a completely different amp setup. Another great video. Thanks!
Great tone Shane. I'm a big fan of P90s. They really are incredibly versatile and cover pretty well all the bases. I bought an Epiphone Les Paul '56 Gold Top about five years ago and love it to bits. I play mostly Blues but it's great for Jazz and Rock too. Keep up the good work 😉
Mate, the smile in your face says it all. Besides the TONE coming out of that thing. I sincerely don't like the looks, but it sounds so good. On my wat to try one today. UPDATE: After watching this video, I went to my music store to try one. I tried them against a standard SG with the same p90s, I tried it against an Epiphone (which was really nice too but in all honestly, 300 bucks more gets you the gibson) and finally I picked up a fancy gold top. Honestly, this guy sounded better that all of the previously mentioned, but I still hate the looks. Dont know what to do!
Great vid! Someone's been listening to some Bad Co. Love it! Show me someone who does not love P90 pickups and I'll show you someone who's never played a guitar with P90 pickups.
I love my Epiphone LP Special P90. Got it used for a $100. Yeah it's one of the older, cheaper ones, but I lucked out and got a gem. Want to try out one of the new Epiphones and see how the neck feels.
God, those clean tones -- you just cannot beat a Les Paul Special with P90s for that classic, clean sound. THAT is the sound I want when I play clean. I need to start saving up, because one of these things new is $1,800. I just wish I could get the left-handed one in the Vintage Cherry finish instead of TV Yellow. Don't get me wrong -- they both look good. I just would prefer Vintage Cherry if I could get it. Oh well. Lefties can't be choosy. 🙂
Ironic you just did this video now as I just bought a 2010 Epiphone version of this exact guitar only with Seymour Duncan Vintage P90's and Tonepro Bridge and I'm really liking it. Same all mahogany body/neck with set neck and grovers. They are great guitars!

I've owned this same guitar for the past 6 months and it definitely has been my go to guitar. It does everything I want to hear and feel, just awesome. I own/owned some great guitars but this is the one I'd grab if the house was burning down.
Couldn't agree more!
If you want more intonation adjustment there are replacement wrap-around bridges with adjustable saddles built in.
those Neons are likely adding a lotta buzz.. Try turning them off and see if the P90's quiet down.
Thank you! ❤🎉
ive been a les paul player since 1976, that said i played standards. never say these for sale at a music store in the 70s or 80s. i bought one of these couple months ago and im blown away with the sound. love everthing about this guitar
That color is simply beautiful. Plus it has neck binding! It doesn’t look “cheap” with the satin finishes found in the studios. It has a proper nitro finish and mother of pearl headstock Inlay. Looks sick on you Shane and you definitely rock it.
Yeah, a LP style guitar without the neck binding just doesn't seem right.
Markonefifteen that color kind of makes the guitar look like a toy, I mean it’s literally called tv yellow, as if it was trying to not sound playful. This thing looks fun, damn I have to buy it now
I love P90! If you ever want to get rid of the hum get a electro-harmonix debugger it takes out the noise even in extreme situations
It's a Great guitar and that sound from the P90s sets it apart from all the rest. . . . yep . . .
I can't decide if I prefer p90,s or Humbuckers!
I think I love both equally.
I forgot I have the tunomatic bridge, is it a big mod to get rid of that?
I love the P-90s. Never had a guitar with them because of the lefty thing. Might have to look into this. I like it better than my L.P. Standards from over the years.
I'm looking at the Ephinone TV Yellow with P90's myself, can't swing the $1600 for the Gibson,
have you tried the Epiphone TV Yellow? thanks
I’m in the same boat..want Shane to review one when they come out.. hopefully they’ll have a lefty for him!
Love P90s
I have this beauty for 10 days and I absolutely love it. So I'm glad you sold me on this guitar because it's just amazing. Best purchase I've made. This one is a keeper for life!!
Wow, that neck pickup touches my soul. So perfect sounding. Killer playing too. Love your channel.
I TOO, think that was the best tone I've heard on your vids....WOW!
I had the DC faded version years ago, brilliant guitar. I ended up selling it, wish I hadn’t. When these guitars are set up well they are unbeatable
Just ordered the Epiphone version. Cant afford the Gibson. Hope it sounds as good as yours. Awesome mate and great playing as ever.
Gibson pickups Will help u to get THAT tone, the rest of it is just a way to get easy money, if a guitar fells good n sounds good it is good
@@enricofiorin Had it a couple of weeks now and it plays and sounds fantastic. I doubt I’ll feel the need to upgrade the pickups but the option is there as it’s a great guitar.
Epiphone are great guitars. The Japanese plant is putting out better work than Nashvile r/n.
@@dickstryker Had my Epi LP Special a few months now. It’s great. Well made, set up and sounds awesome. I play it more than my Gibson LP Standard which I’ve had over 30 years!
I walked into a Guitar Center near me last week and there it was, a 2019 Gibson LP special with P90's, and a tune-o-matic bridge in honeyburst for $649! It had a finish blemish near the heel on the bottom side which I was able to fix in my shop. Sweet deal on an absolutely killer guitar.
J Yuke that’s a great deal mate...you can get lucky sometimes 🍀
Nice!!!
That guitar is simply a rock machine plain and simple... I've been gassing for this one for a while
I bought a nice, older used SP, and that thing plays like a champ, has a lot of punch to it. I've got no complaints.
I have the LP special tribute and absolutely love it! Sounds the same , great feel and for $1000!
My Gibson Les Paul JR DC Tribute USA is maybe the best Gibson I have ever played and surprisingly versatile....has the feel
of a truly excellent hand-made guitar .....best neck feel for me and awesome tonal range for one pickup. 2020 I think ...
and very affordable. Total Winner.
6:05 to 6:10 - now that's just a great noise. Awesome video man.
I’m left handed too, but I learned how to play right handed in the beginning and I’m so glad I did.
I bought a 1977 double cutaway Les Paul Special way back in 1990 at the long defunct Rich Sound and Music on sight. Pulled it off the wall, looked at the “$325 price tag and said “I’ll take it!”
Beginning of a long obsession with P-90 pickups, and that old Double Cut is still one of my favorites.
I have a 2008 1960 reissue vos tv yellow......killer guitar......they weren't making these for a while.....just started to remake them
I've been following your channel for years, and saw this when it it came out, I'm a lefty and your taste in guitars echo's my own, I have a V like yours, and the Tele 50's, like yours, and this one has been on my bucket list , pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago at Sweetwater on my own lefty Special TV yellow. and yes it's a keeper... mine was made in November of 2023 and it's wonderful!!! On a side note, I love your tasteful playing, but even being a lefty player myself, it's harder to figure out what you are playing, I guess because I'm so used to watching right handed players and transposing in my head the notes to lefty. Anyway, I feel like I know you, great stuff man.
Killer demo! Went out and purchased one! Thank man!
Great tones Shane especially in that middle position- sounded like the tone from "Hold on loosely" from 38 special. What a great guitar it sounds like it wants to be played live! And loud!
That guitar sounds brilliant. Congratulations Shane!
Like that little Owner of a Lonely heart lick, that was huge when I was in high school!!
I just wanted to confirm, it has binding on the finger board?
My Christmas present last year! My wife secretly started buying Guitar Center gift cards at the beginning of 2020 and then made me do a scavenger hunt on Christmas day. The scavenger hunt ended with a guitar shaped lunch box with $2000 in GC gift cards inside! I purchased the TV yellow Gibson SP (2019) and a Fender Champion 100! best Christmas ever!
This guitar absolutely rocks. The first minute of the video completely entranced me with its excellent tone. Glad it's so light, too.
I am the Adopted Owner of over 160 Guitars and I never regret buying any of them, plus I have about 45 amps, most of them are Tube/Valve amps. I was a poor Guitar player growing up, now I can afford to buy when I want. All of my Guitars and Amps sound different and feel different. Lots of TONEAGE. Love your Channel and Content, also your STYLE
The only question I have is, TV Yellow or Heritage Cherry? I love them both, can’t decide.🤔
i just bought the same guitar same color too 2 weeks ago.... and LOVE it. the intonation is spot on
I have the Epiphone LP Special I P90, on sale it was $ 129.
Cool guitar
Does neck position sound different vs SG? SG is closer to middle, Doors sound.
Thanks!
Best guitar i own, probably best ive ever played
Im about to get a black one
I’ve got the same one but the bridge pickup is a bit weak and think compared to the neck. Strange.
Thats some righteous playing and the tones are fabulous. Great review, showing the versatility of this guitar
Great vid! Someone's been listening to some Bad Co. Love it!
Show me someone who does not love P90 pickups and I'll show you someone who's never played a guitar with P90 pickups.
I've got an epiphone custom shop reissue 59 junior in TV yellow. I love these things man you're playing great today Shane thanks for the show
I just love that colour and imagine a Les Paul Standard in tv yellow....
Congrats. Those P90 on a Les Paul Special is the best of a good Strat neck pickup and a Tele bridge on high gear.
I bought one of these Les Paul specials with the P90s. Demo model $700. Best buy I ever made. My tele, PRS, Strat, and SG are jealous.
Just got mine today ( well yesterday),anyway what a badass guitar. Setup right out of the box.None of the QC issues you hear so much about.
I would regret too , P90s man
Gibson P90 pups are amazing. So are Kinmann's, they just don't have the noise.
I've used bore oil on the fretboard and it darkens up that awkward dry looking board nicely.
Thirty years ago bought my first Les Paul and still have it. Today ordered this one for a chance to have a go at those P-90`s.
Ironic you just did this video now as I just bought a 2010 Epiphone version of this exact guitar only with Seymour Duncan Vintage P90's and Tonepro Bridge and I'm really liking it. Same all mahogany body/neck with set neck and grovers. They are great guitars!
I don't see the irony
Have a 01 LP Jr that's the 'secret weapon'! Any issues with dialing in tone, grab Jr=problem solved!! A keeper!!
