You pointing out Max's way of coping with severe depression by switching to a hyperactive side and putting himself in dangerous situations is starting to remind me of manic depression. That would actually make total sense.
I think it also speaks to how both of them handle loss. Sam (in game and cartoon) is willing to move on if he ever separates from Max, but Max can't come to terms with that and either falls into a depression (the cartoon) or bargains and looks for another way to get Sam back (the game). Max truly can't picture a life without Sam because Sam is everything to him.
I think you might’ve confused Sam and Max on certain parts. Cause Sam will literally fall into a depressed state when separated from Max. Telltale Seasons 1-3, and the comcs show this. We don’t really see Max feeling down when he’s separated from Sam. We see him like this more in the cartoon and one quick scene in s2 where the Devil separates him and Sam by putting Sam in a world without Max. The game doesn’t really show this all the time. The comics never show him sad or depressed without Sam.

I agree that Super-Ego is part of Max's own thoughts, but Max just chooses to ignore his Super-Ego in favor of having senseless fun and being with Sam. Even Super-Ego himself says "*Inside* Max's brain? My dear Sam... I *am* Max's brain!"

Honestly, Max is one of my favorite characters in media. And this video, going in depth about him and his inner thoughts and feelings, legitimately made me a bit sad. Love the dynamic he has with Sam. And their relationship overall.

I definelty agree about the game version being a bit ooc sometimes and it feels like he doesn't care about Sam as much as he does in the cartoon. I think the cartoon version comes across as having a bit more to him than just a comic relief character to just poke fun at things all the time.
