  • Christian's hotel inspired by LEGO flat: • Creator of praised LEG...
When Christian Schallert isn't cooking, dressing, sleeping or eating, his 24 square meter (258 square feet) apartment looks like an empty cube. To use a piece of furniture, he has to build it.
Located in Barcelona's hip Born district, the tiny apartment is a remodeled pigeon loft. Designed by architect Barbara Appolloni, Christian says the space was inspired by the space-saving furniture aboard boats, as well as the clean lines of a small Japanese home.
Christian sold his apartment and has reinvested his money and small space design ideas in opening a small hotel in Barcelona: www.hotelbrummell.com

Agree! I like that when you are cooking, you can protect the rest of the place from the smell and fumes just by closing them away. And hiding everything makes it so neat and yet I saw he still has empty shelves which means it's more than enough for one person leaving. And a real fridge with dishwasher and what a balcony. It's really delightful.

That multifunctional wall is genius! I think I'd want a fold-down counter for food prep adjacent to the "kitchen", although the fold-down table isn't terribly far away. Outdoor living is practical in Barcelona, but in colder or more rainy climates he'd need more indoor living space for this design.

Vinnytsia It is liberating to be relieved of the responsibilities of maintaining a large home, and from storing loads of stuff you rarely ever use. I wonder how many people would be happier in smaller spaces but they worry about class or status or dignity. Luxurious materials can be used quite lavishly in a small space. Too much space and too much stuff lead to too much responsibility. Excess stuff just bogs you down. What you own owns you.
