- Demonstrating how to cut dovetail joints by hand. It takes time and patience but is well worth it for the results! The tails can be placed closer together than what is possible using a router bit. The specific type of dovetail joint in this video is a through dovetail.

That's impressive, working with wood is not easy. Awesome!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
It is if you know what you're doing
This is just perfect, I love it
Great, I'm pleased to hear it. Thanks!
@kiwiworkshop
Beautiful work, great editing too.
Something I really dreaded in carpentry school but was actually pretty fun.
Agree, hand cut dovetails are fun! It takes some time and patience, but is worth it for the results.
@@kiwiworkshop Color and shape are perfect!
Watching your work makes me wanna run to my shop. How do you finish your work? What kind of oil do you use?
That's great! I usually use either Tung oil with citrus thinner or Danish oil. Danish oil will dry faster than pure Tung oil.
I wish I could work that fast bro.. LOL..
Beautiful work man. This is the skill I'm most interested to learn atm and I can do it indoors with my small vice connected to my small workbench indoors..
I love the look of these dovetails bro.. The contrast between the wood colours is stunning.. Great job my friend
Wish I could work that fast too, it wasn't easy fitting this build into a 1 minute RUclips short!
Glad you like the dovetails, they do look really nice with the contrasting wood colours. Thanks again and good luck with your woodworking!
Man that’s nice 🤙🏼
Simplicity at its finest
Perfect woodworking
is that mahogany?
nicely done
It's thermally modified Beech. Thanks!
That's beautiful ❤️
Thanks, glad you like it 🙂
Very nice, super clean. Good job mate 👌
Amazing‼️👏🏻
Perfect!!!!😊
Beautiful
Perfect!
Those tools❤ I want to become a carpenter now
It is very satisfying working with hand tools
Nicely done-for a Kiwi.
Lovely work.
Thank you!
Precise!
So good
Super easy. Anyone can do that...
Kidding, I'm just learning joinery and it takes a lot of practice making dovetails that fit and look that good. nice job
Thanks! With practice, anyone can do it!

Nice job for sure.
Nice 👌

Where can you purchase the measurement tool with the adjuster for depth?
Following
It's called a "wheel marking gauge". The one I have is by Veritas and doesn't appear to be available on Amazon. Here is a similar one which has good reviews: amzn.to/3CGfx1f
masterpiece
Thanks!
It's magical!🥳
Thanks!
Cool!!! 🤠👍
Thanks !
Impressive
SUPER 👍👍👍
Mmmmhhhhaaahh!! Beautiful!
Wow👏👏👏
like it.
I've never seen anyone cut an notch out of the tails back. Ive undercut my tails and pins on the inside but never on the backs. I must try it looks like it works. 👍😅
I've actually only just started with the notch. You need to angle the tail board down slightly to allow the line of notches to "catch" the top of the pin board. I'm not 100% convinced yet, as you still need to hold the tail board down rather firmly to keep it in place when marking the pins.
@@kiwiworkshop yeah I get you. I have a small 90 degree fence jig that I clamp in the vice to help keep them align when marking which I like but i was wondering if your notch would make things ever easier.
Does the have any benefits for ease of assembly 🤔 😜👍
Lovin the content.
@@benenlynch9733 I don't think the notch has any benefits for assembly, it's simply there to help align the two components for marking. Another option is clamping a metal ruler on the back of the tail board inline with the marking line. I might try that next time to see if it works better than the notch. I've seen people use a fence to as you've described. But guess it won't work if the tails are slightly oversized? There is also obviously the rabbet (rebate) method but that seems like quite a bit of effort just to get the parts aligned.
@@kiwiworkshop yeah the ruler idea might work actually might try. Nice to chat to someone who knows. 👍
So the harder wood is made thinner and the softer wood thicker for the sake of a stronger structure.
This is delicate work!
Indeed!
Nice.
You do good work mate, what timbers are you using over there?(Assuming you are over there😁)
They look nice
Thanks! Over here I like to work with Rimu and Silver Beech mainly. For this video it was Pine and thermally modified Silver Beech for the dark wood.
These take to much time or effort .
Nice Continue
The time and effort is always worth it for the results!

What is the roller cutter tool you use at about 5 seconds in? It says "Deritos Canada" on it.
It's a wheel marking gauge, this one is made by Veritas
@@kiwiworkshop oh okay...I hadn't seen one before. And lol .. I guess I need to get a new pair of glasses! I thought "Deritos" was a strange name (and a misspelling of Doritos the chips). 😂
😄
What is the distance tool used in the start called?
It's a wheel marking gauge
Файно)
What are the first couple tools called? The roller and whatever came next?
Wheel marking gauge and sliding bevel
@@kiwiworkshop thank you
Thanks! The dark coffee colored wood is thermally modified beech (steam treated) to bring out the dark color.

Can someone give me a name for that round marking gauge he used, seems like it would be better than the ones I’m used to
Thanks
It's called a circle marking gauge. The one I have is made by Veritas.
Would you please list the tools you used here? I'm trying to get myself started. I am an amateur amateur...
Wheel marking gauge, mechanical pencil, marking knife, ruler, machinists square, sliding bevel, chisel
@@kiwiworkshop Thank you so very much!!
Люблю смотреть, и пытаться делать своими руками. 😂😮😊
Good luck! 😊
Pencil lines left on the wood: poor craftsmanship.
Marking knife lines left on wood: precision work.
Beautiful.
Thanks!

Can someone name all the tools he uses? I'm that radial knife thing was amazing. Thanks in advance.
It's a wheel marking gauge
А клей здесь зачем ?
По классике - соединение "ласточкин хвост"
- изначально бесклеевое.
I see the glue as an insurance policy. Wood can be unpredictable and shrinkage could result in a weak joint. But you are correct, most of the time with a well cut dovetail joint, you could get away without glue.
🤩
Hey friend! Quick question for ya! I can't message you on RUclips so I'm just gonna ask in comment lol. What's the easiest way to find an exact bevel angle?
Hey! For Dovetails, they are often expressed with ratios which is usually 1:6 (9.5 degrees) or 1:8 (7.1 degrees). You can find the exact angle by drawing a triangle on a piece of scrap with these ratios. i.e. draw a triangle with the square sides at 1 inch and 6 inches (or 1 inch and 8 inches). Make sure there is a square edge on your scrap wood and draw the 1 inch line directly on the square edge. Then take your sliding bevel (you see me use one in this video), push it up against the square edge of your scrap wood and adjust the angle until it matches the slope of your triangle. Hope that makes sense! If you google for dovetail ratios you will probably see some examples.
@@kiwiworkshop you're awesome! Thank you!! I'm gonna have to try it out on my next project!!
What's the name of that tool to measure width, please?
It's a wheel marking gauge
Thank you for asking. I had the same question 🙂.
Thank you for the reply. I like it when the uploader cares enough to reply to viewers' questions 🙏👌💯
@@kiwiworkshop Many thanks! In Brasil, we call it "graminho".
i have ptsd from making dovetails.
😂
what type of wood?
Pine and the dark wood is thermally modified (stream treated) beech
conveniently skipped the 2 hours he spent on adjusting it so that it fits after he adds some glue
No adjusting at all after the glue is added. Once it's glued up, that's it!
The only reason I don’t do these types of joints is because of the math involved.
It's not too bad really and there is a method where you can use dividers to completely avoid doing any math.
Yah ik I just haven’t got into yet I’m planning on it tho
Don't you hate it when you forget to put the glue on before you join then
With dovetails, it's a good idea to do a "test fit" before adding the glue. If you need to make adjustments, you really don't want to be doing it with glue on the joint!
anyone know the name of the tool they use to mark the wood?
It's a wheel marking gauge
Excelente perfecto
Ласточкин хвост делать трудно, но эта зделана хорошо.
Thank you
красиво! я тоже умею так. только мне лень. и я на саморезы закручиваю.
Yes, I often just use screws too. All depends on the project!
What the first tool called, please
Its a wheel marking gauge
@@kiwiworkshop thanks dude. Tough luck with the rugby.

I own a router but get more enjoyment from cutting joints by hand. When there is time of course!
Name of the pencil marker
It's a pentel 0.5mm mechanical pencil amzn.to/3vQTIbm
Man can you point me in the right direction to learn how to do this?
I would recommend watching RUclips videos where someone steps you though step-by-step. If you search for "hand cut dovetails" in RUclips, you will see some good videos by Rob Cosman, Matt Estlea and Jonathan Katz-Moses. You can also buy magnetic dovetail saw guides to help until you can saw without them. Jonathan Katz-Moses sells a popular one.
Hello, can I use your videos on Instagram?
Salaam hello how are you sir?
Not easy?. . lol . . .Try it with steel, ask any toolmaker friend . . .the finished product was perfect just not so hard to do with wood. . .now that scribe, who do U think made that !
too fast
RUclips shorts are limited to 1 minute. I couldn't make this any slower.
