Don't forget he loses his AWD, (another weight addition), guess Portland doesn't get as much snow as say Detroit? (near the same distance from equator). Also, if you do mod's it's easier to get more HP out of the WRX engine than the STI engine at the lower cost side (I'm not sure if you had a near unlimited budget if it switches back).

They are very lightweight (Around 750kg) have ton of space in the back and they are really slim, they drive almost like a gokart.
The most powerful ones are 113hp, but you can put a nice Audi TT engine in there, the 1.8T and push that to over 300hp.

The stereotype was established in the 90's, back when the Miata had really soft lines and cute little pop-up headlights. A lot of them were originally bought by women. However, as time has gone by, the miata has butched up a little and the older cars have been hit hard by the aftermarket bandwagon. As time has gone by since its introduction, the reputation of the car has changed from cute little toy to 'the embodiment of cheap automotive excellence'.

It's not blindingly fast, but it's under 3,000lbs, has 4 doors and a big trunk, brilliant suspension, good gas mileage. I could have gone for something more powerful like an STI but I'm glad I didn't, I absolutely love this car!

I currently own a 16 STI, it's great for me as a daily driver with the winters we get and fun enough. But the most fun car I personally owned was my SR20DET swapped s13. That car was around 2500lbs, had limited slip diff, about 275 whp. It was highly modified and required a lot of attention, but handled so well and always put a smile on my face. I shipped that car to Guam when I was in the military and it eventually got a lot of rust being in the tropical weather surrounded by ocean. That was a decade ago and now I own a house, have a career, and don't have time to be fixing stuff all the time, but it's my dream to get a nice imported jdm one someday.

I've driven an MX-5. I've driven a C6 Vette. I've owned 3 Nissan Z-cars, 2 Mustang GT's, a Neon SRT-4, Sentra Spec V. My current Focus ST is as much, if not more fun than any of them. Despite weighing 3200 lbs, it still manages to have somewhat of a go-cart feel. Also very practical. I live in Central TX, where AWD isn't really needed.

I had an MX5 until the weekend, as well as my WRX. It had been lowered and given stiffer springs for even better handling, and is the best car I've ever driven on fast country roads. The problem is that most of my driving is on freeways and fast highways. And the MX5 is pretty hopeless on those. Another consideration is that, as you said, when you're in an MX5 drivers often either don't see you or just flat out decide to bully you; that just doesn't happen when you're in a WRX.

I own a 2011 STI and a 1995 Miata. The STI is somewhat modified but the Miata has a lot of work done to it. The STI is still mostly practical for all of the reasons you listed AND it's fun to drive. The Miata is not practical at all and really not very comfortable with the suspension work that I've done but it's SO much fun that it more than makes up for it. I don't subscribe to the idea of having a "beater" car and a car that you love because, more than likely, you'll more often be driving the "beater" and not get to enjoy yourself. The STI is only heavy because it's AWD, hatchback (if u get the hatchback version) and has a 2nd-row seat. Although i love hatchbacks because you can fit a lot of stuff and actually have room in the back to fit adults, etc.
Primary weight contributor is it's AWD system, and the fact that it has 3-locking differentials unlike the WRX, (more moving parts.)
Btw, i agree that the STI is an improvement over an Acura Integra, unless you're broke and don't wanna pay much in maintenance. But finances aside, i'd still take a STI over any small Honda any day. Except a Honda S2000, which have been discontinued since ~2004.

Extremely practical, great steering, with very satisfying levels of acceleration above 3K rpm...I'm getting dedicated winter rims/tires and ditch the Dunlop tires for summer oriented HP tires. A brz aint slow... It needs better tires and it's just fine. Mine had full exhaust, CAI, crank pulley, a tune and it was responsive and fun to drive. Just don't have anybody else in the car tho, it really doesn't like to have 2 or more people in it

n0ledge I'd go with the MK7 GTI to be honest. good power stock, and a basic ecu tune gets you at least +60HP.

+Abdulla AlAmeri people that say it's slow obviously have never owned one... I would say 175rwhp with a 2700 weight. People just jump on the bandwagon. People tend to forget that it is not a straight line car, you totally missed the point. This thing was made for corners and track use. Try taking one to a track day and see how much fun and competitive this car is to all the modified cars there, it's scary good at what it's made for.

I did the spark plugs on my Legecy. Its not a turbo so that makes a difference. I removed the air cleaner housing, the battery and the box the battery is in. The plugs boots are hard to get a hand on and you have to pull real hard and turn to a 45 degree angle. It took me a little less than 3 hours but that is with a break of about 1/2 hour. I put 60,000 miles on my in 21 months yes 21 months less than 2 years. Still runs great. Never in the shop. I also have a 2004 F150 with a 4.6 and the back plugs are a little hard to do. Its been a great truck to.

I knew for years that I wanted a WRX. It was truly my dream car. When I was old enough and had enough resources to buy a car, it was on the top of my list of cars to test drive. After testing out the WRX (along with 28 other vehicles), I chose the Fiesta ST. It has less horsepower, but is also much lighter (2720 lbs vs 3455 lbs) and is a LOT more fun to drive in my opinion. I chucked my ego to the curb and got what really felt right. It does everything I need it to in all seasons. One year later & 18K miles I have zero regrets. Good luck with whatever you go with next.

Put on a pair of decent DOT 200 Wear Rating tires on the front and AutoCross the FiestaST! You'll have a lot of fun, and it teaches you what your car can handle, and you become a really confident driver with your car!
AutoCross is also cheap, usually ranges from $35-$55 an event (depending on your region and your membership status). Those cares are REALLY good around the courses. :D

2016 Miata Club + gently used Toyota Tacoma Crew Cab 4x4.
Ultimate combination of fun and practicality. You can always put some stiffer springs on the Miata and start autocrossing if you want to get some track experience, which I'd strongly recommend...
You have no idea how much you learn from track driving until you've done it. Drifting in particular gives you a great sense of security knowing that you can maintain control of the car if it breaks loose.

If you are plan owning two cars you should buy a van, pickup truck or hatchback as your daily driver. They have the properties you want, like big cargo space, seats for 5, good fuel economy, etc. Then you could buy some unpractical, nimble 2-seater, like the MX-5 or Z3 (or even Caterham) for the weekends. GL with the car search!

For my "practical car", the wife and I have a 2014 Nissan Rogue SL (AWD). This is a very good driving car (fun on the Dragon for sure), great in the snow, rides high enough up to be good for big framed folks (I'm 6'2") and can carry a bunch while getting good MPG. The only downside is being a bit under-powered. It is a 2.5L 4-banger and it needs a bit more power (additional 25HP/tq would be a good start). I recommend you go drive one for yourself and see if it fits your needs.

Let me tell you, a low powered, lightweight car sounds "fun" and possibly practical (though 2 seaters are not), but it gets old fast getting smoked by nissan altimas. Only lightweight car i'd consider is an Atom. I'd suggest looking at a RS. That right there is like the STI just kicked up quite a few notches. Most fun I've had with a car since I originally bought my Evo 8 back in the day new. Check that, "more" fun. It's a special car.

Sounds you have a personal preference! Congrats! From the sound of it it sounds like you prefer an STI over a the new Miata. Now the question is... have you lived with either car? or driven either? I have a personal preference too!! Yay! I thought I'd share. I have owned, flogged, tracked and daily driven an RX8 an RX7, an NB Miata, E36/E46 M3, 2x WRX STI's, a Boss 302 an S2k/8th gen Si and C5/C6 Z06 and I can wholeheartedly say that the 2016 ND Miata is hands down the best drivers cars out of any of these cars just short of a Lotus Elise. No its not going to beat much off the line but when you hit that start stop button and blip that throttle and really feel that power plant frame connecting every sensation into your hands, feet, and ass... and even better, you throw it into a corner and feel the double wishbones up front telling your hands feet and ass every single detail about the road you're fighting with, You might become a believer too. Go to a dealership and test drive one. You might forget to keep your butt from leaking because all the focus is going into the smile on your face. ;) Mazda really created something special for people that love the FEELING of driving rather than creating something that moves quickly. I will admit the moment I was finished test driving the ND (Which I spend a good 50 miles in) I went straight to a Jaguar dealership to get a feel of an FType S... Still can't believe I'm saying this... That Miata will ruin you. Drive one.

I was just kidding but unfortunately, I know first hand about the stigma of small cars. I used to have a BMW M Roadster and everyone used to poke fun at me. LOL. (Partially because I lifted weights a lot back then and was too huge for the car.). It was all in good fun though. But yeah, that stigma is there. I went on to drive normal M3's after that and my buddies didn't giggle anymore! :o)
