- International football from September 1973 as Austria travel to Wembley to take on England.. England line up - .. Attendance - 48000.. England line up - Shilton / McFarland / Hunter / Hughes / Madeley / Bell / Currie / Peters / Clarke / Chivers / Channon
As a boy of 4 when this was played I never knew much about soccer then
I only ever read about these games in books and magazines in subsequent years so it's fascinating to see this footage all these years later (aged 52 in 2021 - both may 1969)
Brilliant. My dad took me to this when I was 9 - we left with 10 mins to go. We heard the cheer for 7-0 as we got to the car...😆
This was the friendly international arranged by the England FA just before England faced Poland in the all important crucial World Cup qualifier at Wembley on 17 October 1973.
It was Austria who had shocked England 3-2 at Wembley the last both teams met in a friendly in 1965 just before the 1966 World Cup.
But this around,England had sent a strong message to Poland ahead of the Wembley clash with a crushing 7-0 win that must have alarmed the latter.
The England team minus skipper Bobby Moore who was relegated to the subsititute just he would a few weeks again at Wembley for the crucial World Cup qualifier dominated the proceedings throughout. This same XI was to face Poland in that World Cup cruncher that eventually ended in a 1-1 draw.
This was a great England side - well balanced, good individual players, lots of pace and great movement. What a pity they failed to qualify in 74!
@@duckjive1 Team was great but they failed against Poland. They lost in Poland and tied on Wembley. Poland had a great team those days. They won 6 games in 74 Germany (beating 4powerful teams: Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Yugoslavia) and only lost against Germany (Champion in 74).
Haaaaa Poland !!!!!
The home draw with Wales was a killer blow 😮
@@poundshopcicero3089 that Draw still means England needs to Beat the Poles .

Thanks for uploading these videos. I find watching old football very calming!
Good day. Watched your next nice video and say thank you so much. Like from country Azerbaijan
Not going down the "oh football was so much better back then" road, but I think we appreciated the game more, to see England play was a treat before the T.V glut came along, to see overseas stars like Krankl was so rare to us, he only existed in our Pannini sticker books, highlights were often shown on Sportsnight which if my ever faltering memory serves me right was on a Wednesday at about 9.30, way past our bedtime, but if England were on we got to stay up late to watch, then on Thursday the game was the talk of the playground among the boys (not them girl things, they became interesting a few years later), so this channel takes many of us back to our little boy (oh and girl) stage of life, when things were so much simpler and the biggest worry was would Joyce Henderson go to the Xmas party with me or should I skip it and go play footie in the park and pretend to be Krankl
Simon,
Thanks for comprehensive highlights of this friendly international. For once an easy night for England against an overwhelmed Austria for whom Starek seemed to be the most effective performer. England prompted well from the back by Hunter and Hughes and well served up front by Currie and Clarke.
Topping game. I'm 11 and my grandfather flew there from China to see the match as he was in the area.
Thank you🙏🙏. Upload eng vs holland and Portugal 1969.
Prefer the old wembley.
The month before that infamous game v Poland 😩
The line up was the same as it was in the Poland match. 4-3-3.
@@mohdazmi10 Yes I think this was the first time Ramsey dropped Bobby Moore (after his mistake in Poland).
@@That_Random_Bloke Yes... It was the first time.
The ITV theme of the time nicely edited in at the beginning,I thought.....
Just a few weeks before the ill fated 1-1 Draw with Poland. Sir Alf Famously quoted that we played better Against Poland than this Hammering of Austria...l Agree with him. 🏴🏴😎
thank you friend
You also realise the BBC only had one fixed camera position which has almost no zoom - just a couple of useful settings.
Poland proved by finishing 3rd In the 74 world cup that they were a much better team than people thought at the time. Plus the England teams of the 70s were very inconsistent.
@@jookingstudio5292 Poland lost in the semifinal against west Germany but they were unlucky, the match was really balanced
The right kit (maybe) but not quite the right test for playing Poland....oh dear. 🤔
43:20 Dreams... (Searching for an answer)...
All White
Imagine if they'd played like that versus Poland the same year...
Unlucky for you Poland wasn't Austria
Really makes you wonder how England missed out on the 74 World cup with the names they could put on the field ?
This was a misleading result against poor, uncommitted opponents. If England had qualified for the World Cup Ramsay would have stayed on as manager and wouldn't have changed the team and England might have suffered the same fate as Italy - going out in the first round. However they showed that summer under Joe Mercer with 7 & 8 new players that they could have put on a good show if they had qualified and might even have taken 3rd place.
Remember the defeat that stopped us qualifying, some great players too. (Poland)
