- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater / Underground, SSX, MX vs ATV, Skate, and other extreme sports games were extremely popular in the late 90s and early 2000s. But, as time has gone on, these games have fallen off the radar. In today's video I am going to tell you about the rise and fall of extreme sports games.

It’s extreme sports in general, not just games. Remember how big stuff like the X games used to be? All over ESPN. Highlights galore... couldn’t tell you the last time I saw extreme sports on ESPN now. It for some reason feels like then being extremely popular is a relic of the past.
Honestly me and my friends when we don’t feel like playing anything like Rainbow or Apex just hop on Skate 3, we say we need more skate games and the like
I’m jealous.. on ps5/4 and can’t even play any of the “skate” classics :/ I loved skate 2.. idk why it seemed like right in the middle of when they actually cared still about skate games/xtreme sports and didn’t half ass it..

THUG 2, SSX3 , and Skate 2 are all masterpieces
Steep was absolutely fantastic, a super nice change of pace from the market of a whole bunch of shooters. Still holds up super well 5 years later. The devs that did Steep are releasing a promising new game called Riders Republic, focused on like BMXing and stuff, you should check it out! Excited to see if they'll ever announce a Steep 2 at some point.
It's interesting how you didn't mention THPS 1+2 at all, I know it's not technically a new game but it is certainly a big step in the right direction for those games!
He literally said THPS is one of the sickest games on planet earth and I quote “don’t @ me” at 0:50 what are you talking about 🤣🤣 lol besides that,, being that I was around for all Tony hawks pro skater/ THUG 1 and 2, let’s be honest underground was one of the best story lines especially at the time, American waste land as well. They were goated because of the era of viva la bam, jackass, wild boys. It featured way more pro skaters and famous idols of the time, customization of boards, clothes, being able to get off your deck, ride bikes, vandalize, open world maps. It was way ahead of its time. Thugger 1/2 were peak highlights of my childhood and many others I’m sure would agree..

I remember playing Tony Hawks pro skater when I was little, actually so little that I didn't even understand the controls, but god, the game gives me nostalgia and it sadness me that I lost the manual for the game because I literally have no idea what to do or what each button does. Sure, I could go and trial-and-error it out somehow, but idk man, I don't wanna do that
I've been thinking about extreme sports games lately as it was my fav genre growing up. It's sad that they don't make as much as they used to, and the few titles that occasionally come up I make sure to buy them to support the genre. Ever since I saw the trailer for Riders Republic I've been thinking of this game, it looks promising and so much fun.
Btw I don't see many mentioning MTX MotoTrax but it was my fav motocross game with the right balance between career mode and freestyle motocross. Loved it!

What about Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2? That got rave reviews last year.

Nice summary! Games have similarities to "fashion", there are trends were the industry try make games that earn them money. So if you are close to normal regarding being social, you probably try to follow what were supposed to be trendy. I grew up in a small town close to both sea and mountains, so often very delayed what was popular activities. For some odd reason I were the first in my neighborhood to have downhill skies, my family were "just" regular workers. Were for me to go outside winter time and start moving up the mountain and ski down between trees and cliffs and rocks. I see myself as a nerd, but instead of playing such computer games a lot I trained martial arts and did some "extreme sports", but mostly not what were "in" at a time.
I love these kind of chaotic games, they make you feel for the sport and it’s fun with some having level editors and music editors, to the chaotic nature with intense blur from speed, scale and size. My first sports game ever was MX vs ATV Untamed, and I grew up with it until 2016 when my Xbox 360 gave out and its hard drive failed. That game had some great memories of my friends playing tag on split screen and being chaotic in the game. The mood of the game, from the title screen, map design, music choice, and the gameplay is not something you find anymore. THQ and Rainbow Studios barely exist anymore and I wish they came back to revive the extreme sports genre of games. I loved both companies and it gave me some fun memories.
Side note; I still have access to the game due to my Xbox, but it’s not the same that I don’t have the same friends when I was 5 years old
You completely glossed over the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 Remake, my 90's brain completely ate that up, I'm sure you'd love it~
Fuck bro, we need them to bring these games back, i know they recently came out with a remastered Tony Hawk 1 and 2, but we also need a remastered Aggressive Inline, Dave Mirra’s Pro BMX 1 and 2, Matt Hoffman’s Pro BMX 1 and 2 , and of course can’t forget one of my favorites, Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer.

SSX (the original GameCube version) is cool af.
The original SSX is only on the PS2, the next 3 sequels are on the GameCube tho.

2 words for you… RIDERS REPUBLIC. The biggest extreme sports game since THPS, it takes everything great about Steep and cranks it to 11 💯💯 Also, on a side note, I’ve never played a Far Cry that I didn’t LOVE, FC6 is just right around the corner too 😎

More a fan of the 80s myself. Grew up in both decades. Mention the 80s to someone 20 now...... You were born in the 1800s. Lol.
There was also the arcade machines xtreme sports era that lead up to the PS2 and home console era mid to late 90s, such as Top Skater 1+2, Aqua Jet, Wave Runner, Alpine Racer, etc
Downhill Dominations was also underrated (not sure if it fits here)
Guys look up riders republic it’s a coming out extreme sports game that looks really good

I was born in 1980 and I remember playing 720, paperboy, California games and I surfing game I think was called hang ten. I was too young to have a console of my own but I would always watch my brother play on his commoder 64 and beg him to let me have a turn. Lol

I always wondered if Jet Set Radio could be considered as one since it's technically based on wheel-based street sports peppered with iconic elements that distinguished the series.
Skate is (surprisingly) pretty popular with the younger gen, but nothing really from before that.

I mean 2021 and 2022 are great years for extreme sports games, Riders Republic, Shredders (both amazing games), new Session updates. In a few years we maybe we get skate 4 too, pretty decent for a couple of years if you ask me.

The game i remember playing was 1080 for the N64. Even if i wasn't very good at it, it was still fun.

Did you really say halo released too many games in a short span of time? Nah they released a few games that each failed heavily in either multiplayer or campaign, and is now hopefully gonna be better

How can you make a video about extreme sports game dying and not mention Riders Republic? It feels like this video should be called "The Rise And Fall of Skateboarding Games" not Extreme sports game. If you haven't checked Riders Republic out I really think you should take a look at it, it's like Steep but on steroids.
Anyway I think you made a great video I just felt like you missed the direction a bit.
So the reason there was such a large emphasis on skateboarding games is because skateboarding games were by far the most popular extreme sports games and they helped to make the entire genre what it was. Thanks for the feedback though! Riders republic looks really cool, i’m just scared that it’s a Ubisoft game. I’m not a huge fan of Ubisoft personally.

Nice video but I don't understand the necessity and derogatory attitude towards today's kids for playing such games, and to be honest, as a millennial who knows maybe a lot of us would have done the same thing if we had today's games and choices back then, so blame corporations, parents and most importantly blame the governments for allowing predatory gambling schemes in video-games targeted towards younger individuals.

Lol SNOW? Steep is a much better game. SNOW also has a bunch of bugs and you are forced to go through the tutorial no skips. As well as making much of the game based on micro transactions later on.
