Hand Tools Only: Dovetail Box Made with ZERO Electricity

- I shaved a few cents off of my electric bill by using only hand tools to build this cherry dovetail box to hold my chisels. It only took me about ten times longer to make. Worth it!
I don't think a woodworker is defined by whether they use only hand tools, some power tools, or even a CNC to build their projects, but I do think that every woodworker should have at least some hand tool experience. It's a little slower, but if done properly it's more precise, and the satisfaction you get from building something the same way it would have been built 200 years ago is immense.

Have you done a video on beginner hand tools? I'm new to this venture and would like to really dive in
@@Beastie132 I haven't done a video myself but I can suggest a few good resources. Both Paul Sellers and Rob Cosman have great videos on hand tool woodworking that are worth watching... There are loads more, but those two taught me just about everything I know about hand tools.
Yes, Paul Sellers definitely and Wood by Wright
And Rex Kruger, another 100% hand tool maker/presenter
On big lid of gluebot there is a notch, the red cap over the nozzle must come off when applying glue. It hangs loose.
The red cap fitts on the top notch on the lid.
🙄😉😀
Good job, man! No music, no noise. No annoying intro. Just pure woodworking. Love it!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm trying lots of different styles and trying to find what viewers like the most. I'll try to make more like this!
No annoying intro...
@@dkbuilds yea the sound of saws is like asmr 👌
Yes exactly what Mike said 8 months ago. Pure woodworking
Agreed
Great job, I’m fed up of seeing workshop full of expensive machinery which I don’t have. I’ve now subscribed.
Excellent! Welcome to my channel Bryan!
BUt this hand tools are also expensive xD
Those hand tools are super expensive here in Brazil.
Can't believe you used electric lights to see by, i'm so sick of this modern electric woodworking :P
😆
And the vacuum cleaner at the very end!
@@hugoblin7249 such sacrilege, in the old days we would just eat it
Not to mention the music in the ear buds!
Better than candle light.
I'm just starting my woodworking journey, and living in NYC, I have opted to go all hand tools, for now. Loved this video. Very well edited, showing us what needed to be seen without anything extraneous.
That's awesome! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found it useful. Welcome to your new favorite hobby!
Beautiful process and immensely satisfying (for you and the viewer). I love to work "without electricity" but it does have its problems. A cedar cot I was building this way - 88 mortise/tenon joints, 4 bookmatched panels etc., all hand cut, sanded to 2000 etc. and our son arrived 2 weeks early, well before it was finished. My wife bought me a Festool Domino system to avoid it happening again.
Not long after, I was building a set of built-in drawers, all hand-cut dovetails, blind/half-blind and loving the process. My wife must have missed me on those lonely nights while I was happy in my shop so she bought me a Leigh dovetail jig system.
I love to hand-thickness, sand to a polish and take my sweet time finishing my projects. Another pair of bedside tables was taking a little longer than my girl wanted, so she bought me a helical thicknesser.
I'm currently working as slowly as I can on some hand-cut "bandsaw boxes" as I don't have a bandsaw... :-)
Cheers and thanks from Sydney - Dave
Wonderful! I finally found someone who keeps it simple and uses hand tools!! And the video isn’t glamorous with music and talking.
Thanks for the kind words Jonathan! Glad you liked the video!
Well done, no anoying music, no screaming of all kinds of expensive tools, just hands, PERFECT
Thanks janeZ! Glad you liked it!
No background sound track. Just the sounds of a sharp woodworker using sharp and well-maintained tools to fabricate an heirloom quality box for his faithful friends in which to rest between tasks. Oh, and breathing. As God breathed into us the breath of life, so you breathed into well cured cherry a new life. I appreciated all that and more in watching and listening to your project coming to life.
Thank you.
May the Peace provided by the carpenter from Nazareth be yours. May the blessings of the Creator be with you, yours, and all those who love you and whom you love.
Wow thank you for your beautifully written thoughts. I found this process incredibly peaceful and I'm glad that you did too!
What Mike Dolganov said “Good job, man! No music, no noise. No annoying intro. Just pure woodworking. Love it!”
I'm glad you liked it Grab! I'll try to make more videos with this format in the future!
Beautiful build, love the way your planes sing as they cut & smooth the wood
Thank you so much John! I'm glad you liked it!
This was so satisfying to watch. You've got a great skill set and knowledge of your tools. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Good job!!
Thanks, Keith!!
Glorious. Love the bit at the end with the shavings revealing the final box. Good fun and turned out really clean.
Thanks Warrior, glad you liked it! Thanks for watching :)
Exactly what I was looking for..no power tools... thanks for uploading...keep it rolling
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, I'll try to make more videos like this in the future :)
Definitely have not watched enough of you videos on RUclips. Rapidly becoming my favourite, the silence of the work is amazing. Really well done 👍
Awesome, thank you Simon! Welcome to my channel! :)
All the sounds that come with handwork are beautiful to listen to. Beautiful results, someday I'll somehow find time to enjoy making these sounds myself
Thanks so much Matt! I'm glad you enjoyed watching (and listening).
Priceless. Love it.
Thank you so much at last someone who makes boxes with hand tools and doesn’t play unnessesary music I really enjoy listing to natural normal sounds from a woodworker so nice thank you
Thank you Harri, I'm glad you enjoyed the format! I'll be sure to make more videos like this one!
Sweet! Hands off to you! Beautiful job. Patience is a virtue!🌳🌲
Thanks so much Jody. I agree about patience being a virtue!
I love this video because he doesn't need electricity or power tools. He doesn't need music playing over the important sounds that the hand tools make. Videos that play music over the natural tool sounds are almost unwatchable to me. This video will be on my playlist to watch over and over again because it's straight forward and no unnecessary bells and whistles. Thanks dk builds👍
Thanks, Cedric!! I've been trying out different video formats and this kind definitely seems the most popular. I'll make more like this one!
Excellent craftsmanship presented in a superb video! No nonsense just getting to see you do the work. The outro reveal of the box was awesome! Thanks for the great content.
Thanks for the kind words, Dextrian!
I love your no nonsense approach, very inspiring.
Thanks, Keith! And thank you for watching!
You just set the standard for how all woodworking videos should be. No talking, just doing. I learned so much from watching you use planers to smooth out planks you sawed in half. I didn't think that was possible (I'm just starting out). Thank you for this wonderful lesson.
Thanks, Alex!! I'm glad you learned something. I'll make more videos like this in the future!
Love the sound of your tools
Thanks so much Daniel! I'll make sure to make more videos like this in the future :)
You did a great job on your dovetailed box, and your video skills are great as well :-) I envy your patience and your ingenuity !
Thank you for the kind words, Bill!
Been trying to find clear and simple instructions on making a box without shenanigans! Lovely video, thanks .
Thank you for the kind words! Hope you get some sleep soon! 😜
Well done DK. I enjoyed watching you transform the rough sawn board into a cool box (would be a great presentation style gift box). And, beyond watching your videos for enjoyment, I’m paying attention to your approach and preparing to employ more hand-tools in my woodworking. Enjoyed the clever ending too. That was fun!
Awesome!! I'm proud to have inspired you to start using more hand tools. Good luck, you're going to love it!
The way you freehand straight lines is otherworldly...
😇
The best noise in woodwork -- that of a sharp plane making a full length edge cut! Great job, too.
Agreed, such a satisfying sound. Thanks for watching Ian!
Absolutely wonderful video!!!🤩
Wow thank you Chauntese, I'm glad you liked it!!
Loved the reveal at the end. Thanks for the video! Very helpful
Glad you liked it Malak!!
Yay 😁. Enjoyed the cordless build! That, and the absence of a ridiculously expensive shop. Right up my alley. New subscriber.
Thank you! Welcome to my channel, happy to have you!
This is gorgeous! Well done!
Thanks Pete!
Love it . Simple and works .
Thanks so much ikust!
Thanks for showing this I’m thinking of trying to become a small box craftsman but I live in a car so I need hand tool only working
Thanks for watching! And, good luck on your woodworking journey!
Love the videos. My grandfather and his father were both into carpentry. Not masters or anything, but I was always impressed with what they built. I tried it for a semester in high school but it didn't really click. I'm wanting to give it another shot, but always feel discouraged when I think of my lack of space and funds for expensive tools. Was really nice seeing you build something simple yet beautiful with just your hands and basic tools, and I think that's just the sort of reminder I needed.
That's awesome, thank you for sharing Goats. My grandfather was the same way. Do give it another shot, if you are patient you can usually buy cheap used tools from someone getting out of the hobby and liquidating their tools. I've also had good luck at estate sales for hand tools. Best of luck in your woodworking journey!
You are a True Artist.
Thanks so much Stephen!
Good presentation, action speaks loudest.
Thank you so much!
This is soothing to watch. Exactly what I need because I can't afford all those power tools virtually all woodworking channels have.
Awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed it Paule!
Awesome piece of work!
Nice Japanese saw tools!
Thank you very much Paul!
What a peaceful build, and video!!
Thanks,
Adam
Thank you so much Adam, glad you enjoyed it!
@@dkbuilds As a GC and builder for over 20 years I’ve just begun my journey into woodworking and have so much to learn but I really enjoy your style of presentation!
I took this vo-tech class in high school, woodworking. I took a lot of vo-tech classes, because it was just big jerk-off, but this one time I had this teacher by the name of... Mr... Mr. Pike. I guess he was like a Marine or something before he got old. He was hard hearing. My project for his class was to make this wooden box. You know, like a small, just like a... like a box, you know, to put stuff in. So I wanted to get the thing done as fast as possible. I figured I could cut classes for the rest of the semester and he couldn't flunk me as long as I, you know, made the thing. So I finished it in a couple days. And it looked pretty lame, but it worked. You know, for putting in or whatnot. So when I showed it to Mr. Pike for my grade, he looked at it and said: "Is that the best you can do?" At first I thought to myself "Hell yeah, bitch. Now give me a D and shut up so I can go blaze one with my boys." I don't know. Maybe it was the way he said it, but... it was like he wasn't exactly saying it sucked. He was just asking me honestly, "Is that all you got?" And for some reason, I thought to myself: "Yeah, man, I can do better." So I started from scratch. I made another, then another. And by the end of the semester, by like box number five, I had built this thing. You should have seen it. It was insane. I mean, I built it out of Peruvian walnut with inlaid zebrawood. It was fitted with pegs, no screws. I sanded it for days, until it was smooth as glass. Then I rubbed all the wood with tung oil so it was rich and dark. It even smelled good. You know, you put nose in it and breathed in, it was... it was perfect.
Bro this is from breaking bad 😂
I appreciate your story. Thanks for sharing it. I hope you still have that box, although, my guess is, you passed it on, gave it, our of love, to a special person in your life. Otherwise, you must be that special person in your life. Either way, lesson(s) learned. Thank you.
And you fell in love and married the marine guy....🐒
Cool story bro,I hope you gave that box to your mother and not trade it for weed.
This poor people thinking this was a real story lmaooo
Awesome video and box!
Thank you for the kind words, Woodfather!
Another fantastic video - thank you so much DK!
Thanks so much for watching Nick!
The ring of that double sided handsaw is everything!
I know, right? It's so satisfying to hear!
I love the sound of that plane moving across the wood.
Thanks David, so do I!
Sweet fun man. Love it.
Thanks, man! I dig your channel!
One of the best woodworking videos, keep em coming
Thank you Abraham, I will!
something is very satisfying about working with hand tools
I agree Karthick!
Excellent! Only the music of creation, love it ❤
Thanks so much Adi!
Those are some bright candles mr zero electricity 😂good work!
XD Thanks!
Great work. Congrats!
Thank you Raul!
Nice idea and build.
Simple enough and pretty to see !
Thanks so much Dai! I appreciate the encouraging words!
Thank you for this lesson.
Thank you for watching!
Looks great! Lots of skill in that box 😁
Really enjoyed your video, thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching Johnny!
Excellent job!
Thanks, Nick!
i respect people who has the self-control to not flick their ryoba saw after each cut to clean up the saw dust jammed in between the saw tooth (at least that's why I flick mine, not because i giggle at that sound, i promise).
Lol I LOVE that sound!
Thank you for sharing and thanks for not having annoying music!
Glad you liked it!
This level of skill and craftsmanship is outright intimidating.
Well thanks, Martijn! I'm glad you liked it :) You can do it too if you try!
My thoughts as well, but it has als provided some inspiration to give er a go just the same.
Nice video. You can tell a real craftsman from the way his Japanese saws go "bwoinnnggg" at the end of every cut 😁.
Hahaha I love that sound!
Fine project! Loved the outro. Thx!
Thank you ee! I'm glad you liked it! :)
Love the sounds here. Good work
Thanks Jacob! :)
lol that was a pretty cool reveal. Nice little box. I like making things like this with hand tools when I don't have a project going. Its like a moment to slow down and just enjoy working the wood.
Totally agree! Much slower, but much more satisfying. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very nice work!
Thanks so much Diego!
Great skills mate!!
Thanks Dwayne!
I've watched this a few times over the last year or so of woodworking. I love the simplicity! No rabbet plane? Make it work another way!
That's awesome thanks Alex I'm really glad you liked the video! I still don't have a rabbet plane haha!
Good video with super results.
Thanks, David!
Nice job, nice presentation
Thanks, Howard!
What an absolute joy to behold.
Thank you so much tea, I’m glad you liked the video!
Beautiful build! I've been practicing woodworking without electricity almost every day in the last two months and made a few projects.
Nice! I am still learning hand tool woodworking myself. What have you built so far?
@@dkbuilds Also learning. Check out some pics: @bzamecnik at Instagram. In Thailand I made a folding ironing table, wall shelves in the shape of Czechia, a small table, box for coffee, console table, phone stand, a small plate below glass, jaws for a vise and some other small stuff.
Same boat for me! It's been a couple years at this point, but I don't always have a lot of time to spend in my shop, so it's still only been a few projects... Started with a (very) small workbench. Dovetail recipe card box (double dovetails), a cribbage board (I had some fun with it and used a woodburning tool to make a celtic weave around the border), and a magnetic knife strip made to just look like a board on the wall are a few of the other projects i've completed. And the most fun and important on for me so far - my sister's fiancee asked if I would make a box for the engagement ring. I used lumber from a walnut tree that grew in our grandparents' back yard. The inside cushion is lined with leather, the top is secured by magnets instead of being hinged, and the space where the box and lid meet is padded with leather as well.
Hand tool woodworking is one of the few things I've found that's relaxing and calming all while being labor intensive enough to break a sweat at times... The perfect mix of detailed precision work and creative, artistic design process... I wish I would've discovered this when I was a kid.
The ending reveal was worth it. That was a nice touch!
Thanks Tiruga!
thank you sharing your skills --- that was beautiful to watch
Thanks for the kind words Ian, glad you enjoyed it!
Well done and well-made video. Thanks.
Thank you so much Hobbyist! I'm glad the time I spent making it was worth it!

Great Job! Enjoyed watching you take rough timber to a fine piece in which to house the some of the tools you used.
Oh and by the way I used your pen & pencil box for inspiration to build 3 three boxes of my own for Christmas presents this past year
That's great! I'm happy to have inspired you!
Box presentation at end of video timeline is great!
Thanks so much Khd, glad you enjoyed it!
Sir, can you please teach us for begineer woodworking with hand tools.
Beautiful box admirable skills with hand tools and there wasn’t a table saw took me back fifty years when my Dad used make his varnish .
Awesome! I'm glad you liked it and it helped you remember time spent with your dad!
Great video!

Thank you for this video. Excellent job. This way to work gives you a feeling for the wood which you must have, even if you work with machines.
I love this way you show it on RUclips. No stress.
