Night Camp, No permission Wild Camp, Low profile, Strong Storm, Wiltshire Man

- I headed out to a Woodland about 3 mile cycle ride from home using a home made tarp shelter, the weather was stormy, strong winds and heavy rain at times.
This had to be a low profile camp as I did not have permission to camp here. Infact I do not know who owns this woodland.
This Woodland is on the edge of a public park and pretty much abandoned and left to nature, I have visited it often over the years and removed rubbish by the bin load, I feel like I know this woodland well and it upsets me when I find litter has been left.
Thankfully the woodland it appears has not been visited in recent months as not much fresh litter has been discarded!
The woodland is old and can be seen on maps dating from the 1830's, it's shape and size has changed little in all that time.
I relied on my Hurricane lantern for lighting and was careful to use reflectors to stop any stray light giving my location and camp away.
I used a variety of cocking pots, MSR nesting stainless pots that I like very much and a new Optimus Weekender cookset with the Heat exchanger, I am very impressed at how fast this pot boils water.
The stove used was a Kovia Spider remote canister stove.

Your thoughts really resonate with me. Things like hot water on tap and central heating are very recent innovations. A physical roof over our head is maybe a couple of thousand years old, and less than that if one was a peasant. By spending a night out in the woods in winter , you're connecting with the experience of all our ancestors, going back millennia.
Yes exactly, Find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions
Always wrapped the pots in a section of the "Sun newspaper". Amazing the, Sun, the pages work as good as paper towels.
A fantastic simple wild camp, enjoyed every minute.
Glad you enjoyed it John :)
Great wild camp and thoughtful words, no one should be scared of the dark, once you’ve shut your eyes for a few minutes, open them and tune into your senses.
Cheers sandy, everytime i spend a night under the stars i always feel so much better, at one with nature totaly relaxed and just enjoy the now, this very moment because realy it's all we have.
With the love and respect you have for the land i don’t think any landowner would mind you camping on their land WM. Great video again, thank you 👍👌
Thanks for this one Sandy. Lovely and peaceful out there!
Thanks enjoyed that. Good tip about the bird of prey too.
Once a year a friend cycles from Wirral to Devon. He Wild Camps the whole way. A few years back on his return journey he was in bother. He had overnighted north of Shrewsbury and in the morning started the final leg of his journey to The Wirral. He was soaked through, had problems with his bicycle, very little money and was hungry with just a packet of chocolate raisins to eat. He said he prayed that morning to arrive home, but it was looking bleak for the chances of it in the heavy rain. I had no idea where he was but, perhaps by no coincidence, at about 1030am our paths crossed 15 miles from Shrewsbury, 46 miles from The Wirral. Fortunately I recognised him. Not only did he get home that day but his bike went straight onto the top of our car and he came with us for a good meal at Shrewsbury and was a great addition for celebrating my 50th Birthday!
Only writing this as it was a good listen the philosophical part of part video.
It's always good when synchronicities and coincidences happen and they do quite often, however the opposite is also the case and many are much less fortunate.
I'm reading a book by a chap called Nathan Millward who rode a 110cc postie bike from Australia to London and then from New York to San Francisco and on upto Alaska.
When he set off from Australia he had a budget of (I think) £5000 and got back to the UK with the help of many helpful and friendly people from all walks of life.
The American leg of the trip started with just £500, I've yet to complete reading the book of this journey but I know he made it and I'm sure only due to the help of others.
I'm sure some prayers go answered, but I must emphasise the use of the word "some"..........
All the best, Sandy. I look forward to your videos in 2024.
Best wishes for the New year Jeff
Not great weather but you looked very snug in your shelter...a lovely looking chicken curry...many thanks for all the videos this year and very best wishes for 2024.
This would make for an incredible first half of a found footage movie.
I don't need to say how much i enjoyed that or how nicely the video was done, i have told you that many a time. This is the time to honestly say thank you for this channel, there are only one or two channels that i cannot wait to watch once i receive a notification from and you're definitely one of them, god bless you, please keep the good work going and i wish you the most healthy and prosperous new year.
Thanks Nige:)
MackPedition Edition Danish Camo Shelter, very nice 👍🏻
Getting out at this time of year 🇬🇧, in the wet and the wind and the rain 😩, I never fancy going out in it. Everything is damp, wet, cold and miserable.
But when I do I’am always glad that I have and feel happy. It makes ya feel alive 😊👍🏻
It's certainly been very damp for sure
As Carl Sagan said, we are all originally "star stuff". Back far enough, rocks, trees, animals, fish, everything started from the same material. It's a bit tricky to think of that tree or boulder as our "cousin", but we are all part of this planet. It's as good a reason as any to treat it with respect and love. Happy New Year to you and your family.
Sandy, what a deeply pleasant man you are, your thoughts on life are brilliant, I echo most of them, Carl Sagan ,yes I remember the Series( I am 62), cheers .
It looks like you had a well-deserved resting time Sandy. The side bags on the bike may be worth putting a black bin liner on them when stealth camping, the red is a giveaway and can be seen at quite a distance, also the bin liners can be used to diffuse light at night. Great seeing you out there doing what you enjoy.
Yes; I thought that too. Really admire him for doing it in that weather. I'm drawn to the idea but have never quite grasped the nettle! Partly because at this time of year the nights are so long. Also because it's soooo much easier to sit in the warmth and watch other people doing it! Note to myself in '24; must get out more.
The weather wasn't ideal but that is probably the main reason for you being out there in the first place. You looked at it as a fun little challenge and you went on out and conquered it and turned it into a rewarding and relaxing adventure. As you have said before: "There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad equipment." You brought the right equipment and the right attitude (along with some determination) and success was had. Thanks for sharing your time with us again my friend, see you on the next one.
Hi Terry, fortunately the weather has been mild, otherwise I would have froze on this camp, I always check the forecast and provided it doesn't go below 7C I am OK with my 3 season bag, any colder and I need to adjust accordingly. Weather will only get colder now for the next three months, so that means Hot tent going forwards:)
Hope you had a great Christmas mate. Happy new year . 🎉
@@WestcountryYokelOnRUclips Thank you Sir. I hope that you had a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year also!
Sandy I am new to your channel. I must say your thoughtful words, insight and questioning of our existence resonated with me.
Thank you, Sir.
I needed to hear those words.
Please take care of yourself and thank you for being here.
Deep and profound respect.
Thanks Ben,
When it comes to finding answers sometimes there are things we don't know apart from those things we know via our senses. As to gut feelings and intuitions sometimes they can be right and often times wrong.
I do have a problem with religion especially organised religion, nothing is proven its all based on trust and faith (could be true and could not be true) and it seems quite controlling and needs your money!
Best to make the most of your life here and NOW.
Many of our actions, thought patterns, looks and maybe even a sort of collective memory could all be embedded in our DNA a bit like instinct. Maybe thats why we all like to stare into a fire because our ancestors thousands of years in the past did the same thing. Eye colour, skin colour, hair colour, looks, body shape and size, thought process etc are I'm sure mostly hand me downs from the past generations.
Its interesting to consider all these things, but most importantly if this is all there is then how precious it must be.
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Thank you for taking us along. You're a good cook, Sandy. Looking forward to videos in 2024. Cheers!
Thanks Dan, best wishes for the new year
Sandy
@@WiltshireMan Thank you. Sandy! Best wishes for the new year to you too.
I agree totally with you about the handing down from ancestors. We are all star dust, if you think about it.
As an Anglican chaplain Sandy, I never push my concepts on others either, but it’s true, a little solitude, whisky and the roar of the dark forest does link us to the ancient reality of timelessness and the aspiration of the depth within everything. Love that shelter woodland pattern. Take care my old RUclips friend, well not that old only eight years I think, assuming time exists😅. Harry…out
Cheers Harry, I turned 61 in October. I think for sure encoded in our DNA are instructions on how to assemble the human form, skin colour, hair eye's etc and even our personality traits and maybe even a collective memory hence our affinity with nature and how we all love to stare into a camp fire. Also our thoughts, actions and choices/ desires could be dictated by DNA encoding (if so then so much for free will)
Also we can look similar to family members who lived long ago, probably think similar and have the same emotions likes and dislikes, it's an intriguing thing.
I was brought up a Christian but I do wrestle with some of the doctrines of faith and you only have to look back into history to see how religion has led to many travesties like the burning of women accused of being witches, various tortures devised by monks, the oppression of knowledge, even those who discovered the orbits of the planets and the sun centred solar system were given a very hard time, the list could go on and on . Religion is not one of mans best inventions!
Is there's a god above and beyond all this, there maybe, I'd like to hope so but I don't really know.
All I can do is be honest and true to myself and stand or fall accordingly.
I hope we can have a camp in the new year at some point, I'm sure we will enjoy a Great discussion together.
Have a Great New Year Harry
Sandy
@@WiltshireMan 🤣Infinite space and timelessness permits dimensionality. Man made religion void if spiritual insightfulness falls short. 🤣🤝
Nice going Sandy you managed to sneak a video in just before the end of 2023 👍👍👍. What a wet camp this one was but you once more made it look so easy. Carl Sagan lol, haven’t heard that name in years, used to enjoy watching his series. Your shelter looked so warm and inviting in the glow from the lantern. Glad you were able to get some sleep. Love your videos, keep being you 💕. Wishing you, Mandy, your family and of course you girls Carmen and Zeta a very happy, healthy New Year. Judy🇨🇦🇨🇦
Its a nice simple shelter Judy I like it:) Dogs are curled up on the sofa staying warm, temps dropping, could be a Hot tent camp soon:)
Sandy shines his own light! Inspiring sir
Did I mention I have 2 knives made by him! Just bragging lol
Haaa,,,all the best for the new year Glen
i did have two deers start fighting about 15 meters from me at 4am once i thought it was a yeti smashing through the trees ,i nearly sxxt myself .
Another back to nature offering. I salute you. I would prefer being in an enclosed space ie tent to keep the weather out and warmth in.
Loved this film Sandy, just because you have not seen the Boggie man, it does not mean he's not real.. I loved the chat more so as the whisky went down sir !! Seems the shelter did the job in protecting you from the elements Sir.. I hope you and the family have a happy, contented and Healthy new year mate.
Had a good sleep in that shelter Mack:)
Hey WM, my new year resolution is, to be as adventurous as you. I have just bought all my camping 🏕 gear. I have a bike so im good to go. Heading down to St Mabyn to try it out. Bring in the new year down in Cornwall. Tune in! Thanks for your videos. They are a true inspiration. ❤🎉😊 🐕 🚲 All the best for 2024, Lee.
Go for it Lee, we all should make the most of our time here :)

@@WiltshireMan Much appreciated WM 🙏 ❤️ 😊 THANKS.
2024-Coming in hott! Loved the video Sandy!
Sandy you are what I call one with nature ,A true modern day Tarzan ,enjoy.
Just to add, when you spoke of the cosmos it reminded me of the song Woodstock by Joni Mitchell,we are stardust we are golden and we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.
Yes I can remember that song, it's playing in my head now:)
Nice camp with a bit of deep thinking thrown in. You may not have been spotted but I bet that curry could be smelt a mile away🙂. Best wishes for the New Year.
Haaha well maybe, the wind was certainly strong. All the best for the new year Patrick
Well Sandy, the wife sat and watch your video of this cold, wet, damp video and had to switch the heating on.🤣 The food looked good but did your sleeping bag remain dry! I can never understand the reluctance to fit mudguards to a bike, I have road bikes in all wet and muddy conditions but never without mudguards. 😊👍 Well done anyway, we always enjoy your videos, even our collie Isla watches them. 🚴♀🐕🦺
Fortunately I was dry and warm enough on this camp, but temps now dropping so will need a warmer bag for the next one. Glad you are ALL enjoying the videos:)
Hi Sandy,
Your Vlogs have reinvigorated my past love of ‘getting outdoors’ again. And 2024 heralds new ‘adventures’.
I’ve invested in a new tent - a Black Friday bargain 😅and additional camping kit, so just the time (permission from ‘er indoors) and locations to finalise.
I do need a decent Camping knife though. I’d be interested to know when a Jacklore is available to buy.
Keep up the excellent camps and ride outs with the gang. I’ve subscribed to Lord Dickies’ channel too.
I look forward to the next one. Best wishes to you and your family for the New Year.
Cheers
Des
Excellent Des, get out there and live and enjoy life, thats what we are here for.
I hope to be building more Classic bushcraft knives in the new year, I don't build them in large numbers and they soon get snapped up.
Best thing is to watch for a video to drop on Jacklore YT channel and when it does drop me an message, you can find contact details on the about page of this channel
Sandy
Thanks for the video
That looked fab. Your sleeping bag looks like it folds up really small. Great to find a small bag that does the job in winter.
Hi Steve, The bag is OK for most seasons, it's actually only 3 season rated but provided temps don't drop below 8C I'm ok in it. I always check the forecast before a camp to decide what equipment to take with me. I was just about warm enough on this camp
Your biggest danger alone camping is not wildlife but deranged people you have to fear most! Here in America you have to carry in the event. Sad but true Happy New Year Sandy and to the entire family.
Thanks Frederic, yes another Human mooching about the woods in the small hours would have me on my guard
By the way love your camp knife I bought from you which you remembered arrived so fast to Florida. Still want to buy the hornet with incorporated fire starter flint striker in sheath. I know you stoped exports but wish you could make an exception for me as our transaction went smoothly.
@@WiltshireMan remember - they don`t like it up `em!
Keeping it real. Respect!
You are a tough nut Sandy. I do not even consider motocamping until April 😂. So I watched this in bed with a cup of coffee instead.
Great end of year wet camp and welcome to 2024. Let me wish you a successful and healthy 2024 for you and yours and watch you smash that 50k subscriber count and onwards towards the 100k YT award you deserve.
Thanks Robert, It would be nice to see the channel grow a bit more, it's taken a long time to get to where I am now (since 2009) so I must be one of the slowest growing channels on here!
Always lovely to join you, W.M. Thank you. Saw this the other day, and thought of you: “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul”
― John Muir 1838-1914
Thats a nice quote Barry
Looks great! This same night, I was on top of Beacons Batch, up on the Mendip Hills. Wet night, wasn’t it, for both of us.Storm Gerrit certainly was a good one.
All the best.👍🏾⛺️
Yes it was, I enjoyed Storm Gerrit
WOW! This really inspired me and made me think . Loved the bit about ancestry and the deeper stuff! We need to slow down and spend time to reflect . Loved this video and how you try and live life to the fullest ! Thanks. Inspired by you !
Thats great to know Peter, I think being down to earth and keeping things simple leads to a less troubled path through life:)
Hi Sandy, nobody can say that you are not dedicated to wild camping. The wet weather we had lately has certainly been non stop, you have been brave to venture out and camp in it. All the best for 2024 and fingers crossed we get a much drier year. One for your camping and two for my cycling adventures. Cheers.
Hi Charles, Yes it has been a wet one thats for sure, I actually love being out in these conditions provided I end up warm and dry:) It was lovely to spend the night out in the woods:) Good health for the New Year
Sandy
@@WiltshireManmust admit, there’s something about being tucked away in your tent/tarp when the weather is rotten. Feels like you’re surviving all on your own
Well, that looks miserable out there, but you like that sort of thing. 😊
Wishing you all the best in 2024 Sandy.
I believe the camo pattern of the tarp is Danish Flectarn. I have a pair of combat trousers which are very similiar. Its a great camo but the Danes have now adopted MTP, same as Brit Army and who can argue with that?
Great video, hope that was a single malt you where drinking, that would keep you going on its own. 🤣👍
A lovely relaxing camp listening to the rain, eating curry and sipping whiskey, what could be better....... nothing apart from the weather.
A good stealth camp to end 2023 bro. Safe travels. Ken.
Sandy, thank you for another great video in testing conditions and for all your content in 2023. Good health and well being to you and your family in 2024. All the best.
All the best for the new year Charles:)
Excellent way to end the year Sandy! As far as your knife goes, I agree 100% with you. If one knife could do everything, there would be such a variety (Classic, Camp, Whittler, Wasp, Wisp, etc...)! Really glad that you put out one more video before the end of the year. Hope your Christmas was all that you wanted it to be with your Family! Wishing you and yours a Fantastic start to the New Year! Stay Safe and Healthy my Friend!!
Thanks Dan,
Yes a knife is just like any other tool, One knife will simply not do it all, Ideally you want a Whittler for whittling, a Classic for general bushcraft, an Opinel for simple food prep and a flat knife for butter.
Talking of tools, the spoon you carved got eaten by Zeta, I got it out for this trip but it went missing, found it in the dogs bed chewed up :(. How did you get on with the chess pieces?
Best wishes for the new year
Sandy
Another great video Sandy, although I did have a chuckle when after explaining why you were using the Opinel, i.e. using the correct tool for the job, you were then stirring your curry with an old butter knife!
Looking forward to more from you in 2024.
Yes I know but there is a reason why I had to do that which I didn't explain in the video. My Dog Zeta chewed the wooden spoon that I normally pack
Nice looking stove and pot. If I get another my wife may sign me up for stovers anonymous. Trangia, Coleman 533, Jetboil, Caldera cone are probably enough but…
I don’t normally comment Sandy but happy new year❤
Quote of the year
“The mysteries of the cosmos answered by a swig of whiskey”
Loved that monologue being a thinker myself.

Hahaa Thanks for the comment Dave, certainly had a few on this video.
HNY Sandy! My 30 year old Opinel nr 10 is still my grab and go knife. For some reason I couldn't lock it so I made a notch in the ring myself. Works great. Great video again. Its a long time ago that you took the K1 out with you 🙂. 73 de Joël
Just had a chat on 80m with G4FAD, yes will have to do a /p video at some point
All that pondering and sipping I'm surprised you remembered to climb into the sack!!!! Good one sandy
Happy new year and Best Wishes for 2024 🎇🌟👍I like your tarp, the Danish Flecktarn works surprisingly well in the British woods.
Thanks Robin, yes the cammo did blend in very well. Happy New year
All the Best for the New Year Sandy. I always enjoy your you tubes and the fact you brave the British Weather is just a sign of your TRUE GRIT British Nature. Thanks for always making me smile. I hope 2024 brings us lots of finer days. You are a RAMBO...THANKS ❤
Hahaa never been called a "Rambo" before :) Best wishes for the new year
There is no afterlife, Sandy. One go, and that's your lot. You've done your part in the _game of life,_ and passed on your DNA.
We came from the soil, and we'll end up back there, one way or another. (Sea burials excluded.)

Absolutely superb, don't you worry about falling branches in that high wind?
Yes, thats the reason why I camped close to the upwind edge of the woodland, there were only small trees behind me@@alant5335
Very philosophical Sandy on this camp mate. Nice video and take care. Best wishes for the New Year. Roy (oz)

Nice video. Onions much easier to chop if you halve in the other direction and leave the root in place whilst chopping 😊
I'll try and remember this tip for next time:)
Excellent video to end the year on, thanks. The light you saw was probably someone looking for the Indian restaurant. Happy new year.
Hahaa yes they may well have smelled it:)
Nothing like decent cooked food when wild camping!
Great video sandy although I’m not sure I would want to stay overnight in those wet clothes and no fire to warm up

I shall be hopefully be doing a lot more camping in the new year Daz, it's getting colder now so I'll be using my hot tents
@WiltshireMan I'll look forward to that. I'd like to try that but doesn't get cold enough here unfortunately. I see your copping a cold spell now. All the best.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video Sandy. Right up my street. Simple setup away from it all. I do understand what you're saying about DNA being passed down and the cosmos. When I think about camping alone in the woods (from home), it always seems a bit daunting, but when I'm actually there, and tuned into nature and my surroundings, I just sort of settle and everything is okay. Thanks for all of your great videos this year. Looking forward to watching more next year. Happy New Year Sandy. - Ben

I really enjoyed your video Sandy, takes me back many years. I wouldn’t be sipping whisky though, I worked in a distillery for about 8 years, can’t stand the taste now, a fine old brandy would go down really well!! Looking forward to your next video. All the best, John
