Denis Law talking about Bremners level of commitment. So Bremner is on one side and Law on the other and they always made sure it was a draw, so none of the kids would be disappointed. Near the end, somebody punted the ball upfield and this little boy about eight years old runs after it and is heading for goal, Bremner runs after him and chops the legs from under him. The little kid does two somersaults, lands on his back and is winded. While the teachers are trying to revive him, Law grabs Bremner and asks him why the hell he done that. I've watched 14 minutes of the game and it sickens me to look at the way the game is played now! The players now day's wouldn't last a minute on the pitch
This was the period when Alf Ramsey seemed to opt for bringing in the hard men to compensate for England's declining performances. They'd just been outplayed by West Germany at Wembley so now both Storey and Hunter were in the team to dish out the rough stuff, with others like Ball and McFarland happy to join in when necessary.
I noticed a player was injured off the pitch and the commentator said "the game must go on". That's so unlike these days when the game stops if a player has a broken fingernail.

@johnferguson40 Thanks .. just a typing error in my excitement !! Billy Bremner was my favorite player those days, but the Scottish FA shot themselves in the foot by banning him in 1975 for some bar fight !! It's just an excuse to end his international career. It's just insane!!
Great vid, thanks for posting, as a 14 year old then the Home Internationals were the best part of the season. Such great names sadly departed as other posters have mentioned. Thanks again.
Wow! Brilliant! That first 25 minutes..brutal but so skilfull and compelling. 134,000 people at Hampden! What players both sides had and the midfield battles with Hartford, Gemmell and Bremner on Bell, Hunter and Storey and especially on Bally. Thank you for putting this up especially without the score which made it even more exciting👍
Alan Ball never gets the credit he deserves …..a true great and a player that Grahame Souness admitted he never got anywhere near when he played against him and make no mistake Souness was a great player too ….
As you say, so many great players on that pitch, on both sides. Bobby Moore's reading of the game shone throughout. Roy Mcfarland was outstanding alongside him too. Asa Hartford showed great technique as well. Had to laugh at Alan Ball and Denis Law walking off like best pals at the end. Warriors throughout the match !!
This was England on the verge of being pretty lousy for almost ten years, during which they failed to qualify for two consecutive World Cups ('74 and '78). The Scotland team are full of big, very famous names but I don't remember the no. 2 , John Brownlie, at all. Had to look him up. Played for Hibs and then Newcastle apparently, and only made 7 international appearances.
Brilliant right back. Broke his leg in a league match against East Fife in 73 I think. That hampered his career.. An attacking full back. Powerful and quick. A great player in a great Hibernian side.
John Brownlie was a hero of mine who was way ahead of his time as an attacking wing back. He would have been a household name but for a serious broken leg.
England may of been lousy for ten years and failed to qualify for 74 and 78 world cups but still had big names in their team with some very good if not great players throughout 70s.
Oh my God, Dennis Law! Kids these days have no idea what a footballer he was. he had everything, including always playing with a smile on his face (except after one goal back in 1974) Bobby Moore - a man's man, would only take the knee before his queen, Alan Ball - why did Everton ever let him go? Billy Bremner... Lou Macari. There was Colin Bell, the mighty Colin Bell! Todays footballers pale to these giants.
Of course, in the 70s the fans who remembered the 40s and 50s were saying exactly the same thing and thought the likes of Moore and Bell were just effeminate fanny merchants with their long hair and "male jewellery". Plus, remember that it was these same players who then failed to get England to two successive World Cups in the 70s.
Proper football when men were men .Some good performances but how impressive was Mcfarland. I saw him play every week for Derby but he just stood out in this game. Thanks for finding this.
This game took place a few days after Rangers won the Cup Winners Cup in Barcelona. I remember seeing some Rangers fans still wearing sombreros, having just got back from Spain
Scotland had some good teams in the 70s and 80s. You do have to wonder whether the founding of the Premier League harmed the Scottish national team? Scots were preeminent in big English clubs back then.
The Prem League started, and still do, important many mediocre overseas players where in the 'old days' they were picking up young Scots, Irish, English and Welsh lads. Must make a difference
A great match, real venom! 130,000 Scots screaming for English blood. Donachie and Gemmill were superb and Hunter too although his tackles were absolutely brutal.
His nickname was 'Crazy horse', such a great player... just a pity he played for Liverpool when he could have been down the road at Old Trafford if he'd played his cards right. 😁
Was born that August, but most of these were still playing or managing when I became aware, and then mad about football - only ones missing seem to be Roy Race and Blackie Gray
This game is the greatest example of how football should be played. After 2000, the game got very crappy (mostly because of player’s managers, bosman case, and the lots of money that were involved).
Proper football played by proper footballers , in a proper way , what the hell has happened to the game ? I bet those players would have played for nothing
How brilliant was Norman Hunter in this match ? I was only aware of his reputation as a 'clogging' centre half till I saw this. Yet here he displayed huge talent. Excellent passing, great anticipation and awareness off the ball, unbelievable work rate, good technique. What an eye-opener. Glad I saw this. Excellent example of how football was played 'when I was a lad'....lol
circa 1972 when music was about David Cassidy,Middle of the Road,Young Michael Jackson and his brothers,Dawn,Wings. And when it was football-wise,the old First and 2nd Divisions.
Interesting to hear Jimmy Hill adding commentary with Brian Moore. Hill was with the BBC (Match of the Day) Moore was with ITV (The Big Match & On the Ball)
One National Anthem played.......THE National Anthem of both England and Scotland. No "Flower of Scotland", no whistles or boos or disrespect, just men playing proper football simply for the pride of representing their country. The Home Internationals and the FA Cup Final were the only games shown live on TV, so you made certain to watch them every season.
Probably because a lot of Rangers supporters made up the Scottish support back then even some Celtic went back then. Now it's Rangers fans mainly preferring England and Celtic wanting the republic of Ireland to do well.Scottish fans now are mainly everybody that doesn't support Rangers and Celtic ,I think that's why the Scots were so violent back then as it had so many Rangers and some Celtic fans following Scotland. I came down to Wembley a few times as a kid with my auld man and it was mental hardly any England fans went to hampden or the Wembley game in the 70s ,by the time the 80s came thatcher banned the Scots then the English casuals came for revenge 😅.
Note Alan Ball & Denis Law went off the field after the game after a hug and arm around each others shoulders. Best of pals really, as many of them of course were playing in the same league and often teams the rest of the year.
These guys were not constantly diving, complaining or needing a rest after running for 20 seconds, used a much heavier ball and they earned £70/week. What a bunch of dopes! :)
134,000! Take that Wembley & your paltry 100,000. That must have been one of the highest gates in the world. Probably beaten by Brazil I think, maybe 150,000?
What's really amazing is that the crowd aren't even packed in. When they designed Hampden it was to hold around 150,000. The fact that they knocked down a 100,000 Wembley and replaced it with a 90,000 stadium is ridiculous.
@@DavidUKesb it's just under 52,000 now. Needs knocking down now I'd say. Amazingly the club Queens Park played there & back in the early days on 1930 they played Rangers with 96,000! & they played there until recently with gates of a few 100. They have left now.
Noted.. But With the turnstile entry attendants Collecting fivers add on another 10.000 or more for Wembley cup finals early 80s etc... I should add Aledgley...
Tackling was brutal, almost GBH. No wounder once you got the ball you got rid of it to avoid a broken limb. And once the players career was over, for most, no money and lucky to be a pub landlord. All so different now.
Ahhh a time when men played football with a real football not like today as they play football with a beach Ball just in case they hurt their little toes.

Enthralling
134,000 are you kidding me. ?
@@gingerbaker4390 The stadia weren't all seaters in those days so the capacity was much larger and this was always a very popular fixture.
@@gingerbaker4390 according to Brian Moore during the commentary certainly looks it...
@@jerseypeter6644 It's just amazing.
Alan Ball never gets the credit he deserves …..a true great and a player that Grahame Souness admitted he never got anywhere near when he played against him and make no mistake Souness was a great player too ….
Gosh there was some quality players on that pitch. Bobby Moore,, Dennis Law, Colin Bell, Billy Bremner, etc...
@@scottfraser2623 Was Just going to say thought he had a very good game. Cool under pressure
Colin Bell , Alan Ball , Bobby Moore all wonderful footballers.
@@alistairnewton8898 Denis Law, Billy Bremner, Lou Macari etc.
Why the racism?
@@ethanblackhurst8593 Racism ? Where ?
Great days loved it when i was a kid the crowds all standing packed to the rafters you could hardly breathe let alone see 134000 unreal.
Great to see Colin Bell in his rightful 8 shirt. He was my first football hero. A great talent cut short.
Proper football when men were men .Some good performances but how impressive was Mcfarland. I saw him play every week for Derby but he just stood out in this game. Thanks for finding this.
So did I! Absolute legend who still graces Pride Park regularly?
Wow what an upload this is great stuff m8
There was something very special about that era, funny how they used to warm up!
This game took place a few days after Rangers won the Cup Winners Cup in Barcelona. I remember seeing some Rangers fans still wearing sombreros, having just got back from Spain
L
Saw this match as a 12-year old kid in 1972. Malaya then did not have coloured TV and we watched the International Weekend on Sundays.
Good day. Watched your next nice video and enjoyed. So next like and thanks from country Azerbaijan
Great upload. It was a man's game in them days. Lol
The immortal bobby moore !
Alan Ball... amazing player...giving the opposition the "fuck offs" as he returned to the centre circle after scoring...good lad
A great match, real venom! 130,000 Scots screaming for English blood. Donachie and Gemmill were superb and Hunter too although his tackles were absolutely brutal.
There were only 115 ,000 and no English? stop talking crap and engage your brain if you can fing it.
The good days are back used to watch them in 70 they were the days and Wales
Alan Ball, my hero , what a footballer, small in stature but Colossus in heart and ability.
Loved the way he gave em some verbal after he scored when they were kicking off after the goal
the greats games,... miss atmosphere 72... from Indonesia thanks this video.
@@duckjive1 okay thanks brother
Alan ball said something to law after he scored , nice one Alan
Emlyn Hughes...one of my all time favourite players...such infectious enthusiasm and could play in so many positions
His nickname was 'Crazy horse', such a great player... just a pity he played for Liverpool when he could have been down the road at Old Trafford if he'd played his cards right. 😁
This is so much better than the Premier League in 2021.
Fightball.
To be fair it was uefa and fifa that cleaned up the game
wow what a goodgame special selection i love angland and scotland thank you
Was born that August, but most of these were still playing or managing when I became aware, and then mad about football - only ones missing seem to be Roy Race and Blackie Gray
This game is the greatest example of how football should be played. After 2000, the game got very crappy (mostly because of player’s managers, bosman case, and the lots of money that were involved).
Many great players, some real Legends.....Thanks for this fantastic video: love watch games England vs Scotland , the true football for me.
Sad to think how many of these terrific footballers have left us now.
For those of you watching on black-and-white sets, England are in the light shirts and Scotland are wearing the dark shirts.
"He went for the ball as much as the man.". Whatever happened to that sentence! Brilliant to see this. Thanks for the upload!
Back in the day when the Scots and the English loved each other....happy times.
Proper football played by proper footballers , in a proper way , what the hell has happened to the game ?
I bet those players would have played for nothing
Money and everything done for them. imagine Neymar or CR7 playing in those day. They won't want to play.
Pity he couldn't replicate it 18 months later in THAT game against Poland
I think Emlyn Hughes is one of the most underrated players in England football history. An incredible work force on the field. I rate him in top ten.
watched premiere for so long i forget how the game used to be played no prisoners no prisoners great game
Never saw this one England played great ! Hunter very incisive in midfield
There’s a fan on the field. He s thrown a bunch of flowers at Norman Hunter lol
circa 1972 when music was about David Cassidy,Middle of the Road,Young Michael Jackson and his brothers,Dawn,Wings. And when it was football-wise,the old First and 2nd Divisions.
Music was better than that list.
Interesting to hear Jimmy Hill adding commentary with Brian Moore. Hill was with the BBC (Match of the Day) Moore was with ITV (The Big Match & On the Ball)
"for those of you watching in black and white the referee is wearing a bright scarlet jersey" (or something like that 😁) Brian Moore
A classic!
Hampden looks a bit different these days! Another brilliant post-love it!
Superb clean tackle by Moore on Bremner. A foul apparently 🤣
This is the football I fell in love with, sadly long gone and what we have now pales in comparison.
@1:38:25 Great to see Denis Law walk off the pitch with his arm around Alan Ball. It's only a game of sport - after the match friendships resume.
Came here for the “in my day…” posts, and I wasn’t disappointed 😂
18:47 wow cleanest tackle ever
@@DavidUKesb I can assure you we were packed in. I was there. Look at the far terracing when Banks takes a goal kick. It's packed
And once the players career was over, for most, no money and lucky to be a
pub landlord. All so different now.
The eye-watering talent on that turf! How much would they cost in today’s insane world?!
Alan Ball magic player
Graeme Souness wholeheartedly agrees with you.
Ahhh a time when men played football with a real football not like today as they play football with a beach Ball just in case they hurt their little toes.
Real footballs that gave platers dementia in later life
you know whos missing in this game Neymar i have a feeling he would be crying...
What a good match!..
These players yes, they played with all their hearts..
But not with their heads.
Superb😀 love the old football days👍
that is great - great atmosphere and shuddering tackles
I was at the match in the Rangers end. Those fans were just back from the battle in Barcelona. As England fans we cheered the goal and it was like shouting in church.
Gordon Banks looking commanding in everything he did - looking every bit one of the Greats in goalkeeping.
Best scotland team ever. Excellent players, great team. They really played the great team of England. Most of these morden players and coaches need to watch this game.
When I saw the team sheet for the Scotland line-up my jaw dropped - and I'm an old English fart.
